[Bug 235445] Re: thunderbird account wizard unable to make imap gmail account

2008-11-29 Thread Lars Noodén
No additional info because the problem is still as it was back in May.

Tools -> Account Settings -> Add Account -> Gmail -> Identity

The wizard then automatically and unavoidably selects Incoming Server
Name to be pop.gmail.com and incoming server type as POP3.

It should allow the choice of IMAP, or better default to IMAP, and point
to imap.gmail.com on port 993.

[Bug 321974] [NEW] qtparted cannot unmount partitions

2009-01-27 Thread Lars Noodén

In order to make new partitions, qtparted should allow the necessary
functions for the disk to be partitioned or re-partitioned. When a

programs can be used to unmount the drive, but the target audience of

[Bug 286312] [NEW] apt-cacher refuses to pass kickstart configuration files

2008-10-20 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

If an installation CD sets the HTTP_PROXY environment variable, then all
HTTP requests, including those for a kickstart file go through the
proxy. In the case of Ubuntu and other Debian-based distros, the
fastest proxy for APT packages is apt-cacher.

For example,

LABEL net
menu label ^Install Kubuntu via network
  kernel /install/vmlinuz
  append ks=http://192.168.101.101/ks.cfg file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed
initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet -- http_proxy=http://192.168.101.101:3142/

However, when the installer tries to get the kickstart file (ks.cfg) an error
occurs:

"Proxy request sent, awaiting response... 403 Sorry, not allowed to fetch
that type of file: ks.cfg
12:46:52 ERROR 403: Sorry, not allowed to fetch that type of file:
ks.cfg."

A work-around is to serve the ks.cfg via FTP, but that's an annoyance to
set up a second service.

[Bug 149303] Re: pidgin gabber gossip kopete konversation have divergent descriptions in KDE's k-menu

2008-11-09 Thread Lars Noodén
I cannot try with the "latest" ubuntu release for at least a few weeks.
I will possibly be able to try sooner on the latest "gutsy" which is the
most recent *working* version of ubuntu.

Here is where the time allocated for that went during this last window of
opportunity:
8.10 f*ked the harddrive (boot records) of a test machine consistently and it
took a few days to find a way to safely move my work machine to 8.10. It's a
multi-boot (OS X, Kubuntu, OpenBSD, Debian) that takes several hours to
restore, mostly due to OS X. Additionally, exploring several bugs with 8.10
(thunderbird on 8.10 can't read existing profiles, KDE 4.1 is slow and useless)
prevent using it on a daily basis or even for more than a demo. Since the bug
reporting upstream in Debian is dependent upon e-mail an I am depended upon
Tbird, this is a show-stopper for pursuing this bug.

How is this a duplicate of bug #192413 ? 192413 is about a problem

single monitor. Classing this as a duplicate is likely wrong.

[Bug 237391] [NEW] ssh-keygen should default to dsa not rsa

2008-06-04 Thread Lars Noodén

[Bug 237391] New connections not made that often

2008-06-04 Thread Lars Noodén
@Neal: That's a valid critique of debian's SSL implementation not
related to DSA vs RSA.

DSA is faster for signing and RSA is faster for verification.
  http://neubia.com/archives/000191.html
  ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc2536.txt
  http://home.pacbell.net/tpanero/crypto/dsa.html

RSA is weaker than a DSA key of the same length, so to get the same
effect, one must use a longer key. I'm not sure that the neubia link
above takes that into account. So if the default stays as RSA, it might
be an idea to increase the default RSA key length.

These are signature algorithms anyway and only used at the beginning
anyway. After the client and server authenticate, the rest is done with
ciphers like Blowfish or IDEA. So for SSH it's not a problem to use DSA
at all, new connections are not made that often.

I already have a work-around, that's not the issue. It's easy to use

The problem described in the bug report is that the Account Creation

missing the ability to create an IMAP account.

Hmm. I still see it as a bug, but am willing to call it something else

I would like (and expect) that mailboxes/folders on the remote IMAP

in that I can create IMAP forlders using other clients and then none of
these folders show up in Thunderbird...

[Bug 279772] Re: Documentation missing from Qt4 assistant

an error.

[Bug 242950] description

2008-06-25 Thread Lars Noodén
That's the output from OpenOffice on the latest updates of hardy heron.
It gets as far as the splash screen and then quits.

 Linux 2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP Wed May 28 19:28:38 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[Bug 242950] Re: openoffice does not complete startup

2008-06-25 Thread Lars Noodén
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 185311 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/185311

#1 & #3 : openoffice.org never gets past the splash screen. This occurs
when running it from the Kmenu, or from the shell. That, I guess, would
be when making a new file.

#3 Even when running it with an explicit filename from the shell (e.g.
soffice foo.ods) the same thing happens.

#2: How would I go about identifying the version of the JRE?
from dpkg -s openoffice.org-java-common, I get version 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1

[Bug 231548] [NEW] hfs+ missing from installation partition options

2008-05-18 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

Using the installation disk kubuntu-kde4-8.04-alternate-amd64.iso, there
is no option to use existing HFS+ partitions.

Boot -> install kde4 kubuntu ->

As there is a rapidly increasing number of mac users and a good number
of these also want to boot (k|x|flux)ubuntu adding HFS+ support would go
a long way to promoting interoperability.

[Bug 232519] [NEW] KDE4 -> system settings -> display drops resolution to 1024x768

2008-05-21 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde4

Even looking at the display settings drops the screen resolution down to
1024x768. It was 1440x900 but there seems to be no way to get it back.
The 'apply' button remains greyed out even after choosing the correct
resolution.

This is on KDE4, Kubuntu installed from kubuntu-kde4-8.04-alternate-
amd64.iso plus updates as of today.

[Bug 191353] /usr/share/doc/openafs-client/README.modules

2008-05-22 Thread Lars Noodén
Ok. The short answer is that I must build a new kernel in order to use
the AFS client. The package openafs-client should then say as much.

The readme implies that there are binaries. That would be great:

"The easiest The easiest way to get AFS modules is to install prebuilt
modules. For
example, if you are running kernel 2.4.27-2-686-smp, you might try:
   apt-get install openafs-modules-2.4.27-2-686-smp"

However, apt-cache shows only the source package so again it is actually
necessary to build custom kernel:

   # apt-cache search openafs-modules
openafs-modules-source - AFS distributed filesystem kernel module source

So for the short-term work-around: build a new kernel.

Yes, I see a window popping up after those messages. A warning dialog
pops up with the message:

"Invalid url: 'firefox' given, exiting"

If I give 'apturl' a real URL / package, then it responds well with
other dialogs:

e.g.
apturl apt://tidy

"Package 'tidy' is already installed"

e.g.
apturl apt://bind9

"Install package

Do you want to install the package 'bind9'?

No Yes"

[Bug 234379] Same goes for Dolphin 1.0.2

2008-05-23 Thread Lars Noodén
The above was for Dolphin 0.9.2 using KDE 3.5.9

However the same need is for Dolphin 1.0.2 using KDE 4.0.3

[Bug 234379] [NEW] need way to format or create new filesystem

2008-05-23 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

Dolphin needs to have an option to format media / create file systems.
e.g. I have an NTFS or VFAT flashdrive that I want to become Ext2.

Dolphin brings up icons of attached media. 'right-clicking' brings up a
menu which should include an option to 'format'. Or it could go
elsewhere.

[Bug 234372] [NEW] new KDE menu requires too complicated maneuvers and timing

2008-05-23 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde4

The new KDE4 menu requires the both the pointer and the user's attention
to zig and zag, rather than follow an arc or trajectory like the old
menu. Perhaps most difficult are the delays and apparent variable
timing. These combine to make it not possible to use the menu without
undivided attention. The old menu was predictable enough that it can be
used while looking elsewhere on the screen or partially looking away.

If a 'new' look is of overriding importance, it should still take into
account time/motion/mentalaction needed for each item.

Attached is a view of the KDE 3.5 menu with a red line approximating the
flow of movement. Backing up a menu level is as simple as reversing the
direction of the mouse.

With the proposed KDE4 menu, one must hover and click to move forward.
Then, unfortunately, to move back on the propose KDE4, the action is not
as simple as moving back the way mouse came, but maneuvering to the edge
of the panel (a difficult target) and then clicking.

It looks good, it just needs simplified workflow.

[Bug 232458] double yellow widgets swirl

2008-05-23 Thread Lars Noodén
I notice that both the real upper right corner and the false upper right
corner have *working* 'add widget' icons (the yellow swirl)

It also seems that the lower resolution desktop, with the taskbar at the
bottom of it, is super imposed on a properly scaled one. This seems
confirmed: when I set Configure Panel - Plasma Workspace -> Location ->
Right, the panel is placed on the false right edge.

Sorry for the large attachment, but I figure a full screen shot is
needed.

Running fsck.hfsplus gives a segmentation fault. This is running it

[Bug 234749] mkfs.hfsplus is in hardy

2008-05-25 Thread Lars Noodén
Sorry. I was thinking 'mkfs.hfsplus' but wrote instead 'newfs_hfs'.
mkfs.hfsplus is definitely part of Ubuntu, at least as of Hardy:

 $ dpkg -S mkfs.hfsplus
 hfsprogs: /usr/share/man/man8/mkfs.hfsplus.8.gz
 hfsprogs: /sbin/mkfs.hfsplus

 $ lsb_release -rc
 Release:8.04
 Codename: hardy

pdisk is mentioned in the manpage for mkfs.hfsplus:

   "SEE ALSO
mount(8), pdisk(8)"

You're right about pdisk not being in debian, though:

http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=pdisk&mode=exactfilename&suite=unstable&arch=any

So the solution is to either remove the mention of pdisk, to add it to
ubuntu, or to point to where it can be downloaded.

is not common any more. A new version should have the option for HTTP-

[Bug 235445] Gmails IMAP instructions

Gmail has instructions, which bypass the Gmail option in the wizard, but
those that choose Gmail in the wizard choose POP. This is insecure
*and* means data is downloaded to the client and erased from the server.
Beginners can lose serious data that way.
