I had a similar problem, but in gvim.

[Bug 585986] [NEW] radeon/ati display response unacceptably slow after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4

2010-05-26 Thread Larry Siden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Response of my display (radeon/ati) display has become unacceptably slow
after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4. Basic operations such as scrolling a
window, repositioning a window, selecting an input field in a browser

[Bug 772177] Re: Alt+Tab "Feels" slow

2011-07-26 Thread Larry Siden
I finally found a solution for this here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Metacity

You run "gconftool /apps/metacity". When the window opens, go to
General and turn off "compositing_manager". That's it!

You won't get the nice drop-shadows around your window borders nor the
nice thumbnails, but that's what was making alt-tab so slow on my old

2011-05-06 Thread Larry Siden
Looking at http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-
edgers/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources, it would seem that
the package in question is xserver-xorg. Removing that will also remove
ubuntu-desktop. So I need to remove those, then re-install them
_without_ the PPA xorg-edgers enabled? That will allow me to upgrade to
Natty? Of course, will have to do all that from console.

yes, x-swat was active. I was trying to get my nvidia to work again. I
don't think x-swat is active anymore. I was able to resolve it by
downloading and installing the proprietary nVidea driver.

Is there no way to tell from the log files what package is conflicting with
the upgrade? It might be one of the Google packages. For a while, I had
the daily build of Chrome enabled, but if that's not it I'd hope there
should be a way to get to it through the log files.

[Bug 773473] [NEW] "cannot calculate upgrade" when attempting to upgrade to Natty 11.04

2011-04-29 Thread Larry Siden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

It prints this message in a pop-up window or in the console (depending
on whether I run the upgrade manager) and will not complete the upgrade.

I wish I knew what log files I can consult for more information in order
to figure out what packages are causing the problem.

I tried disabling all 3rd party software sources. Based on a post I
read, I even tried running the update manager from the console after
uninstalling ubuntu-desktop, but ran into the same problem, so I re-
installed ubuntu-desktop.

I've attached sources.list

I tried to remove the package with "ppa-purge ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa" but it
complained "Warning: Could not find package list for PPA:..."

After some googling on the Ubuntu forums, I just blew away everything in

I think you meant "xserver-xorg" :)

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg
xserver-xorg:

I finally got it to upgrade but I had to use aptitude to remove a lot of
stuff first including ubuntu-desktop

[Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2011-04-10 Thread Larry Siden
This problem is affecting me too. I have tried:

* installing the PPA ubuntu-x-swat-x-updates-maverick (results in Hash Sum
Mismatch when trying to install nvidia driver)
* following suggestions from #36 to downgrade back to Lucid.
* installing driver from maverick-proposed (apt-get install
nvidia-current/maverick-proposed => E: Unable to locate package
nvidia-graphics-drivers-96)
* installing proprietary driver directly from Nvidia site.

I've been at it all afternoon reading this and other threads and trying
suggestions and nothing has worked. Does anybody have a fix for this?

A side-question. How do I know which driver I need for my chipset.
lspci says I have NVidia NV44A [GeForce 6200]. Does that need the 96 or
170 driver or something else? I don't even know what those numbers
mean. I assume that they must correspond to chipsets. I've been to the
nvidia site but don't know what to look for.

I wish there was a clear set of instructions somewhere. Alternately,
someone please tell me what kind of card I need to upgrade to for which
there are good drivers in Maverick. I'd gladly pay a few extra bucks to
have a working system again because I depend on it for my work. What a
mess this has been for me and for others!

[Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2011-04-10 Thread Larry Siden
BTW - I tried running jockey-text (I have only a simple tty console
right now) with -u, -c, -l, and it prints only "GtkWarning: could not
open display" which doesn't make sense since jockey-text is supposed to
be for non-graphics terminals. I know this is probably a separate
issue, but I just thought I'd mention it.

[Bug 756936] [NEW] jockey-text prints "... could not open display"

2011-04-10 Thread Larry Siden
Public bug reported:

jockey-text prints
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/gtk2.0/gtk/__init__.py:57: GtkWarning:
could not open display

I think that's odd since jockey-text is for non-graphics consoles. What
display is it trying to open?

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)
jockey-common 0.5.10-0ubuntu

** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-96 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2011-04-11 Thread Larry Siden
Thanks. I finally got the proprietary driver from Nvidia to install and
it's working so I'll leave well enough alone and hope that they fix the
problem in the next Ubuntu release (11.4) so I can go back to the distro
package.
