[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Hey all, In addition to the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel, I'm pleased to report that my Dell Latitude D620 HAS NOT CRASHED with the 3.3.7-030307-generic kernel. It had been running for almost six hours straight with not a single crash yesterday. The 3.4.0-030400-generic kernel did, though, after only a day. I have not tried the 3.2.0-27-generic yet, and I have been tempted to do it. I just might install it in addition to the other kernels (I kept the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency as a backup just in case the 3.3.7 kernel didn't work out). For instructions on installing new kernels, go to #328 where I give detailed instructions on how to do it. So, to recap my experiences with the various kernels: 3.2.0-23-generic and generic-pae: crashes horribly 3.2.0-23-lowlatency and lowlatency-pae: no crashes. Tends to hog resources a bit, though. 3.2.0-24-generic: honestly, hadn't tried it yet, but am not exactly holding my breath 3.2.0-25-generic and generic-pae: crashes horribly 3.2.0-26, 3.2.0-27, or 3.2.0-29: hadn't tried any of them yet. I'm tempted to try them, though. 3.3.7-.030307-generic: works quite nicely so far. If it doesn't, I'll post it right here. 3.4.0-030400-generic: crashes horribly -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
It's pretty much been a week and I'm pleased to inform you guys that staying on Linux kernel 3.2.0-23 won't freeze the computer. Just make sure you're not using the 'pae' kernel because that seems to be part of the problem, unless you really, really need it. It doesn't need to be the lowlatency kernel, obviously. This works with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu. One time I mistakenly kept the 'pae' and it froze my system, so this is why I will be stressing to NOT USE THE 'PAE'. In order to do this, you need to go onto Synaptic Package Manager and completely remove any and all occurrences of the 3.2.0-25 kernel and install the 3.2.0-23 kernel, image and header. Again, NOT THE 'PAE'!! All you'd need to do is have Synaptic look for "3.2.0-25" and then "3.2.0-23" and you should be golden. Then, when you reboot, go into GRUB and make sure the kernel is correct. You may need to go into the "Previous Linux Versions" in order to find the older kernel. If this is the case, then a step was missed. I will say that I've had a lot more reliability with the low latency kernel, and will give a more detailed report about the older generic kernel. It did freeze once, but I was doing a SMART test on my hard drive at the time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
UPDATE: The generic kernel is a bust. It froze again when testing the hard drive with the Disk Utility, and this morning it froze while I was reading a fanfiction via Firefox - nothing more. At any rate, the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel has been very reliable and hasn't frozen on me once. So all of you Ubunters looking for a cure for what ails you and your freeze-happy compy, I've had absolutely wonderful results from the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel. Disregard what I said about the generic kernel. If you want to know why I think this is, I have no idea. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Michael: To clarify, it is the 3.2.0-23-lowlatency kernel that doesn't crash. The generic kernel does. The exact procedure is to go into Synaptic Package Manager (install it if you don't have it), search for all instances of 3.2.0-25 and have it removed. The next thing to do is to search for the 3.2.0-23 lowlatency kernel, taking care to avoid the PAE kernel unless you're running a 64 bit system., and install: linux-headers-3.2.0-23 linux-headers-3.2.0-23-lowlatency linux-image-3.2.0-23-lowlatency You will definitely need to restart after that. After you restart, check the 'System' tab on your System Monitor. If everything went well, it should say this: "Kernel Linux 3.2.0-23-lowlatency". It is absolutely imperative that I stress that it is ONLY THE LOW LATENCY KERNEL that hasn't crashed on me. So take care to only install the low latency kernel and not the generic kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. Hessian: It's my pleasure, friend. It was quite accidental, since I was planning on having this be a portable studio and the only distro/remix which JACK will work with is KXStudio, and only the current version has a low latency and a realtime kernel. [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
I'm glad my solution helped you, Hessian. Basically, if you have to access GRUB to get the older kernel, then the only step you missed was removing the 3.2.0-25 kernel, as well as the 3.2.0-23-generic. No biggie. You're absolutely right, though; a few extra keystrokes is a small sacrifice to have a fully-working computer.
I've also stumbled upon another possible cure due to the fact that I REALLY wanted to use KXStudio again (is the only distro that JACK will run on my laptop!!!) and the only version that has a low-latency kernel is the current one. The kernel that's used in this is actually slightly older, namely 3.2.0-23. Again, I'm using the low-latency kernel, so I don't know if this makes any difference. However, the fact is I've been using KXStudio 12.04 (KDE GUI) all night and have not had one single hard freeze. I tried newer kernels and didn't get any love from them. Again, I'm using a Dell Latitude D620 with an Intel Core 2 processor, integrated graphics (3D capable, but kinda lower rung... can't even play Fallout 3 :( ), Sigmatel 9200 soundcard, 3 GB RAM. @Michael (starkpc) #270: I tried that using Linux Mint 13 (based off Ubuntu) and it still froze three times in one day. I followed the tutorial in quidsup's video on YouTube after goofing up PCLinuxOS. After the last time LM13 froze, I decided, for compatibility's sake, to try LMDE instead of going back to PCLinuxOS. I should also re-mention that this is also happening to non-Sandy Bridge users, which I am one. I'm really, really unimpressed by how Canonical's bug-fix squad is not handling this. [Bug 159031] Re: computer freezes when sshfs blocks waiting for connection
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sshfs-fuse/+bug/159031 Hi all, I've been having this problem for quite some time. Whenever I accidentally touch an sshfs mounted directory which is unavailable, I have to run "killall sshfs" to get things working again. This often happens when I mount a directory on my home network and touch that directory while at work. Right now my workaround is to use the "ServerAliveInterval" option without the "reconnect" option. This means that when the ssh connection is lost, sshfs exits (and unmounts the locally mounted directory). I then need to run sshfs again when I want to use the mount again (I could also use autofs, I assume). In my opinion the main problem is that sshfs leaves the local directory in an invalid state while it is "trying to reconnect". No matter what happenes, it seems clear that at any given time the mounted directory should either be mounted or unmounted -- meaning available or unavailable. If the underlying ssh connection has been lost, it makes no sense to keep the directory mounted (and locking up system calls). It's like if you pull a usb disk out of your computer. The media is unavailable. It should be unmounted, no matter what. This is more or less the behaviour I get without the reconnect option. I would suggest that the reconnect option should simply act as an "outer loop" around a non-reconnecting version of sshfs. The non-reconnecting version should close the ssh connection and unmount the local directory on disconnect. The reconnect loop should then both connect and mount when a connection to the remote host is available again. Obviously it is also a problem that many applications don't properly handle IO errors, and some even have IO operations in their main loops. But sshfs, fuse, and ssh can't do much to fix this.
