[Bug 228264] [NEW] update dapper to hardy fails cos archives not found

2008-05-08 Thread Kai-Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I tried to update from 7.10 to the new distribution (hardy beta) but got
the following error message:

Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-security/Release
Unable to find expected entry web/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file
(malformed Release file?)
Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release Unable

Release file?)
Failed to fetch http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-updates/Release

Failed to fetch
http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-backports/Release Unable to
find expected entry web/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed

Maybe this is due to the fact that I originally downloaded kubuntu in GB
(the German version though) and am now in Germany, but it didn't work
from GB either.

[Bug 574542] [NEW] upgrade to kubuntu 10.04 did not work

2010-05-03 Thread Kai-Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Upon trying to upgrade to Kubuntu 10.04, I get the message that "updates
could not be installed" and system upgrade was canceled and the original
system is restored (dpkg --configure -a)

As proposed, I include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/

btw: The message also states that sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an
error code (1).

Apparantly, the message I got when I tried to upgrade exaggerated a bit.
Everything seems to work, except the one broken package (miktex-tools) that was
broken before...

[Bug 469470] [NEW] proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

2009-11-01 Thread Kai-Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-185

Under Kubuntu 9.04 I installed the proprietary nvidia driver 185 for my nVidia
Quadro NVS 140M.
This finally made Suspend to RAM work, which before only left me with a black
screen upon trying to resume. Also fancy desktop effects worked then.
After upgrading to Karmic however everytime I try to install the nvidia driver
upon booting I get the error message:

Ubuntu is runnign in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

After manually changing
Section "Device"
[...]
Driver "nvidia"

to
Driver "nv"

graphics work again, but no Suspend to RAM and no 3D effects...

just to let everyone know: installing karmic from scratch worked for me,
I was now able to install the nvidia185 driver without problems. This is
not a fix of course...

[Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

2009-11-07 Thread Kai-Simon
Here comes the Xorg.0.log (i.e. /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after trying to start
with nvidia installed).
There were several other log files starting with Xorg, namely
Xorg.0.log
Xorg.1.log
Xorg.1.log.old
Xorg.99.log
Xorg.99.log.old
Xorg.failsafe.log
Xorg.failsafe.log.old
in case you need any of them let me know (sorry I have no clue what they're
there for)

[Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic

2009-11-07 Thread Kai-Simon
and here the only file I found in /var/log/gdm
Hope that helps.

You're writing that "if you're doing reinstalls of the driver it *should* do
that for you."
Sorry for my ignorance but what would be the easiest way to do that? So far I
try to install the driver via jockey-kde, where now after it had been
downloaded and installed the first time I can only choose to activate it if
it's not...
The names of all the packages I've installed that got "nvidia" in their name
are the following:
nvidia-173-modaliases
nvidia-96-modaliases
nvidia-180-kernel-source
nvidia-180-libvdpau
nvidia-glx-180
nvidia-180-modaliases
nvidia-common
nvidia-settings
Would it help to remove some of these (if so, which)?

Thanks for any help so far.

Kai-Simon

And another file:
I couldn't find a make.log in /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/build/, the
attached file is
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/2.6.31-14-generic/i686/log/make.log

Again I hope this is of any help.
Thanks in advance,
