[Bug 1069757] Re: Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2013-01-11 Thread Julian Clark
This bug recently made it to the LibreOffice 3.6 most annoying bugs
(mab) list: < https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6 >. This
bug is also reported to be currently unresolved in LibreOffice 4.0.0.

[Bug 863186] Re: [Oneiric] Kdenlive configuration vizard doesn't founding MLT SDK

2011-10-10 Thread Julian Clark
I read elsewhere (see: ) that the reason why the error comes up with the
Kdenlive configuration wizard is that the current version of MLT outputs
to stdout, and that the version of Kdenlive in question here looks for
MLT to output to stderr. The code for the wizard has been adjusted in
Kdenlive trunk (upcoming version 0.8.2) to account for the change in MLT
(instead of using a command-line tool, Kdenlive will tap directly into
the API of MLT). Basically, this will be fixed in 0.8.2 -- once one
other last lingering bug in that version gets resolved.

[Bug 1069757] Re: Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2012-10-25 Thread Julian Clark
I suspect that this is an overall issue with LibreOffice 3.6 in a GNOME-
based desktop environment (tested in Unity and GNOME Shell). I
experienced the same behavior indicated in the original bug report when
trying to save files to different forms of network storage from LO 3.6
-- in my case, Samba/SMB/CIFS and WebDAV. Opening files from network
storage works fine (though LO still handles files over WebDAV
independently from the OS). With the Windows shares, I could only save
the file if the file already existed. Consistent with the original bug
report, I could not save *new* files. With WebDAV, I could not save *at
all* -- even to an existent file.

I first noticed this behavior with an otherwise successful manual
backport of LO 3.6.2 from Quantal (12.10) to Precise (12.04). Thinking
that the problem might have been something being different in Precise, I
then tested for the problem in a fresh install of Quantal. After seeing
the problem in Quantal as well, I tested for it in another Linux
distribution (in that case, using LO 3.6.3). The behavior was the same
across the board. In all three cases, the desktop environment was GNOME-
based, with the network storage having been mounted via GVFS/GIO. I know
for sure that this problem did not exist in LibreOffice 3.5. In the
past, I have seen KDE handle network storage better than GNOME --
especially with OpenOffice and LibreOffice. I will soon test all of this
in KDE as well, to ensure that more bases have been covered.

I would consider this bug with network storage to be a significant
regression, and a high priority for anyone using LO in the enterprise
(where the use of network storage is common). I hope that the importance
of this bug will be considered to be high.

[Bug 1069757] Re: Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2012-10-25 Thread Julian Clark
The related upstream bug report:
. I would not
consider the recommended workaround to be a solution, though I have used
said workaround in the past with other applications that are not GVFS-
aware. LibreOffice *is* GVFS/GIO-aware, but said functionality appears
to be currently broken.

[Bug 955376] Re: Text color under Ambiance in top panel of GNOME Classic is dark gray instead of white

2012-06-04 Thread Julian Clark
Now that this bug has been fixed for Quantal, what will we need to do in
order to get the same package into precise-proposed? The bug affects me
(and, likely, others) specifically in Precise, but I have already
indicated that the bug affects me.

I, too, can confirm that the new package resolves the issue described in

[Bug 941673] Re: performance of accounts-daemon is very poor

2012-06-11 Thread Julian Clark
My setup is Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome + Compiz in use instead of Unity.

I am not quite confident with the suggested workaround. The package
"accountsservice" appears to be a key dependency for some seemingly
important packages. In my case, those packages are "gnome-control-
center," "language-selector-common," and "language-selector-gnome." The
package "ubuntu-desktop" (which is a commonly-installed package) has
"gnome-control-center" as a dependency. I cannot see how uninstalling
"accountsservice" will not significantly reduce overall functionality
and/or break something.

[Bug 981289] Re: Window list entries colored in white instead of dark (GNOME Classic / Ambiance theme)

2012-05-29 Thread Julian Clark
I can confirm that the fixes from revision 225 resolve the issues with
the combination of Compiz and GNOME Classic. (For a desktop deployment,
I created a session type that has GNOME Classic as the base, and Compiz
running on top of it.) Now, it's just a matter of waiting for the Ubuntu
Artwork Packagers to create a new package...

[Bug 1069757] Re: [Upstream] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2013-04-12 Thread Julian Clark
I will second that LibreOffice 4.0.2 from the LibreOffice 4.0 PPA
resolves the aforementioned issues in Raring (13.04). Just today, LO
4.0.2 moved from -proposed to -release. However, installing LO on
Precise (12.04) from the same PPA does not resolve all of the issues.
The only problems I could find with using files via network storage
after installing in Raring were related to WebDAV (not being able to
open files directly from Nautilus, and not being able to save files that
do not already exist). The same issues existed in Precise, with the
addition of not always being able to open files on SMB/CIFS/Samba shares
from within LibreOffice. A general I/O error is the result. Opening
files from Nautilus worked fine, though. I would imagine that the major
focus for bug fixes in LO at this point -- regular repositories or PPAs
-- is Raring and later.

[Bug 951627] Re: all Kyocera network printers stopped working with cups 1.5.2

2012-05-15 Thread Julian Clark
CUPS 1.5.3 was just released today (15 May 2012). Coincidentally, this
was right when I noticed this bug. Hopefully, the necessary changes and
bug fixes can be incorporated into the Ubuntu packages for Precise,
since an update to 1.5.3 is highly unlikely.

[Bug 951627] Re: all Kyocera network printers stopped working with cups 1.5.2

2012-05-15 Thread Julian Clark
I forgot to mention that I was having the same issue with CUPS 1.5.2 and
Kyocera printers (specifically, the FS-3900DN, FS-4000DN, and FS-
C5030N), all while using KPDL and other Foomatic/PostScript drivers. The
PPDs were not exactly recent -- about six years old (the ones from the
Kyocera website). The application that was being the most difficult was
Firefox. Jobs would take at least five minutes to process and print, but
they would eventually print. The HPIJS drivers do seem to work, though.
With HPIJS, jobs would make it to the printer in seconds (as expected),
rather than minutes. Preferably, I would use the KPDL drivers.

I was having similar PostScript issues with other printers -- though not
as bad -- so I believe that this is a PostScript issue in general.
