[Bug 938630] Re: Ubuntu loads acer-wmi on Sony laptop; WiFi not working

2012-02-22 Thread John Perry
I did not try older versions of Ubuntu so I do not know whether older
versions have the issue. I am happy to try older versions out.

Which Ubuntu versions shall I go for?

[Bug 938630] Re: Ubuntu loads acer-wmi on Sony laptop; WiFi not working

2012-02-23 Thread John Perry
Neither /sys/class/leds, /sys/class/backlight have an entry related to
acer-wmi.
Specifically,

$ ls -l /sys/class/leds/
σύνολο 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Φεβ  23 20:29 ath9k-phy0 ->
../../devices/pci:00/:00:06.0/:03:00.0/leds/ath9k-phy0
$ ls -l /sys/class/backlight/
σύνολο 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Φεβ  23 20:29 acpi_video0 ->
../../devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/backlight/acpi_video0

Even when I remove acer-wmi, those entries do not change.

Some of the hotkeys of the laptop work, while other do not. There is no
difference whether acer-wmi is loaded or not.
a. Lock touchpad: does not work
b. Mute/enable audio: works fine
c. Decrease/Increase volue: works fine
d. Decrease/Increase display brightness: it works, but it apparently is mixed
with the "enable/disable screens" functionality. I have dual-head, and it
changes the screen size or disables/enables the external display.
e. External display shortcut: almost works
f. hibernate shortcut: it invokes hibernation. Did not get the hibernation to
work yet (might work)

As the laptop has the AMD E450 CPU/GPU, I think it might not work with previous
versions of Ubuntu.
If there is more to be tested, I am happy to do so.

[Bug 939868] [NEW] Sony VPCEL2S1E, some hotkeys not working

2012-02-23 Thread John Perry
Public bug reported:

Trying with Ubuntu Daily 12.04 (20/2/2012),

Hotkey Fn+F1 (disable touchpad): Not working
Hotkey Fn+F2 (mute/unmute sound): Working
Hotkey Fn+F3/F4 (audio lower/higher): Working
Hotkey Fn+F5/F6 (brightness lower/higher): works, but also invokes the
"enable/disable external monitor" (also changes resolution?)
Hotkey Fn+F7 (enable/disable external monitor): works but also appears to
change resolution (using with HDMI)
Hotkey Fn+F12 (hibernate): Works fine (with open-source graphics driver, hangs
if FGLRX is used)

[Bug 939868] Re: Sony VPCEL2S1E, some hotkeys not working

2012-03-28 Thread John Perry
Thanks for the reply.

1. The keyboard devices are

AT keyboard: input/event4
module: input/event7

2. The AT keyboard controls these hotkeys that work

scan code: 0xA0 key code: mute
scan code: 0xAE key code: volumedown
scan code: 0xB0 key code: volumeup

The AT keyboard controls these hotkeys that has NO effect

scan code: 0x46 key code: scrolllock

(the Scroll Lock LED does not lit up)

The module (sony_laptop) controls these hotkeys that have NO effect

scan code: 0x0C key code: fn_f1 # Should be 'touchpadtoggle'
scan code: 0x10 key code: brightnessdown
scan code: 0x11 key code: brightnessup
scan code: 0x12 key code: switchvideomode

3. cat /sys/class/dmi/id/sys_vendor
Sony Corporation

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name
VPCEL2S1E

4. Attached.

for the keyboard device input/event7

which works fine.

I pressed the combination of keys that would produce ScrollLock.
ScrLk is shown in blue on the NumLk physical key, therefore to get
ScrLk I physically pressed Fn+NumLk in order to get the ScrLk key.
When I pressed Fn+NumLk, I got the following output from "keymap -i"

scan code: 0x46 key code: scrolllock

Although the keyboard emits 'scrolllock', the rest of the software
does not interpret it as such, and the Scroll Lock LED is not lit up
(and it's not working).

These are what I get when I press the keys. I did not adjust the
output or try to tinker in /lib/udev/keymaps

Thanks. I can test the fix for the touchpad toggle.

ADDITIONS:
1. I just tested Fn+F7 (that produces "switchvideomode") with HDMI
output and it works fine.
2. I also checked again Fn+F5/Fn+F6 (decrease/increase brightness) and
I verified that they perform a "switchvideomode".
That is, currently, on a dual-head setup, both Fn+F5/Fn+F6 work
exactly like Fn+F7 (switchvideomode), instead of affecting the
brightness.

[Bug 846871] Re: dropbox crashed with KeyError in __getitem__(): 'content-length'

2012-03-30 Thread John Perry
Therefore, this package should be more resilient if the network is not up yet.
When Ubuntu boots up, the wireless network may take several seconds to get
activated. This is especially true when the router does not broadcast the SSID.

[Bug 938644] [NEW] [VPCEL2S1E, Conexant CX20590, Mic, Internal] No sound at all

2012-02-22 Thread John Perry
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu Daily (20/2/2012) and I am experiencing issues with
the sound.

Specifically, I cannot record audio, neither from the internal
microphone, nor from the red input jack.

pavucontrol does not recognise any audio input from the card.

Alsa does not recognised the HDA codec:

[ 12.564311] hda_codec: CX20590: BIOS auto-probing.

(Analog audio playback is OK; did not try HDMI output yet)

Adding: I get the TypeError only when I try to install the "post-release
updates" driver.
I also tried with different locales in case the problem is specific to
locale/translation; the problem is NOT specific to locales.

Installing the release FGLRX driver works fine.

[Bug 1187338] Re: Kernel panic / hard freeze lock with 3.5.0-31-generic (fglrx)

I tested the latest kernel 3.5.0-34-generic #55-Ubuntu (x86_64) from the

Specifically, I have been running 3.5.0-34-generic #55 for three hours

[Bug 1187338] [NEW] Kernel panic / hard freeze lock with 3.5.0-31-generic (fglrx)

2013-06-04 Thread John Perry
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 with fglrx 13.4. The system works fine with
the exception:

If I run either kernels 3.5.0-31-generic or 3.5.0-32-generic, I get a kernel
panic/hard freeze within about 5-30 minutes of using the computer.
When the kernel panic occurs, the system is frozen. Neither the mouse, nor the
keyboard are responding. I need to perform a hard reset in order to use the
laptop again.

Using an older fglrx driver, the system would freeze predictably within
5 minutes of running. With fglrx 13.4, it freezes within 10-20 minutes,
predictably.

I managed to get the kernel panic details using "netconsole":

[Bug 1185285] Re: [saucy] fglrx fails to build against linux 3.9.0 (missing version.h)

2013-06-04 Thread John Perry
I am affected as well with 13.10 (Daily - installed yesterday) while
trying to install fglrx-updates.

I remember the same issue happening with earlier versions of Ubuntu
(perhaps 12.04).

A workaround is to run (adjust paths accordingly)

ln -s /lib/modules/3.9.0/build/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h
/lib/modules/3.9.0/build/include/linux/version.h

which allows to complete the compilation.

2013-06-05 Thread John Perry
Public bug reported:

A fresh installation of saucy (today's daily) completed succesfully.
I then tried to install the closed-source graphics driver (from Software
Sources) and got this error.
(it probably is a "version.h missing" problem).
