[Bug 357673] Re: No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume, sliding LCD brightness on X31, X32, T60, R50e, T42, R52

2009-05-15 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Will the 'hal' bug #372874 see any love?

Fixing bug #372874 and enabling thinkpad_acpi hotkeys for brightness-keys DOES
fix the brightness issue.
Brightness-notification will then be handled correctly by g-p-m!
Modprobe option to enable brightness hotkeys:
options thinkpad_acpi hotkey=enable,0x8d

The sound-notification is another story, and should be investigated further.
HAL should be made aware whether sound-volume-buttons are hardwired or not.
Have a look at gnome-keybinding-properties, as the sound-volume acpi-events
ends up here.

bwalex:
I do acknowledge your solution, but I still think Canonical should go for the
long-term solution.

2009-05-29 Thread Johannes Hessellund
I realize my acpid-solution only works when restarting acpid from within
the xsession. This is because of the dbus signal system. acpid must have
the users dbus-session-bus-address to send the notification. Sorry about
that.

Anyway the right way of solving the brightness is still fixing the 'hal'
bug, and let g-p-m do the work. g-p-m was designed to to this, and it
works. I did compile hal with the fix and enabling the hotkeys in
thinkpad-acpi.

The workaround is great. But its always better to fix the cause.

Please some dev look into bug #372874 for a review, patch for hal is
included!

[Bug 380699] [NEW] Perform unidirectional SSL/TLS shutdown on data connections

2009-05-26 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Public bug reported:

This came up as the result of FileZilla releasing a new version of their
client that no longer worked with ProFTPd and other FTP servers due to
an adjustment in how that client reacts to TLS/SSL session closes. If
the client doesn't receive proper notification, it aborts the session
(this is my understanding).

There has been some discussion over whether the client's interpretation
and subsequent implementation of the RFC's is correct or not, but
perhaps some discussion can be had here and perhaps ultimately a
resolution. As it is now, FileZilla >= v3.1.0 can no longer connect to
ProFTPd via TLS/SSL.

The upstream bug report is available at
http://bugs.proftpd.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3094

The bug has been fixed upstream in proftpd v1.3.2rc2

The changeset of debian to Version: 1.3.1-14 contains this note:

   * [PATCH] New 3094.dpatch.
Implements unidirectional shutdown of TLS/SSL sessions which is mandatory
to support recent filezilla and possibly other clients. This will avoid
many headaches for Filezilla >=3.1 users reporting failures in connecting
 proftpd servers.
 (closes: #498136)

This has been merged, so it should be fixed for Jaunty.

This fix could be backported to Hardy, as it is LTS!

Also see bug #289574

2009-05-03 Thread Johannes Hessellund
I think brightness events should be handled by gnome-power-manager.
Maybe it is just a bug in there!??

My T42 handles brightness and sound in hardware.

Gnome-power-manager should accept the event, show a notification, and
remember the current state of brightness.

I am not sure which app normally handles volume events, but I would
think its a bug in there!

Maybe a combination with hal not forwarding event, because it knows this
stuff is handled by hardware ?

I think a script is not the right way. Finding the real bug should be
done!

2009-05-04 Thread Johannes Hessellund
I dont know how to fix for the sound volume.

But for brightness, the I think the right solution is to enable the hotkeys,
and let g-p-m handle it.
g-p-m only does notification and no actions. Unfortunately the notification
does not reflect the real brightness level on my box.

Brightness should be fixed in g-p-m.
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-power-manager/trunk/src/

bwalex:
As your a C programmer, I am sure you could easyli patch g-p-m to fix the
brightness issue !?

For sound button events:
Maybe it is posible to disable hal's handling of the these keys, and let the
apci scripts in /etc/acpi handle it. This way polling is avoided!

Found a better way to disable hal's handling of the events

Instead of editing /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30

Simply add attached hal file to /etc/hal/fdi/information.

The file overrides the keymapping of thinkpad extra button.

But you could easyli delete the brightness handling to.

Also playing flash-videos is sluggish.

Changing to XAA acceleration solves this. (Approx. same performance as

Radeon r100-rv200 should use XAA accelration. EXA is a big regression!

[Bug 364639] [NEW] [Regression] vblank interrupts increase during 'DPMS off'

2009-04-21 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Using freshly updated Jaunty.

Radeon driver generates more interrupts during screenblanks ('xset dpms
force off') than not.

Measuring with powertop 1.11 my hardware generates approx 10 wakeups/s .
When issuing the 'xset dpms force off' wakeups increases to approx 60/s.

This seems to be radeon driver generating vblank interrupts during dpms
off. Thus preventing the CPU to enter C3-C4 state.

=> increased powerconsumption during dpms!

Using repos opensource radeon driver.

Hardware: Thinkpad T42, Radeon 7500.

For more info read dri-devel list:

[Bug 335447] Re: Thinkpad function key (Fn+F3) to switch off backlight no longer works

2009-05-12 Thread Johannes Hessellund
I'm not sure if that is posible, as it seems gnome-screensaver
surpresses the keyevent after it has catched it.

I think the problem here is that the screensaver is responsible for
locking the screen, whereas the gnome-power-manager is responsible for
saving power by turning dpms off.

At least the screensaver should send and event to the gnome-power-
manager to decide if the screen should be turned off.

I think this bug does NOT concern acpi, but a combination of gnome-
screensaver and gnome-power-manager!

Personaly I set up a acpi event catching Fn+F1 to call screenblank.sh,
which works as predicted. Fn+F1 is still handled by acpid. But this is
just a workaround!

During idle use with LVDS on (brightness as low as possible), my laptop uses
between 8,3W and 8.8W.
During idle with lvds turned off (DPMS off), it uses 8,4W.
Measured with powertop.

This means I have no real powersaving, by letting it turn off the
monitor !

Normally I could win ½ hour on batter by letting dpms turn off the lvds.

Please look into this.

[Bug 275709] [NEW] First by of week should be configurable

2008-09-28 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hamster-applet

In the overview dialog the first day of the week is sunday.

This should be configurable. In europe (at least Denmark) first day of
week is monday!

gconf might already have an entry for this for evolution.

[Bug 275712] [NEW] Activity selecter

2008-09-29 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hamster-applet

Would be nice if the activity selecter has case IN-sensitive.

If acivity already in the database, it should not create a new one if
only the case is different.

"Reporting bugs" should be equal to "reporting bugs"

Also completing with would be very nice.

And would be nice to have easy shorcuts for common activities. Activity
switching made easy!

[Bug 149076] Re: I can't write a cd

2008-07-16 Thread Johannes Hessellund
This bug just appeared for me today!

I dont burn cd's often. Last time I burned a cd was 2 weeks ago. Today i
wasn't able to burn either audio or data cd's. Tried Brasero,
Gnomebaker, Serpentine, Nautilus-cd-burner.

Any of the resent updates causing this? I'm not really sure what has
been updated the last 2 weeks, but I guess the kernel was updated.

[Bug 277404] Re: hp laserjet postscript text print does not print some characters

2009-03-26 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Unfortunately it didn't fix bug #313713 !

I'm printing on a HP Laserjet 4 Plus which should support PS level 2.
Printing on Gutsy worked. Problems started with Hardy. I did try out the Gutsy
ppd, but that didn't fix anything.

The printer gives me this error:
Error: invalidfont
Offending command: definefont
Stack:
/Font
-dictionary-
/KPSHBO+f-1-0

The .ps sent to the printer says its level 2, how can I verify it ?
Seems to be an issue embedding the fonts!

540 (not sure about the M 530):
 http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31766603.pdf

the architecture does support clock and power control, through the
C-states. It seems not to be only a thermal solution, but what do I
know!

Is C-states control the throttling/thermal technique you are talking about?
And is C-state handling taken care of, in the current Hardy kernel?
