I for one could not do this, as attempting to continue to login at the
lower resolution results in a hung machine that does not get to a login

[Bug 382501] Re: CIFS File Transfer from Ubuntu to Windows Share results in 0 Bytes File ! The File is LOST

2009-06-01 Thread Jeruvy
I can confirm this behavior only with the colon in their name. I tested
the other examples in these posts ( ) @ with no incident. I'm thinking
this is specific to samba, since using nautilus the file does appear to
copy ok at first, but when viewing from a windows machine the original
file never appears, only the truncated-zero-byte file.

[Bug 382730] Re: shutdown after extreme heating while watching videos or doing long numerical simulations on msi m670

2009-06-02 Thread Jeruvy
You are describing a BIOS initiated safety shutdown.

Most BIOS's will shut down the system immediately when the temperature
hits a prescribed limit.

I would run memtest (boot the ubuntu CD and select memtest) for a 24
hour period and see when it shuts down, reboot the PC after a few
minutes go into BIOS settings and check the temperatures.

This is typically indicative of a hardware problem (failing CPU, dead
fans, etc.)

You may want to consider getting a notebook cooler to try and keep the
temps down, but it's likely something has failed.

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use smb:// as library location

2009-12-08 Thread Jeruvy
Confirmed the workaround works on Karmic. If you access the share via
'guest' access it may require you to specify this when it requests the
login details. I use user permissions and when entered the command
asked for username, workgroup name and password, then mounted the drive
(even though nautilus had already mounted it).

I'm not really agreeing with the fact that it's not a paper cut, since
if a new user was migrating from Windows or setting up a dual-boot like
the majority of new users, it's possible they would have a share with
their music and would want to tell Rythmbox to look there. Since the
SMB would already be available or can be setup this isn't a truly
intuitive method since it would complain that a 'valid' share isn't
accessible. Especially since Rythmbox is the default player. If this
was not the default I'd agree with this invalidation. If I hadn't found
a workaround, first I'd have looked for an alternative player, failing
that I would have considered NOT using Ubuntu for this reason alone. I
guess if I had never used a computer before (I think it should be
assumed anyone who's used a computer has used or is using Windows due to
bug#1) then I may agree, but I think they are very very rare.

[Bug 489725] [NEW] USB Printer detected but cannot add to configuration or print

2009-11-28 Thread Jeruvy
Public bug reported:

Attempting to add my printers to Karmic is proving very difficult. One
Printer is on a CUPS server but Printer config refuses to connect to the
server. I'll report that issue separate from this one.

The other printer is LOCAL to this machine connected via USB. It is
detected, but will not ADD. Obviously won't print either. Running the
TROUBLESHOOTER resulted in the following text:

Page 1 (Scheduler not running?):
{'cups_connection_failure': False}
Page 2 (Choose printer):
{'cups_dests_available': [], 'cups_queue_listed': False}
Page 3 (Local or remote?):
{'printer_is_remote': False}
Page 4 (Choose device):
{'cups_device_attributes': {'device-class': u'direct',
'device-id':
u'MFG:Brother;CMD:HBP,BRPJL;MDL:MFC-420CN;CLS:PRINTER;',

'device-make-and-model': u'Brother MFC-420CN'},
 'cups_device_listed': True,

Page 5 (Locale issues):
{'printer_page_size': None,
 'system_locale_lang': None,
 'user_locale_ctype': 'en_CA',
 'user_locale_messages': 'en_CA'}

Since the printer was detected a 'clear' indication of the problem would
assist me in understanding why it will not ADD.

I would clearly expect a detected printer to add, request drivers,
provide some error that is relevant. That is not occurring.

[Bug 489725] Re: USB Printer detected but cannot add to configuration or print

2009-11-28 Thread Jeruvy
Interesting development, I logged into the CUPS admin page from the
karmic machine, tried to print a test page, received a CIFS error (I was
expecting this since the config is for the Windows system this machine
dual boots with) but Firefox indicated a printer driver was missing
(!!), printer configuration loaded, then asked me to run through the
wizard to add a printer. My printer was not listed, tried something
similar, and added succesfully, but a test page did not print.

I'll try getting printer drivers for this and trying to install.

But why was the via cups method capable of determining the missing
drivers and not the regular configuration tool?

This page looks outdated.

Attempting to walk through the first step of troubleshooting.

Manually Specify Module Parameters
* First you must find which model of sound card you use, so run this
command:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
It will return model of your sound card(s), for example: "Codec: Realtek
ALC260", so your sound card is ALC260.

In actuality it fails:

cat: /proc/asound/card0/codec#*: No such file or directory

This is on a upgraded Ubuntu 10.04.

Is there any point to continuing if step one fails?

In fact it's a silly typo, in my case the directory is actually called
codec97#0, so a quick revision fixes it.

Given the amount of new users with sound issues I humbly suggest this be
properly updated so it works 100% without forcing users to give up on
step one.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-12-29 Thread Jeruvy
I can confirm these steps in Lucid. It would appear selecting the
NVidia device would make sense, but it results in this error message.
What is odd is that if I set it as 'default' it will then go through the
motions of 'recording' but when it's done I get an error and nothing is
played back (This issue is reported in other bugs).

I encountered this error attempting to get a valid input device for
recording, this was encountered along the way. I fixed it by
reinstalling pulseaudio.

[Bug 702146] Re: Evolution error

2011-01-12 Thread Jeruvy
Thank you for your bug report.

I am unclear what errors you are getting to verify this is an issue with
evolution.
Can you provide some steps to recreate this?

Thanks.

[Bug 393012] Re: [SRU] smb: Error while copying file, "Invalid argument"

2011-02-28 Thread Jeruvy
Will this be fixed for 10.04? I am a bit surprised to see that the
samba package is not installed on my desktop:

$ sudo apt-get install samba
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Suggested packages:
  openbsd-inetd inet-superserver smbldap-tools ldb-tools
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  samba
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 6,822kB of archives.
After this operation, 18.4MB of additional disk space will be used.
Get:1 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main samba
2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.3

Yet autofs seems to mount my SMB shares on the network (I have no shares
on this machine) without a problem. However as noted above, the version
of samba does not meet the same version that fixes this issue.

So I'm not sure if this is fixed for lucid LTS.

Yes I have to note this is a bug with gvfs on lucid.

Shares sporadically fail and work.

I'm wondering if grub2/BCE isn't conflicting. Also I wonder i
installing to a dynamic disk would be an issue?
