[Bug 560123] Re: sun-java6-plugin inconsistency

2010-04-15 Thread Jason J. Herne
I can confirm this behavior at least as far as "No install button is
displayed" in both the search results window and on the screen that is
displayed when you click the "more info" button (see screen shot by
kiwinote).

I'm not sure what "list view" is so I cannot confirm there is an install
button there,

NOTE: I am not the original bug submitter.

This podcast worked for me in Rhythmbox without any problems, I simply
told Rhythmbox to create a new feed and I copied and pasted the URL
given in the original post. Rhythmbox proceeded to start downloading
one of the available podcasts. I clicked the play button and it started
to play.

I'm running Lucid Beta updated as of 4/6/2010.

[Bug 554930] Re: Internal data error reported during the incident. CD failed to play, and is jammed in the player.

2010-04-08 Thread Jason J. Herne
Hi Donald,

Because you mentioned that you are a first time user of Ubuntu I'd like
to welcome you to Ubuntu and also provide a little assistance for you.

You mention the cd is stuck in the player. Do you mean that you cannot
get the cd out of your computer when you press the eject button? If
this is true you might want to try restarting your computer. After it
restarts you should be able to press the eject button on the cd-drive of
your computer... wait about 5 seconds... and the drive should open and
give your disc back.

If, after getting the disc back, you would be so kind as to recreate
this bug so we can figure out the problem it would be most appreciated.
We will need you to follow some "out of the ordinary" procedures so we
can collect debugging information.

1. Open a terminal. Do this by clicking (at the top left hand side of
your screen) "Applications", then click "Accessories" then click
"Terminal". A terminal window will open. Please complete steps 2 & 3
inside this window.

2. Type the following without quotes "killall rhythmbox" then press enter
3. Type the following without quotes "rhythmbox--debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt"
then press enter

Now rhythbox should start. Please insert your cd and/or do whatever you
did originally to create this problem.

4. Once you have recreated the problem, then close rhythmbox, then you
may close the terminal you opened.

5. A file was created when you did step 3. It is named "rhythmbox-
debug.txt" Now you will need to attach that file to this bug report.
Please visit this bug report on the launchpad website and click "Add
attachment or patch". Then click the "browse" button and look for the
file named "rhythmbox-debug.txt". Click on that file, then click "open".
Finally, click the "post comment" button to upload this file.

Thanks for your help. Please let us know if we can be of further
assistance.

[Bug 551217] Re: Messenger plugin

2010-04-08 Thread Jason J. Herne
In case there is any confusion, the OP is reporting that the "IM Status"
plugin for Rhythmbox does not "clear" the status that it sets in
Empathy.

If you start playing a song Empathy's status will get set to whatever
you are playing. This is correct and normal behavior. However when you
stop the song OR quit Rhythmbox the status is still set to the song you
were previously playing.

If the user is using Pidgin instead of Empathy then the status is
cleared when you stop the song or quit Rhythmbox. This is the expected
behavior.

I can confirm this running Lucid fully updated as of 2010-04-06

michtom,

Thank you for your interest in helping Ubuntu. Lucid (the complete name

What Pedro is asking you to do, provided you feel comfortable with it,
is to update your system to run the latest development version of Ubuntu
10.04 and then use Rhythmbox to see if the bug still exists.

You can find cd images of Lucid here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/

[Bug 548851] Re: IM Status plugin does not reset status message on end playback.

2010-04-08 Thread Jason J. Herne
The problem seems to be this:

file: rhythmbox/plugins/im-status/im-status/__init__.py
--
def get_mc5_status (self):
...
for acct in am.Get (MC5_AM_IFACE_NAME, "ValidAccounts"):
...
if status[2] != "":
  return status[2]

return None
--

This algorithm is doing the following:

Loop through all empathy accounts.
If the status of the current account is not an empty string then return it and
save it so we can restore it later.
If we do not find an account with a status that is not an empty string then
simply return None.

the None value is implicitly used by this plugin to mean that we never saved
the status in the first place, so we never bother restoring it.

Here is the kicker: Empathy (MC5, rather) uses an empty string as the default
status message. Even though the user is seeing the status as "Available"...
status[2] is actually an empty string.

The proper fix seems to be to change the return statement to return an empty
string instead of None.

NOTE: This patch has also been submitted upstream.

** Patch added: "Return empty string instead of None from set_mc5_status"

2010-04-01 Thread Jason J. Herne
I can confirm that Nautilus seem to me "missing" the delete key event
sometimes. I have the same issue as OP.

If instead of simply pressing the delete key you hold it down, the file
will be deleted. Holding the key down caused multiple "delete" key
events. This is why my theory is that Nautilus is somehow missing the
first delete key event.

This used to work perfectly fine in Karmic and every other Ubuntu &
Linux distro I've ever used.

[Bug 519553] Re: Right click menu could confuse users, leading to accidental removal of panel applet

2010-04-06 Thread Jason J. Herne
In my opinion, The simplest approach to this seems to be:

1. Add a handle to the Indicator applet
2. Add a "Close Indicator Applet" right click menu entry that only shows up if
you right click on the handle.
3. Remove the general "Remove from panel" right click menu entry.

It may not be 100% intuitive but it should get the job done for Lucid.
This is something that seems like it should be fixed before Lucid is
shipped.

[Bug 623390] Re: terminal commands to change ownership & permissions from root to my user name/group aren't working even though I get a confirmation that they were changed.

2010-11-11 Thread Jason J. Herne
Hi John,
Thank you for taking the time to share your bug report.

You seem to be trying to change the permissions on a file that lives on
a Windows partition. Windows usually uses the NTFS file system. NTFS
uses a permission/ownership model that is not really compatible with the
Unix/Linux methods for permission/ownership.

Here is a link that explains the situation somewhat, and offers a
potential solution: http://askubuntu.com/questions/11840/how-to-chmod-
on-an-ntfs-partition

Since this is not really a bug you might want to search or ask about
this in the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/.

Thank you again, and good luck :)

[Bug 632897] Re: Mouse acts as if clicked when moving across browser windows

2010-11-11 Thread Jason J. Herne
Hi Michael,

Do you happen to be using the touch pad on your laptop? If so... many
touch pads interpret a rapid double tap as a mouse click and hold. If
you happen to be accidentally double tapping on the touch pad just
before you move the cursor to the edge of the screen that would explain
the behavior you are seeing.

If this is what is happening to you then you can control this behavior here:
System -> Preferences -> Mouse -> Touchpad.
Under the Touchpad tab there are several options, one of which is "Enable mouse
clicks with touchpad".

If you are not sure about this... you might try un-checking "Enable
mouse clicks with touchpad" to see if the problem goes away.

2010-11-11 Thread Jason J. Herne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 666174] Re: password to connect to the internet appears twice

2010-11-11 Thread Jason J. Herne
I've been noticing this problem as well. I believe the OP is referring
to the Gnome Keyring password dialog. I find that it forces me to type
my password 2 or 3 times before it will "accept" my password. The first
time I type my password in the dialog goes away and immediately
reappears just as though I had typed the wrong password.

I have confirmed that this is not simply an issue of mistyping my
password the first time. This happens at every reboot no matter how
careful I am at typing my password.

Please let me know if I can provide more details.

[Bug 512251] Re: [Lucid Xubuntu] lshw corrupt lastmountpoint

2010-10-07 Thread Jason J. Herne
I'm adding a patch that fixes this issue. This is merely a backport of the code
that fixes this bug upstream.

I created the patch using lshw 02.14-1build1 as found in the Maverick
repository. I've tested it and it fixes the problem.

lshw version B.02.15 is released but since it is not in Maverick it
looks like a backport is the only way we're to be free of this bug
before the next Ubunutu release.

[Bug 603734] Re: Icons missing on gtk apps

2010-07-09 Thread Jason J. Herne
I do not think this is a bug. A while ago the decision was made to turn
off icons in menus by default for Gtk apps. The rationale was that the
icons did nothing to clarify the menu entry's purpose and only cluttered
the user interface.

If you want to change this steting you can do the following:

Run gconf-editor (alt+f2, then type gconf-editor), go to
desktop>gnome>interface and checking 'menus_have_icons'. You might also
be interested in checking 'buttons_have_icons''.

[Bug 624982] Re: rhythmbox crashes in three seconds after startup

2010-08-28 Thread Jason J. Herne
I noticed the complete back trace posted above was collected without
some of the debugging symbols. Here is one that has all the function
addresses symbols resolved.

[Bug 624982] Re: rhythmbox crashes in three seconds after startup

2010-08-28 Thread Jason J. Herne
Another interesting note.

I erased my rhythmbox configuration directory and copied my old one
form my Karmic partition and it started right up! :)

rm -rf ~/.local/share/rhythmbox/
cp -a /media/karmic_OLD/.local/share/rhythmbox/ ~/.local/share/

So this my be a viable workaround for others having this problem.

[Bug 621602] Re: Tomboy crashes when sync set to Ubuntu One

2010-08-29 Thread Jason J. Herne
A work around for this is to use the following settings for Tomboy Sync:

Service: Tomboy Web
Server: https://one.ubuntu.com/notes/

This will allow Tomboy to work with Ubuntu One Synchronization.

[Bug 617994] Re: Slow performance and high CPU usage on Maverick

2010-09-08 Thread Jason J. Herne
I did a bit of digging and found this thread on Nvidia's forums:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=6d2356bfbad61b24cdc14c1417a2cb0f&t=154563

One poster In particular ran gtkperf which was showing extremely slow
performance in font related tests. The poster later claims that "It
appears to be related to anti-aliasing; if I turn off anti-aliasing the
performance problem is gone".

I am unable to test this as I am not at my system with the Nvidia card.

[Bug 617994] Re: Slow performance and high CPU usage on Maverick

2010-09-08 Thread Jason J. Herne
This bug MAY be a duplicate of 629910
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/629910

This reporter of 629910 states the following:

"Switching font rendering from 'Subpixel Smoothing (LCD)' to any other
setting in 'Preferences -> Appearance' makes the problem go away."

Can someone confirm this fix?
