In case there is any confusion, the OP is reporting that the "IM Status" plugin for Rhythmbox does not "clear" the status that it sets in Empathy.
If you start playing a song Empathy's status will get set to whatever you are playing. This is correct and normal behavior. However when you stop the song OR quit Rhythmbox the status is still set to the song you were previously playing. If the user is using Pidgin instead of Empathy then the status is cleared when you stop the song or quit Rhythmbox. This is the expected behavior.
