[Bug 1760937] Re: [Feature Freeze Exception]Update Ledmon in Ubuntu 18.04 05 new upstream 0.90

2018-04-10 Thread Jared Dominguez
Hey, I am (was?) the maintainer in Debian, which I'd been maintaining
for my old team. I must've missed the pings about the package but saw
this LP bug. Anyway, it's fallen really low on my to-do list because of
other work, even though I'd hoped to have gotten to it a while ago. I'd
really appreciate any help maintaining in Debian/Ubuntu. Honestly it's
something I had been maintaining in Debian because Intel wasn't; I think
ideally they should be the package maintainer as they're upstream. I'm
happy to help with pushing for business case with them on that if
desired.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-21 Thread Jared Dominguez
(NB: superm1 and I work for Dell)

Can anyone provide confirmation on this affecting them with the Dell XPS
13 (9350) with Intel i7? That's actually exactly what I'm running with
Artful without issue, and we have not seen any escalations from Dell
support on this issue on any Dell systems. Additionally, the 9350 does
not have a BIOS core from Insyde.

[Bug 1688317] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2017-05-08 Thread Jared Dominguez
You're running a non-OEM version of Ubuntu 16.04.1, which is too old to
fully support this platform. Canonical maintains driver backports for
this platform only for factory-installed Ubuntu 16.04, and that includes
backport DKMS packages. Either wait until this is backported to a later
Ubuntu 16.04 point release, use a later version of Ubuntu or purchase
with Ubuntu pre-installed instead of Windows.

[Bug 1512505] Re: [SRU] [HWE] Backport efibootmgr 0.12-4 to 15.04

2015-11-03 Thread Jared Dominguez
Hi, I maintain efibootmgr/efivar in Debian.

Ubuntu 14.04's efibootmgr (0.5.4-7ubuntu1) doesn't even use efivar, so
you don't need to worry about dependencies there.

If you're concerned about 15.04's efibootmgr (0.11.0-3), then you'll
need to observe the restrictions in efibootmgr's debian/control as
efibootmgr started depending on libefivar as of efibootmgr version
0.7.0-1. There are API changes in efivar that require that both packages
be updated together (around efibootmgr 0.11 - 0.12 IIRC). This is well
documented in the debian/changelogs for the respective packages as well
as the git history on Alioth.

As far as the efivar version dependency change in efibootmgr 0.12-2, it
has to do with the SONAME version format changing in efivar 0.20-2. This
is mentioned in the debian/changelog for efibootmgr 0.12-2 and the git
history on Alioth.

[Bug 1512501] Re: [SRU] [HWE] Backport efivar 0.21 to 15.04

2015-11-04 Thread Jared Dominguez
Steve:

Because you're going from 0.15-3 to 0.21-1, where major library changes
have occurred, efibootmgr heavily depends on libefivar, and
efibootmgr/efivar have a history of obscure bugs from corner cases.
You're free to avoid these extra steps if you like, but given the tight
relationship between efibootmgr and efivar, I wouldn't, particularly for
such a critical pair of packages.

[Bug 1550504] [NEW] lightdm unresponsive after suspend

2016-02-26 Thread Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

I'm using an Ubuntu OEM image on the Dell Precision 5510. After unboxing
and applying all updates (running apt-get update/upgrade multiple
times), if I suspend the system, when it comes back (or also after
failing to suspend), lightdm does not show a password field, and
selecting my username does not bring up a password field. If I click on
the gear in the upper right corner, I can choose to switch accounts;
doing that, after several seconds, lightdm comes back, and I can unlock

[Bug 1550538] [NEW] periodically after suspend/resume wpasupplicant fails to authenticate

2016-02-26 Thread Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

After suspending and resuming, periodically wpasupplicant fails to
reauthenticate. I'm prompted for a password to reconnect. I enabled
debugging for wpasupplicant. Something that draws attention is seeing
"wlan0: WPA: 4-Way Handshake failed - pre-shared key may be incorrect".

updates have been installed.

[Bug 1541671] [NEW] backport Microsoft Precision Touchpad palm rejection patch

2016-02-03 Thread Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

The Broadwell XPS 13 (with touchpad in the more feature rich I2S mode
that's used in OEM Ubuntu images and the default on newer kernels) and
other systems utilize a touchpad conforming to the Microsoft Precision
Touchpad specification. However, palm rejection on Linux did not work on
relevant systems because support for the confidence bit was not
supported for touchpads following this standard. As a result, palm
rejection does not work on MSPT touchpads, resulting in degraded
functionality for users.

Allen Hung at Dell developed a patch that allows the Linux kernel to
utilize the confidence bit for touchpads reporting themselves as
Microsoft Precision Touchpads. It has been accepted for include in the
4.5 kernel. It looks like the patch has been accepted in the linux-
stable tree (though I do not know what the timeline is for actual
inclusion in stable Linux kernel versions):
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/commit/?id=25a84db15b3f3a24d3ea7d2baf90693bcff34b0c

This request is to include this patch in supported versions of Ubuntu. I
believe it is safe to include this patch as an SRU, which can be dropped
once the patch makes its way into the stable kernel upstream updates.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

** Patch added: "25a84db1.patch"

Yes, I did a full reinstall and tested all four cases as in my last

installer in UEFI mode since I was trying not to make my life too

well. I did not customize the install at all and copied the output of

[Bug 1318477] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9530] Wakes from sleep after exactly 24 hours + 3-5 seconds

2014-05-22 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Could you do two different tests?

1) Re-enable only Smart Connect. Does the issue persist?

2) With Smart Connect enabled, can you check if the intel-smartconnect
module is loaded? In your apport report, it looks like it gets loaded...
The kernel should output "Disabling Intel Smart Connect" if the module
is working correctly.

Also, are you dual-booting or do you just have Ubuntu installed?

[Bug 974450] [NEW] irqbalance classifies network interfaces with custom/renamed interfaces as class other

2012-04-05 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

The irqbalance daemon classifies network interfaces with non-eth* names
as class "other" instead of class "network". In particular, this affects
any machine with biosdevname enabled (NICs named em* and p*p*).

I have verified this in Precise beta 2. I run "irqbalance --debug" and
grep for the interrupt using "grep em1 /proc/interrupts". grep shows:

  79:   2397   2660  0  0  0  0

irqbalance --debug shows:

[Bug 954668] Re: Hiberation doesn't work in Precise (worked in Oneiric) on Dell XPS 13

2012-04-26 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
It turns out that the answer was right in front of me (well, after some
research). Something had added a zram swap device. Because of there
being two swap devices, the kernel wasn't properly able to hibernate. I
removed the zram swap device, and now I am able to hibernate properly.

[Bug 799938] Re: Trackpad of Dell XPS 15z not working

2012-03-13 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
The XPS 13 also uses a Cypress touchpad, which can be confirmed by going
to http://support.dell.com/ and downloading the touchpad driver for this
system. Comment #36 notes the existence of a Cypress touchpad kernel
driver developed by Cypress, but it is not in the mainline kernel or the
kernel in Precise. I am not 100% sure that this driver from Cypress is
for the touchpad in the 15z and XPS 13, but it is highly likely,
especially because the driver handles multitouch (in kernel, which is
why it didn't get accepted into the kernel mainline).

[Bug 954668] [NEW] Hiberation doesn't work in Precise (worked in Oneiric) on Dell XPS 13

2012-03-13 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

Hiberation doesn't work in Precise (worked in Oneiric) on my Dell XPS 13. I can
add the following to /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/51-ubuntu-admin.conf
to get back the hibernate option:
 [Configuration]
 AdminIdentities=unix-group:sudo;unix-group:admin

However, if I hibernate, starting the machine just does a normal boot and does
not restore the previous state. The swap is large enough for hibernation:

[Bug 1430622] [NEW] Touchscreen stops working after upgrading to Utopic HWE stack

2015-03-10 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

The system is a Dell Precision M3800 Developer Edition, i.e. it has
Ubuntu 14.04 factory installed. If I upgrade the kernel and Xorg to the
Utopic HWE versions, the touchscreen doesn't work. *However*, if I
suspend and resume, the touchscreen starts working again.

I noticed the touchscreen not working with just upgrading the kernel
though didn't think of suspending/resuming to see if it came back.
However, I do know that the touchscreen stops working when upgrading the
kernel (3.13->3.16).

[Bug 1232990] [NEW] firmware for ath10k missing

2013-09-29 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

The latest linux-firmware in saucy is missing firmware for ath10k chips
even though the ath10k drivers exist in saucy. This is likely because
the ath10k firmware is not available in the upstream linux-firmware git
repository. http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath10k points
one to https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k. Grabbing that firmware enables
an ath10k device to properly work. As ath10k devices are shipping and
the driver support already exists in saucy, ideally this firmware will
be pulled in before saucy exits development.

[Bug 1413446] Re: [Dell XPS 13 9343] Audio broken with I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04

2015-10-12 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Chris: I'm well aware of the newer BIOS versions. I work at Dell on
Project Sputnik. The issue is that the I2S audio mode is not well
supported. There is now a quirk in the Linux kernel that sets the ACPI
_REV reported to the firmware to 5 only if on certain systems needing to
be quirked. (Setting _REV to 2 results in our firmware configuring audio
the same way it would be on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.) It would be
wonderful if this quirk did not need to exist in perpetuity, especially
since more and more systems will be using I2S audio in the future.

[Bug 962546] [NEW] support for biosdevname in livecd's

2012-03-22 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

Enabling biosdevname (described at
http://linux.dell.com/files/whitepapers/consistent_network_device_naming_in_linux.pdf)
is an option for Ubuntu and has been since 11.04. It is not yet enabled
by default, but it is an option that can be enabled by passing the
"biosdevname=1" option at boot. I am not sure if it is desired to allow
this feature in live images (such as the Ubuntu Cloud live image), but,
if it is, it seems like there may be a couple of bugs one may encounter
when doing so because of a couple files in the casper package:

dell@dhcp-164-224:~/precise/casper-1.312$ egrep -r "eth" * | egrep -vi
"([a-z]eth|eth[a-z]|^test|^doc|^po|^man)"
debian/changelog:  * Write /etc/network/interfaces entries for eth0, eth1,
eth2, ath0 and
scripts/casper-bottom/23networking:for interface in /sys/class/net/eth*
/sys/class/net/ath* /sys/class/net/wlan*; do
scripts/casper-bottom/23networking:for i in eth0 eth1 eth2 ath0 wlan0; do
scripts/casper-bottom/24preseed:chroot /root dhclient eth0 3>&- 4<&-
scripts/casper-bottom/24preseed:chroot /root ifconfig eth0 down

I am not familiar with how casper functions, so I'm not sure if this
would be a bug or if these files in scripts/casper-bottom are harmless.
I will note that on an Ubuntu Cloud live image that I tried, passing
"biosdevname=1" did not do anything, so it may be that this is not
possible for that build anyway.

[Bug 962587] [NEW] When using ifnet plugin and biosdevname is enabled, NetworkManager may treat wired interfaces as wireless interfaces

2012-03-22 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

>From the source for network-manager-0.9.3.995+git201203152001.04b2a74, I
see that NM would treat any NIC names resulting from having biosdevname
enabled (of the form em* and p*p*) as wireless interfaces. This is
apparent from src/settings/plugins/ifnet/net_parser.c and
src/settings/plugins/ifnet/connection_parser.c.

init_block_by_line in src/settings/plugins/ifnet/net_parser.c:

if ((conn = get_connection_config (pos)) == NULL) {
if (g_ascii_strncasecmp (pos, "eth", 3) == 0
&& strlen (pos) == 4)
/* wired connection */
conn = add_new_connection_config ("wired", pos);
else if (g_ascii_strncasecmp (pos, "ppp", 3) == 0
 && strlen (pos) == 4)
/* pppoe connection */
conn = add_new_connection_config ("ppp", pos);
else if (ignore_connection_name (pos)) {
/* ignored connection */
conn = add_new_connection_config ("ignore", pos);
} else
/* wireless connection */
conn = add_new_connection_config ("wireless", pos);
}

get_wired_name in src/settings/plugins/ifnet/connection_parser.c:

gchar *conn_name = g_strdup_printf ("eth%d", i);

It is not clear to me if any wireless interfaces would be named of the
forms em* or p*p*, so I do not know if it would be sufficient to check
the name of an interface to determine what type it is. However, it at
least would usually be incorrect to label an interface called, say, em1
as a wireless interface.

[Bug 962587] Re: When using ifnet plugin and biosdevname is enabled, NetworkManager may treat wired interfaces as wireless interfaces

2012-03-22 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
I forgot to add that information on biosdevname can be found here:
http://linux.dell.com/files/whitepapers/consistent_network_device_naming_in_linux.pdf.

It is not enabled by default on Ubuntu but has been available as an
option since 11.04. It is also enabled by default in the latest Fedora
and RHEL releases and an option in SLES.

[Bug 962616] [NEW] mii-tool assumes NIC names of the form eth* when given no interface(s) as argument

2012-03-22 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

On a system with biosdevname enabled, which names NICs in the forms em*
and p*p*, mii-tool will return the message "no MII interfaces found" if
mii-tool is called without specifying an interface. The correct behavior
would be to iterate through em* and p*p*. (More information on
biosdevname can be found at
http://linux.dell.com/files/whitepapers/consistent_network_device_naming_in_linux.pdf.)

[Bug 1416601] [NEW] touchpad does not respond to tap-to-clicks in I2C mode in Ubuntu 15.04 on 2015 XPS 13 (9343)

2015-01-30 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

Tap-to-click does not work unless I tap several times really fast (which
is really hard to do), which also causes the cursor to move. This is a
poor user experience.

Relatedly, sometimes when using two-finger scrolling, the touchpad will
get stuck such that I can let go and the cursor won't move. I can
continue using two fingers to try scrolling, which works, but I can't
get the cursor to move. If I tap the cursor several times really fast, I
can eventually get the cursor unstuck so it moves again. I suspect that
this is related to the tap-to-click issue.

[Bug 1413446] [NEW] Audio broken on 2015 XPS 13 (9343) in I2S mode in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04

2015-01-21 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
Public bug reported:

(This is a public bug report for LP1402828.)

This system has a dual-mode audio with an HDA and an I2S interface.
Which shows up depends on the reported _OSI from the last cold boot.
Since the kernels in Ubuntu 14.10/15.04 (15.04 uses 3.18 currently)
report an _OSI of "Windows 2013", I2S mode is used for audio.

A workaround is to pass acpi_os="!Windows 2013" as a kernel parameter,
but this is non-optimal since the mode of the touchpad is affected. It
also results in an alternate, less used and tested path in the firmware
to be used.

See the attached dmesg log for details on where the failure happens.
Notably,

$ dmesg -t | egrep "(audio|snd|INT3438)"
dmar: ACPI device "INT3438:00" under DMAR at fed91000 as 00:13.0
snd_hda_intel :00:03.0: enabling device ( -> 0002)
snd_hda_intel :00:03.0: irq 50 for MSI/MSI-X
haswell-pcm-audio haswell-pcm-audio: error: ADSP boot timeout
broadwell-audio broadwell-audio: ASoC: CPU DAI System Pin not registered
platform broadwell-audio: Driver broadwell-audio requests probe deferral

There's also a failure to load the codec firmware after a
suspend/resume.

[Bug 1163720] Re: Brightness control broken on XPS13 and 3.8.0-16, 3.8.0-22 and 3.11.0-12

2013-11-15 Thread Daniel Jared Dominguez
I tested on an L322X with _F_HD display and A09 BIOS in UEFI mode.

$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.11.0-14-generic root=/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root ro
splash quiet i915.disable_pch_pwm=0 vt.handoff=7

If I use i915.disable_pch_pwm=0 with the legacy OPROM enabled, I have to run
"echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness", after which the
backlight keys work. If I use i915.disable_pch_pwm=1 with the legacy OPROM
_disabled_, the backlight keys work without any additional work.

If I use i915.disable_pch_pwm=0 with the legacy OPROM _disabled_, your test
kernel fixes the backlight issue. (However, apparently Saucy's kernel causes
really bad graphics corruption if the legacy OPROM is disabled, which is a
separate issue.)
And for kicks, i915.disable_pch_pwm=1 with the legacy OPROM disabled brings the
system up with the backlight at its lowest setting.
