A quick fix is this:

"Remove telepathy-butterfly and you should just have telepathy-haze installed".

It works under Ubuntu 9.10, I suppose it works in 10.04 too.

[Bug 255307] Re: Can't connect to msn accounts

2010-04-27 Thread Ioannis Vranos
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

I am having the same issue with Empathy and MSN.

This is a major issue, since MSN is one of the largest (I think the
largest) IM network, and Empathy is the default client. I think this can
be a bad first impression for new Ubuntu users.

Needs to be fixed now, or the default IM client should be changed to another
client, like Pidgin.

I found this solution:

http://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8058121&postcount=9

that is,

"ok try this remove telepathy-butterfly an you should just have

and it just works!

There must be a conflict between the two libraries. I think this can be
provided as a fix in Ubuntu updates soon.

I checked it in my (for testing purposes) installation of Ubuntu 10.04
x64, and it worked.

What I did:

1. I "completely removed" telepathy-butterfly from Synaptic

2. restarted Empathy

(you may try to log out/reboot, although I do not think it is necessary)

3. erased the previous MSN account I had created

4. Created a new MSN account (be careful you enter the MSN
login/password correctly)

and it works here (with a non-Hotmail/Microsoft-related email address).

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

IM Network: MSN

Email address/Login: some_addr...@some_host.gr - ==> Not Microsoft
related (like Hotmail).

When I saw the message of Linda, I tried to connect to my MSN account,
and it did not connect indeed.

I completely removed telepathy-butterfly, created a new account, and it
works.

The same happens with 9.10 x64, which is my main installation currently.

I reinstalled telepathy-butterfly, Empathy doesn't connect, and I am sending
attached the text shown in empathy Debug window regarding empathy and
"misson-control" as two files.

> does stopping the running telepathy-butterfly and let empathy reconnect
> workaround the issue?

telepathy-butterfly runs for a very short time before Empathy fails, and
I don't have enough time to find its PID so as to kill it.

Since I am not much experienced with Linux, is there any way to kill it
by its process name?

[Bug 486301] [NEW] Display is darker after suspension and hibernation in Ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-21 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

OS: Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

After I awake my laptop after suspension or hibernation, the display is
darker than normal (reduced backlight/dimmed) and remains darker, until
I log off, when it becomes vivid again. Then I log on, and it is OK.

However this means that suspension or hibernation is not an option, since I
will have to log off because of the issue.

[Bug 555900] [NEW] Installing any science-* metapackage installs all science-* metapackages, that is all science applications, instead of installing only the specific category applications

2010-04-05 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

Installing any science-* metapackage, installs all science-* metapackages, that
is all science applications, instead of installing only the specific category

Some of these metapackages also install obsolete (version 8.3) postgresql

Also, removing any science-* metapackage, does not result in the removal of the

[Bug 437165] Re: UbuntuOne stuck in an endless aut hentication loop (always changes to «Authentication failed»)

2010-01-28 Thread Ioannis Vranos
I had created bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-
client/+bug/466632

which has been marked as duplicate with this one.

What I had reported was:

---

OS: Ubuntu 9.10 x64.

I have created a free account in Ubuntu one, and I am having only one
PC, a laptop. However it prompts me again and again, to add the machine,
as if it is a different machine, and now two machines are listed in
"Computers on your account".

I have erased one or more such entries previously.

---

However since some time ago, I have stopped experiencing this problem, I assume
it has been fixed. So I am not sure whether the issue I had, is related to this
one.

[Bug 442882] [NEW] Software Center should not use the word "Free Software"

2009-10-05 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Software Center uses the word "Free" for all the software, both in the
application itself, and in its available help.

Given the fact that there are some copyright issues like with
"ubuntu-restricted-extras" in some countries/circumstances, and also the fact
that someone may add a repository like Medibuntu with closed source
applications, I think the word "Free" should be replaced with a word like
"Available" in the application.

For example:

"Get Free Software", can become "Get Available Software", in the
application.

The sentence:

"The Ubuntu Software Center is a virtual catalog of thousands of free
applications available for Ubuntu - software to make your computer more
useful",

can become:

"The Ubuntu Software Center is a virtual catalog of thousands of
available applications for Ubuntu - software to make your computer more
useful", in the Help.

Well, the term "Free" as used in the open source world (and defined by
FSF: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html ), does not include free
to use, but closed source software.

In this case, because closed source, but free-to-use software can be
used (e.g. Google Earth in Medibuntu repository, or some company
providing a local repository of purchased software for their desktops),
I think the word "Free" must be replaced with a more accurate one, like
"available", "available to use", or something like that, to reflect more
accurately the availability to use some software, which may not be open
sourced, but may be even purchased.

So I think the examples I provided, are good examples of this usage:

"For example:

"Get Free Software", can become "Get Available Software", in the
application.

The sentence:

"The Ubuntu Software Center is a virtual catalog of thousands of free
applications available for Ubuntu - software to make your computer more
useful",

can become:

"The Ubuntu Software Center is a virtual catalog of thousands of
available applications for Ubuntu - software to make your computer more
useful", in the Help".

I have to note, I am just exchanging ideas here, not pursuing to
convince you in any way.

Consider the following scenario:

You setup a repository for your company's computers, at a http site like
www.mywhatevercompany.com, where you place software that your company
*purchased*, to be available to your company's desktops/worksations.

This additional software will appear in Software Center as it is now,
under the title "Free Software", which is inaccurate.

Software Center, Synaptic, Add/Remove Software, apt-get, etc, are used
to install, remove and update available software, not only
non-commercial software.

So, at the present time (as Software Centre is *now*), I think the
phrase "Available Software" instead of "Free Software" covers all
possible situations/scenarios, for now.

That's my thoughts. Also, I have to say I am not Ubuntu Linux "fanatic",
I just use it because it suits me better right now. Before Ubuntu, I
used Scientific Linux (a Red Hat Enterpise Linux "clone").

OK, these sound nice to me for now. I may come back to this in the
future. :-)

An alternative design you could consider for version 2 (based on current
Synaptic/Software Sources repositories of 9.04):

Get Software
|– Ubuntu Software
| |– [All sections currently contained in Software Sources::Ubuntu
Software]
|
|– Third Party Software
   |– MyExample Repository
   |– Medibuntu Repository
   |– Some Commercial Software repository

The reason for that. For example, currently the "Ubuntu Software"
section, in Software Sources, contains the option "Proprietary drivers
for devices (restricted)".

I think cases like this, can't be fitted in the original suggestion
mentioned above.

Perhaps another example of this, is the "Software restricted by
copyright or legal issues (multiverse)".

If you have not disabled NCQ in /etc/default/grub, if you run

fstrim -av

It has happened to me with *buntus 14.04.2, 14.10, 15.04.

@munbi, have you installed the latest firmware available for your SSD?

You can find it here:

[Bug 1449005] Re: trim does not work with Samsung 840 EVO after firmware update (EXT0DB6Q)

2015-06-24 Thread Ioannis Vranos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1338706 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338706

@CJ, this bug is duplicate of bug #1338706.

The title of it, is:

"Samsung SSD 840 failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1 failed to set
xfermode (err_mask=0x40) on upstream kernels >= 3.12".

So I presume the bug affects kernels since version 3.12, and kernel 3.10
has not the bug.

The issue still exists in some form.

Usually if one or more USB error messages appear, and you wait, they
disappear now, and the boot proceeds ok.

Sometimes however, like if you press a keyboard button before they
disappear, the issue remains.

[Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2015-05-14 Thread Ioannis Vranos
My post with all my typos fixed:

I have the same bug, "error -110" USB error messages, and when I reboot,
the computer's UEFI initialisation during boot, at the USB device stage,
is very slow.

The problem gets fixed temporarily, if you unplug the computer from the
power socket (or turn off the power switch, at the back of the
computer), and leave it off until the motherboard loses all its power.

It looks like it is some kernel 3.19 bug with USB ports. Some USB ports
remain powered on, if you shutdown the computer, for charging devices,
etc.

If you remove the power plug, all USB ports turn off, so the issue gets
fixed, until the issue reappears at some random time, when the kernel
gets loaded again.

The issue does not exist with *buntu 14.04/14.04.2, and 14.10.

It is definitely an *buntu 15.04 issue.

[Bug 1338706] Re: Samsung SSD 840 failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1 failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) on upstream kernels >= 3.12

2015-06-21 Thread Ioannis Vranos
@Cyberbob, there is a fix coming for *buntus 14.04 (Trusty), as you can
see at the beginning of this page ("Fix Committed").

When the message becomes "Fix Released", the updated kernel will be
avaible to all *buntus 14.04.

I do not remember if Linux Mint uses the official Ubuntu repositories.

If it does, when the message becomes "Fix Released", the updated kernel
will be available to Linux Mint.

Since Linux Mint doesn't show all updates available via its graphical
update program, you will have to install them, by running in terminal:

sudo apt-get update

and then

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

[Bug 1371965] [NEW] qt-sdk package installation results in a mess on Ubuntu 14.04, 14.04.1, and 14.10 Beta 1

2014-09-20 Thread Ioannis Vranos
Public bug reported:

OS: All Ubuntu flavours (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu
GNOME), of version 14.04/14.04.1, and 14.10 Beta 1.

When qt-sdk package is installed, the following happens:

1. Qt SDK 4.8 packages are installed.

2. qtcreator package is installed.

3. qtcreator package, installs Qt SDK 5.2 packages.

The result is a mess.

For example, the documentation is for Qt 4.8, but Qt Creator compiles
with Qt 5.2 facilities.

1. I uninstalled the packages:

gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

2. I installed the packages:

gstreamer-tools (0.10.36-1ubuntu1)
libglib2.0-dev (2.32.3-0ubuntu1)
libglibmm-2.4-dev (2.32.0-0ubuntu1)

libgstreamer0.10-dev (0.10.36-1ubuntu1)
valgrind (1:3.7.0-0ubuntu3)

3. I downloaded and compiled:

http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gst-plugins-bad/gst-plugins-

from the page: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gst-plugins-bad

gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, version 0.10.23, were created and

black with black background, which is difficult to read. I expect that it's
written in white with black background.
