[Bug 1231262] [NEW] xorg-server (2:1.14.2.901-2ubuntu5) saucy breaks build of intel and ATI drivers

[Bug 1533554] [NEW] Duplicate package entries shown when listing by package origin

2016-01-13 Thread Francis Brown
Public bug reported:

Synaptic 0.83 (also was in 0.82.5 I believe)

- Ubuntu Xenial

What should happen:

Synaptic should as previously show a single item for each package when
viewing package list from a particular 'origin'.

What does happen:

For many packages up to 4 identical entries are shown for each package.
See attached screencap.

Duplicate list items are quite literally identical and are true
duplicates as they relate to the identical package in all respects,
including full version. In fact, so much so, that selecting one of a
duplicate for an operation such as install/upgrade/remove etc selects
and then operates on all the duplicate entries as well.

Same problem has been noted on a real machine and in VM running variants
of Xenial - Xubuntu/Kubuntu etc, with or with any ppas present on
system.

** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1402551] Re: High memory usage of Xorg and kwin after Xorg security updates [nvidia]

2014-12-16 Thread Francis Brown
All that had their version bumped by the security fix.

Have noticed something interesting. Increased Xorg memory usage here
seems to be somewhat related to using Chrome/Chromium (or based upon)
browser with hardware accelerations enabled in the advanced options.
Each time I launch an instance it increases Xorg memory usage by ~ 30MB
which is not released when the application is closed. Disabling hardware
acceleration seems to eliminate that and I get very little or much
slower degrading of Xorg memory usage.

I would suggest this might be worth reporting to Nvidia?
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/ as seems possible it is
their drivers not liking the fixed Xorg as much as it could be a bug in
any other part of the graphics stack. I likewise see no problem at
present with intel hardware.

[Bug 1268418] Re: CPU Freq Issue

2014-01-12 Thread Francis Brown
You are probably using the new intel p_state governor rather than CPU
freq, as that is the default for newer kernels.

See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2179879

The official ubuntu kernels have the new governor disabled, but the
mainline ones you are running from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/ do not and will run with the p_state one.

That is a common problem with a range of these ath3k cards. I have one.
Have a search of previous bug reports, but there seems a lack of any
real solution for the majority of them.

Some say it can be a conflict on loading od usb3 driver, and/or an
alternative firmware loading method is needed but has not been adopted.
Bit of a mess really.

[Bug 1091510] Re: [Raring] Laptop gets stuck when plugging in the alimentation connector

2012-12-18 Thread Francis Brown
Similar problem here. Removing and plugging in the power connector
causes my machine to lock up.

For me seems to be a regression between the 3.7RC8 and 3.7 final
mainline releases, tested with builds from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

and equivalent results using raring 3.7.0-5 and 3.7.0-6 kernels, which
exhibit regression with the RC8 to final rebase.

[Bug 1091510] Re: [Raring] Laptop gets stuck when plugging in the power connector

2012-12-18 Thread Francis Brown
Further note: In my case, the problem was resolved by uninstalling the
Jupiter power panel applet. Was obviously doing something incompatible
with the recent kernel changes. I note that the applet did not need to
be started or a user logged in, so seemed to be some tweak the install
script for the applet had applied to power management on boot.

[Bug 1091510] Re: [Raring] Laptop gets stuck when plugging in the power connector

2012-12-18 Thread Francis Brown
Well, it still could be a newly introduced bug in the linux kernel
rather than a bug in jupiter that is the root cause here. However, with
development on the applet halted it may be a somewhat mute point unless
another application also exposes the same behaviour?

For reference, in case this does rear it's head in another form:

>From testing the daily builds of the mainline kernel a few days back, my
problem started with a commit some time after
27d7c2a006a81c04fab00b8cd81b99af3b32738d (built on 06/12/2012) and had
appeared by the next days kernel build (07/12/2012) with commit
18a2f371f5edf41810f6469cb9be39931ef9deb9. So a commit somewhere in the
pull requests merged for that intervening day caused my problem to show
up.

[Bug 1131487] Re: ia32-libs removed by last dist-upgrade (raring)

2013-03-03 Thread Francis Brown
Have you got the proposed repository enabled? And/or have mismatched
package versions available between i386 and amd64 libs?

That was the problem on one of my machines. i.e. that one of the
packages wanted for dual arch had failed to build for one of the
architectures, meaning that the same package version could not be
installed for both i386 and amd64. Hence an error in unresolved
dependencies that required removal of ia32-libs etc.

(proposed repo in raring should not be enable by default, as such
mismatches are possible in it.)

Solution for me was to downgrade anything from proposed and with version
mismatch, disable proposed repo, distupgrade and reinstall i32-libs.

[Bug 1027182] Re: Dell Lat D420 cannot come out of suspend

2012-07-20 Thread Francis Brown
Sounds like this problem introduced in the RC7?

https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/7/15/104

And fixed upstream in:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=blobdiff;f=kernel/time/timekeeping.c;h=3447cfaf11e7d61b11d30bc063967e47d85e59d4;hp=269b1fe5f2ae2f7e6c0bb0fac8ce9a54e2d4d278;hb=3e997130bd2e8c6f5aaa49d6e3161d4d29b43ab0;hpb=33d519feaccb8a1208f736d00f53a2a73d98ffaa

3.5.0-5.5 (the RC7 rebase) hits this bug for me.

While up to and including 3.5.0-4.4 is unaffected.

[Bug 1027380] Re: Resume From Suspend Unresponsive with Quantal 3.5.0-5 kernel on Quantal

2012-07-21 Thread Francis Brown
Well, that is a RC1.

So as the above bug wasn't introduced until the RC7 kernel, the fact
that the RC1 is not effected is not surprising.

Can you try with a post RC7 build? i.e. such as the daily build in the
link I posted earlier.

That is the most recent mainline build, in which the bug from the RC7 it
is supposedly fixed.

If that works OK, then when the kernel team rebase to the next RC8 and
upload ubuntu kernel based on that the problem should resolve itself
without anyone having to do anything more.
