[Bug 277684] [NEW] Unable to boot 8.10 beta x86-64

2008-10-03 Thread Estesark
Public bug reported:

My hardware:

Model: HP Pavilion dv5-1060eo laptop
Processor: AMD Turion X2 Ultra 64
Graphics: ATI Radion HD3450

(can provide more information if it is requested)

Scenario:

I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.10 beta, the x86-64 version. I did an md5sum
check before I burned the CD, which was fine (identical to the reference
string). I rebooted my computer and loaded the CD. I edited the boot
command to remove "quiet", and hit enter.

Everything seemed to be going fine, if very slowly, until it got to
'starting powernowd'. After a couple of minutes, the Ubuntu logo and
progress bar disappeared, and the screen changed to showing all the
recent events ('starting CUPS' was the last one to register "OK"), with
'starting powernowd' at the bottom of the screen. Underneath was a blank
line with a blinking cursor. I left it like that for at least fifteen
minutes, but it didn't change, so I forced a shut-down by holding down
my laptop's power button for five seconds.

I booted again, and decided to use the live CD's self-test option. It
showed the progress bar for a long time, and then it changed to a blank
screen, except for a blinking cursor in the top left. I left this for
about ten minutes, but nothing changed.

I booted back into Windows, and used UNetbootin to burn the ubuntu iso
to a 1GB USB stick. I restarted again and tried loading that. This time,
I got a lot further, but still not to the desktop - I got to the light
brown blank screen that usually shows before the face chooser or the
desktop, but at that point it stopped doing anything. I could move my
mouse cursor on the screen, but that was it.

As I did an md5sum check on my iso, and tried booting it from two
different methods, I suspect there might be a hardware compatibility
issue.

I'm not really sure where to go from here.

[Bug 277684] Re: Unable to boot 8.10 beta x86-64

2008-10-03 Thread Estesark
This is a new laptop that came with Windows, and I haven't tried
installing any versions of Ubuntu pre-Intrepid. It's possible to install
Hardy and then use the update manager to move to Intrepid when the final
version is released, isn't it? Assuming so, I will try downloading Hardy
and installing that. I'll report back when I'm done.

[Bug 277684] Re: Unable to boot 8.10 beta x86-64

Hardy booted fine but then the graphics go very strange indeed - lots of
green all over the place. Sorry that I don't have a screenshot or more
information.

I tried using wubi.exe to install Intrepid from within Windows, and that
actually seemed to work with no problems. However, I then had some
(admittedly minor) problems from within Ubuntu, also regarding graphics.
I couldn't enable 3d desktop effects using the default, open source ATI
driver, and when I went to Hardware Drivers, there were no restricted
drivers available to me. I tried manually installing the driver from the
ATI website, but I got errors identical to those described in this
thread: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?p=47380

After that, I restarted my computer, and X wouldn't load. I uninstalled
Ubuntu.
