[Bug 284994] Re: bluetooth-wizard unable to pair to fixed pin devices

2009-02-10 Thread Ed Guenter
Hello folks

I followed Igor's procedure, and got a bit further with my ubuntu 8.10 / Lenovo
T61p / Plantronics P590 combination.
hcitool scan
Scanning ...
00:03:89:82:66:26 590Plantronics
hcitool inq
Inquiring ...
00:03:89:82:66:26 clock offset: 0x4740class: 0x240404

I could even hear some wav sounds with aplay ... sometimes:

aplay -Dplug:bluetooth /usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz,
Mono

==> yes, but one second later

aplay -Dplug:bluetooth /usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz,
Mono
aplay: pcm_write:1394: write error: Input/output error

It still doesnt look like i have a fully useable "device" around. Neither kmix
nor audio setup or any
other utility seems to be willing to accept my headset.

Any idea what is missing?

[Bug 447197] Re: Packages with custom /etc/sysctl.d/30-foo.conf files can fail to install: start procps returns exit status 1

2009-11-12 Thread Ed Guenter
I tried to comment just the lines I saw flagged as error somewhere.
Didnt work.

So I commented the whole file; removed wine and added it again ... voila,
install works.

==> this seems to be a working workaround, but obviously there is still the
need for a fix.

[Bug 1667346] [NEW] After installation of 4-8-0-39 system crashes after login

2017-02-23 Thread Ed Guenter
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 on a Lenovo W530 thinkpad.

I installed the 16.04.2 HWE stack earlier this week; and run fine with
kernel 4.8.36 for two, three days.

Yesterday, a kernel upgrade to 4.8.39 came in.

Installation went fine; but upon reboot; when I try to login ... system
does full crash; it only shows my desktop background picture (no mouse
pointer, no dash, nothing) and doesn't react to any input any more.

I am using the unity desktop; and go with "standard" xserver (no
proprietary nvidia driver is used).

2017-03-02 Thread Ed Guenter
Update: a coworker with the same problem thinks that the problem is
caused by the fact that we have to use symantec antivirus on our Linux
machines.

So this only affects people running

A) unity

B) symantec antivus solution

Same for me. This happens very often when coming back form suspend or

Workarounds:
* restarting unity
* suspending again

Same here.

I simply stopped using nautilus file copy for *anything* that is more
than 5 files and 10 MB.

Just because it is always always always much slower than anything I do
on the command line.

Expiring is fine with me for now.

As said; I think this is more of a Symantec Antivirus problem.

My system is running 4.8.0-51 as of now; and not showing this problem

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-02-20 Thread Ed Guenter
So as Jason said ... Java and wine get a pass ... for how long?

And Jakob is right ... enterprise LTS users can stay on 12.04 for the
next years; but there are other enterprise users who will want to update
on a regular base; and not all of them might want to add yet another ppa
to fix this.

So, kde and xfce, here we come.

Bye bye unity, as I just started to fall in love with you.

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-02-07 Thread Ed Guenter
Thanks for breaking the 5000+ Ubuntu users within our company that
"enjoy" using such ancient applications like Sametime, Lotus Notes or
Symantec Antivirus. Maybe, in 5 years from now, such applications will
accept that unity exist and provide indicators. Today, they dont. Or
maybe unity is history in 5 years from now.

One of the few reasons I found to convince myself to dig into Unity was
the fact that such icons would work a bit better than on KDE. Now you
really took away one of the remaining "advantages" of Unity.

Excellent job. Thank you!

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-02-12 Thread Ed Guenter
Working in the same company as Chris Giltnane does ... I can only agree.

If whitelisting stays disabled ... unity turns useless for me and the other
ubuntu users in our company.
We will either turn to kubuntu/xubuntu ... or Redhat or Windows. If that is
where you want to us to turn to, fine.

I am just a bit ashamed because I tried to convince many of my Linux-
using coworkers in the past that unity is actually a great product and
worth learning about.

[Bug 864784] Re: Enableing second monitor causes crash.

2012-01-12 Thread Ed Guenter
Question:

Not sure if I am "affected" by this bug ... I am using a Lenovo W510 with
nvidia graphics.
After upgrading to 11.10 I figured at some point, that I cant undock my laptop
any more.
Earlier on, the laptop would simply switch to the internal display - but with
unity/11.10 ...
the xserver (nvida driver) is crashing.

I followed the advice of a coworker - when running unity2D the problem isnt
there;
I can (un)dock without any xserver crashes.

I found this bug entry here; saw it says "fixed"; so I added the ubuntu-desktop
ppa
and upgraded to unity 4.28 - rebooted; but unfortunately xserver is still
crashing upon undock.

[Bug 821408] [NEW] [USB-Audio - Logitech USB Headset, playback] volume slider problem

2011-08-05 Thread Ed Guenter
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.04 natty running Unity.

When changing the volume using the control buttons of my USB headset, I see:
a) when the volume is between 0 and 100% (according to the sound preferences)
... buttons work fine.
b) but when the volume is more than 100% (there is still a lot of room between
the 100% mark and the
right end of the volume slider!) only the "decrease volume" button has an
effect. This means:
When I put the slider to its absolute maximum, I can use my headset control to
decrease the volume.
But when using the "+" key ... volume does not change (although there is some
visible indication that
the button was pressed).
