[Bug 778319] Re: Installation via USB-stick impossible

2015-08-01 Thread DrJohn
Found this problem installing 14.04-2 server from USB stick created with
Startup Disk Creator. Installer mounts /dev/sdxn (the USB stick
partition, in my case /dev/sdc1) to /media but the installer looks for
it at /cdrom. Above solution to remount at /cdrom worked for me too. H/W
is an ASRock C2550D41 w/ dual Samsung 250-G SSDs at SATA 0/1.

[Bug 1093541] Re: [Asus P8Z77-V LK] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed

2014-01-04 Thread DrJohn
I don't know if there is any impact on my usage; the error messages are
too cryptic for me to know or imply where to look for resulting
problems. I have no other similar machine, let alone without the errors,
with which to make any comparison. Thus I am not in a position to make
any specific observation other than the machine does not crash, abort,
or otherwise behave poorly at a kernel level. Do you have any idea what
I might expect to see?

[Bug 1009531] Re: configuring grub-pc install devices did not work

2012-10-07 Thread DrJohn
Similar happened to me upon update manager upgrade to grub -pc
1.99-21ubuntu3.4. The "COnfigure Grub Devices" dialog offered choices of
/dev/sda and /dev/sda6. Selecting both of these, the Details display of
update manager showed

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot stat '/,'

I deselected /dev/sda6 and continued. Afterwards, but not rebooting yet,
I see the following. This (as can be seen) is a dual-boot Win7 / Ubuntu
12.04 machine.

[Bug 1009531] Re: configuring grub-pc install devices did not work

2012-10-07 Thread DrJohn
Grub menu, Ubuntu, and Win7 startups are normal.

I didn't note in the previous post that running dpkg-reconfigure
--frontend=gnome grub-pc did not change the output of debconf-show grub-
pc. So, this looks like a mis-directed attempt by the package upgrade
process to install Grub in the non-bootable Linux partition at
/dev/sda6.

[Bug 1047859] [NEW] Upon starting shotwell, gsettings-data-convert crash with signal 5

2012-09-08 Thread DrJohn
Public bug reported:

Start shotwell; after a few seconds a crash notification pops up: "The
application Gsettings Data Conversion has closed unexpectedly." Choosing
"Send an error report to help fix this Problem" appears to do nothing;
the Details portion cannot be copied to the clipboard. Title of details
report is "gsettings-data-convert crash with signal 5"

Occurs everytime on first launch of Shotwell after login. Choosing
"ReLaunch" for gsettings-data-convert, then quitting and restarting
Shotwell succeeds without the gsettings crash.

2012-09-08 Thread DrJohn
gsettings-data-convert crash also occurs again if choosing "Leave
closed" from the bug dialog popup, and then later restarting Shotwell
(w/o a new login). Counter-intuitive since choosing "Relaunch" for
gsettings-data-convert and then restarting Shotwell does not crash
gsettings... The gsettings crash seems to have zero impact on the
function of Shotwell or anything else;

[Bug 1006141] Re: nm-applet system tray drop-down menu items missing

2012-06-18 Thread DrJohn
Seems to be fixed after installing updates of 06-12-2012 including
network-manager:i386 (0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4, 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.1). However,
the fix could have appeared in the 06-15-2012 update that included
linux-image-3.2.0-25-generic:i386 (3.2.0-25.40). Didn't notice exactly
with which update it began to work.

[Bug 1006141] [NEW] nm-applet system tray drop-down menu items missing

2012-05-29 Thread DrJohn
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Asus EEE-1215N from 11.10 --> 12.04, the nm-applet
dropdown menus, right- or left-click, on the system-tray nm icon show
only 'Enable Networking', 'Enable Wireless', 'Connection Information',
'Edit Connections...'. Other items such as the list of wired and
wireless interfaces, available hotspots, wireless connection options,
and VPN options, are not present at first. After a variable time,
usually more than 5 minutes and as much as ~1 hour after boot-up /
login, the missing items appear.

At all times the network connections, wired and wireless, work normally,
except of course that I cannot connect to a different wireless spot or
start a VPN connection. All the nm-applet menu items appeared right away
under 11.10; this delayed behavior appeared only upon upgrading.

SIGKILL to nm-applet's pid followed by starting nm-applet again brings
it up with the full set of drop-down menu items.

Apparently benign so far: no noticeable side-effects, no crash or halt.
The system is in process of installing 12.04 LTS server; at this point
no additional packages beyond stock server plus ssh, lm-sensors. Running
3.2.0-29-generic. Was not successful in installing upstream 3.4.0.

[Bug 962376] Re: spicevmc not supported in QEMU binary

2012-12-31 Thread DrJohn
Works for me, but... the KVM guest window hangs after shutting down the
guest.

Ubuntu 12.04 host, VIrt-manager 0.9.1, Ubutnu 12.04 guest

Installed qemu-kvm-spice and changed link as in #10 above.
Installed python-spice-client-gtk
(restart Virt-manager)

Set the guest's Display to Spice (accept add channels)
Set the guests's Video to qxl (vga, vmvga show blank screens)

Qxl guest display remains blank through POST and system startup, then
comes up at login screen.

Pushes the guest display to same size as host's native desktop; also
enables clipboard between host / guest.

Upon guest shutdown the KVM guest window VM controls become
unresponsive, but window is destroyed by File, Quit.

Guest window hang on shutdown does not occur with Cirrus Video.

[Bug 658691] Re: mythfrontend.real crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()

2010-10-25 Thread DrJohn
Yes, crashes back to login prompt as stated in the second-above post for
a second machine, and the Xorg crash occurs on both o fmy machines. Bug
# 660833 is a duplicate -- the originator posted about this in ubuntu
forums as well. Definitely treat these as the same bug.

[Bug 658691] Re: mythfrontend.real crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()

2010-10-16 Thread DrJohn
Problem recurs on another machine: ASUS m4a78t, Ubuntu 10.10 desktop
with in-place upgrade from 10.04 --> 10.10. Myth desktop frontend role
with remote backend (the previously mentioned machine) via Mythbuntu
Control Centre, also upgraded in place; using nVidia current driver.
After the upgrade I completely removed / re-installed Mythbuntu but the
problem still occurred.

The two machines are similar: ASUS m3n78em and Asus m4a78t, both running
the current nVidia driver.

Using mythfrontend 0.23.1+fixes26437. Watch TV crashes out x-session and
returns to login prompt if CPU+ video mode is selected. Functions
normally with VDPAU. This probably is the same bug as originally
reported.

Do you want an apport dump from this second machine?
