[Bug 335543] Re: jockey-gtk crashed with ImportError in ()

2009-03-15 Thread Donald Allwright
I can confirm that simply running:

sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/python-xkit.postinst

fixed this problem. I looked into why the module couldn't be found and
xkit did not seem to be set up for python 2.6, only 2.5 - this would
suggest it is indeed the problem in python-central mentioned above.

[Bug 353721] [NEW] Kaffeine freezes when pausing and resuming DVB TV.

2009-04-02 Thread Donald Allwright
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaffeine

With a fully updated Jaunty (1st April 2009) when watching live TV
(DVB-T) it is possible to pause viewing. However when un-pausing, it
plays for maybe a second or two then freezes. This is 100% reproducible,
but I have never seen this problem with Intrepid. Running 'top' shows
there is a minimal amount of CPU activity from kaffeine, however the UI
is totally frozen and does not update at all. I also observed it while
pausing a DVD, although this didn't seem to be 100% reproducible.

Examining the disk showed that when paused it was successfully writing
the DVB data to file DVBLive-20090402T112748.m2t as expected. Even when
un-paused this file continued to grow as expected and the file was
playable, so the underlying DVB system seems to be functioning
correctly.

[Bug 332210] Re: since an upgrade to jaunty the rc.local is not loaded at startup

2009-04-08 Thread Donald Allwright
There's something strange going on here. I have been using the same
script (acerfand) and investigated further with modifications to the
script. The script ran fine in Intrepid, but in Jaunty when you hit the
final "exit 0" in rc.local, it exits acerfand as well. acerfand traps
this exit, and I used this to print out more information. If I put a
sleep 20 in rc.local after running acerfand, it will only be exited
after the 20 have expired.

I have tried a number of things, including double-backgrounding acerfand
(I verified that its parent ID was 1), running it using nohup and
running it in the background from a separate script, but all to no
avail.

This bug should NOT be closed as invalid, as the problem is not with the
included script. There has been a change of behaviour in Jaunty which at
least needs explaining, and may or may not be a bug in sysvinit or
indeed another package.

I will try and come up with a trivial script that shows the problem and
attach it here.

[Bug 332210] Re: since an upgrade to jaunty the rc.local is not loaded at startup

2009-04-08 Thread Donald Allwright
OK a trivial test case that demonstrates the behaviour.

/etc/rc.local has:

(/etc/init.d/testscript &) &
sleep 20
exit 0

The executable file /etc/init.d/testscript says:
#!/bin/bash
MYLOGFILE=/home/user/testscript.log

echo Starting testscript at `date` > $MYLOGFILE
echo Show that the script has detached and has a PPID of 1 >> $MYLOGFILE
ps -ef | grep testscript >> $MYLOGFILE
trap "echo script was exited at `date` >> $MYLOGFILE" EXIT

while true; do
echo testscript in loop at `date` >> $MYLOGFILE
sleep 1
done

and the output of testscript.log is:
Starting testscript at Wed Apr 8 11:36:27 BST 2009
Show that the script has detached and has a PPID of 1
root 2915 1 0 11:36 tty8 00:00:00 /bin/bash /etc/init.d/testscript

testscript in loop at Wed Apr 8 11:36:46 BST 2009
script was exited at Wed Apr 8 11:36:27 BST 2009

This shows:
(a) the script was successfully run
(b) the script was successfully detached, and became owned by init (PPID 1)
(c) it continued to run for 20 seconds
(d) the time it terminated coincides with the time the exit 0 is run in
/etc/rc.local
(e) the 'date' on the exit command is a bit weird. I suspect the trap command
line is run at the time it is encountered, rather than when the trap condition
is triggered.

So it seems at the point /etc/rc.local exits, it terminates processes it
has produced, regardless of whether it currently owns them. I was not
seeing this behaviour in Intrepid or Hardy.

Installed the package shipped with Intrepid -
kaffeine_0.8.6-2ubuntu2_i386.deb onto my Jaunty system. This also showed
the problem, suggesting that the cause lies in one of the libraries. Any
suggestions as to how I might track this down welcome.

attempting to un-pause. Possibly a xine problem?

2009-04-05 Thread Donald Allwright
I can confirm that when changing kaffeine to use 'alsa' instead of
'auto' (pulseaudio) as suggested, I no longer observe the problem. There
is a bit of delay between hitting the pause button and it actually
pausing, presumably due to the length of the audio buffer, but this is
not a serious problem. Kaffeine is now usable again. Should this bug be
assigned to pulseaudio instead of kaffeine?

I am seeing these symptoms also on an old Dell Inspiron laptop, which has no 3D
acceleration. A good example was when copying the Kubuntu gutsy RC CD image to
another system over the network (using fish:// KIO slave). During this the
mouse periodically stopped responding for a couple of seconds or more. I have
never noticed this on Feisty, but it has persisted on Gutsy-development for
some months. Current kernel:

[Bug 104593] [apport] displayconfig-restore.py crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-04-08 Thread Donald Allwright
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

I had just (successfully) configured my PC with dual monitors for the
first time, primary graphics card an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 card
running the nv driver module at 1280*1024, the second an old s3ViRGE
card which had been automatically configured to use the s3virge driver
at 1024*768 when using the automated guidance configuration tool.
However I was then unable to re-use this tool to make any further
adjustments. The crash is fully repeatable.

[Bug 93318] Re: After my last Feisty update I could not start X server.

2007-03-26 Thread Donald Allwright
I have had a similar problem when upgrading to 2.6.20-13 kernel. It
appears that the NVIDIA driver for this kernel is broken, at least as
far as this card is concerned (I have the same). I have tried a fresh
install to investigate a virgin feisty installation (my default is
heavily modified) and have found that the "nv" driver works (but with
reduced functionality as expected), but as soon as I try to enable
nvidia (including hand-editing xorg.conf) the x-server fails to start.
Unfortunately as this is a proprietary module it is probably out of the
hands of the ubuntu team to fix, unless it's a packaging error.

[Bug 498634] [NEW] Utility freebsd-mtree appears to create an invalid mtree file

2009-12-19 Thread Donald Allwright
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: freebsd-buildutils

I've been trying to use freebsd-mtree to capture and restore file and directory
permissions for a directory tree to be checked into a version control system. I
am able to create an mtree file, but when trying to compare the directory with
the contents of this file it always fails.
I set up a directory 'test' containing a subdirectory 'test1' in my home
directory and ran:
freebsd-mtree -c -p test
Which gave me the output:
# user: testuser
# machine: testuser-laptop
# tree: /home/testuser/test
# date: Sat Dec 19 22:51:16 2009

# .
/set type=file uid=1000 gid=1000 mode=0755 nlink=1
\056type=dir nlink=3 size=4096 time=1261263072.449459025

type=dir nlink=2 size=4096 time=1261263013.626458064
# ./test1
..

..

I piped this to a file 'mtree' then attempted to run:
freebsd-mtree -U -f mtree -p test

which gave me the output:
. extra
missing (directory not created: No such file or directory)
/ missing (directory not created: File exists)

I don't have ready access to a BSD system to run the original command
on, but this looks like it might be a problem with the port to Linux of
this tool.

[Bug 1284553] [NEW] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x7a000002 IPEHR: 0x0b140001 Desktop fails to display on boot up

2014-02-25 Thread Donald Allwright
Public bug reported:

Frequently on boot the desktop is not displayed and is just black. I am
able to switch to vt1 and run 'sudo service lightdm restart', and
sometimes the desktop appears correctly, but more often than not I just
get the black screen again. Seems like a race condition. After recent
updates the problem seems to be 100% reproducible and I am unable to get
a working desktop at all.

[Bug 663069] Re: "non-accessable symlink" errors when using aufs-shaddowed read-only root filesystem

2013-03-14 Thread Donald Allwright
I'm still seeing this on 12.04, but not on 13.04. Reproducible as
follows:

me@laptop ~/temp $ mkdir ro rw aufs
me@laptop ~/temp $ touch ro/dummy
me@laptop ~/temp $ sudo mount -t aufs -o dirs=rw:ro=ro none aufs
[sudo] password for me:
me@laptop ~/temp $ ls aufs/
dummy
me@laptop ~/temp $ rm aufs/dummy
rm: cannot remove `aufs/dummy': Operation not permitted
me@laptop ~/temp $

On 13.04 I don't get the error message and the file is 'deleted' (i.e, a
whiteout file is correctly created). Looks like the bug fix hasn't been
ported to the LTS release, but probably needs doing so.

[Bug 614592] [NEW] kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.35/fs/btrfs/volumes.c:1980!

2010-08-06 Thread Donald Allwright
Public bug reported:

Performing command "btrfs filesystem balance snapshots/initial/"
where snapshots/initial was a btrfs snapshot of the filesystem straight after a
fresh install of Maverick Alpha 3 (AMD64 desktop version) with /boot on
/dev/sda1 (ext2), / on /dev/sda3 (btrfs) in VirtualBox instance. It exited with
'Segmentation fault' before the crash report icon appeared. An update to the
'default' tree using Update manager was taking place simultaneously so the file
system would have been under heavy load.
