[Bug 148440] More than filesystem encryption

2008-07-08 Thread dimitris
Merely providing a plausibly unused filesystem is not enough.

You have to think about information leaking out of the use of the
plausibly deniable data, thus making it no longer deniable.

For example, using sudo with a command that takes filenames on the
deniable filesystem will result in syslog entries - on the *main*
volume.

Swap space is another possible leak vector.

The key is that you really have to compartmentalize the data, and due to
the complexity of a full-blown OS, I think that means you need separate
OS instances.

For example, consider an outer shell that's not much more than a
virtualization layer, with no swap space or (persistent) logging.
Within that, you'd have one "main" guest OS instance and any number of
deniable ones. This can be done truecrypt-style or in the ubiquitous
1%-free LUKS style outlined by the original poster.

Seems overkill for a quasi-default install though.

I'm not too familiar with grub, is it possible to synthesize a boot
entry in its command line and have it boot off "free space" or an
"empty" partition?

[Bug 76091] Re: kmilo-legacy needed to display brightness changes, zoom, etc, on Thinkpad T41p

2008-05-14 Thread dimitris
Very much still here with up-to-date Hardy. To recap, in order to get
the sound and brightness buttons to behave appropriately I have:

- Installed kmilo-legacy
- Moved kmilo_generic.desktop to kmilo_generic.desktop.disabled
- Unchecked "Set Volume in software" in "kcmshell thinkpad" (X60 has hardware
mixer)
- Bounced the KMilo service

[Bug 76091] Re: kmilo-legacy needed to display brightness changes, zoom, etc, on Thinkpad T41p

2007-05-24 Thread dimitris
The combined workaround (nvram permissions, installing kmilo-legacy,
disabling kmilo_generic.desktop) works here (X60 1709-CTO).

However, it also results in the loss of Fn-F4 suspend functionality.
This is on 7.04. Suspend on lid close and from the logout action still
works.

BTW you can make the nvram permission change "permanent" by editing the
nvram line in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules. I've changed mine
to 0640, group nvram.

[Bug 301174] Re: Use proper sound event instead of system beep

2010-05-04 Thread dimitris
Steps to reproduce on up-to-date Lucid on amd64 (Thinkpad X200s):

- System->Preferences->Sound->Sound Effects: Alert volume is at 100%, sound
theme is "Ubuntu", alert sound is "Default", "Enable window and button events"
is unselected.
- System sound is not muted, volume at some reasonable level (50% in my case).
- System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects: Select "None", click
"Close"; Window manager is metacity.
- Open Gnome Terminal: Edit->Profile Preferences->General: "Terminal bell" is
selected. Click "Close".
- In the terminal's window, hit Backspace on an empty prompt. The system alert
sound is played as expected.
- System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects: Select "Normal", confirm the
pop-up, click "Close"; window manager is Compiz.
- In same gnome-terminal window, empty prompt: Backspace produces no sound.
- System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects: Select "None"; window
manager is metacity again.
- Alert audible again.
- BTW, there's a compiz process still running even after the switch back to
metacity: "/bin/sh -c /usr/bin/compiz-decorator".

[Bug 432188] Re: [KARMIC] Thinkpad T42P volume OSD does not work

2009-11-01 Thread dimitris
On a X60 at least, Xzan's fix has an undesirable side-effect: When I
press the Thinkpad volume up/down keys, OSD is now displayed. However,
the volume up/down keys now control both the Thinkpad hardware mixer and
the main mixer. You can see that by watching the mixer/volume applet's
reported volume (dB / %) as you are pressing the up/down keys.

In effect, this undoes the "fix" from #355300. For even more gory
details, see the upstream bug at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524425.

After reading that I'm sticking with tpb :-(

[Bug 447665] [NEW] Contact menu in chat window doesn't draw, steals input, requires kill -9

2009-10-09 Thread dimitris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

This doesn't happen 100% of the time, and reproducing it seems to
require chatting with a Google Talk contact that is actually online. I
tried to reproduce with a contact that's offline but couldn't, and I'm
low on contacts that are happy to do Empathy debugging with me. Anyway,
steps to reproduce:

- Start a chat with a contact on Google Talk.
- After some messages are exchanged, click on the chat window's Contact menu.
- The Contact menu only draws "partially", i.e. only its rectangle is
drawn/filled with the background color.
- Empathy seems to have stolen keyboard and input focus desktop-wide: Alt-Tab,
mouse clicks do nothing, including on other visible windows unrelated to
Empathy.

Workaround:

- Switch to text console Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in.
- Find the empathy process and kill it with kill -9.
- Switch back to Gnome desktop Alt-F7.
- Empathy can now be restarted and will behave "normally" unless the steps
above are followed again.

[Bug 447836] [NEW] Sending files over Bluetooth fails

2009-10-10 Thread dimitris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: obexftp

In Jaunty, using obexftp version 0.19-7ubuntu2 I can send files to my
Nokia E71/N95 using obexftp in both these two ways:

obexftp -b xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx -p file.pdf
obexftp -b -p file.pdf

In Karmic however, both fail:

d...@detritus:~/tmp$ obexftp -b -p file.pdf
Scanning for ...
Seen: aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa
Seen: bb:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb
Seen: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
Browsing ...
Connecting...failed: connect
error on connect(): Invalid argument
Still trying to connect
Connecting...failed: connect
error on connect(): Invalid argument
Still trying to connect
Connecting...failed: connect
error on connect(): Invalid argument
Still trying to connect

In this case, the mobile doesn't even seem to receive the (browse? OBEX
push?) request. I'm saying that because although it and the Karmic host
are paired, the Karmic host is not trusted on the mobile (neither is the
Jaunty host).

Trying without the friendly name:

d...@detritus:~/tmp$ obexftp -b xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx -p file.pdf
Browsing xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ...
Connecting..\done
Sending "file.pdf"...-failed: file.pdf
Disconnecting..\done

In this case the mobile did respond to the OBEX push, and once
authorized the transfer "seemed" to happen - the "spinner" was moving.
However the transfer fails at the end.

[Bug 450069] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse "leaks" when turned off/on or after suspend/resume: Xorg eventually tops out on input devices

2009-10-12 Thread dimitris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

When a Bluetooth mouse "disappears" then "reappears", whether due to the
mouse being switched off/on or due to a laptop suspend/resume cycle, HAL
seems to "leak" input device entries.

For example, after switching my Bluetooth mouse off/on a few times,
lshal shows:

[Bug 447665] Re: Contact menu in chat window doesn't draw, steals input, requires kill -9

2009-10-14 Thread dimitris
I haven't been able to reproduce this in the last few days. There have
been updates to Xorg, telepathy components and lots of other stuff of
course since then that I've kept up with on my Karmic box, so this may
have been fixed. Leandro, any "luck" on your end?

Updating with the PPA works for me to but you really need to go sow with the
key compination which makes it kind of a temporary workaround and not a real
solution.
Keep up the good work!

[Bug 805849] [NEW] after ecryptfs-migrate-home, encrypted home will only mount on first login

2011-07-05 Thread dimitris
Public bug reported:

After being badly bitten by bug #344878, I decided to remove filename
encryption from my home directory. I backed up the whole home directory
then rm -rf'ed both /home/$USER and /home/.ecryptfs.

I then made a copy of the ecryptfs-migrate-home script and changed the
line:

ECRYPTFS_SETUP_PRIVATE_ARGS=""

to

ECRYPTFS_SETUP_PRIVATE_ARGS=" -n "

in order to have it create the encrypted home directory without filename
encryption. I did this because simply using ecryptfs-setup-private did
not work (possible further bugs, manpage lists -a option that doesn't
seem to exist).

Anyway. The new encrypted home directory seemed OK, auto[un]mounting on
login/logout.

I then proceeded to rsync back the old contents, taking care to
--exclude=.ecryptfs and --exclude=.Private.

The rsync finished without problems. But now I have a new problem:

- reboot the machine.
- log in (console). encrypted $HOME automounts.
- log out.
- log in. encrypted $HOME fails to mount: I get the dreaded "keyctl_search:
Required key not available" message.

Needless to say, the combined experience is dreadful for a supposedly
LTS version. Is there any way I can restore some sanity to this
encrypted home directory, or is it time to throw in the towel?

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04

[Bug 805849] Re: after ecryptfs-migrate-home, encrypted home will only mount on first login

2011-07-05 Thread dimitris
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 725862 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/725862

One additional observation:

After the first, successful login, I end up with two keys in the user
keyring:

: --alswrv 1000 0 user:
: --alswrv 1000 0 user:

Only key2 (i.e. sig2) matches ~/.ecryptfs/Private.sig.

After logout, key1 is removed from the keyring but key1 is still there.

On subsequent logins, key2 no longer reappears and, presumably that's
related to the automount failing.

Now, if I then manually remove (keyctl unlink @u) the "stuck"
key1 and logout, the next (one) login-automount (or manual ecryptfs-
mount-private) will succeed.

Is key1 somehow leftover from the previous instance of ecryptfs? If so
where is it persisting? Or are these two keys supposed to be there
after a successful login/automount?

[Bug 725195] [NEW] Application lens doesn't scroll with Thinkpad mouse wheel emulation

2011-02-25 Thread dimitris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When I use the Thinkpad's (X60, no trackpad) mouse wheel emulation -
which has been enabled for both vertical and horizontal scroll with
gpointing-device-settings - I cannot scroll the application lens at all.

Other scrollable widgets - terminal windows, various gtk etc. list
widgets, Firefox - scroll fine using the wheel emulation.

This appears to be different from bug 719616; I cannot scroll the lens
*at all* with mouse wheel emulation. Using the scrollbar I get that
bug's behavior.

Symptoms look identical to bug 301174. Also, FWIW, the sound
preferences tab fails to control volume, but does control muting, of the
alert sound after the manual xset and pactl steps from the description
are followed.

up to date Natty on Thinkpad, default Ubuntu sound theme.

Re: livehttpheaders: The latest upstream does support FF 3.6, as of Feb

Any chance of adding it back?

[Bug 351319] Re: Bug 188444 – playback is unreliable and broken in Amarok and JuK using phonon gstre amer backend

2009-04-18 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
This problem seems similar to mine, on Kubuntu Jaunty and a HDA Intel ALC861.
When I use Gstreamer Phonon engine, Amarok doesn't play anything at all,
although other apps do.

When I switch to the Xine backend (the default one in Kubuntu) from
systemsettings panel, then Amarok plays. But then, Amarok sound volume
doesn't follow the KMix sound volume. By experimenting (Xine backend) I
found out that Amarok "follows" the "Front" channel while KMix gives me
only the PCM channel (the Front channel can only be muted, there's no
apparent way to adjust it).

I found a similar bug report in KDE bugzilla, but the developers say it's a
Phonon issue. I' m not sure about that, since Amarok2 plays OK in Manriva
2009.1.
See: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189755

I run Kubuntu Jaunty with these packages installed:
amarok 2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu3
amarok-common 2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu3
phonon-backend-gstreamer 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu3

[Bug 363439] [NEW] Sudden X.org crashes on Radeon card

2009-04-18 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Public bug reported:

My desktop PC runs on an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+ with 1GB of RAM. The
PCI VGA adapter is a Radeon X300.
I experience sudden and without any apparent pattern X crashes. For instance, I
may be using Firefox with just one tab open and Gnome hangs. But I may also be
playing some 3D game (i.e. Neverball) or a Wine-emulated game (i.e. Grim
Fantango) and Gnome also hangs. But I may also use the system for a lot of
hours without any problem!

I have tested the RAM (memtest), as well as the ext4 formatted Western
Digital WDC WD800JD-22LSA0 hard disks. There seem to be ok.

The reason I' m reporting this against xorg-server is this log entry I
noticed after the latest X crash (I was watching the intro of Grim
Fantango in full screen):

I can't figure what the problem is or why it crashes. The monitor is a

Also, following bug #285603 I have removed every fglrx package (only
fglrx-modaliases was installed).

[Bug 31709] Re: K3b slow dvd burn speed

2009-04-20 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Hi again!
Seems my problems stemmed from missing dma setting.
I solved them by adding:

1) "options pata_ali atapi_dma=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/options (new file for me!)
2) "echo 1 > /sys/module/pata_ali/parameters/atapi_dma" in /etc/rc.local

and finally I added
 "pata_ali atapi_dma=1" to "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules"

[Bug 276478] [NEW] "apt-get install msttcorefonts" caused "no disk space" error

2008-09-30 Thread Dimitris Georgiadis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: msttcorefonts

running "apt-get install msttcorefonts" displayed some error lines in the
terminal about "insufficient disk space"
(as a linux newby I didnt pay attention to those at the time).

Before installing this package I accidentally depleted all free disk
space on my ubuntu partition (causing many things to not work), but
afterwards I freed up around 1,8 GB of space. When running this package,
I had that much free, but the error still came up.

After installation of package, I opened in my Ubuntu's Open Office, an
open office document (saved as .doc) created under the Open Office
windows version with windows fonts. I noticed that I couldnt find any of
the windows fonts (like Arial, Times New Roman) available, but if I
placed my cursor amidst existing text the font selection would show
"times new roman" as if it understood the font.

After the above I had to restart the computer for a Windows session,
then as soon as I rebooted into Ubuntu again, I got a notification that
this package crashed and that lead me here. Sorry If I am doing it wrong
but its my first bug report ever and I have only used Linux for 4 days.

[Bug 31709] Re: K3b slow dvd burn speed

2008-10-01 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Ι confirm and reckon a very very old bug. In my case, it appeared some one year
ago with both of my DVD-RW devices. They are the same LG model HL-DT-ST DVDRAM
GSA-4167B.
This is the output of /sbin/hdparm -i:

 Model=HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B   , FwRev=DL12,
SerialNo=25C5C279C2B5
 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
 RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
 BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
 (maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
 PIO modes: pio0 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
 AdvancedPM=no
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-2,3,4,5

Problem description is very simple. Burning speed for CDs or DVDs does not meet
(any more) the capabilities of this device, when using on-the-fly mode of K3b.
Furthermore, during CD/DVD burning, the desktop at large seems to lag behind.
I mean, CPU load is peeking and mouse stops moving periodically (only for a
moment). In the end, CDs/DVDs are OK, but this is a torture (and a
time-consuming effort).

The problem manifests in Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, Debian as well as Fedora 8 and 9.
So it is not distro specific.
Also, I am not sure that this is necessarily a K3B specific, since Gnome CD/DVD
Creator or Brasero are not burning on the fly. Even then, it takes 7 minutes
for a CD 700MB burn and mouse lags are there (but not so frequent or heavy as
in K3b)

The CPU is AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+.

[Bug 218334] Re: [i945] lockup on mac mini 945GM [8086:27a2]

2009-01-12 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
I have the same problem with a fresh 8.10 install on a 2 years old Intel
Centrino laptop. The VGA is this:

dimit...@laptop:~$ lspci -v | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Didn't have any problems in previous Ubuntu releases (hardy, etc).

I will try the deb packages suggested here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/218334/comments/84

and report back shortly.

2009-01-12 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
No, no luck for me. I added the lines

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/intel-gfx-testing/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/intel-gfx-testing/ubuntu intrepid main

to sources.list, updated, upgraded, restarted, but the message "could
not enable desktop effects" keeps on appearing. There are the installed
packages:

dimit...@laptop:~$ dpkg -l | grep intel
ii libdrm-intel1 2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid
  Userspace interface to intel-specific kernel
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid
  X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display d

Note that 3D effects were always a click away for me, and work OK in other
distros (i.e. openSUSE 11.1).

I will try the xorg.conf modification now...

[Bug 218334] Re: [i945] lockup on mac mini 945GM [8086:27a2]

2009-01-12 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
:(

Nothing seems to work over here.

This my xorg.conf last lines, now:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "FramebufferCompression" "false"
EndSection

I restarted the x server but no luck.
I can't understand what's going on here. People report they are OK either by
using the testing packages or adding the aforementioned line in xorg.conf. In
my case, nothing works.

Anybody else with "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML

symptoms? :(

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2009-01-22 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Alps, I had the same problem with you, that is, I installed Vuze (from
apt then 4.0.0.2 from their site) then tried to update but it kept on
saying

"The following components need an update"
Core Azureus Version 4.0.0.4

although I did it again and again and again (and i had installed vuze
4.0.0.2!).

Then I realized that I was running the "azureus" script. When I clicked
on "vuze" script, then voila there was my 4.0.0.2.

So, maybe you 're making the same mistake with me... Try the vuze
script.

[Bug 328053] Re: No DMA for DVD-burner on ULi 1695 chipset

2009-04-13 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Hi,

I had similar speed problems (due to missing dma setting) in my Ubuntu
Jaunty installation with my 2 x ATAPI LG DVD Drives on an ASUS A8R32-MVP
Deluxe (ULi M1575 Southbridge). I tried these workarounds:

Added
1) "options pata_ali atapi_dma=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/options (new file for me!)
2) "echo 1 > /sys/module/pata_ali/parameters/atapi_dma" in /etc/rc.local

and finally I added
 "pata_ali atapi_dma=1" to "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules"

All these to be sure! :)

After the reboot (the dmesg messages still appear!) the problem was finally
solved.
Now I can watch and write DVDs at full speed.

I added a similar comment in an older but similar bug report, in case it helps
somebody:

[Bug 292142] Re: DMA and UDMA issues with intrepid

2009-04-13 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
I am adding my success story here, in case it helps somebody...

I had the same speed problems with my 2 x ATAPI LG DVD Drives on Ubuntu Jaunty
development. My mainboard is an ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe with the ULi M1575
Southbridge.

I mean dvd writing was extremely slow and I couldn't get a decent DVD
movie playback (too many lags).

Here is the dmesg message I was getting:
 [7.684439] ata8.01: ATAPI: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B, DL10, max UDMA/33
[7.684457] ata8.01: WARNING: ATAPI DMA disabled for reliablity issues. It
can be enabled
[7.684459] ata8.01: WARNING: via pata_ali.atapi_dma modparam or
corresponding sysfs node.

I followed these workarounds:
Added
1) "options pata_ali atapi_dma=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/options (new file for me!)
2) "echo 1 > /sys/module/pata_ali/parameters/atapi_dma" in /etc/rc.local

and finally I added
 "pata_ali atapi_dma=1" to "/etc/initramfs-tools/modules"

All these to be sure! :)

After the reboot (the dmesg messages still appear!) the problem was finally
solved.
Now I can watch and write DVDs at full speed.

Is there a Jaunty specific bug for this?

[Bug 207068] [NEW] No sound with Intel HDA ICH8 (chip SigmaTel ID 7698) in Hardy

2008-03-26 Thread Dimitris Kalamaras
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

Hi,

I've just installed Hardy beta and apt-get upgraded to the latest updates.
Everything seems ok (3D, webcam, etc), but there is no sound output.
The mixer applet seems to be working. All sound and video applications report
no problem and work flawlessly, nevertheless I don't hear anything. I checked
alsamixer, Master and PCM volumes are maxed, not muted. Also, I tried changing
device by the relevant menu on mixer applet. It gives me the following choices:
HDA intel (alsa mixer),
SigmaTel ID 7698 (OSS Mixer) and
Playback: ALSA PCM on front:0 (HDA Generic) via DMA (PulseAudio).

None of the above worked.

I had the same problem on Gutsy. I know there is a similar bug report
(#131133), with a link to http://tinyurl.com/35kbbn containing some
advices, but none of them worked for me before.

My laptop is of a local brand in Greece.
