I have the same problem with a fresh 8.10 install on a 2 years old Intel Centrino laptop. The VGA is this:
dimit...@laptop:~$ lspci -v | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) Didn't have any problems in previous Ubuntu releases (hardy, etc).
