[Bug 262330] [NEW] description of presseding netcfg settings and when to use preseed file and when to use kernel command line settings not clear enough
Public bug reported: Following a discussion with cjwatson on #ubuntu-installer : The installation guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-contents.html mentions: Of course, preseeding the network configuration won't work if you're loading your preconfiguration file from the network. But it's great when you're booting from CD or USB stick. If you are loading preconfiguration files from the network, you can pass network config parameters by using kernel boot parameters. """ Based on this I would assume that when creating a custom installer based on the mini.iso netinst image, because one "boots from the CD", network config parameters can be put in the preseed file. However, as cjwatson explained, the mini.iso reads the CD _after_ configuring the network and thus network config options have to be given as kernel boot parameters. I suggest rewording the above paragraph to: """ Of course, preseeding the network configuration won't work if you're loading your preconfiguration file from the network. But it's great when you're installing from CD or USB stick. If you are loading preconfiguration files from the network or booting from a "netinst" CD image, you have to pass network config parameters by using kernel boot parameters. (When using the "netinst" image, although the kernel boots from the CD, the preseed file is only read after configuring the network; even the CD drivers are loaded from the network.) """ (note: I am not sure "netinst" is the right word here, I think other parts of the ubuntu homepage, for example where one can download the cd images, use a different terminology) Also, what kernel parameters to use should be documented. Is it simple that any "d-i netcfg/foo type bar" can be put on the kernel parameters as "netcfg/foo=bar"? ** Affects: installation-guide (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- description of presseding netcfg settings and when to use preseed file and when to use kernel command line settings not clear enough https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262330 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 262356] [NEW] the fact that some parts on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization does not apply to netboot images is not made explicit
Public bug reported: The https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization page talks about "remastering Ubuntu install CDs", but it does not make it explicit that some parts of that page don't apply to netboot images. (In particular, a warning that preseed/file cannot be used with netboot images (even when booting from CD) should be included. Or, it might be enough to link to https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04 /installation-guide/i386/preseed-intro.html instead of https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-using.html The point is that if one start at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization and follows prominent links, one will miss https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04 /installation-guide/i386/preseed-intro.html and the table of preseeding methods. Reading https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386 /preseed-contents.html (where I got by following a link from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization) I didn't even notice that it is just a sub-sub section in a larger document: that is only apparent from the navigation bar at the bottom of the page and is really easy to miss in such a long document. [Bug 221805] Re: gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong
It was hardy Deciding whether the gnome-mount bug is still reproducible should be easy: after all it is just "fails silently if permission error". The cause of that permission error would be much harder to diagnose, but that is a consolekit bug anyway, so thats not this bugreport. -- gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221805] Re: gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong
No, it was an "allow access" permission. In my case the lack of permission was caused by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/consolekit/+bug/221844 I sort-of managed to reproduce the bug today on a not-too-out-of-date hardy system. I did the following: 1) Open System -> Administration -> Authorizations, set the "mount removable storage" permission for the active session to "No" 2) plug in pendrive 3) note that icon is not created on desktop (which is a plus, in the original bug it was created), but an entry shows up in the "Places" menu with "Mount pendrive" tooltip. 4) clicking on that entry in the "Places" menu has no effect. So, apparently the bug is half gone: an icon is not added to the desktop, but the other half still remains: I assume that the entry in the places menu could be used for mounting it, and that clicking on in launches the mount operation, which silently fails. -- gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221805] [NEW] gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-mount If one sets permissions wrong, so that $ gnome-mount --verbose -b -d fails due to org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy then, by default (i.e. without running gnome-mount with the above -v and -b parameters) mounting will fail silently, without a gui error message. This can happen, for example if the user manually sets the permissions in System -> Administration -> Authorizations wrong, or if there is a bug in consolekit (the situation I'm in.) This means that if there is such a permission problem, plugging in a usb thumbdrive causes the following: it gets recognized, an entry shows up in the "Places" menu, but clicking on it, to mount it, does nothing. This, (that doing a gui action has no effect and no error message) is highly frustrating. For example, if $ gnome-mount fails due to giving the wrong device name, it shows a nice dialog. (Even when running that command from a terminal.) I think such a dialog would be needed for permissions problems, as well. ** Affects: gnome-mount (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-mount silently fails if permissions are wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221844] [NEW] no session is set active by consolekit
Public bug reported: I installed hardy from the release candidate installer, and after a default install installed kubuntu-desktop. logging in either in a gnome or kde session, and running 'ck-list- sessions' shows 'active = FALSE' for all sessions, even the one currently active (the one shown on the screen). As a large part of default authorizations are set to 'No' for everyone except the active session, this breaks all sorts of things. (For example, mounting usb thumbdrives, or changing authorizations, etc.) If there is any way to debug this problem I would love to help, but I have no idea what I should be looking for (what logfile / etc.) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- no session is set active by consolekit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 493272] [NEW] complete freeze on boot with autologin enabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Installed i386 Karmic from installer cd, enabled 'log in automatically' during the install process. Did "aptitude full-upgrade", and now gdm freezes during boot: monitor is black, num-lock led doesn't react to toggling num lock key, no disk activity i.e. whole computer appears crashed. Can boot by selecting 'recovery' option in grub menu, which gives a command-line login, after logging in there, can start GUI with 'startx' (which launches desktop, i.e. not gdm login screen). My symptoms are basically the same as described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=826&postcount=5 (except that in my case the freeze is with a completely blank screen). [Bug 705354] [NEW] scipy.signal.convolve and related functions give drastically different results on karmic vs. lucid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: python-scipy Running scipy.signal.convolve, scipy.signal.fftconvolve and scipy.signal.correlate2d on 2d arrays (from a grayscale image) gives drastically different results when run on karmic versus run on lucid.
