[Bug 304079] Re: thinkpad_ec and thus tp_smapi can not be loaded

2008-12-09 Thread Christoph Bier
The author of thinkpad_ec wanted someone with this problem to file a bug
in the Kernel Bug Tracker: http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail
/linux-thinkpad/2008-November/045358.html. But compiling a vanilla
kernel fails for reasons I do not understand yet ...

[Bug 304079] [NEW] thinkpad_ec and thus tp_smapi can not be loaded

2008-12-01 Thread Christoph Bier
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 8.10

Trying to load tp_smapi ends up with the following (http://mailman
.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2008-November/045459.html):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo modprobe tp_smapi
WARNING: Error inserting thinkpad_ec
(/lib/modules/2.6.27-9-server/kernel/ubuntu/misc/thinkpad_ec.ko): No such
device or address
FATAL: Error inserting tp_smapi
(/lib/modules/2.6.27-9-server/kernel/ubuntu/misc/tp_smapi.ko): Unknown symbol
in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I run the server kernel to be able to address 4 GB of RAM:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -r
2.6.27-9-server

I attach some more information.

2009-05-14 Thread Christoph Bier
Sorry, Pedro I can't follow your argumentation! If a previously correct
configuration becomes wrong after upgrading I consider this as a bug.
I'd still really appreciate a hint which configuration files I should
delete to correct the mistake. I found the following two files:

ch...@lotus:~$ cat
.gconf/apps/panel/applets/workspace_switcher_screen0/prefs/%gconf.xml

ch...@lotus:~$ cat
.gconf/schemas/apps/workspace_switcher_applet/prefs/%gconf.xml

BTW: Pedro is right, I tested it. So, please change the status of this
bug.

Best
Christoph

[Bug 374882] [NEW] Workspace switcher shows only one row instead of three

2009-05-11 Thread Christoph Bier
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Jaunty the workspace switcher applet in the panel
shows only one row instead of three. Every configuration is ignored;
changing the 3x3 grid to e.g. 2x2 doesn't apply in the applet. But the
workspaces are actually arranged in a 3x3 grid (see screenshots). I also
run compiz.

With the vesa driver the laptop doesn't suspend at all. I get a blank
screen, keyboard is dead, network is down (remote login doesn't work
anymore) and after about 30 sec the fan starts running---I guess because
the CPU is running at highest frequency.

Can anybody try to install a vanilla kernel since I still fail to

author of thinkpad_ec recommended. I guess there are better chances for
a fix.

@Dominik: Unfortunately Henrique didn't answer to your message on the

[Bug 107951] Re: Booting fails after installation (GRUB error)

2007-05-12 Thread Christoph Bier
It's really weird: I can boot from the Ubuntu disk if the Debian disk is
plugged in. But then neither my CD-ROM drive nor my DVD drive is usable.
No medium is recognized and I have no glue to which device they are
connected to. I tried /dev/hda--/dev/hdf and /dev/sda--/dev/sdf---but
nothing is found. I can find problems related to the CD-ROM drive (LITE-
ON LTR-48125S) in dmesg. I attach the dmesg output. BTW: Both drives
work with Debian.

What can I do to have a working Ubuntu installation without the Debian
disk plugged in?? Thanks for any help!

Public bug reported:

After I had strange problems with a Feisty installation (reported here:

But my CD-RW and DVD drives do not work. They are not detected. The CD-
RW drive (LITE-ON LTR-48125S) is mentioned by dmesg with an error (see
link above) but the DVD is not.

I attach the output of 'sudo lshw -short'. If you need further
information please let me know.

2007-04-19 Thread Christoph Bier
This is some kind of OT but I use the opportunity to say something about
future development of Ubuntu: Don't forget those linux users that are
familiar with textual interfaces (and like them) for different tasks.
It's much faster at least on slow machines that are still very
widespread. On my office PC it takes more than 30 seconds until "System
> Administration > Software sources" is opened. Thus, yes, resurrect
apt-setup :-).

[Bug 107951] Booting fails after installation (GRUB error)

2007-04-20 Thread Christoph Bier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

After a successful installation from the alternate CD of the Feisty
final release the system doesn't boot. It fails with "GRUB Loading
stage1.5Read Error". Trying to boot from the first hard disk with the
install CD fails, too: "Error 25: Disk read Error".

I guess this is due to a mismatch of disk drive names. The hard disk is
connected to an ITE8211F ide controller on an Asus P5LD2/C board. But
partman-lvm listed it as a SCSI drive (sda). This is similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/107798 but it's not
the same.

As I'm in my office at the moment I have no access to the hard disk I
installed Feisty on. Which further information do you need?

** Affects: grub (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 107951] Re: Booting fails after installation (GRUB error)

2007-04-20 Thread Christoph Bier
The UUID-labels are used (I can access the HDD from my Debian
installation):

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic
root=UUID=fb7e259a-4de7-4810-9041-c981d9946e94 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic
quiet
savedefault

Now I changed menu.lst from "(hd0) /dev/sda" to "(hd0) /dev/hde" and
the stage1.5Read Error disappears. But now Error 25 appears immediately.

2007-04-20 Thread Christoph Bier
IMPORTANT HINT: Actually the HDD named /dev/hdf (Samsung, 80 GB) in the
following is /dev/hde within Ubuntu! It's only hdf now because I use the
Debian HDD (Maxtor) as master and the Ubuntu HDD (Samsung) as slave to
access the Ubuntu (Samsung) HDD.

Ubuntu machine: Samsung = /dev/hde
Debian machine: Samsung = /dev/hdf

Sorry for the confusion!

[Bug 108479] Re: Distribution Upgrade (to Feisty) fails: coreutils can not be installed

2007-04-21 Thread Christoph Bier
I guess the error is caused by the wrong install-info script. Install-
info is also provided by TeXLive (TL) that I installed manually to have
TL 2007 and the TeXLive path is searched before the system path. I just
chmod -x the TL install-info and the upgrade process is still running.
With 5.10 I had a similar problem I just remembered ... I wonder why I
didn't had this problem on my office PC with the same setup (Breezy and
TL 2007).

[Bug 112297] Re: Brightside forgets the edge flipping configuration

2007-07-03 Thread Christoph Bier
First of all I had to

mkdir .config/autostart

Then I created brightside.desktop in this directory. It worked. Thanks a
lot!

I wonder why this was only necessary on my wife's laptop and my desktop
PC while it was working on my laptop and office PC out of the box.

[Bug 107951] Re: Booting fails after installation (GRUB error)

2007-04-28 Thread Christoph Bier
I did not change "root (hd0,0)" to "root (hd0) /dev/hde" in menu.lst as
I wrote above but in device.map. Without changing this I don't even can
access the GRUB menu.

Now I tried every reasonable combination---at least I hope so---of the
root and the kernel line but it did not work. I'm at a loss ...

Doesn't work for me. Now---without changing the BIOS settings---I get
"Error 16: Inconsistent filesystem structure" or the boot device isn't
found. But the Debian installation still works fine, thus I exclude a
hardware defect.

[Bug 107951] Re: Booting fails after installation (GRUB error)

2007-04-30 Thread Christoph Bier
Yes, I did but it results in Error 25. But I just tried to boot with the
Debian HDD plugged in (I can choose a boot medium from a "Boot selection
popup menu" of my mainboard) and it worked! I don't know why especially
because the Debian HDD wasn't plugged in when I installed Ubuntu. But
even if it works this is no solution because the Debian HDD will not be
plugged in when I use the Ubuntu installation.

Ubuntu detects its drive as /dev/sdb if the Debian drive is plugged in.
But I still wonder why it is detected resp. mounted as a SCSI device.
It's an IDE drive---no SCSI, no S-ATA ...

What did you solve with the live CD? An installation using LVM on a ITE
8211 IDE controller?!

But you're are not using LVM because this is only supported by the
alternate cd. And the alternate cd lacks support for ITE 8211 based ide
controllers.

Sorry for not mentioning it! After a fresh installation of Dapper a swap
partition was created (and activated). Thus the problem seemed to be
solved in the Dapper installer.

[Bug 509652] Re: evince shrinks pages on printer

2010-01-24 Thread Christoph Bier
I attached a PDF and a screenshot of the Page Setup tab of the print
dialog. Scaling works (e. g. 120 percent) but there's still the same
offset on the left as with scale set to 100 percent. What's the Page
Handling tab of the print dialog?

[Bug 509652] Re: evince shrinks pages on printer

2010-01-24 Thread Christoph Bier
Print preview of Evince is attached (in front of Evince's main
window)---issue is visible. AR and Xpdf don't offer a print preview. But
you can print to a file from Evince and AR to see the difference. I'll
attach both files.

[Bug 509652] Re: evince shrinks pages on printer

2010-01-25 Thread Christoph Bier
Now I'm confused, too---I can't confirm your observation. Indeed evince-
print-preview.png doesn't match the mexp-evince-scaling-Evince.ps
according to the right and bottom margins (I overlooked those margins).
But it does not match mexp-evince-scaling-AR.ps! I didn't mix up the
files ... But forget about the both PostScript files I attached, they
just seem to confuse us. evince-print-preview.png shows everything: The
isssue is that Evince shrinks the page by adding margins all around. The
example PDF file mexp-evince-scaling.pdf has no margins at all. You can
see this in the background window (Evince's main window) in evince-
print-preview.png. How Evince prints this document (adding margins all
around) is shown in the foreground window (Evince's Print preview
window) in evince-print-preview.png.

Unfortunately AR doesn't offer a print preview and I have only a german
AR installation, so it doesn't make sense to attach a screenshot of the
page setup. I didn't chose any scaling option in AR (Xpdf doesn't know
such thing), they are disabled by default on my machines. But strictly
speaking it doesn't matter how AR or Xpdf print the file. Evince shrinks
it when it's not asked for. This is true for every PDF file I printed
with Evince since I upgrade to Karmic---mexp-evince-scaling.pdf is just
an example I created for this bug report.
