Installing the linux-modules-backports-intrepid package has been
reliable for me. I used these tips:

I would guess this should be assigned to 'gnome-sound-properties', as
changing settings there seems to have fixed the issue. As per Niels
comment above, changing the mixer settings to "ALSA" caused the sound to
work properly again.

fold...@home will never be directly packaged as it must be distributed
from stanford directly. Origami, as one of its options, will retrieve
and install it for you. This is likely the best we're going to get for
packaging and using fold...@home on ubuntu.

[Bug 338035] Re: Origami doesn't start automatically on startup in Jaunty

2009-03-24 Thread Christer Edwards
You can try two things to see if you have better success.

sudo update-rc.d origami defaults

sudo /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/installService

It sounds like, for whatever reason, the symbolic links weren't setup
properly between the /etc/init.d/origami and the runlevels. Either of
the above commands should populate those.

Please let me know if this problem persists.

[Bug 149602] [7.10 beta] creating a new panel in kubuntu requires a logout/login before customization is possible

2007-10-05 Thread Christer Edwards

In creating an additional panel within KDE I have found that I'm

keyboard layout. This prompted me with the usual key-pressing exercise.
The outcome of my input was recognized as "us", however my input

[Bug 148316] [6.06.1] netboot installer fails when using local cdrom-based repository

2007-10-02 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

I have been trying to setup a local network installer using PXE and
netboot. The PXE functions and the netboot installer loads fine. When
asked about the repository to use I've selected custom (first option),
entered the IP address of the server and pointed to the /ubuntu/ share
(which, again, is shared from /var/www/html/ubuntu).

The installer starts and then complains about not being able to find a
file needed. After looking at the log output on the client and server
it appears to be looking for:

"pool/main/l/linux-source-2.6.15/cdrom-core-
modules-2.6.15-26-386-di_2.6.15-26.47_i386.udeb"

however "cdrom-core-modules-2.6.15-26-386-di_2.6.15-26.46_i386.udeb" is
the file that exists on the CD.

NOTE THE .47 VS .46 IN THE FILE NAMES.

Does the 6.06.1 CD need to be updated to properly point to .46? I have
not been able to find where/why the installer feels it needs to look for
.47.

[Bug 220395] [NEW] [hardy RC] chfn unable to dlopen pam modules during installation

Public bug reported:

[Bug 220820] [NEW] [hardy RC] i386 installer can not reboot post-install on Dell Precision 490 N Series

2008-04-22 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I was doing some iso testing this evening for the final images prior to
release and I found that the i386 installer can not reboot post-
installation. It stalls at:

Sending SIGKILL to all processes.
Please standby while rebooting the system.
[foo.foo] SD2:0:0:0: [sda] synchronizing SCSI cache
[foo.foo] ACPI: PCI Interrupt for device :0C:02.0 Disabled
[foo.foo] Restarting System

The machine must be powered down manually to be restarted.

The amd64bit installer on the other hand (tested on the same hardware)
rebooted just fine with no issues.

This is on Dell Precision 490 N Series. See attached cpuinfo output.

'reboot=b' appended to the kernel does cause it to reboot as expected,
yes. So far I have only tried post-install and not during-install.

[Bug 210561] Re: Time zone changes on every boot

2008-04-08 Thread Christer Edwards
I have a similar issue, but I've changed my time with time-admin via the
system menu.

I travel quite a bit and I change my system time zone when I arrive in a
new location. The time updates promptly when I change it, but after a
reboot (ie; shutting down the laptop between the office and hotel) it
reverts to my original time zone.

[Bug 223735] [NEW] action on one display causes "noise" on the other display

2008-04-28 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I don't know if this is directly against gnome-display-properties or
perhaps its an xrandr bug, but I get "noise" on one display when using
applications on the other.

Example:
if I launch gnome-do on the lower display the shadow displays (and does not
remove) on the upper display.

if I have a full screen terminal open in both upper and lower, I get a
"noisy" line in the upper display.

[Bug 228360] [NEW] [hardy] intel driver not properly recognizing Canon RS02 projector

2008-05-08 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The following are my findings on testing the intel video driver (C2D
MacBook) in combination with the Canon RS02 Projector.

1) Power down the laptop, connect projector and reboot:
  - display is mirrored on the projector, although a bit off-center.
  - at gdm login load the projector complains it can no longer detect display.
  - post login attempting to mirror the display on projector fails (xrandr
--output VGA --auto, etc)
  - Screen Resolution tool does not detect projector

2) Power on laptop sans projector, plugin post login:
  - display is mirrored on projector, 1024x768 resolution (MacBook is 1280x800)
  - Screen Resolution tool does not detect projector (see attached screenshot)
  - Testing "upside down" rotation garbles projector display
  - Reverting to "normal" fixes garbled output.
  - Testing "left" rotation garbles projector (although not as bad)
  - Testing "right" rotation garbles projector to the same extent as "left"
  - "Detect Displays" makes projector flickr but no additional items are
reported in Screen Resolution tool.
  - Switching to "Clone Screens" within Screen Resolution tool and attempting
rotation garbles both displays.
  - Video playback (VLC) displays properly on projector, blue-screen within
player on MacBook
  - Video playback (MPlayer) displays properly on projector, black-screen
within player on MacBook

These tests were run using Ubuntu 8.04 "hardy" with -proposed enabled
(2.6.24-17-generic) and the xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13
driver.

[Bug 228747] [NEW] .bashrc test syntax different between user and root

2008-05-09 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

I will admit right off the bat that this is in no way a critical bug and
is likely submitted by my OCD behavior.

In running a diff -u comparing the ~/.bashrc with the /root/.bashrc I
notice that a test statement is handled, while accurately, using two
formats.

26c19
< if [ -z "$debian_chroot" ] && [ -r /etc/debian_chroot ]; then
---
> if [ -z "$debian_chroot" -a -r /etc/debian_chroot ]; then

While both are perfectly functional it just stood out to me as inconsistent.

[Bug 127798] file roller can't recognize second of duplicate files

2007-07-23 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

I have seen this issue in Feisty and previous releases. Here are steps
that should re-create the issue:

navigate to any web site offering a tar.gz or similar archive.
select "open with..." and open with file-roller
navigate through the file archive (optional)
close the window
select the file from the web again
select "open with..." and open with file-roller
archive is not able to open

reason I've found:
when a file is taken and opened vs saving to disk it is put into
/tmp/file.tar.gz. If the same file is selected from the web and opened using
the same method the file is called /tmp/file.tar.gz.1.

can file roller check for the existence of the same file in /tmp when
using the open with option? Would that be a feature/option to integrate
at the browser level or file-roller level? In any event, the best way
around that I've found is to delete both of the archives from /tmp and
try again, or manually open the original archive from /tmp.

[Bug 127801] apport "report a problem.." opens browser in new window vs tab

2007-07-23 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport-gtk

note: this may be a setting on my browser, but I have not been able to
change the default behaviour so far. This is also not a critical bug,
just a preference / feature notice / suggestion.

When I use the "report a problem with..." option within an application
the data is collected properly and the browser is launched to log into
launchpad. I notice LP is opened in a new window vs a new tab in the
existing instance of FF.

Is this a setting that I have in my browser or something to possible
fixed to better integrate to existing browser sessions?

[Bug 129109] [gutsy tribe 3] screen brightness meter randomly displays on macbook

2007-07-29 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

It seems a new feature in Gutsy automagically updates the brightness
levels on events such as lid close, battery-only, etc. Anytime I open
the lid on my C2D macbook the brightness returns to full (have not
tested to see if it returns to other 'custom' levels).

The problem is intermittent as the brightness display meter continues to
reappear for a few minutes into continued use.

The brightness hotkeys are supported on this hardware, it is simply a
cosmetic issue of the brightess meter continuing to pop up for a few
minutes after logging in, re-attaching the power, opening the lid, etc.

[Bug 129599] [gutsy tribe 3] Evolution preferences window too tall on 1280x800 resolution

2007-07-31 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When creating and editing accounts in Evolution (gutsy tribe 3) the
preferences window is too tall for a 1280x800 resolution, even when it
doesn't need to be. Attached is a screenshot of a window that does not
require the height, yet it's being used anyway.

[Bug 124779] virtualbox locks machine if kvm or kqemu modules are loaded

2007-07-08 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this should be reported under kvm, qemu or virtualbox so
I'll leave it generic for now.

In testing virtualization options on my C2D (macbook) I have tried kvm,
qemu and virtualbox. I found that if the kvm modules are still loaded
into memory (ie; kvm, kvm-intel or even the kqemu module) that
virtualbox will lock the machine. The only solution here is to hard
power-down the box and bring it back up again. I can duplicate this
issue by simply inserting one of those three modules (modprobe kvm, kvm-
intel or kqemu) and then starting virtualbox. Once I click "start" on
the virtualbox VM the machine locks.

When launching a virtualbox VM without any of those modules loaded the
system works fine.

Any other info needed please let me know.

[Bug 139661] [tribe 5] aptitude ncurses interface refers to su vs sudo in status bar notes

2007-09-14 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: aptitude

running the aptitude ncurses interface and selecting the "Become root"
option from the menu (ctrl-t for the menu listings) displays:

"run su to become root; this will restart the program, but your settings
will be preserved."

actually selecting that option presents the "[sudo] enter your password"

this "bug" is a bit obscure, but worth reporting either way.

[Bug 134315] clean.sh not executable by default [apt-mirror]

2007-08-23 Thread Christer Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-mirror

After running the apt-mirror command to reproduce a local repository

Run /var/spool/apt-mirror/var/clean.sh for this purpose"

This file does not have the execute bit set by default so a "chmod +x

applications.
