[Bug 66592] Bad use of dist-upgrade
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Yesterday, update-manager needed to "dist-upgrade" to upgrade all packages correctly. This is rather normal sometimes (not in production environments, though), but it is quite a common task. Update-manager presented a window saying "you need to upgrade the distribution" and then another window "upgrading to ubuntu 6.10". This is not incorrect, but for the non-techie user this is a problem. The user might think that the computer is upgrading to a NEW distribution, rather than just updating the current one (with a different apt commandline, but for the user this is not important) What I mean is that, though update-manager called apt with a dist- upgrade, it should be careful not to present the "distribution upgrade" window if the distribution isn't actually upgrading ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Bad use of dist-upgrade https://launchpad.net/bugs/66592 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 66609] Broken DVD disc leaves system unusable
Public bug reported: This is not (AFAIK) just an Ubuntu problem, but I had to blame somebody! ;) A few minutes ago I tried to copy a file from a DVD to the hard disk (nautilus drag-n-drop). The DVD was kind of scratched, so the transfer seemed to fail. The problem is, no message appeared, the DVD started to sound the typical noise when it's scratched (we all know it) and the remaining time for the copy began to raise. The system began to become unusable. I waited some minutes, but no luck. The DVD was spinning and making funny noises. Then I tried to eject by pressing the button, but no luck. After that, I pressed the "cancel" button, but it didn't cancel! It was just as if I hadn't clicked the button. Then nautilus kind of died, and I were unable to right-click on the desktop icon for the DVD, there were no icons at all. So with an unsable system, tried ctrl-alt-backspace to restart the X, but the keyboard didn't respond. Sysrq didn't work anyway. So the last resort was to press the reset button. Honestly I think that this shouldn't happen in a XXI century operating system. I had suffered from this since I remember (kernel 2.2 and very old redhats, problem with broken CDs), but apparently nobody fixed it. Sorry if this has nothing to do with Ubuntu, but I'm using ubuntu after all and I had to fill the bug report somewhere... ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Broken DVD disc leaves system unusable https://launchpad.net/bugs/66609 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 66094] Wrong battery levels
Public bug reported: Sorry not to give more information, I needed to report this bug because it's kind of critical and I hope it's easy to solve. I'm using gnome-power-manager since Dapper and it worked flawlessly. I upgraded to Edgy Knot 3 with the upgrade-manager, and many things broke, but all of them got solved but one. This one is the battery issue. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1692, and as I said before, the battery level report was correct in Dapper. Now, when I unplug the cable, g-p-m tells me that the battery level is critical (and it launches the default action to do when the battery level is critical). The thing is, the battery level isn't critical, it's just an error. I'm not quite sure where the error comes from. G-p-m measures it incorrectly, and so does the battery panel applet. Strangely enough, running an "acpi -t" on a console reports the *actual* remaining battery time. I'm thinking this might be a dbus issue, but I'm not sure, so I leave it as "I don't know". The bug is not critical but is a serious issue, because it can cause all laptops (after upgrading to Edgy) to shutdown or hivernate every time they are unplugged from the AC, not to mention that the user can't get the real remaining battery time If you need more info, please contact me ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Bug 63769 has been marked a duplicate of this bug -- Wrong battery levels https://launchpad.net/bugs/66094 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 121090] Evolution fails to download some gmail emails
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I'm not quite sure if this is a gmail or an evolution bug, so I've also reported it as a gmail bug, we'll see what happens. The thing is that sometimes (not reproducible) evolution fails to download some of the emails from gmail. The account is properly configured and there is no pattern for the "failed" emails, like sender, subject or anything. The messages still appear on gmail, but Evolution won't download them anymore. I've been some days wondering why Evolution wouldn't download some of the emails, and today I just gazed the message "failed to download message 2 of 8" in the download status window. Evolution had downloaded the first of all unread emails and then stopped, being unable to "catch up" or something and redownload them later. Maybe gmail thinks that the client has downloaded all messages properly and marks them as "downloaded"? I don't know, but the "failed to download message X of Y" also confuses me. I don't really know how to debug this, and it seems to be a protocol problem. [Bug 107719] When firefox is downloading a file, crashes and restarts the session, it deletes the previously downloaded file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox I must say that this has been really annoying. I was downloading a large file (the Feisty ISO, but that's not relevant) when firefox crashed because one of the Flash plugin bugs. I re-opened it, restored the session and the download manager trashed the data that I had already downloaded. It was 400 MB, an hour and a half downloading... The problem is that I was getting the file from a private mirror where I have to login in order to download anything. So, when firefox re-opened and tried to continue the download, it got a webpage saying "permission denied" and OVERWROTE the previous data, replacing it with the damn php file. So, to sum up, the bug is the following: When firefox crashes, if it is trying to resume a download, don't trash the downloaded data. If it can't resume for some reason (in this case, because it got a php file instead an ISO image), tell the user what to do, or make a backup of the current data and then restart the download. [Bug 107719] Re: When firefox is downloading a file, crashes and restarts the session, it deletes the previously downloaded file
I just tested it now with an AVI file, and it just ignored the avi.part file with data and re-started from the beginning, overwriting the .avi (which is empty). This time firefox didn't lose the previous data, so the user can rename the .avi.part to an .avi and then "wget -c" the previous download, but that's not the expected behaviour, I think. I've tried it on two sites that require HTTP authentication, and it never really resumes the previous file. When firefox crashes, I restart it and restore the session, the download manager starts to re-download the file. IMHO Firefox should either try to continue the download (saving the cookie from the download page that uses the HTTP authentication) or tell the user to login again on the page, click on the same file and then resume the download. [Bug 103365] Complete hang after a bluetooth device disconnects
Public bug reported: I can reproduce the bug, but I don't know how to help debugging it because the system hangs completely. I have a bluetooth phone (nokia 5200), and I access it via wammu and nautilus (gnome-obex-vfs). If I access it with wammu, the phone reports that it has been associated with the computer, and after closing wammu it successfully reports that it has been deassociated. But, when accessing the files with nautilus, the phone doesn't report that it's being associated with the computer. Nevertheless, if I disable bluetooth on it, a warning message appears, saying that "all the connected devices will be disconnected"; I suppose that it refers to the computer. Well, after disabling BT on the phone, after a few seconds, the computer completely hangs, and I have to reset. [Bug 87022] When an app prevents from umounting, tell the user which app it is
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager This is kind of "wishlist" bug, but very useful for a novice user. When there is a mounted drive (let's say, USB pendrive) and there is some app using it (let's say, a gnome-terminal cd'ed to /media/pendrive), if the user tries to umount it from Nautilus (right click -> umount), a window appears telling him/her that "An application is using the drive and it cannot be umounted". What I ask is that it would be very useful to internally run a "lsof /media/pendrive" (or whatever path) and tell the user which app is preventing the umount. For example, a message saying "Gnome-terminal is preventing the umount" tells the user which app he/she must close to complete the umount. [Bug 63343] unknown crash, crashes constantly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution-data-server It's kind of strange. I don't do anything, but evo-d-s crashes constantly and the bug-buddy window appears to report the crash. This is very annoying, besides the real problem (that's evo-d-s crashing) If I open evolution, it says that calendar, addresses and contacts can't be opened ** Affects: evolution-data-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- unknown crash, crashes constantly https://launchpad.net/bugs/63343 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
