yes, it is in 8.10. Im am now running Intrepid and had to patch and

[Bug 376495] [NEW] KDE logout takes far too long

2009-05-14 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

I now installed kubuntu with KDE4 on several computers, and I always
observed that loging out of KDE takes very long. Here on my laptop with
2x2GHz CPU and 4GB RAM (Kubuntu 9.04, KDE 4.2.3), it takes 34 seconds
from the moment when I click on "logout" to the moment when the kdm
login prompt appears. This was much faster in KDE 3.5.x. Same problem
when doing a regular shutdown, the logout from KDE takes longer than all
the rest of the shutdown. It is so bad that I now prefer to kill the KDE
by shutting down with "sudo halt". I don't think it was meant like
that...

There is no disk activity during this long logout phase, it seems KDE is
simply waiting for something, but for what? Did the devs maybe forget
some "sleep" commands in some scripts?

[Bug 272530] Re: 64-bit Intrepid automatic permanent reboot loop related to having exactly 4GB of memory

2009-05-24 Thread BongoMan
somehow something changed since the last kernel updates on jaunty. I now
have kernel 2.6.28-12-generic (from jaunty-proposed) and it still
reboots if I don't use the "mem=4096M" argument, but the reboot happens
a little bit later than before. I could narrow it down to the command
"/sbin/udevadm trigger" in /etc/init.d/udev. The reboot occurs while
this command is executed, just after the output of the string "loading
hardware drivers". I hope this helps a little...

[Bug 211747] Re: kdetv: bug in dcop function "navigate" from teletext interface

2009-05-27 Thread BongoMan
Hey, sometimes I don't understand how things work in Launchpad. This bug
is now older than one year, it has changed it's status twice and is now
marked as "new". What is new about that? It is a clear bug and I
provided an exact description and the solution. It is one line to change
in the sources. Why does someone package this for new distribution
releases (already 4 times since initial report) and does not correct the
bug before? It would take ~30 seconds. Sorry, I don't get that, what's
reporting bugs good for?

[Bug 350301] Re: Wireless network management module forces using kdewallet for storing wpa key

2009-04-18 Thread BongoMan
ok, finally this is not really a bug... I experienced a little with
kdewallet and I must say it rocks like most KDE stuff :) You can create
a wallet specifically for the wpa key and assign it an empty password.
It is also possible to choose to hide kdewallet from the system tray.
Doing this, it is like before, no password to enter and nothing to
confirm, the network applet simply connects automatically.

In the end, it is better than before, because you have the possibility
to make it more secure than before by having to enter a password, but
you must not. I think this bug can be closed.

There is a longer Call Trace before, but I cannot copy/paste it, because
the computer is frozen. Please ask if you need more infos.

I will try to reproduce the error this afternoon and redirect
stderr/stdout to a file and send the output here.

[Bug 325249] [NEW] false color of lines when using LaTeX package "color"

2009-02-04 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

When I use the package "color" in a LaTeX document, horizontal lines
(for example in tables or below the page header) are shown in yellow

a minimal example leading to this error:

[Bug 310355] [NEW] Samsung E152 ACPI problems

2008-12-21 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

Hello,

my notebook: Samsung E152 -Aura T5750 Eron, 4GB RAM
my OS: Kubuntu Intrepid

$ uname -r
2.6.27-9-generic

I have some trouble with acpi. Without special boot parameters, Intrepid will
not boot. With acpi=off it boots. I also found that it boots with ACPI using
the flag "mem=4096M" (don't understand why, but it works...). But when I use
this flag, the OS recognizes only 3 GB of my 4 GB RAM:

$ free -m
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 3012769 2242 0 12342
-/+ bufe Fn-Keysfers/cache:414 2597
Swap: 7906 0 7906

Also, most Fn keys don't work when ACPI is in use, but that is a known
bug...

Pascal

[Bug 128299] Re: avm fxusb_cz driver mod

2008-12-12 Thread BongoMan
Hi,

I could compile it in Intrepid to, but I had to do some more changes in
driver.c:

1) comment out or delete all lines containing the word "hotplug"
2) in line 1244 change "find_task_by_pid" to "find_task_by_vpid"

with this changes it compiles well and the module loads into the kernel,
but I don't know if it really works, can't test it here...

[Bug 128299] Re: avm fxusb_cz driver mod

2008-12-12 Thread BongoMan
Hi,

I just tried to compile kanos source-package
[url]http://www.kanotix.com/files/thorhammer/kanotix/non-free/avm/avm-
source_3.11-19_i386.deb[/url] (extracted with dpkg -x) on SuSE 11.0
(Kernel 2.6.25.18). I managed to compile fxusb_cz successfully, changing
only one thing in fxusb_cz/src/main.c (I know some purists would kill me
for that):

MODULE_LICENSE ("Proprietary");
to
MODULE_LICENSE ("GPL");

nb: that's very bad practice! I'm sure there are better solutions...

But with this change, I could do "make" and it compiled without errors.
I have no root privileges on this SuSE-PC, so I can't test if the module loads
without problems and if it works. Maybe you could test it Andreas?

[Bug 128299] Re: avm fxusb_cz driver mod

2008-12-12 Thread BongoMan
I forgot to mention one more change I had to make in the file driver.h:

#include

must be changed to:

#include

I was home for lunch and could test the module on Intrepid, it seems to
work well, I could establish an ISDN connection without problems using
bongosurfer (oh oh, a little bit surreptitious advertising ;) )

I made a diff with all the changes (see attachment). It can be applied in src/
with "patch -p1 < fxusb_cz-intrepid.patch"
I will try to update my old tutorial soon
(http://bongosurfer.forenking.com/viewtopic.php?t=560)

If someone knows a better solution for the MODULE_LICENSE thing, it
would be nice to post it here...

It would still be very nice and much easier if this module could be
included in the AVM restricted package!

[Bug 272530] Re: 64-bit Intrepid automatic permanent reboot loop related to having exactly 4GB of memory

2009-03-13 Thread BongoMan
Hi,

it's a pity, I had to ask a second time to get an answer from samsung,
and that is what they said:

Von unserer Seite aus werden nur 32-Bit Betriebssysteme ausgeliefert und nur
Treiber für 32-Bit Versionen
angeboten. Daher werden auch nur diese unterstützt. Uns ist kein Fehler in der
Speicheradressierung der
E152-Serie bekannt, weshalb auch nicht davon auszugehen ist, dass ein Bios
Update für dieses erscheinen
wird.

for those who don't understand german, they say they're only supporting
32 bit systems and that they don't believe that there is a bug in memory
management for the E152 series. I don't believe that, because I read at
some other place that even Vista 64-bit doesn't want to install on this
laptop. I liked samsung before, but that will be the last samsung thing
I bought

If samsung doesn't want to correct the bug, is there maybe a possibility
for a kernel-patch as a sort of workaround?

[Bug 344893] [NEW] no possibility to filter filetypes anymore

2009-03-18 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

I think this is a bug, because it was a very important feature, which
isn't available anymore in KDE 4.2: I miss the "filter" functionality,
which permits to show only files of a certain type. Why has this been
removed? ! And no, I don't like to use dolphin :)

[Bug 218395] [NEW] sound-problem: loud background noise

2008-04-16 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

Hi,

since I upgraded my kubuntu from gutsy to hardy, the sound system
behaves a bit strange. First for information:

Board: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 with nforce2
Sound: onboard
TV-CARD: Haupaugge WinTV PCI with line-out connected to line-in of the
sound-card

The situation is that whenever I stop artsd or it goes into suspend-mode
due to the -s flag, I hear a quite loud background noise coming out of
the speakers. It sounds like if I had turned the volume of the amplifier
to maximum, very nasty... When artsd is running, sound is ok.

The TV-Card connected to line-in is only part of the problem, if I
unplug it, the noise becomes a little bit less loud, but still much
louder than with artsd running. I never had such problems with feisty or
gutsy or debian-stable... Here some more information:

[Bug 211747] [NEW] kdetv: bug in dcop function "navigate" from teletext interface

2008-04-04 Thread BongoMan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdetv

Hello,

I'm running kubuntu 7.10 with kdetv 0.8.9-1 (you can find the sources
here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdetv/0.8.9-1)

The dcop function "TelexIface navigate(int page)" in kdetv doesn't
accept the argument "100", which is actually the most important page to
navigate to in teletext. I found the error in
kdetv/plugins/misc/telex/telex.cpp:

void Plugin::navigate( int page )
{
if ( page > 100 )
navigate( Page( page ) );
}

The if-condition should be: if ( page > 99 )

I attached a patch which changes the 100 to 99.

ciao,
Pascal Pollet

[Bug 366478] Re: Alcor Micro Corp. Multimedia Card Reader don't work in Ubuntu 9.04/9.10 (058f:6362 Device offlined)

2009-12-17 Thread BongoMan
it's me again :) For me the problem finally wasn't related to the card-
reader, but to the file system on the card (a 128 MB card from SanDisk,
formated with a NIKON digikam). There was a FAT16 filesystem on the
card, and like I said the card didn't get accepted in linux but in
vista. I reformated the card in vista using the built-in formatter
(management console), again with FAT16, and now the card works
flawlessly with Kubuntu Karmic.

I now also bought a new 16GB SanDisk SDHC-card, and this one worked at
once with its original formatting. For me this bug can be closed,
although there seems to be a problem with some FAT partitions which work
in vista and not with linux...

For the others who posted in this thread, please try your card-reader
again after having reformated your SD-card, maybe this bug isn't one
finally...

cheers,
Pascal

[Bug 289264] Re: Memory leak in update-notifier-kde

Note that after running "apt-get update", update-notifier-kde had high

I tested it with the latest knoppix, same problem... The card reader works
flawlessly with Vista... I hope there will be a solution for Linux soon, I
don't like having to boot Vista every time I want to access the pictures of my

[Bug 272530] Re: 64-bit Intrepid automatic permanent reboot loop related to having exactly 4GB of memory

2009-08-25 Thread BongoMan
I can just repeat what I said in my last message, it seems important to
me: If I modify /etc/init.d/udev around line 68 like this:

echo BEFORE
sleep 5

# Fix permissions and missing symlinks/programs for devices made in
# initramfs, and catch up on everything we missed
log_begin_msg "Loading hardware drivers..."
/sbin/udevadm trigger
if /sbin/udevadm settle; then
log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg $?
fi

echo AFTER
sleep 5

I can still see "BEFORE" appearing on the screen, but it will reboot
before "AFTER" appears. So the reboot occurs while execution of "
/sbin/udevadm trigger". Does anybody else observe this?

my kernel is now 2.6.28-15-generic on kubunty jaunty 64 bit.

[Bug 272530] Re: 64-bit Intrepid automatic permanent reboot loop related to having exactly 4GB of memory

2009-08-25 Thread BongoMan
sorry I must correct myself, actually the reboot occurs during execution of the
command
"/sbin/udevadm settle" just after the one I said before.

thus if I write:

echo BEFORE
sleep 5

# Fix permissions and missing symlinks/programs for devices made in
# initramfs, and catch up on everything we missed
log_begin_msg "Loading hardware drivers..."
/sbin/udevadm trigger

echo IN_BETWEEN
sleep 5

if /sbin/udevadm settle; then
log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg $?
fi

echo AFTER
sleep 5

I will see BEFORE and IN_BETWEEN, but not AFTER
