Public bug reported: Two internal CD-Devices are on my PC: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8525B (/dev/scd1) MITSUMI CD-ROM FX4830T!B (/dev/scd0) The Problem, i have, is, that CD-RW aren't correctly mounted. I cann't re-write. The CD-RWs are udf-format with nero on windows 2000 i beliefe. Following happens to a inserted CD-RW: 1. Insertation in the burner: My PC doesn't recognize the CD-RW. When i open it with nautilus i got following error message: Unable to mount the volume "cdrw5". Details: mount_point cannot contain the following characters: newline. G_DIR_SEPARATOR (usually /) Audio-CDs and Data-CDs are recognized by the CD-burner. And i can read CD-RWs. The CD-ROM-Device can read the CD-RW. After a short time an other error message was shown: "Cannot mount volume Unable to mount the volume "cdrw5" Details: mount: /dev/scd0 ist bereits eingehängt oder /media/cdrom0 wird gerade benutzt. mount: Laut mtab ist /dev/scd0 schon auf /media/cdrom0 eingehängt. (german Ubuntu version) Other strange behaviour: On the CD-Rom-Device i can play Audio-CDs with Rhythmbox. But Amarok can partially read the the audio-CD. And was stopped after a time. I got the CD back. Strange! Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Perhaps it is a xserver-xorg problem. 1. Live-CD: I can start the live-cd in vga-resolution-mode but not with higher resolution. I can get higher resolution (ubuntu shows 1600x). After restart the xserver with ctrl-alt-back leads to nothing. No chance to start ubuntu. 2. Upgraded to 7.10: it's easy to start ubuntu, but only with the 800x640 screen resolution with the vesa-driver. Changing to the matrox graphiccard is ok. But the monitor should stay as plug'n`play. Changing to LCD 1280x1024 is ok only in the failsafe-mode. If i try to start ubuntu in the gnome- or x-client-mode with the resolution of 1280x1024 i will get the following result. After the password input the screen changes to ubuntu-brown and then to black. After some seconds i will see the start screen again. i can repeat this strange procedure. (Strange) remark: The resolution of the start screen is 1280x1024. The graficcard is an agp (4x) one with one monitor. On the Intel i815 motherboard is a second onboard graficcard, unused and less solution. I suppose the bug is solved in my special case. The reason of the bug could be a time-out-problem. The communication between the xserver and the graphic card could be disturbed by other hardware. What did i do that the strange behaviour what i have reported stopped? I don`t know. I changed two files: 1. /etc/network/interfaces I stopped the most actions. May be i will allow eth0 to start inet dhcp. #auto lo #iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 #iface eth0 inet dhcp #auto eth2 #face eth2 inet dhcp # (ath0: Wlan-Interface) #auto ath0 #iface ath0 inet dhcp #auto wlan0 #iface wlan0 inet dhcp auto dsl-provider iface dsl-provider inet ppp provider dsl-provider pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf # iface ppp0 inet ppp #testweise ausgetragen # provider ppp0 # " # auto ppp0 # " 2. Otherwise i "tuned" the file /etc/hosts like this - the head of the file was changed to 127.0.0.1 localhost pcname 196.251.03.12 pcname - pcname is a place holder for the name of your computer. - 196.251.03.13 is a other place holder. You will get the correct adress by the command ifconfig in the terminal. Perhaps one of the changes above is the solution of my problem. Btw i removed with synaptic somes packages. [Bug 110489] [Gutsy] NEW Effect - corrupt graphics off with mga AGP450 Dualhead after upgrade - an idea
Now I have Gutsy Gibbon: No problem with the new kernel. This fault is solved i guess. But: === 1. I can only start Ubuntu in the safed mode with the 1280x1024 resolution. And: 2. No chance to get this resolution in the other modes (and the text- mode, trivial): In the x-client and the gnome mode i can´t use this resolution. I can work only in the vesa 800x600 mode. And the mga mil. AGP 450 Dualhead graphic card won´t acceppt. I guess i have a suspicion. My computer has a motherboard with the intel 815 chipset and an onboard-graphic-unit which i normally ignore. This is a second graphic card, a vga card! In my opinion the x server is strangely confused by the second onboard-card, which i forgot, until the system normally tries to go in the vga mode and ignores my AGP graphic card. I wished this information would help to solve the puzzle. Hi Bryce, disabling all modules and deleting the ' Section "DRI" ' leads to nothing: No start with the 2.6.20-Kernel. But as i deactivated the whole Module-section i had to start with strg- alt-f2 (or 2?). Ubuntu didn't start in the grafic mode. Therefore i copied the backup-file to xorg.conf. I dislike such experiences because i'm not a linux or unix expert. The stepwise deactivation of the two modules, what you suggested, shows no effect. Now i tried a Live-CD with U 7.10 Tribe 5: Surprise. I could start the Live-CD. But only the safe graphics mode leads to a correct desktop. The VEGA mode shows a grey screen with one small window. Otherwise my PC doesn't load Ubuntu with the other graphic modes. I suppose this behaviour is caused by my old pc with a matrox millenium G450 AGP Dualhead graphic card (32 Mb SDRAM). I guess there isn't installed a driver for this card. After the download in the tmp-directory was finished i copied the video to an other directory. I can watch the video with the totem player. But i can't jump to any position by changing the cursor-position in the seek bar. And inserting a time (in seconds) by selecting the goto-command (menu) leads to the same result. I can only restart the video - no crash. Other flash videos show the same behaviour. I use ubuntu 7.04 with the older linux image 2.6.17-11 generic kernel (btw. i can not start ubuntu with the 2.6.20-15 or with the 20-16 generic kernel).
