[Bug 259157] Re: [MASTER 0.7 regression] atheros/madwifi and orinoco drivers not supported

2008-10-07 Thread Bastanteroma
The Hardware Drivers applet recognizes that my eee 900a has an atheros
driver, and claims that it's activated, but network manager doesn't see
any devices.

In Network Tools there is an unknown device, wmaster0.

Hope there's some signal in my added noise.

[Bug 390222] Re: Google Chrome-like tabs

2009-07-31 Thread Bastanteroma
I think that there is a misunderstanding here. Chrome does put the tabs

eliminates the menu bar.) So I'm confirming this.

There seems to be discussion of this in relation to the switch from Metacity to

[Bug 64628] Resume is incomplete around 1/5th of the time.

2006-10-07 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

On the two computers on which I've installed Ubuntu and it successfully
suspends it every so often, according to no pattern I can discern,
resumes incompletely. The desktop comes up, sound and the mouse work.
But firefox is just about the only program that will load (allowing me
to post this bug). The terminal, the logout menu, any preference or
administration dialog - nothing follows the launch feedback. Then 10 or
20 minutes later all the things I've tried to load suddenly appear.

This is on a new dell e310 desktop with integrated intel graphics and an
older sony vaio desktop with an nvidia card using the nv driver on a
wired network with a pretty much standard install of dapper and then
edgy as of october 5 (suspend didn't even work at all on the sony in
dapper, so kudos). Beagle is the only background service I'm aware of
initiating, but stopping it either reduced the frequency of this problem
or had no effect, it's hard to say.

This is my first bug, so please let me know if I can provide more info,
or if this an inappropriate posting.

[Bug 146533] Suspend/resume regression in Gutsy

2007-09-28 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-12-generic

Fresh install of Gutsy beta on a hp laptop on which Edgy suspended and
resumed fine. Not sure about Feisty. With both the nv and nvidia
driver, with NvAGP enabled and disabled, and with various combinations
of options in /etc/default/acpi-support, the laptop invariably seems to
suspend successfully, the lights go blinky, it looks like it does when
it suspended in Edgy or Windows. When I try to resume the fans turn on,
the lights light, the screen flashes black, but there is a loud pop as
the mute icon goes from blue (on) to red (off), the wireless card light
stays red, and there is no image on the screen and I can't switch to a
virtual terminal.

[Bug 135441] Re: random unfixable freezes in gutsy herd 5 (kernel panic?)

2007-09-08 Thread Bastanteroma
Tried using the ralink card again today, Sept. 8, and I haven't gotten a
freeze up yet. I did try to suspend, and got this message over and over
again in the terminal, every ten seconds or so:

Message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] at Sat Sep 8 13:34:22 2007 ...

I couldn't suspend or shut down or log off, so I had to force a hard

[Bug 140022] (Gutsy)Network Manager silently drops connections with USB wifi adapter using zd1211rw driver

2007-09-16 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Occasionally Firefox will fail to load a page even though the Network
Manager icon displays a strong connection. When I reselect the network
that I'm supposedly already connected to the spinning connecting icon
will appear, only to be replaced by the x marked disconnected icon. To
reconnect I have to click on the network again. This is with an
unsecured network.

As of today, Sept. 18, when the network dies I can't restart it. NM
keeps displaying the bar graph even after I uncheck wireless and
networking in the context menu.

[Bug 135441] random unfixable freezes in gutsy herd 5 (kernel panic?)

2007-08-28 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Since installing herd 5 on a pc which functions perfectly under Feisty,
I get lockups randomly, sometimes after using the computer for a long
time, other times just after logging in. There is a hardware difference
of a sort in that the ralink wifi card didn't work in Feisty and now it
does, so I'm using it.

Don't know what to attach, but I'm pasting lspci here before it freezes
again.

[Bug 135441] Re: random unfixable freezes in gutsy herd 5 (kernel panic?)

2007-08-28 Thread Bastanteroma
I pulled the ralink card, and the freezes seem to have stopped, and I
can now successfully suspend/resume (before nothing happened, and when I
shut down instead, the computer did not quite finish turning off,
leaving a network manager error related to the wireless card). Of
course, now I can't access the internet on this computer either...

[Bug 136296] Semi-failed suspend generated error and a system tray icon called "suspend, " killed networking and eliminated hibernate option.

2007-08-30 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Normally this computer suspends and resumes perfectly, but a bad suspend
under Gutsy generated a popup saying that the computer had failed to
suspend. I chose to not get future messages, since everything appeared
fine. Then I noticed an icon in the system tray named suspend. I right
clicked and tried to open the preferences but nothing loaded. Then I
noticed that the network wasn't reconnecting. The interface was missing
from both Network Manager and the Network configuration applet. Since
then I haven't had the option of hibernating offered in the shutdown
menu.

[Bug 108376] Compiz is choppier than Beryl, lags switching windows

2007-04-20 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

On one of my computers, compiz is slower and jerkier than Beryl - the
scale effect can be quite bad looking and there is often a hesitation
when switching maximized windows by clicking on the panel. The computer
is a P-IV with half a gig of ram and a Nvidia Geforce 6200, so it seems
like it should work fine with both.

My hope is that whatever wm emerges out of the reunion will behave more
like Beryl than Compiz on this computer, but I couldn't find a place to
report this at the Compiz site.

[Bug 108376] Re: Compiz is choppier than Beryl, lags switching windows

2007-04-22 Thread Bastanteroma
I set this up before the restricted manager, following a stickied howto
at the forums, which had me add this to my xorg.conf: Option
"AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True".

The difference between window managers is fairly slight. Compiz is just
a little snaggier. The hesitation when switching windows is a fraction
of a second, but it disappears with Beryl.

[Bug 86797] Re: No beryl or compiz working after updates!!!

2007-02-23 Thread Bastanteroma
I can confirm that a few days ago compiz stopped working - on a fresh
install with an nvidia card, enabling desktop effects makes the already
present windows go wobbly, but no new windows can appear, including the
one counting down before reverting to Metacity. If I minimize a window
it disappears, but I can't restore it. Clicking on the panel menus or
hovering for a tool tip does nothing. Still true after updating compiz
again today, 2/23.

[Bug 88753] Feisty: Mouse to the corner can either close maximized window or trigger compiz event, but not both.

2007-02-28 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

My desktop is configured like opensuse with one panel on the bottom.
With compiz running, I can't click on the upper right corner of the
screen to close a maximized window. But I can mouse to the upper left
corner to trigger the "scale" compiz plugin. Last night I was adjusting
the speed of the scale effect when I noticed that I could no longer
trigger it over a maximized window, instead I was getting the window
menu tool tip. But in exchange, I could click on the upper right corner
to close a maximized window. Since rebooting, the earlier behavior has
returned. It may be that I've never noticed this trade off before, but
it seems like a drag.

[Bug 85390] Re: [feisty] Can no longer import photos from my Canon PowerShot A520

2007-03-05 Thread Bastanteroma
Had a similar problem with a friend's canon - inserted usb cable,
clicked "yes, import," and nothing happened. Went into fspot and tried
to do an import. The camera showed up, but I got an error message when
I tried to import. Then when I went back to try again it worked. But
the next day after a similar series of events when I went back to try
the fspot import again the camera didn't show up in the list, but popped
up the initial Gnome "camera detected - what do you want to do" dialog.
Tried again with the same result.

On an edgy computer the initial gnome import method works fine.

Vague and verbose, I know. But I don't have the computers or camera
handy.

[Bug 83095] Re: Suspend broken on upgrade to Feisty 2/03 with Sony Vaio PCV-RX850 Desktop

[Bug 96705] Unclear language about Automatic Updates in Software Sources

2007-03-26 Thread Bastanteroma
Public bug reported:

In Feisty the options for automatic updates in the Software Sources
window are unclear.

Currently they are:

-Install security updates without confirmation.
-Download all updates in the background
-Only Notify about updates

Which leads to the obvious, and I imagine wrong-headed, question - What
if I want to install security updates without confirmation and download
all updates in the background?

I can infer that the security policy goes from most automated to least,
and so that if I'm installing security updates I'm also downloading the
rest. But why not spell it a little more clearly? I remember the old
language seemed good but this is the best I can do, ordered from least
automated to most:

Notify about available updates and ask for permission to install.
 but don't install any.
Download all updates in the background and install security updates without
confirmation.

If that is too long, I think this might be explicit enough, though still
potentially ambiguous.

Only notify about available updates.
Download all updates in the background.
Download all updates in the background and install security updates without
confirmation.

[Bug 82806] Re: With compiz running in feisty, text doesn't display in Run Application dialog

2007-02-18 Thread Bastanteroma
I've noticed that the behavior I noticed may be just one form of a more
general problem. On this computer, running Feisty with Compiz, dialogs
and menus show up blank. Example dialogs include "add printer" and
openoffice "save as". In openoffice there are seemingly similar
problems - highlighting on mouseover doesn't work in the menus, and when
I first click on a menu often only a few of the entries show; I have to
click again to get the whole menu. This computer has integrated intel
graphics. On another computer with the same software using an nvidia
card I don't have any of these problems.

I looked for a more general bug report that this might duplicate but
couldn't find one. Should I write these things up as a new bug report?

Just tried suspend to disk, and the computer turns off, after displaying
a bunch of messages about usb devices (which I'd be happy to write down

same error messages, then some garbage (white horizontal line), before
finally leaving the cursor over a black screen. The cursor is in the
lower right quadrant of the screen, just like it is in the Herd 4 live
cd on shutdown, visible over the usplash. I tried ctrl-alt-backspace

Suspend to ram, which is what I tried initially, still doesn't turn off the
computer. Suspend to disk turns off the computer, but resume fails at a blank
screen with a frozen cursor.

[Bug 85829] Re: checkboxes not visible in theme

This happened to me in xfce using the xfce 4.2 theme while editing the
session panel from the xfce control panel. Maybe related?
