[Bug 1752386] [NEW] here-document tabulations turn into single dots even when <<-EOF is used
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 16.04 with GNU bash, version 4.3.48(1)-release (x86_64-pc- linux-gnu), both in DigitalOcean droplets and Linode VPSs, I encounter the following problem: here-document tabulations turn into single dots even when <<-EOF is used. A Linode engineer replicated this in Ubuntu 14.04 and 17.04 as well. It happens when I SSH with various SSH clients from Windows 10 (Putty, MobaXterm, etc). It is likely a bug in Ubuntu Bash: Here you can find a detailed, markdowned description with steps to reproduce: https://serverfault.com/questions/898964/copy-paste-into-digitalocean- modified-ubuntu-bash-includes-dots-instead-tabulati ** Affects: bash (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752386 Title: here-document tabulations turn into single dots even when <<-EOF is used To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/1752386/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 297707] Re: DHCP feature for network-manager-openvpn with TAP required
I agree with this ... I have to run `sudo openvpn client.conf &` and then do a Ctrl+D whenever I want to make a VPN connection to my Tomato OpenVPN server. The network-manager-openvpn package does not allow me to receive a DHCP address from dnsmasq running from the OpenVPN server. It is also not feasible to set a static IP either (with the default gateway being the tap* device). I need an ifconfig statement in my client.conf file and openvpn must be run from the terminal, as mentioned above. Thomas, your solution with putting "domain\username" in the user field works, thank you! However, your very last suggestion above does not seem to work for me. There are no ooo*.desktop files in /usr/share/applications. This may be because I just performed the following: sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org* and installed the new OOo 3.0 .deb's from the OpenOffice.org website. Kjell Braden, I disagree. This problem is very troublesome; I am unable to access any Word-created documents or Excel-created spreadsheets hosted on a Windows XP share from my laptop running OpenOffice+Ubuntu. I cannot exactly just "work around" by typing in the password because the domain name is locked, and it does not match the domain that I am working in. Thus, I have to download the file onto my desktop, modify it, and upload it again - every time I want to make a change. [Bug 122993] Re: ondemand governor does not use maximum frequence under load
I don't think this is a problem with cpufreqd, but rather with the cpufreq kernel modules that control frequency scaling. I can confirm getting this bug with a freshly installed fully updated version of the 64-bit version of ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy). I experienced the same problem with the ondemand scaling governor controlled by powernowd where each core of my Intel Pentium dual core E2200 didn't budge from 1.20 GHz under 100% load (monitored via $ cat /proc/cpuinfo). Uname output shows: 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux I'm not sure which cpufreq module is affected. The output of $ lsmod |grep cpufreq is: acpi_cpufreq 10632 0 cpufreq_ondemand 10896 0 cpufreq_userspace 6048 0 cpufreq_powersave 3072 0 cpufreq_conservative 9608 0 cpufreq_stats 8160 0 freq_table 6464 3 acpi_cpufreq,cpufreq_ondemand,cpufreq_stats processor 36232 2 acpi_cpufreq,thermal Installing cpudyn instead of powernowd just gives me error messages stating frequency scaling is unsupported.for my processor I worked around the problem by making the following changes to /etc/init.d/powernowd changed "use_ondemand" to "use_performance" changed "echo -n ondemand >$x/cpufreq/scaling_governor;" to "echo -n performance >$x/cpufreq/scaling_governor;" changed "if use_ondemand" to "if use_performance" then issuing $ sudo /etc/init.d/powernowd restart making the changes take effect now and with every reboot. This has the effect of loading the performance governor instead, which correctly uses the maximum stock frequency of my processor, and avoids annoying error messages. But it still means the ondemand governor is broken. Since this appears to be the default governor, users experiencing this bug are effectively unable to use most of their processor's computing ability, silently hampering all cpu-bound tasks. Can someone up the importance of this bug accordingly? ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: cpufreqd => linux-source-2.6.22 Status: New => Confirmed -- ondemand governor does not use maximum frequence under load https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122993 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 122993] Re: ondemand governor does not use maximum frequency under load
I've done more testing and found that what I've been experiencing may or may not be replicating this bug. I was loading the processor using Prime95 (available at http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm) to test each core under load. The reasons the ondemand cpu frequency governor was not ramping up the multiplier while running this software's torture test (which should completely load the cores) had to do with the default gconf cpu frequency power settings. I needed to change the settings to inform gnome to consider niced processors in the processor load calcuation. Under the default settings, the niced processes were not considered as part of the load, and the cpu multiplier stayed at idle. I was able to use gconf-edit to find this buried setting. Once niced processes were included in the load calculation, the multiplier increased appropriately. I missed these settings before because I did not find them under either System > Preferences > Power Management or in the preferences for the cpu governing applet. I was able to find them by running gconf-edit, then browsing to apps > gnome-power-manager > cpufreq I find there the following important power management settings: consider nice "Whether or not niced processes should be considered on processor load calculation" performance_ac "The cpufreq performance value used to scale the processor when on AC power." performance_battery "The cpufreq performance value used to scale the processor when on battery power." policy_ac The cpufreq policy used to scale the processor when on AC power. Possible values are ondemand, conservative, powersave, userspace, performance, nothing. policy_battery "The cpufreq policy used to scale the processor when on battery power. Possible values are ondemand, conservative, powersave, userspace, performance, nothing." Two questions to consider. Should the consider_nice variable be checked by default to help niced CPU intensive processes use all available processing? Contributors to distributed computing projects, such as the Mersenne Prime project, video transcoding software, etc, I think would benefit from a more sensible default. Even if the default options aren't changed, shouldn't these options appear in the preferences for Power Management, the cpu frequency scaling applet, or some other more easily accessible location? If I have missed where these settings are otherwise located, please let me know. But if I haven't, I think these settings should be easier to find, especially for laptop users. Finally, I do not know if the original user who submitted this bug was mislead as I was, so the original problem may well be different. [Bug 1686687] [NEW] fstrim destroying XFS on SAN
Public bug reported: We observed severe data loss/filesystem corruption when executing fstrim on a filesystem hosted on an Eternus DX600 S3 system. There is multipathing via a fibre channel fabrics but the issue could be reproduced when disabling multipathing and using one of the block devices directly. It could not be reproduced when creating a multipathing device via dmsetup with four paths pointing to four loop devices mapping the same file. The observed behavior is that XFS cannot read vital filesystem metadata as the underlying storage device returns blocks of 0x00. The blocks are discarded via UNMAP commands and since thin provisioning is used, the SAN deallocates them and returns 0x00 on subsequent reads. Invoking find yields error messages like "find: ./dir_16: Structure needs cleaning". In other tests, where more data had been written, files were accessible but checksums did no longer match. In consequence, the XFS filesystem is in an unusable state and has to be created freshly, equaling complete data loss. Trying to repair the filesystem had proven not to be worth it as backups were available and trust had already been compromised. The problem was discovered after installing a new storage server with ubuntu 16.04, intending to replace the current machine running 14.04. Every weekend, the test volumes were corrupted. Investigation pointed towards Sunday, 06:47, which is the time `cron.weekly` is run. The job file `/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim` seemed most likely, so `fstrim -a` was run manually after `mkfs.xfs` and the filesystem became damaged. The damage only became apparent after a `umount` `mount` cycle, when all buffers were flushed and data was re-read from the device. We now could use config management to install a cronjob that (every minute!) checks for /sbin/fstrim and renames it, if present. This would be extremely unsatisfactory as it is a brittle workaround. So for now, we are locked on ubuntu 14.04. Since util-linux is one of the most central packages, there is no way to not have fstrim or the cronjob on a ubuntu system. I have attached a script used to reproduce the bug reliably on our system and its log output, as well as excerpts from syslog and md5sum. ** Affects: util-linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "bug_report_fstrim.7z" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1686687/+attachment/4868599/+files/bug_report_fstrim.7z -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1686687 Title: fstrim destroying XFS on SAN To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1686687/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1686687] Re: fstrim destroying XFS on SAN
For us, fstrim was the frontend to the bug and running it consistently damaged our filesystems. That is why util-linux was chosen as the affected package. Also removing the cron file will not be sufficient as any update to the package (using cron-apt) might re-install it. Maybe a conflicting change would be a better choice. Still seems to brittle in light of such severe consequences. Mitigated by not upgrading to 16.04 for now. Since the system concerned is not connected to the web, Apport as described here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport#Tools) will not work. Also, Ubuntu server did not install apport when selecting 'Basic Ubuntu Server' in the installer. If there is additional information that might be useful, let us know. [Bug 1315360] Re: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only
Ok, the solution here for me was to update to the latest kernel headers/image (4.4 at this time) using some instructions something like this: wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc3-wily/linux- headers-4.4.0-040400rc3_4.4.0-040400rc3.201511300321_all.deb wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc3-wily/linux- headers-4.4.0-040400rc3-generic_4.4.0-040400rc3.201511300321_i386.deb wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc3-wily/linux- image-4.4.0-040400rc3-generic_4.4.0-040400rc3.201511300321_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.4*.deb linux-image-4.4*.deb The latest linux kernel will detect the mousepad ok on the next boot, however, it doesn't include the keyboard drivers on boot to unlock the encrypted hard-drive at startup. You can bypass this by plugging in an old clickety-clackety usb keyboard and typing in the password there. To get around that permanently, alter the file: /etc/initramfs-tools/modules add these lines at the end of the file for some better boot-up keyboard/s driver support: hid hid-rmi hid-generic ohci_pci usbhid you may also try these lines for other keyboard support on various related devices: hid_logitech hid_logitech_dj hid-logitech-hidpp hid_microsoft hid_apple mac_hid as noted here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs- tools/+bug/1238194 specifically, I believe hid-rmi was the one the Razer Blade 14" wanted for keyboard support at boot HD encryption unlock time. You may also find you need the "touchpad fix" ala Alex Cabal, here: https://alexcabal.com/get-a-working-touchpad-on-a-14-razer-blade- running-linuxubuntu/ which includes the commands: synclient ClickPad=0 synclient PalmDetect=1 and adding a file to the system: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-synaptics-options.conf containing the lines: Section "InputClass" Identifier "touchpad catchall" Driver "synaptics" MatchIsTouchpad "on" MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" Option "PalmDetect" "1" Option "ClickPad" "0" EndSection -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1315360 Title: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315360/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1205397] Re: encrypted install fails because unsafe swap (zram) is detected
(No idea if posting to the right place, hopefully someone, somewhere out there gets some use out of this. It's far too rare for me to go back and actually post solutions to problems I had and fixed..) I had the same problem, there's definitely something wrong with the installer (I was trying to set up 14.04 with encrypted partitions on different drives, with / on my small SSD and /home /usr /tmp /var and swap on my HDD). But I played around with it, restarted the installer/rebooted a number of times, and here's how you work around it: It's the ordering. It can't cope with setting swap as an encrypted partition and then creating another partition after that. So, set up all your actual partitions, including your encrypted containers first. I believe it necessary to include an encrypted partition for swap, so make sure to make one of suitable size for it. Don't know if relevant, but I happened to pick all logical partitions and that worked. Once you have them all set up, THEN, and only then pin them to actual mount points (setting this straight away will result in a crash). I started with swap and then moved on to /home and so on. Now you have your encrypted partitions, and you don't have to forgo swap with swapoff! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1205397 Title: encrypted install fails because unsafe swap (zram) is detected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1205397/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 353904] Re: Seamonkey update disables enigmail
This is the case for the moment on Natty, but maybe not on Oneiric where SeaMonkey and Thunderbird currently are in sync. The problem is that the Enigmail package is different for different versions of SeaMonkey and Thunderbird, so the three packages SeaMonkey, Thunderbird and Enigmail need to be updated at the same time, or Enigmail will become disabled in at least one of the e-mail clients. [Bug 878910] [NEW] log in hangs
Public bug reported: Sorry about my name. Of course my name is not Anonymous, it's just a disguise i guess. But that being said, here's the bug description: I have 3 user accounts. Ubuntu 11.10, recently upgraded from 11.04. There are two different ways i can reproduce this error. See A) and B) below. A) I start computer, everything goes fine. Log in in user account. After log in, i click the menu-item "switch user account" Then i log in to the same user account --> Display says "No input signal" / black screen/ computer seems to hang. or B) I start computer, everything goes fine. Log in in user account 1. ( out of the three i have ). By clicking on another user account in the right-upper corner, i log in to user account 2. I'm now successfully logged in in two accounts. By clicking on account 1, i go back to account 1. I click "Log out" in the menu. I fill in the password for account 2, enter, and same error ( hangs + no display signal ). So, apparently the bug occurs when trying to log in on an account that's already open in the background. In 11.04, this was not a problem. It just logged in to the account that was still "somewhere there". Well, that's all folks. You can always let me know, i offer to test if things are solved...
