[Bug 1812892] Re: Use high ram memory by the gnome-shell-extension-gsconnect

2021-02-23 Thread Andrew Piziali
When I enable GSConnect version 28 (as reported by GSConnect > About) in
Tweaks > Extensions > GSConnect, after a while my Ubuntu 18.04 system
becomes unresponsive, with the disk activity light solidly on. With it
disabled, the system never becomes unresponsive.

2020-12-04 Thread Andrew Piziali
This bug report documents an incompatibility between the version of
Thunderbird distributed with Ubuntu 18.04 and the version of VLC. One or
the other must be changed so that a video attachment opened by
Thunderbird is accessible to the user's default video player, VLC.

[Bug 1897460] [NEW] VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird

2020-09-27 Thread Andrew Piziali
Public bug reported:

When I changed my default video player from Totem to VLC, Thunderbird
was no longer able to play an email message video attachment. By
default, Ubuntu Software installs the VLC snap package, whose permission
scheme prohibits it from accessing the directory where Thunderbird saves
the video file to be played (/tmp/mozilla_andy0). VLC reports:

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///tmp/mozilla_andy0/[VIDEO FILENAME]'.
Check the log for details.

To reproduce the bug:
1. Open a Thunderbird message.

2. Single left click on an attached video file handled by VLC.

3. VLC starts and then opens an error dialog with the above "Your input
can't be opened" message.

[Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird

2020-09-28 Thread Andrew Piziali
Sebastien, this is not so much a snapd issue as it is an Ubuntu 18.04
issue. The Ubuntu Software application should not offer to install a
video player application that does not play with the its Thunderbird
application. Hence, I changed the bug target package to "software-
center."

[Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird

2020-10-04 Thread Andrew Piziali
Matthew, thank you for properly identifying the responsible component of
Ubuntu 18.04 that prevents Thunderbird and VLC from interoperating.
"gnome-software" is more precise.

This is not a Thunderbird, VLC or snapd problem. This is an Ubuntu 18.04
application packaging issue. The problem is that Thunderbird saves a
temporary attachment file in /tmp before invoking a helper application
to open it. If the helper application associated with the file is VLC,
VLC does not have permission to open the file. (In fact, the system /tmp
directory is not even in the VLC snap's filesystem name space.)

The solution is to build and configuration VLC for this Ubuntu release
so that it shares its /tmp directory with the system /tmp directory,
i.e. they are one and the same.

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-11-27 Thread Andrew Piziali
When the system hung this afternoon, I was able to recover control by
killing the X server with a QUIT signal (3). However, when I logged back
in from the display manager (LightDM), the color palette was messed up.
Logging out and back did not resolve the problem. I finally power cycled
the machine and all was well again.

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-11-07 Thread Andrew Piziali
Running 3.2.0-55-generic, my system again hung this morning but the
evidence is increasingly pointing to either the X server (Xorg) or the
video device driver as the culprit.

As earlier, the keyboard became non-responsive (except the kernel magic
keys) and the mouse nearly non-responsive, the mouse cursor moving in
hesitant steps as the mouse was moved. I logged into the system from
another machine on the LAN to examine the running processes. avconv was
converting a video file (68% CPU), kworker/1:0 was consuming 62%, and
Xorg 52% on this Intel Core2 T5500 dual core mobile CPU. Suspecting the
X server from earlier observations, I examined its log file
(/var/log/Xorg.0.log):

[Bug 1221827] [NEW] HUD Shortcut to Thunderbird Menu Item Disables Text Alignment Menu

2013-09-06 Thread Andrew Piziali
Public bug reported:

If the Unity HUD is used while composing a new Thunderbird HTML email
message to insert a horizontal line, a subsequent attempt to use the
text alignment menu fails. Clicking the toolbar button has no effect
thereafter.

To reproduce this failure:

1. Start Thunderbird.

2. Click "Create a new message" toolbar button to open the HTML message
composition window.

3. Enter some text in the message body.

4. Select the text.

5. Click the text alignment menu button and choose "Center."

6. Tap the left key to bring up the HUD.

7. Enter the three letters "h", "o", "r".

8. "Insert > Horizontal Line" becomes the selected default choice.

9. Press .

10. Re-select the text entered in step 3 above.

11. Click the text alignment menu button. The menu will no longer
display.

[Bug 1221827] Re: HUD Shortcut to Thunderbird Menu Item Disables Text Alignment Menu

2013-09-09 Thread Andrew Piziali
Okay, this appears to be a more general Unity HUD bug because the same
failure (HUD access to application menu prevents subsequent menu use)
occurs for both Thunderbird and Firefox. If the HUD is used to access,
for example, Firefox Edit -> Preferences, the pull-down menus of the
Edit -> Preferences tabs are subsequently inoperative.

[Bug 1223055] [NEW] System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-09-09 Thread Andrew Piziali
Public bug reported:

Once or twice a week, the system becomes non-responsive, with the mouse
cursor tracking mouse movement but no keyboard response. Until today I
would resort to using the kernel magic keys to reboot the system
(R-E-I-S-U-B). Today I remotely logged in from another machine on the
LAN and discovered that not only was the kernel alive and all processes
running, but that the "migration/0" and "migration/1" processes were
consuming 50% of the CPU each, as reported by top(1). I suspect this is
why the system becomes non-responsive.

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-09-09 Thread Andrew Piziali
Joseph, to answer your question regarding when the issue appeared, it
has been something I have tolerated for a long time (> 6 mo) so it
probably appeared after an Ubuntu update, but I cannot pinpoint which
one.

Regarding testing the latest upstream kernel, yes, I believe I can test
v3.11 but we'll need to allow one or two weeks of daily system use to
see if the migration/[01] process issue is resolved. I'll keep you
posted.

Thanks.

I booted the 3.12rc kernel but discovered that All Settings -> Sound no
longer recognizes my two attached USB headsets. It only reports the
motherboard sound card (Thinkpad T60). These are the /var/log/syslog
messages from attaching one of the headsets:

Perhaps the "`-2' invalid for parameter" is the cause. Therefore, in
order to use my headsets, I rebooted back to the stock 3.2.0-52 kernel.

Next?

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-10-24 Thread Andrew Piziali
The 3.12 kernel hung this morning, as in earlier instances. These are a
few observations from a remote login (ssh) from another system on the
LAN:

* No process was consuming an inordinate amount of CPU, unlike previous
migration/0 and migration/1 processes
* No process or thread was doing any significant I/O
* When Alt-SysReq-K was pressed on the hung system, no response was observed. I
expected all processes on the X server's virtual console to be killed.
* After a "shutdown -r -t10 now" was executed from the remote login, ps(1)
revealed that the X server was in WCHAN "exit" and its STATUS was "Ds." The
system did not reboot.
* Alt-SysReq-R, I, E, S, U, B rebooted the system

I am now running 3.2.0-55-generic until I receive further diagnosis
instructions.

Running kernel 3.0.0-0300-generic this morning, the system hung like
before: kworker/0 and kworker/1 processes each consuming about 15%, Xorg
35%. The Xorg process would not respond to signals 1, 15 or 9. I
resorted to the magic key sequence R-E-I-S-U-B to reboot, running the
current stock kernel, 3.2.0-55-generic.

2013-09-25 Thread Andrew Piziali
I am following up on my 9/18/13 and 9/22/13 question. It is safe to run
the 3.12rc kernel even though the installation reported many missing
firmware warnings? The first few warnings from the installation log I
posted above are:

W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/radeon/CYPRESS_smc.bin for module
radeon
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/radeon/JUNIPER_smc.bin for module
radeon
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/radeon/REDWOOD_smc.bin for module

...

Thank you.

I recovered from a system hang this morning with a "kill -SIGQUIT ". The color palette is still fine.

How may I move this bug report to either Xorg or to the Radeon video

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-12-09 Thread Andrew Piziali
When the system hung this afternoon, I was able to recover control by
killing the X server with a QUIT signal (3). However, when I logged back
in from the display manager (LightDM), the color palette was messed up.
Logging out and back did not resolve the problem. I finally power cycled
the machine and all was well again.

Joseph, I am still waiting to learn how to transfer this bug report to
either the X server (Xorg) or to the Radeon video device driver.

Thanks!

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: "PageSize=Custom.Custom.x"

2013-08-08 Thread Andrew Piziali
For several hours I have been attempting to print a JPEG image from GIMP
on 4x6 photo paper using an HP Photosmart Premium All-in-One. After
adding a custom paper size named "Photo Borderless 4x6" in the GIMP
print dialog box, each attempt to print the image resulted in CUPS hung
with "rendering completed," as described earlier by others.

I have also attempted to print the image using Eye of Gnome (eog) and
Evince with the same result.

What work-around exists for a user to simply print an image on 4x6 photo
paper, since that paper size is not installed by default in Ubuntu
12.10?

Thank you.

[Bug 1221827] Re: HUD Shortcut to Thunderbird Menu Item Disables Text Alignment Menu

2015-09-22 Thread Andrew Piziali
No. I can no longer reproduce the failure in Thunderbird. The Firefox
failure cannot be reproduced because the Mozilla team substituted a web
page for a dialog box when Edit -> Preferences is selected.
Nevertheless, use of the HUD to access Thunderbird and Firefox menus
appears to work now (TB 38.2.0, FF 40.0.3).

2015-01-21 Thread Andrew Piziali
I have not seen this hang since I stopped using the direct rendering
(DRI) of the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 in this ThinkPad T60. I switched
video drivers (now using the X.Org "radeon" driver) because the new
external monitor I am using (ViewSonic VG2439m) would glitch, loose sync
and scamble text) with the ATI driver I was using.

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-11-20 Thread Andrew Piziali
System hung again today but I was able to kill the X server (Xorg) with
signal 3 (QUIT) by ssh-ing in from another machine on the LAN, running
top(1) as root, and using the "k" command.

To recap the current status: running kernels 3.0.0 though the current
Ubuntu 12.10 kernel, 3.2.0-56-generic, an undetermined condition causes
the X server to cease responding to the keyboard and only respond to
mouse movement in a hesitant fashion. Xorg may be killed by sending it a
QUIT signal as root. The kernel magic keys may also be used to reboot
the system (R-E-I-S-U-B).

There are repeatable video artifacts that may be demonstrated using a
Thunderbird message composition window that may be related to this hang
issue.

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU

2013-10-12 Thread Andrew Piziali
Kernel 3.2.0-030200-generic appears to hang just as frequently as the
latest Ubuntu 12.10 kernel (3.2.0-54-generic). Hence, I suspect that, if
this is a kernel bug, it was introduced before 3.2.0-030200-generic.

[Bug 1195908] [NEW] Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend

2013-06-28 Thread Andrew Piziali
Public bug reported:

When a recent Ubuntu update replaced the 3.2.0-45 Linux kernel with
3.2.0-48, suspending my IBM ThinkPad T60 laptop started failing.

I suspend my T60 using a shell program that invokes rtcwake(8) as
follows:

rtcwake --mode mem --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s)

where $wakeupTime is either "2150 tomorrow" or "2150 today", depending
upon whether the program is invoked before 9:50 pm or not. In either
case, suspend succeeds using the 3.2.0-45 kernel by flashing the laptop
"moon" LED while suspend is in progress, becoming a solid LED when
suspend completes. With the 3.2.0-48 kernel, the LED begins flashing but
never turns solid. The T60 can only be restarted by powering it off and
back on.

This failure is independent of whether the video is in graphics mode
(Xorg server) or text mode (virtual console).

Will do.

Thanks!

Re: [Bug 1195908] Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend

2013-07-04 Thread Andrew Piziali
Joseph,

I tested the suspend/resume scenario using the 3.10 mainline kernel
and it still fails, although in a different manner.

Whereas with the 3.2.0-48 kernel, the T60 intermittently fails to
complete the suspend process, leaving the "moon" LED in a fast blink,
with the 3.10 kernel the T60 successfully suspended and resumed from
both text and graphics modes. However, after the first resume,
switching from the X display on virtual console 7 (vc 7) to the text
display on vc 1 leaves the display completely scrambled. Switching back
to vc 7, the X display is fine, yet no text display (vc 1-6) is
uncorrupted thereafter.

These are the suspend/resume results, using my shell program
suspend_until_tonight (which calls rtc_wake), for the 3.2.0-45, 3.2.0-48
and 3.10 kernels, after 3.10 was installed:

* 3.2.0-45 kernel
   o sleep_until_tonight text: pass
   o sleep_until_tonight graphics: pass

* 3.2.0-48 kernel
   o sleep_until_tonight text: pass
   o sleep_until_tonight graphics: pass

* 3.10 kernel
   o sleep_until_tonight text: fail
+ Video corrupted when switching to vc1, after resume
   o sleep_until_tonight graphics: fail
+ Video corrupted when switching to vc1, after resume

[Bug 1195908] Re: Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend

2013-07-11 Thread Andrew Piziali
After a kernel update to 3.2.0-49 and changing the mechanism I use to
put the machine into suspend, this failure no longer manifests itself.
Whereas I was using:

   rtcwake --mode mem --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s)

to suspend the machine, I now use:

   rtcwake --mode no --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s)
   pm-suspend

because the former was not running the pm-action hooks needed to
reliably turn on the external monitor attached to the docking station of
the T60.
