[Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird
This bug report documents an incompatibility between the version of Thunderbird distributed with Ubuntu 18.04 and the version of VLC. One or the other must be changed so that a video attachment opened by Thunderbird is accessible to the user's default video player, VLC. ** Changed in: gnome-software (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1897460 Title: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1897460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1897460] [NEW] VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird
Public bug reported: When I changed my default video player from Totem to VLC, Thunderbird was no longer able to play an email message video attachment. By default, Ubuntu Software installs the VLC snap package, whose permission scheme prohibits it from accessing the directory where Thunderbird saves the video file to be played (/tmp/mozilla_andy0). VLC reports: Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///tmp/mozilla_andy0/[VIDEO FILENAME]'. Check the log for details. To reproduce the bug: 1. Open a Thunderbird message. 2. Single left click on an attached video file handled by VLC. 3. VLC starts and then opens an error dialog with the above "Your input can't be opened" message. [Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird
Sebastien, this is not so much a snapd issue as it is an Ubuntu 18.04 issue. The Ubuntu Software application should not offer to install a video player application that does not play with the its Thunderbird application. Hence, I changed the bug target package to "software- center." ** Package changed: snapd (Ubuntu) => software-center (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1897460 Title: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/1897460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1897460] Re: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird
Matthew, thank you for properly identifying the responsible component of Ubuntu 18.04 that prevents Thunderbird and VLC from interoperating. "gnome-software" is more precise. This is not a Thunderbird, VLC or snapd problem. This is an Ubuntu 18.04 application packaging issue. The problem is that Thunderbird saves a temporary attachment file in /tmp before invoking a helper application to open it. If the helper application associated with the file is VLC, VLC does not have permission to open the file. (In fact, the system /tmp directory is not even in the VLC snap's filesystem name space.) The solution is to build and configuration VLC for this Ubuntu release so that it shares its /tmp directory with the system /tmp directory, i.e. they are one and the same. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1897460 Title: VLC Snap Incompatible With Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1897460/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU
Running 3.2.0-55-generic, my system again hung this morning but the evidence is increasingly pointing to either the X server (Xorg) or the video device driver as the culprit. As earlier, the keyboard became non-responsive (except the kernel magic keys) and the mouse nearly non-responsive, the mouse cursor moving in hesitant steps as the mouse was moved. I logged into the system from another machine on the LAN to examine the running processes. avconv was converting a video file (68% CPU), kworker/1:0 was consuming 62%, and Xorg 52% on this Intel Core2 T5500 dual core mobile CPU. Suspecting the X server from earlier observations, I examined its log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log): ... [ 41368.758] [mi] EQ overflowing. The 3.12 kernel hung this morning, as in earlier instances. I expected all processes on the X server's virtual console to be killed. * After a "shutdown -r -t10 now" was executed from the remote login, ps(1) revealed that the X server was in WCHAN "exit" and its STATUS was "Ds." The system did not reboot. * Alt-SysReq-R, I, E, S, U, B rebooted the system I am now running 3.2.0-55-generic until I receive further diagnosis instructions. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1223055 Title: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1223055/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1223055] Re: System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU
System hung again today but I was able to kill the X server (Xorg) with signal 3 (QUIT) by ssh-ing in from another machine on the LAN, running top(1) as root, and using the "k" command. To recap the current status: running kernels 3.0.0 though the current Ubuntu 12.10 kernel, 3.2.0-56-generic, an undetermined condition causes the X server to cease responding to the keyboard and only respond to mouse movement in a hesitant fashion. Xorg may be killed by sending it a QUIT signal as root. The kernel magic keys may also be used to reboot the system (R-E-I-S-U-B). There are repeatable video artifacts that may be demonstrated using a Thunderbird message composition window that may be related to this hang issue.

[Bug 1195908] [NEW] Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend
Public bug reported: When a recent Ubuntu update replaced the 3.2.0-45 Linux kernel with 3.2.0-48, suspending my IBM ThinkPad T60 laptop started failing. I suspend my T60 using a shell program that invokes rtcwake(8) as follows: rtcwake --mode mem --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s) where $wakeupTime is either "2150 tomorrow" or "2150 today", depending upon whether the program is invoked before 9:50 pm or not. In either case, suspend succeeds using the 3.2.0-45 kernel by flashing the laptop "moon" LED while suspend is in progress, becoming a solid LED when suspend completes. With the 3.2.0-48 kernel, the LED begins flashing but never turns solid. The T60 can only be restarted by powering it off and back on. This failure is independent of whether the video is in graphics mode (Xorg server) or text mode (virtual console). Re: [Bug 1195908] Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend
Joseph, I tested the suspend/resume scenario using the 3.10 mainline kernel and it still fails, although in a different manner. Whereas with the 3.2.0-48 kernel, the T60 intermittently fails to complete the suspend process, leaving the "moon" LED in a fast blink, with the 3.10 kernel the T60 successfully suspended and resumed from both text and graphics modes. However, after the first resume, switching from the X display on virtual console 7 (vc 7) to the text display on vc 1 leaves the display completely scrambled. Switching back to vc 7, the X display is fine, yet no text display (vc 1-6) is uncorrupted thereafter. These are the suspend/resume results, using my shell program suspend_until_tonight (which calls rtc_wake), for the 3.2.0-45, 3.2.0-48 and 3.10 kernels, after 3.10 was installed: * 3.2.0-45 kernel o sleep_until_tonight text: pass o sleep_until_tonight graphics: pass * 3.2.0-48 kernel o sleep_until_tonight text: pass o sleep_until_tonight graphics: pass * 3.10 kernel o sleep_until_tonight text: fail + Video corrupted when switching to vc1, after resume o sleep_until_tonight graphics: fail + Video corrupted when switching to vc1, after resume -- | a...@piziali.dv.org --+-- / \ PGP Key: *---* http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x6F66CA9F -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1195908 Title: Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1195908/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1195908] Re: Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend
After a kernel update to 3.2.0-49 and changing the mechanism I use to put the machine into suspend, this failure no longer manifests itself. Whereas I was using: rtcwake --mode mem --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s) to suspend the machine, I now use: rtcwake --mode no --utc --time $(date -d "$wakeupTime" +%s) pm-suspend because the former was not running the pm-action hooks needed to reliably turn on the external monitor attached to the docking station of the T60. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1195908 Title: Linux 3.2.0-48 Kernel Fails to Suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1195908/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
