Okay, this appears to be a more general Unity HUD bug because the same failure (HUD access to application menu prevents subsequent menu use) occurs for both Thunderbird and Firefox. If the HUD is used to access, for example, Firefox Edit -> Preferences, the pull-down menus of the Edit -> Preferences tabs are subsequently inoperative.
