[Bug 348469] Re: New update notification method causing logouts?

2009-06-02 Thread Alex James
This problem also occurs on my recently updated intrepid ibex system, so
the error persists there.

Today I upgraded to Jaunty, so hopefully this problem disappears as per
Walter_Wittel above, but I'm always concerned when problems get fixed
and we don't know why because they can then pop back up with to leads in
sight...

2009-04-07 Thread Alex James
Rather than manually downloading those, I enabled the backports
repositories and ran

r...@amaterasu:/etc/apt# apt-get install libstrigihtmlgui0
libstrigiqtdbusclient0 libsearchclient0 libstreamanalyzer0 libstreams0

which completed successfully. I then disabled the backports repositories
and retried apt-get install kubuntu-desktop which resulted in the same
failure as above. Thanks for the idea though!

Aha. I tried installing the kde-window-manager explicitly, which then
reported a similar 'Depends:...' error, and the same for that dependency
until discovering the apparent bottom line:

[Bug 354927] Re: kdelibs-bin says it has a dependency which is only available in backports

2009-04-08 Thread Alex James
It apparently depends on a version of kdelibs5-data which isn't
available via even with the backports repository enabled (do you have to
specify the backport version?). Manual installation via

r...@amaterasu:/etc/apt# dpkg -i
/home/user/Desktop/kdelibs5-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid2_all.deb

fixed many of the 'Depends' errors. Now I have only:

[Bug 354927] Re: kdelibs-bin says it has a dependency which is only available in backports

2009-04-08 Thread Alex James
OK, I think I've got it fixed. apt-get is at least downloading and
apparently reinstalling kubuntu-desktop anyway! In summary the two
packages I needed from backports to fix this were:

kdebase-workspace-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu7~intrepid1_all.deb
kdelibs5-data_4.2.0-0ubuntu2~intrepid2_all.deb

I manually installed them via dpkg -i, as apt-get didn't seem to want to
despite my uncommenting the backports repository in my sources.list.

The bottom line seems to be that kubuntu-desktop packages in the main
repository should depend only on packages in the main repository so
users don't have to use packages from the backports repo.

You can call me a happy camper now. :)

Time to hit the sack I guess.

I'm pretty crippled at the moment by this bug, running elinks since
firefox is whining about some absent libraries and konqueror has been

Similar errors as above, but adept uninstalled many packages including

I uninstall some kde packages. Thinking they would be replaced with new

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7013162
There they report a number of the KDE packages being selected by adept for

being removed. Could this improper dependency listing be causing uninstallation
of other packages via an Adept 'update'? Hmm...

[Bug 87158] Re: vesafb automatically loaded while blacklisted

2010-08-31 Thread Alex James
Not sure we should really call this a bug. This behaviour results from
initramfs-tools.conf containing the line 'MODULES=most' which includes
all sorts of unnecessary things by default, maybe good for a livecd but
perhaps not for an installation. A better behaviour would be
'MODULES=dep' which only loads modules based on dependencies, results in
a much smaller initramfs, and still leaves the user with a fully
working/bootable system without forcing in unwanted modules.
