Re: [Bug 365191] Re: [i945] macbook1, 1 brightness works incorrectly in Jaunty
Upgraded and writing this from karmic alpha-2; I could not report before because there are so many bugs and issues which make this Macbook1,1 unusable in Ubuntu [from intermitent WiFi up to X11 hanging because the new KMS :(]... The good news is that this bug is almost resolved: in Mac OS X 10.4 there are 17 levels of brightness including no light; in Ubuntu there are 21 levels of which the two brightest seems to be the same (repeated: same brightness) and the two darkest seems to be the same (repeated: no light); But the feeling and user experience is the expected: no random jumps of light and decreasing/increasing the brightness works as expected. If this works the same in the final karmic release, I would consider this bug closed. [Bug 356768] Re: ath5k driver hangs periodically, please include trivial patch in kernel
Macbook1,1; manually upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic alpha2. Tried two kernels from karmic (linux-image-2.6.30-10-generic and linux- image-2.6.31-1-generic). The bug is still here. I'm not sure when it hangs or when it works, the net effect is that my transfers are as low as 10KiB/s (I expect at least 1000KiB/s) and ssh is pretty unusable. [Bug 113926] acpi critical thermal zone call poweroff insteand of suspend to disk or ram, results in lost of work
Public bug reported: Because of thermal problems, my notebook suddenly shutdown and I lost all my work. The cause was that ACPI thermal zone reached CRITICAL level, and the kernel call's /sbin/poweroff: ---~/src/linux/linux-source-2.6.20-2.6.20/drivers/acpi/thermal.c [..] #define ACPI_THERMAL_PATH_POWEROFF "/sbin/poweroff" [..] static int acpi_thermal_critical(struct acpi_thermal *tz) { if (!tz || !tz->trips.critical.flags.valid) return -EINVAL; if (tz->temperature >= tz->trips.critical.temperature) { printk(KERN_WARNING PREFIX "Critical trip point\n"); tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled = 1; } else if (tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled) tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled = 0; printk(KERN_EMERG "Critical temperature reached (%ld C), shutting down.\n", KELVIN_TO_CELSIUS(tz->temperature)); acpi_bus_generate_event(tz->device, ACPI_THERMAL_NOTIFY_CRITICAL, tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled); acpi_thermal_call_usermode(ACPI_THERMAL_PATH_POWEROFF); return 0; } ---~/src/linux/linux-source-2.6.20-2.6.20/drivers/acpi/thermal.c HOW TO REPRODUCE: 1.a Keep your notebook/hardware unclean ;) and do some cpu stress 1.b Increase the trip_point to a minor level. Ex: # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature temperature: 53 C # echo -n "50:0:0:0:0" > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/trip_points 2. Watch your notebook shutting down with no warning or futher action RECOMMENDATION: 1. Change the thermal.c module for calling a script. This script may check if acpid is working, if it is not active, THEN call poweroff 2. Add an acpid script int /etc/acpi for taking care of the process. This script may call gnome-power-manager for asking the user to suspend to disk/ram. The script may also slow down the cpu frequency, if possible. Thanks, Please note that while this setup is not "recommended", it is still a valid setup. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal In gnome-terminal, edit -> profile preferences -> background, the labels are incorrect for the slide. It says 'None', but you get full transparency. The other side says 'Maximum', but you get no transparency. An easy way to solve this is to invert the slide. Attached, a patch who does exactly that. [Bug 356768] Re: ath5k driver hangs periodically, please include trivial patch in kernel
To ubuntu kernel-maintainers: Could you please add "CONFIG_ATH5K_DEBUG=y" to linux-image- ? This will allow the users of this hardware to better debug and know/report when/how the wireless stop working, just by setting the following: ---/etc/modules ath5k debug=0x25 ---/etc/modules--- Normal users will not have this setup, so they will not notice any change.
