Re: [Bug 365191] Re: [i945] macbook1, 1 brightness works incorrectly in Jaunty

2009-07-01 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Upgraded and writing this from karmic alpha-2; I could not report before
because there are so many bugs and issues which make this Macbook1,1
unusable in Ubuntu [from intermitent WiFi up to X11 hanging because the
new KMS :(]...

The good news is that this bug is almost resolved: in Mac OS X 10.4
there are 17 levels of brightness including no light; in Ubuntu there
are 21 levels of which the two brightest seems to be the same (repeated:
same brightness) and the two darkest seems to be the same (repeated: no
light); But the feeling and user experience is the expected: no random
jumps of light and decreasing/increasing the brightness works as
expected.

If this works the same in the final karmic release, I would consider
this bug closed.

Thanks,

[Bug 356768] Re: ath5k driver hangs periodically, please include trivial patch in kernel

2009-07-01 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Macbook1,1; manually upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic alpha2.

Tried two kernels from karmic (linux-image-2.6.30-10-generic and linux-
image-2.6.31-1-generic). The bug is still here. I'm not sure when it
hangs or when it works, the net effect is that my transfers are as low
as 10KiB/s (I expect at least 1000KiB/s) and ssh is pretty unusable.

This is the top bug that keeps me using Mac OS Tiger instead of Ubuntu,
please tell me what can I do to fix this bug.

[Bug 394531] [NEW] Hangs with KMS with newest kernels

2009-07-01 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Macbook1,1 upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic.

With kernels linux-image-2.6.30-10-generic and linux-
image-2.6.31-1-generic, X starts but hangs right after gdm presents the
login window: I cannot type my username, change to VT consoles or move
my mouse; mouse cursor seems corrupted.

Workaround is disabling KMS in /etc/default/grub, and everything works right
again:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.modeset=0"

[Bug 367309] Re: [i945GM] xrandr backlight control is bizarre on Macbook

2009-04-30 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Nice!

I confirm that running this command fixes the bug and the screen brightness
works better:
$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination

Maybe (all/some?) macbook models should have BACKLIGHT_CONTROL
configured to "combination". However, there is a feature that works in
MacOS X that I cannot replicate: If go decrease the brightness all the
way down, the LCD light goes off...

I suggest marking this bug as a duplicate of bug #365191.

[Bug 296880] Re: Vuze won't launch if default Java is not Java 6

2009-04-30 Thread Aldrin Martoq
@wensveen: If I understand correctly, your proposition doesn't fix the
bug. I have installed both sun-java-5-* and openjdk-6-jre, and my java
preference is set to java5.

My proposal is:
1.- Remove sun-java5-jre from dependencies, since it is simply wrong.
2.- As a temporal fix, either:
-- Remove sun-java6-jre form dependencies, leave opendjk6-jre and the script
will work as it is
-- Leave openjdk6-jre | sun-java6-jre as dependencies but fix the script, as
@fiXedd proposal or something that "respects" the /etc/alternatives (only if
the user choosed a java6 jre).

[Bug 371958] [NEW] Workspace Switcher 'shakes' when switching workspaces under compiz

2009-05-04 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have 4 horizontal workspaces and I have compiz activated, when I
switch to the next workspace the miniview of the WorkspaceSwichter
applet 'shakes' or flicks during the animation, which is kind of
irritating (Being using workspace since twm/fvwm era, so it looks like
something is not working right...).

If I disable 'desktop effects', the windows in the miniview
representation keep in their place as expected. I know it's not a
serious bug, but is kind of annoying to see moving things out of their
place.

I'm attaching an small video while I'm pressing CLTR+ALT+(LEFT/RIGHT

2009-05-05 Thread Aldrin Martoq
I'm sorry to take my last comment back: It worked correctly until last
night when I was watching an online video and the connection stopped
intermittently, making the whole experience unusable... Now I found the
reason:

Not sure what make the bug reappear, I've just started this notebook and got
temporarly connection problems.

I'm using a Macbook1,1 and in MacOS X Tiger wireless work flawlessly; it has an
option that says "Activate Noise Reduction" but have not found the same in
modinfo ath5k... Maybe as a workaround we could disable this noise floor
feature?

[Bug 365191] [NEW] [i945] macbook1, 1 brightness works incorrectly in Jaunty

2009-04-22 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The LCD brightness stopped to work correctly since I've upgraded to 9.04
Jaunty. It works fine in MacOSX 10.4.

My model is Macbook1,1 and brightness worked perfectly in 8.10 Intrepid.

At 100% the display brightness goes 100%:
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes 0% (no light)
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, nothing changes
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 50-80% (not sure)
...
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 20-30% (not sure)
...
decreasing the brightness level by 1, the display goes around 30-40% (not sure)
...

the display brightness is completely different if I increase the
brightness.

So the behaviour is kind of erratic and useless... I've tried both
gnome-brightness-applet, gnome-power-manager and the brightness function
keys; it's the same erratic behaviour.

Please tell me if you need more info.

[Bug 296880] Re: Vuze won't launch if default Java is not Java 6

2009-04-23 Thread Aldrin Martoq
I've updated from 8.10 to 9.04, now vuze/azureus is not working.

The /usr/bin/azureus script has /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java
hardwired, but I don't have java6 installed in my machine only sun-
java5-*. If I change the script, I got the "class version" problem.

Please fix the script (It's harwired to openjdk) and fix the dependencies, so
updates don't break and make the package unusable. Current in azures is:
Depends: openjdk-6-jre | sun-java5-jre | sun-java6-jre, libcommons-cli-java,
liblog4j1.2-java, libswt-gtk-3.4-java

[Bug 285502] [NEW] Unable to scroll image using keyboard as advertised

2008-10-18 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

I can't scroll a big image using the keyboard. The Help (F1) states
that:

To scroll around an image that is larger than the image window or full screen

Steps:
1. Open a big image with EOG (just double clic in nautilus)
2. Press key "1" (this will set zoom to 100%)
3. Try to scroll the image using only the keyboard:
- you can't!
- documentation says arrow keys, but they display next image instead of
scrolling.

Attached an example image.

Scrolling using only the keyboard is an important feature to me. Thanks!

[Bug 285502] Re: Unable to scroll image using keyboard as advertised

2008-10-19 Thread Aldrin Martoq

I'm using the arrows keys depicted in the image I uploaded; keycodes 98, 100,
102, 104 as xev(1) says.

I verified this in 3 machines using ubuntu 8.04.1 . Did you save the
file and view it using EOG? Thanks!

Check Ubuntu Mactel support first:

I guess you need to SHUTDOWN completely your Macbook, as stated there.

[Bug 113926] acpi critical thermal zone call poweroff insteand of suspend to disk or ram, results in lost of work

2007-05-10 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Because of thermal problems, my notebook suddenly shutdown and I lost
all my work.

The cause was that ACPI thermal zone reached CRITICAL level, and the
kernel call's /sbin/poweroff:

---~/src/linux/linux-source-2.6.20-2.6.20/drivers/acpi/thermal.c
[..]
#define ACPI_THERMAL_PATH_POWEROFF  "/sbin/poweroff"
[..]
static int acpi_thermal_critical(struct acpi_thermal *tz)
{
if (!tz || !tz->trips.critical.flags.valid)
return -EINVAL;
if (tz->temperature >= tz->trips.critical.temperature) {
printk(KERN_WARNING PREFIX "Critical trip point\n");
tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled = 1;
} else if (tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled)
tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled = 0;
printk(KERN_EMERG
   "Critical temperature reached (%ld C), shutting down.\n",
   KELVIN_TO_CELSIUS(tz->temperature));
acpi_bus_generate_event(tz->device, ACPI_THERMAL_NOTIFY_CRITICAL,
tz->trips.critical.flags.enabled);
acpi_thermal_call_usermode(ACPI_THERMAL_PATH_POWEROFF);

return 0;
}
---~/src/linux/linux-source-2.6.20-2.6.20/drivers/acpi/thermal.c

HOW TO REPRODUCE:
1.a Keep your notebook/hardware unclean ;) and do some cpu stress
1.b Increase the trip_point to a minor level. Ex:
   # cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature
   temperature: 53 C
   # echo -n "50:0:0:0:0" > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/trip_points
2. Watch your notebook shutting down with no warning or futher action

RECOMMENDATION:
1. Change the thermal.c module for calling a script. This script may check if
acpid is working, if it is not active, THEN call poweroff
2. Add an acpid script int /etc/acpi for taking care of the process. This
script may call gnome-power-manager for asking the user to suspend to disk/ram.
The script may also slow down the cpu frequency, if possible.

Cheers,

[Bug 115938] Re: tinyerp-server does not work in ubuntu feisty python2.5

2007-05-25 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Joshua,

Did you created the postgresql database? (Please check
/usr/share/doc/tinyerp-server/README.Debian)
See the values on /etc/default/tinyerp-server

Check it, when you start the server it automatically creates many
tables. By default, the installation creates the user admin/admin and
demo/demo. Check if you can connect as demo and see the example data.

You may start the server from the commandline and see the logs:
sudo su - terp
/usr/sbin/tinyerp-server

Any other comment I will happyly help you.

[Bug 187226] [NEW] Missing pyalsa package (official python bindings for alsa)

2008-01-29 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

The official python bindings for alsa is the pyalsa module, which you can find
here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download

In Ubuntu, the package that fills the hole is pyalsaaudio; appart from
not being the "official" python binding, this upstream software seem
quitely old and unmantained.

It seems there are no many software based in both libraries, but the
addition will make possible to make new software for alsa using python.
Also, I've added more features to the binding: the alsa sequencer
binding, so now it's possible to create midi and related software for
alsa in python.

Thanks,

It also happened here, a Gutsy install even after the updated tzdata.
I fixed on Sunday doing this:
- Clock->Adjust Date & Time
- Choose Timezone America/Santiago (The entry _was blank_)
- Click Synchronize now

Before the fix, the /etc/localtime was a normal file with some data.
After the fix, now is a simlink to
/usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Santiago
I didn't check the /etc/timezone file before the fix.

[Bug 198858] [NEW] Chilean DST date change needs urgent upgrade for March 08

2008-03-05 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tzdata

Chile delayed the change of DST time from March 08 to March 29. A patch
has been posted by German Poo, and it's available at debian-volatile.

http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile/pool/volatile/main/t/tzdata
/tzdata_2007k-1etch1.diff.gz

Please upgrade this package soon, otherwise many computers will have wrong time
after this saturday.

Thanks,

[Bug 117288] Proposal: grub should select last booted entry

2007-05-28 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

Default installation should set 'default save' in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
This way, the last booted grub entry will boot.

update-grub should check if dmraid is being used and warn the user about
and/or disable the 'default save' entry.

[Bug 117303] Re: Lattest kernel linux-image-2.6.20-16 broke netfilter MASQUERADE

2007-05-28 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Thanks,

Please note that while this setup is not "recommended", it is still a
valid setup.

I've tried the old 2.6.20-15-generic kernel as you suggested and found
it behaves the same: "lo ate my ip address" surprising me and wondering
why didn't I notice this before. So, _it seems this is not a
2.6.20-16-generic related bug_.

I found what the problem seems to be. When ubuntu starts, it has no ip address
'assigned' to the interface, just the alias eth0:avahi. Example from runlevel 1:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o lo -j MASQUERADE
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# ip a
1: lo: mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
inet6 ::1/128 scope host
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: eth0:  mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000

PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

If you add an ip (maybe from dhcp), it works again.

I'm compiling/checking with new/old kernels to see if this thing has
been around. I'm kind of sure I've been totally unplugged before and
didn't happened this to me.

Thanks for your time,

[Bug 512155] [NEW] labels are swapped in slide of background preferences

2010-01-24 Thread Aldrin Martoq
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In gnome-terminal, edit -> profile preferences -> background, the labels
are incorrect for the slide.

It says 'None', but you get full transparency. The other side says
'Maximum', but you get no transparency.

An easy way to solve this is to invert the slide. Attached, a patch who
does exactly that.

[Bug 356768] Re: ath5k driver hangs periodically, please include trivial patch in kernel

2009-09-16 Thread Aldrin Martoq
To ubuntu kernel-maintainers:

Could you please add "CONFIG_ATH5K_DEBUG=y" to linux-image- ?

This will allow the users of this hardware to better debug and
know/report when/how the wireless stop working, just by setting the
following:

---/etc/modules
ath5k debug=0x25
---/etc/modules---

Normal users will not have this setup, so they will not notice any
change.

Thanks,

[Bug 511965] Re: [i915][kms] kernel backlight interface missing for macbooks

2010-04-18 Thread Aldrin Martoq
I confirm patch patch mentioned in comment #5 works wonderfully in my
Macbook1,1 (first gen white macbook).
That patch is not included in latest kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic
2.6.32-21.32).

$ sudo dmidecode -s system-manufacturer
Apple Computer, Inc.
$ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
MacBook1,1
$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

How to test:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-source
$ cd /tmp/ && tar xvfj /usr/src/linux-source* && cd linux-source-*
<< apply patch here to drivers/video/backlight/mbp_nvidia_bl.c >>
$ make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts
$ cp /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/Module.symvers .
$ make M=drivers/video/backlight
$ sudo insmod drivers/video/backlight/mbp_nvidia_bl.ko
<< restart X, F1/F2 controls should be working >>
