[Bug 376807] Re: ubuntu everywhere
DemonCcC, let me know if you need any help on the Wubi side. FYI at UDS there was some concern about the efforts involved in maintaining another kernel. I haven't spoken with the kernel devs since. For the time being, the best avenue is probably to have a package in ubuntu (ppa?) + a windows installer that can use an existing wubi installation. It looks like you are already working on that, which is great! It would be nice to have wubi set-up a windows menu as explained in the mailing list, and have it download and install portable ubuntu the first time a user tries to run ubuntu apps inside of windows from the menu. But then users might expect support for the colinux kernel. So again a separate app might be a good approach for this cycle and if it goes well we could make plans for the next cycle. That said, you could already use wubi codebase to create an app that downloads and install the colinux bundle and (if required) the ISO. -- ubuntu everywhere https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/376807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The above logs are fine, there is no error which is visible by the application. The issue probably manifest itself when trying to access a particular drive of yours. [Bug 283520] Re: Incorrect groot makes wubi installations unbootable
Colin, I doubt that grub4dos supports UUIDs (haven't tested that), and even if it does, things will be a bit tricky, since A) in case of updates we need to ship a new grub4dos (wubildr & co, which, by the way, might not be under /host) B) wubi actually uses a first embedded menu.lst that uses heuristics to set the bootloader root and then loads a second menu.lst (the one visible as /boot/grub/menu.lst) within that root. The second menu.lst does not set root, it only sets the relative path, which is why we use "()". Such heuristic approach, while not bullet proof for obvious reasons, seemed to work ok also with multiple disks. Hence i would suggest to stick with "root ()/relative/path" for this release. ** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu Intrepid) Status: Fix Released => In Progress -- Incorrect groot makes wubi installations unbootable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 289791] Re: GRUB timer in Wubi installation is too long
This is due to the fact that grub-installer sets the timeout to 10 seconds if other OSes are discovered. Of course in the Wubi case, menu.lst is used as second boot menu, so that a user has already a chance to change the OS in the first boot menu and hence the 10 seconds delay is not justified in this case. This was discussed briefly on IRC some time ago' but it was decided that special-casing that was probably not worth it. ** Changed in: wubi Importance: Undecided => Low Assignee: (unassigned) => Agostino Russo (ago) Status: New => Confirmed ** Also affects: grub-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low Status: New => Confirmed -- GRUB timer in Wubi installation is too long https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/289791 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 204133] Re: wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0
Martin, I sent an email to Szaka (ntfs-3g author) and took the liberty to subscribe him to this bug report. Szaka ping ;) My understanding is that Szaka is aware of the patch and that it will be incorporated upstream possibly with some additional modification. It is unclear though whether that will be done in time for Intrepid. Colin will probably prepare a patch for intrepid to be used if the upstream version is not ready in time. The lupin hack were less then perfect, for at least two reasons: 1) they did not really achieve full sync, hence exposing users to potential data losses as a result of hard reboots (comment #31), 2) they were not always "well tolerated" as the original bug report shows (comment #17), the values used at present are less strict because of that and while I haven't seen any complaint I cannot exclude that the issue is still lurking. [Bug 204133] Re: wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0
Martin, I am not sure what you are referring to as the "linux" bug, there a few related kernel issues I am aware of: 1) The "linux" bug mentioned in comment #17 is relevant for low levels of dirty_ratio. The ntfs-3g patch will avoid lowering the dirty_ratio and will indirectly help (which is a subcase of #2 above). 2) There was some discussion on the performance / reliability of the loop device in write intensive set-ups. See for instance http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/1/9/50. Colin seems to like the dm-loop approach. I am not sure if there are data loss scenarios that could be improved upon by using dm-loop or whether it is mostly a performance issue. My guess is that dm-loop might help with point #1 in comment #31 3) It would be nice to be able to use the standard mount option name "-o sync" as opposed to have to create a new one for each filesystem "-o syncio". Not least because it will create a bit of special casing in other code (lupin/initramfs-tools). From a past discussion with Colin it emerged that the naming was to work around fuse -o sync handling. 4) There is also a remount issue with loopdevices (see #201750). On top of that, there are separate remount issues for ntfs-3g (see #186117), even worse, it seems that remounting ntfs-3g ro/rw can produce data loss (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/186117/comments/10). Not sure if newer versions of fuse/ntfs-3g address this. 5) Related to the above there are the shutdown issues mentioned by Colin in comment #19. I am not sure what is that state of that given A) the ntfs-3g patch and possibly B) dm-loop usage. -- wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204133 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 204133] Re: wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0
Martin from the points above I do not think that there is any strict kernel issue here and the bug can be set to invalid. In particular 1) nothing to do kernel-wise only involves switching to ntfs-3g syncio 2) is a separate issue: dm-loop in Intrepid (to be tested and used by wubi). We might want to open a separate bug report 3) I guess we will keep "-o syncio" for the time being 4) already in separate bugs #201750 and #186117 5) to be tested after ntfs-3g and dm-loop and in any case will probably be a sysvinit umountroot issue ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Hardy) Status: New => Invalid ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Intrepid) Status: New => Invalid -- wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204133 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 269946] [NEW] open(filename, O_DIRECT) on ntfs fails
Public bug reported: It is not possible to open files in an ntfs/fuse partition when the O_DIRECT flag is used with the 2.6.27-2 kernel ("invalid argument" is returned). Hardy (2.6.24) is not affected, opening files on other file systems works ok. [Bug 269946] Re: open(filename, O_DIRECT) on ntfs fails
Yes szaka, that seems to happen with any file in an ntfs filesystem. At least when using the 2.6.27-2 kernel. I just happened to discover it while parted_server was trying to open the swap.disk file.
