[Bug 1801495] [NEW] cannot resolve Active Directory realm name with large number of A records
Public bug reported: We have 3 Active Directory "realms". One has 25 domain controllers/DNS servers and the other two both have 35+. The way that AD works means this creates DNS 'A' records for the realm name that resolves to all the Domain Controllers/DNS servers that service it (ie a DNS name with many A records). If we have a fully patched/updated Ubuntu-18.04.1 system, running "nslookup small.realm.name" returns the 25 DNS servers, and life is good. Running "nslookup large.realm.name" works - but only returns 30 DNS servers (out of 35+). Running the same command on a CentOS-6 system (ie no systemd) returns 35+ DNS servers. So that's a (minor) bug? ...but ping and other real applications are the real problem - they don't work at all in the larger realms. "ping small.realm.name" works fine, but "ping large.realm.name" returns "Temporary failure in name resolution". Also telnet, etc doesn't work. "ping servername.large.realm.name" works fine - just the domain name itself doesn't work - which makes me think it's related to the number of A records being returned. We are trying to add these Ubuntu laptops to our AD domains - which requires several calls to "large.realm.name" - which is failing - but so far can only get it to work in small.realm.name due to this issue. I think this is a systemd-resolved bug? [Bug 1801496] [NEW] Printing job in 16.04 is slower than in 14.04
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 16.04LTS OS Version: 16.04.5 CUPS Version: 2.1.3 Ghostscript Version:9.25 (2018-09-13) Printing job in 16.04 is slower than in 14.04 We(RICOH printer driver developer) are report a problem from our printer users: I print file Ubuntu 14.04.5, CUPS 2.1.3,Ghostscript 9.25 is fast(12 Seconds). But, after I update to Ubuntu 16.04, CUPS 2.1.3, Ghostscript 9.25, I print the same file with the same driver is slow(326 Seconds). I figure out that all the print jobs is much slower on Ubuntu 16.04. I view the "CUPS Error Log", it shows that there are three points which maybe the reasons that makes the print job slowly. FIRST: By counting the time from "Starting renderer" to "renderer exited with status 0", we figure out that 16.04 spend more time than 14.04 on "renderer" process. So we assuming that:"renderer" is one of the key process that makes the print job slowly. "Starting renderer with command: \"printf \'\\033%%-12345X@PJL JOB\\012\';printf \'@PJL SET DATAMODE=TWIN\\ @PJL EOJ\\012\\033%%-12345X\'\"" . renderer exited with status 0" SECOND: On 16.04, a print job outputs lots of logs as below: "[Job xxx] Removing document files." This step(“Removing document files”)does not exsit on 14.04. The phenomenon that print jobs slower in 16.04 is more obvious when printing many jobs in the same time. THIRD We tried drivers form other company(HP,Brother…), the printings also slow down in Ubuntu 16.04 than 14.04. Our question is: 1. Do you have any plan to improve the performance of printing on Ubuntu 16.04? 2. Do you have any workaround before this problems fixed? ** Affects: ghostscript (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Log time" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1801496/+attachment/5208724/+files/Log.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1801496 Title: Printing job in 16.04 is slower than in 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ghostscript/+bug/1801496/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Robie, right, sorry I ment to drop that option and even listed that as a change in the changelog "+- drop use of the -Ddb-path option which is deprecated now" I've built the new version locally and in a ppa and verified that the path is still the same so that option isn't needed/doesn't need replacing. [Bug 1799082] Re: Returning from suspend exits x session
So. I pinned the working kernel version, updated everything, and like a moron also updated the Nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers ppa, in readiness to try the upstream kernel version. Whoops. Now it no longer logged in at all, freezing in the same place it used to freeze when sleeping, just after ‘Started Manage, Install and Generate Color Profiles.’ So I removed the ppa, purged the Nvidia drivers, and then tried to get nouveau working... and now it all works, on all kernel versions. Which means trying the upstream version won’t tell us anything. I checked with lshw -c video and my 3D card is ‘display UNCLAIMED’ which makes sense. I actually have to use this machine, so I am not going to try anything else for the rest of the weekend, but I will try and get the NVidia drivers back to the state they were in initially. [Bug 1656790] Re: print-notifications: Don't show error for job in progress
First, keep in mind that one source package (upstream project) can have several binary packages in Ubuntu, each containing a certain component of the project. To get the complete project installed you need to install all binary packages, if you do not need all of the functionality you can leave out one or another binary package. Also take into account that you cannot combine binary packages of different version. You need to install all of the binary packages. So let us see which binary packages of system-config-printer you have installed: dpkg -l | grep 1.5.7+2016 You will see a list of some packages. You have to update all of them, all at once, with a single "dpkg -i ..." command line. So look at the binary packages of the desired newer version: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1 https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1/+build/13297396 See the section "Built files" under the last link. Download all .deb files from here and install the ones form which you have the old version installed with a single command line, like for example: dpkg -i python3-cupshelpers_1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1_all.deb system- config-printer-common_1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1_all.deb system-config- printer-gnome_1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1_all.deb system-config-printer- udev_1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb system-config- printer_1.5.9+20170825-0ubuntu1_all.deb This will most probably work. If not, we need to rebuild the source package for your distribution version, but try this first and tell whether this works. [Bug 579168] Re: VPNs to hosts resolving to multiple IPs often fail
well, the discussion has unfolded quickly with a negative response from James Cameron (probably the only remaining/active author of pptpclient). from there, I would see these options of what to do next : - send more responses voicing user concerns and interest in this feature to the started discussion; - propose our own patch for get_ip_address function in pptp.c (not sure I am capable enough as a C programmer, but I would start from OpenSSH patch posted at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/opensshunixdev/lErxlPk_MnA as a source for inspiration ); - create some external wrapper for quickly scanning a list of IPs and returning the fastest-responding one to be substituted into pptp command line. For a start, I would use nmap with arguments like these: nmap --script resolveall --script-args newtargets -PS1723 -sn vpn.server.name # as described at https://serverfault.com/questions/843304/can-nmap-scan-test-all-answers-from-round-robin-dns or at https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/141480/nmap-to-scan-all-resolved-ip-addresses-for-a-given-domain-name and then process its output in some automated way (I only used it manually and interpreted visually). this substitution can be usable with pppd configs stored in /etc/ppp/peers but I am unsure if it could be easily integrated into Network Manager setup. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579168 Title: VPNs to hosts resolving to multiple IPs often fail To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-pptp/+bug/579168/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1781294] Re: No sound card detected by PulseAudio and ALSA, but is visible in lspci [Dell XPS 13 9360]
Daniel, the audio card id string seems to be the same, so I suspect it might be the same issue. Anyway, I have found the culprit. Sound card was intercepted by another process (timidity), so Pulseaudio was unable to use it. I have discovered the offending process via the `sudo fuser /dev/snd/*` command. [Bug 1800280] Re: Setting ZSH as the default shell causes various issues because it doesn't source /etc/profile
> Either Ubuntu's zsh package should do the same (or something similar), or Ubuntu must put important environment variable stuff somewhere else and have only bash-specific stuff in /etc/profile and /etc/profile.d. Whilst I sympathise with the OP - I've used ZSH as my $SHELL for a number of years in the past - I *do* object to the former - /etc/profile *must* be POSIX/Bourne shell compliant[0]. The latter - files under /etc/profile.d - *should* be POSIX/Bourne shell compliant, IMVHO. Either way, all of the files *can* be made POSIX-compliant and have something along the lines of: test $SHELL = /bin/bash && { ... Bash-specific stuff here ... } after the POSIX-only setup. ZSH can obviously source the then-made-POSIX-compliant options from /etc/zshenv or /etc/zprofile[1] (or wherever they live nowadays). This obviously only concerns the environment variables, settings, etc. which are required to have the same functionality in terms of the operating system, in a way which is $SHELL-agnostic. We're not talking about options which only concern Bash or Zsh users, i.e. auto- completion, etc. [0] https://manpages.debian.org/unstable/dash/sh.1.en.html#FILES [1] https://shreevatsa.wordpress.com/2008/03/30/zshbash-startup-files-loading-order-bashrc-zshrc-etc/ My £0.02 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800280 Title: Setting ZSH as the default shell causes various issues because it doesn't source /etc/profile To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zsh/+bug/1800280/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1801522] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.10 boots into black screen
Public bug reported: I just upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 18.10 on a Windows 10 dual boot machine. The machine has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. I have tried to diagnose and fix the problem using prior posted solutions, such as video card issues with nomodeset(https://askubuntu.com/questions/162075/my-computer-boots-to-a -black-screen-what-options-do-i-have-to-fix-it and https://askubuntu.com/questions/1087559/cant-boot-ubuntu-properly-after- dual-boot-installation-with-windows-10) but this did not work, and the boot script no longer contains "quiet splash" anyways. Also in the boot script I set acpi = off but then I get another error, perhaps for another thread (PKCS#7 signature not signed with a trusted key), and the boot instead crashes on this error. In recovery mode (4.18.0-10-generic) I tried running fsck but could not unmount the partition. I am using 97% of my bootloader partition so I ran recovery mode's clean but that also did not fix the issue. I am not sure what else I should try - I anxiously await and appreciate any further guidance you may have. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1801522 Title: Ubuntu 18.10 boots into black screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1801522/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1801523] [NEW] Kate sftp edit not working in aarch64, kio-extras, termux, proot
Public bug reported: Hi guys Kate remote sftp edit is not working in Ubuntu Cosmic Cuttlefish (18.10) aarch64. When a remote file is opened, a dialog with red cross appears that says "Malformed url" and in Kate a red dialog shows "The file could not be loaded, as it was not possible to read from it. Check if you have read access to this file" I am running Lubuntu into a proot jail under termux in Android 8.0 Galaxy Tab S3 tablet. Everything worked before, in Ubuntu 18.04. I upgraded in order to use the new LXQT 0.13 that comes with Ubuntu 18.10. I have kio-extras installed, and I am using LXQT 0.13 desktop. Gvfs is working nice both in 18.04 and 18.10. Sftp remote edit can be done using gedit, xed, pluma, etc. Remote folders can be mounted by sftp in pcmanfm-qt, dolphin (and off course, in pcmanfm, thunar, etc) It looks like a problem with kio-extras in proot jail in aarch64, or maybe a problem in kio-extras in aarch64, but I don't have an arm64 machine to test it outside proot jail. [Bug 1801526] Re: Ubuntu internal error when copying 3TB of data
It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. 3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. Re: [Bug 1801232] Re: Ubuntu MATE crashes when too many external USB drives are mounted.
Dear Joseph, Unfortunately I am a Linux newbie. This means that I do not even know what you mean by "upstream kernel". I do know that when I tried Ubuntu MATE 18.10 that after three days of error messaged I went back to 18.04. I am still trying to recover data from the initial 18.04 total meltdown (I was not even able to boot). After installing different versions of Ubuntu three times in one week, I am leery of trying some method I do not know to try an "upstream kernel". I only send in the bug reports to help the developers fix their bugs - as opposed to John Dominique Wernier's technique of not including the bugs in first place. I do know that Ubuntu MATE Artful Ardvark and Bionic Beaver both had this problem. Maybe its like the Unix limitation of only allowing 125 file handles or yacc only allowing 425 productions - the program limiting the size of a resource because he does not keep up with the size of modern computers. (i.e. Word6 limited to files smaller than 50MB in machines with 1GB RAM.) I also know that 18.04 is extremely sluggish with a 6TB external drive mounted (fortunately I did not buy the 8TB drive). If there is something I can try without having to completely re-install my OS and all applications, please let me know. I want to help.
