[Bug 531177] [NEW] Font/window sizes odd when using zoom + tabs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: roxterm Description:Ubuntu 9.10 roxterm: Installed: 1.18.0+svn13-1 Candidate: 1.18.0+svn13-1 Note this is on the beta I'm testing per wishlist bug 509544. I also tried testing using stock ROXTerm 1.0.8 on Hardy, but in that case View > Zoom in had no effect at all. Problem: Font and window sizes get odd fast when using zoom and tabs. To reproduce: Open ROXTerm, CTRL++ a few times to zoom in, open a new tab. The font in the new tab will be significantly larger than the tab we just left. Opening a new tab again makes it even worse. Yet, using a 'roxterm --tab' command from within a zoomed tab opens a new tab with the default font. Also, I had some cases where the window size changed wildly (presumably to try to keep X rows and Y columns with a larger font), but now I can't reproduce that. It may have been because I changed the default size and then zoomed without having restarted the terminal. Use case: hooked up a media PC and was debugging something, but I can't see the terminal at 1900xwhatever from the couch. I made the font much larger, then opened some more tabs and things got odd. Expected: I would personally prefer that all tabs in a given window have the same zoom setting (i.e., font size), period, and that the window never change size unless I drag it or change it in the Prefs > Edit Current Profile > Appearance > Size dialog. I also understand that zoom setting and window size can easily conflict and/or become too large to fit on the desktop. However, all of that is because window size is specified in rows and columns, but zoom makes those relative. Personally, on a zoom operation, I'd leave the window size alone, and just change the font within that given window (keeping the font the same in all tabs in that window). If the user wants to change window size they can drag the frame or use the size dialog box. That seems to me to be the principle of least surprise, but it may lead to confusion about the window size setting due to relative font sizes. Possible solutions there are to add a note that row/columns refer to the default font size (AKA zoom setting) only, and that perceived rows/columns may differ based on zoom. Or a different unit, such as pixels, could be used instead. I actually don't like that idea, since other terminals use row/column units and pixels make much less sense than rows/columns in this context. ** Affects: roxterm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Font/window sizes odd when using zoom + tabs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531177 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531184] [NEW] gedit schemas is not registered after ubiquity install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity This bug occurs with ubiquity. With Alternate CD, it does not occur. Expected result: 1. choose language "日本語" (Japanese) in ubiquity 2. complete install and reboot 3. execute the below line in terminal $ gconftool --get /apps/gedit-2/preferences/encodings/auto_detected 4. get the value below [UTF-8,CURRENT,ISO-2022-JP,SHIFT_JIS,EUC-JP] Actual result: 4. get the value below [UTF-8,CURRENT,ISO-8859-15,UTF-16] The value is defined in /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gedit.schemas. But "$ gconftool --get" returns C locale's value in any locales because the schemas is not registered. After running "$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gedit" manually, we can get expected result. The schemas is necessary for auto detect encodings in each locale. Note that with this value set to the more limited character sets, many common text files distributed in Japan cannot be read by gedit. [Bug 279302] Re: Rhythmbox visualization popup toolbar defines window's minimum width
My idea for a better solution would be a button in one of the corners of the visualization itself, as seen in the attached mockup. Clicking the button would pop up a context menu that has the same options as the hover toolbar currently. This would not only save space, but prevent the (quite distracting) jumping around of the visualization, as the hover toolbar resizes the canvas instead of appearing over it (like for example the seekbar in a fullscreen Totem). Optionally, the Options button could fade in and out as the mouse cursor hovers over the visualization. I realize that the current implementation might not allow for an alpha- blended smoothly animated button, or would take too much time to add, but even then, a single button for settings that are probably not changed too often would be a way better solution than a large toolbar. ** Attachment added: "Mockup for alternative solution to visualization settings widget" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/40045477/Rhythmbox-Vis-Settings-mockup.png ** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- Rhythmbox visualization popup toolbar defines window's minimum width https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279302 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531186] [NEW] TCP sockets and plasmoids freeze when connecting to the network
Public bug reported: I am running Kubuntu 9.10 on a laptop. A few seconds after I connect to the network, either using WLAN or Ethernet, the KDE desktop (i.e. the KDE menu button, the task bar and all widgets on the desktop and the task bar) freeze. In addition, web browsers (google chrome, firefox, wget) although responsive, are unable to connect to the Internet. The problem seems to affect TCP sockets in general, since 'telnet www.google.com 80' also does not work. However, 'ping www.yahoo.com' works normally. Killing knetworkmanager de-freezes the system after 1 or 2 minutes. Logging out and in of KDE also de-freezes the system. Connecting again causes the freeze. The problem occurred occasionally in the past and I usually worked around it by logging out and in. Now it has become systematic. Unfortunately, since I cannot connect to the Internet from the affected system I cannot report the bug via the standard tools. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- TCP sockets and plasmoids freeze when connecting to the network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531195] [NEW] euca_conf --register-nodes should not return 0 if keys cannot be synced
Public bug reported: Even if the key synchronization fails, euca_conf --register-nodes returns 0. This results in giving false information to the autoregistration process and making the situation difficult to debug. This is due to the way the support for multiple IPs is coded: it will not fail (and return nonzero) on the first IP that fails but print out an error message, continue to try adding all the others, and always return 0 at the end. [Bug 455709] Re: "mounting eCryptfs: [-2] No such file or directory" when trying to mount encrypted home
Solved. The problem is 50% a minor flaw in mount.ecryptfs and 50% user error. * mount.ecryptfs: As of ecryptfs-utils version 81-0ubuntu3, if you mount interactively (i.e. mount -t ecryptfs /path1/private /path2/public) and ask to use FNEK, mount.ecryptfs will suggest the wrong key when it prompts you for the FNEK key signature. Everyone assumes that the suggestion must be right, chooses the default, and gets an incorrectly mounted directory. Interestingly, the mount does not fail, and the filenames are correct, even though the wrong FNEK key was used. It's just that none of the files are accessible. If the mount had failed or the filenames were wrong, then the users would have guessed (sooner or later) that something was wrong with the FNEK key, tried switching the keys around, and gotten a correctly mounted directory. Instead, you get bug reports. Another interesting thing about mount.ecryptfs is that it effectively ignores the ecryptfs_sig option. It always inserts its own ecryptfs_sig option derived from looking at your passphrase, thus masking the ecryptfs_sig explicitly provided by the user. This is another reason why users get confused: if mount.ecryptfs blindly used the ecryptfs_sig specified by the user, then the whole mount would fail if the keys got reversed. Instead, it looks like the keys were correct, but something went wrong internally. * user error: Your instructions in #3 are correct. However neither Martin nor I followed them perfectly, because we had both tried to mount interactively before ever coming here to report a bug. We already "knew" which key was for content and which key was for FNEK, so being smart guys we skipped the SIG1=$(head...) and SIG2=$(tail...) steps and just put in the keys by hand. Given that mount.ecryptfs doesn't report a failure when you get the keys reversed, I think this is probably a common problem. My suggestions: 1) Correct mount.ecryptfs to suggest the correct key. This will make most of the "I can't recover my home directory" bug reports and help requests disappear. 2) Have mount.ecryptfs fail or issue a warning on stderr if the ecryptfs_sig option it derives from the passphrase conflicts with one explicitly provided as a mount option. 3) Prominently post instructions for recovering your home directory, in which you warn the user not to trust the suggested FNEK signature. I have noticed that some of the recovery instructions you have posted (on your blog and in Linux Magazine) use chroot and ecryptfs-mount- private, and therefore rely on having the entire original filesystem available in a healthy state. However, I have also noticed a lot of help requests from people who have a backup of the .Private directory and nothing else. In fact, I think this is by far the most likely scenario for anyone trying to recover a home directory. (If the original system is in a healthy state, you could just boot it.) Reading these help requests it seems that most people try the chroot + ecryptfs- mount-private approach, and when that fails they usually come to the conclusion that their filenames are unrecoverable, say some bad things about ecryptfs, and give up. If you replaced the chroot + ecryptfs- mount-private instructions with instructions for root to mount -t ecryptfs (and be careful about the FNEK signature), these users would be able to recover their data the first time around. -- "mounting eCryptfs: [-2] No such file or directory" when trying to mount encrypted home https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/455709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531198] [NEW] Laptop hangs on suspend
Public bug reported: Sometimes suspend fails on my FS lifebook T5010 tablet laptop with internal modem for mobile broadband. I am not sure about which package is the cause. The screen goes blank and the disk access light goes out, but power is not turned down. (LEDs which normally start blinking stay steady). The system does not respond and has to be powered off completely. My impression is that the risk is higher when suspending after leaving the laptop alone for some time (cron?), and after using the internal "GSM" (UMTS) modem (sierra). (BTW, the broadband connection sometimes fails after successful suspend. In that case disabling network, turning the kill-switch off and on and re-enabling network helps.) My impression is also that the problem may sometimes be triggered by my turning the screen (physical screen only, not the display mode) to use tablet mode. This morning the last syslog message prior to the failing suspend was that the anacron main process had receive the KILL signal. I have had this problem for a long time (I believe also with 9.04), and recently it's been happening quite frequently. I haven't reported it before since it's rather vague where the problem is. It's quite annoying, however. [Bug 510001] Re: [lucid alpha-2][radeon] Color depth degradation after resume (ATI Mobility Radeon X700)
I have to withdraw my previous comment. The truth is that I have two machines theoretically with the same configuration (except the hard drives are different). Both are the same acer ferrari 4005 WLMi model. In one of them the color depth degradation still appears while the other one suffers from Bug #524860 related to gnome-keyring but color depth changes after suspend/resume does not appear. I did the following experiment: I switched on both machines when booted up I logged in, suspended and resumed. After these I coppied the file from /var/log/Xorg.0.log to Xorg.0.log_homepc (refers to homepc suffering from color depth changes after resume) and Xorg.0.log_hardnut (refers to the other laptop without any issue after resume) Please, find the difference between the two files here below. [Bug 531200] [NEW] Walrus partial get returns a wrong response code
Public bug reported: Hi all, I'm using eucalyptus-1.5.2-ubuntu-amd64.tar.gz and I noticed that walrus return a wrong response code when a partial get (using a range) is executed. The response code returned is: 200 OK instead of 206 Partial Content. [Bug 530829] Re: Authorizations is old and should be hidden
I'm actually considering solving this in a slightly more radical way. I examined the remaining reverse dependencies of policykit-gnome, and it's not a lot. reverse dependency tree: policykit-gnome gnome-lirc-properties gnome-mount gnome-volume-manager libipoddevice hipo xubuntu-desktop xorg-options-editor-gtk gnome-api-docs (on -doc) * gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager are obsolete and should just be removed. * libipoddevice should drop the g-v-m/hal recommends, they are obsolete and handled by gvfs/udisks now * xubuntu-desktop should drop its policykit-gnome dependency, I doubt that they use it for anything. * xorg-options-editor-gtk sounds old fashioned and could just go; I asked Bryce/Alberto about this * Once the previous things are solved, gnome-api-docs can drop its dependency on policykit-gnome-doc Once that's done, policykit-gnome can be removed from lucid, and policykit-1-gnome can get a Conflicts:/Replaces: to clean up policykit- gnome on upgrades.
