[Bug 529363] [NEW] HPT370 infinite reboot loop as GRUB loads
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub2 Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic installs perfectly until rebooted, when it enters an infinite reboot loop just as GRUB loads. Have tried repairing grub with LiveCD - everything reports as being fixed, but then after reboot - same reboot loop. Fedora 12 installs and works without issue. Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Alpha 3(02-28-10) doesn't even detect the drive. SATA/RAID controller is Highpoint 370, motherboard is Shuttle AS45GT. This is an old motherboard, but it's just irritating that Fedora 12 with legacy grub installs without issue. Uwe Zeisberger describes a similar problem along with a fix (for legacy GRUB) at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-grub/2004-07/msg00113.html . The posting describes something about how the HPT370 overwrites the default GRUB storage area on the hdd, and about moving it.. But I'm not sure how to do this with GRUB2. I tried to email Uwe, but the email address doesn't work. Thanks for any answers you can provide. [Bug 524860] Re: starts eating cpu when trying to unlock screen
Well , this bug is frustrating. Upstream has marked bug as incomplete since : " > Unfortunately, that stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot > to solve the problem. In particular, I need a stack trace of all threads, and > not just one (in this case the signal handling thread). " I have narrowed down the bug to - Only happens for auto-login users. [when users enter password in policykit dialogue to unlock keyring] - Does not happen when user enters password anywhere else [in the vt or during session login.] Since this bug is tricky , i have not been able to get a full gdb. - if i start gdb from session in a terminal , i cant get back to session unless i kill the daemon. [which does not give the fully required gdb] - if i start the keyring gdb from a vt earlier[user has to enter password to login to the vt session] , then the bug wont happen! Since i have entered the password before starting keyring-daemon. It seems that user needs ssh access to system to get a full gdb. [I'm not sure I'll be able to get this done , hope someone else who has ssh access can do it] If someone can do this it would be nice. They have to remove the 3 instances of the gnome-keyring from the startup applications to start the gnome-keyring-daemon gdb and have to use the components as args. Public bug reported: As of the latest update (0.2.16), usb-creator-gtk doesn't work. [Bug 528767] Re: Lucid alpha-3 fails to boot completely on Averatec 3280, Jetway, and gBox P4
Regarding to the Averatec laptop 'eros': Today I upgraded it using the alpha-3 alternate CD. I updated first with just the CD, disconnected from the Internet, rebooted, then found there were a few updates online and installed those. All the bugs regarding the screen driver still exist. The only changed I noticed is that now Alt-F1, not Alt-F7, is used to switch back to X mode from a text console (but the text consoles are still not functioning). -- Lucid alpha-3 fails to boot completely on Averatec 3280, Jetway, and gBox P4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/528767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 509024] Re: OpenOffice won't save/open to/from remote locations/folders
Still has the same problem in OpenOffice.org 3.2 on Kubuntu. Note that on GNOME Ubuntu this works fine - you can browse to remote locations and save and open files there. In Kubuntu, on the other hand, the only way to work with remote files is to browse to a remote folder with Dolphin and opening the file from there, but you can't actually save it back to a remote folder. -- OpenOffice won't save/open to/from remote locations/folders https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 509024] Re: OpenOffice won't save/open to/from remote locations/folders
Regarding the above comment - the reason you can't save files back to a remote folder after opening them with Dolphin is bug #427283 . Not that solving that bug will be a good solution: OpenOffice.org on Kubuntu should be a full fledged KIO citizen - the same as OpenOffice.org on GNOME Ubuntu work with GVFS to open and store files on remote folders. -- OpenOffice won't save/open to/from remote locations/folders https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529372] [NEW] User A can prevent User B from using sound applications by leaving a sound producing application open
Public bug reported: User A opens a sound producing application, uses the computer, and finishes, locking the screen. User B comes along and switches to their user. User B can still hear user A's sound producing application. When user B tries to play their own sound, they can't. Either they get a dummy output device or everything appears to work, but they don't hear anything. How to reproduce: Login to first user. Open a song with rhythmbox or totem, and set the player to repeat mode so you wont get to the end of the song before you're done. Switch to second user. Open the Sound Preferences window (You can get to it at System > Preferences > Sound) Go to the output tab and note the device. (Either you will have the normal device, or a dummy device) Go to the applications tab. Open Rhythmbox and try to play a song. (Either everything will appear to work, but you will hear nothing except the first user's sound, or you will not be able to get Rhythmbox to start playing.) Why this is a problem: Many flash-based web games have a sound output. If user leaves this open, even with the sound muted in the game, and then locks their screen and a second user comes along and logs in, wanting to use sound, they won't be able to. The only way they can fix the problem is either run "sudo killall npveiwer.bin" (which means they need administrator rights) or restart the computer (losing the other user's session and still requiring administrative rights). This makes Ubuntu have bad multi - user support as far as sound is concerned. Also, I didn't have this problem in Jaunty, users couldn't stop other users from using sound. bj...@zorion:~$ apt-cache policy pulseaudio pulseaudio: Installed: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu11 Candidate: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu11 Version table: *** 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu11 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21. [Bug 456637] Re: Please consider turning powermizer OFF
I do not support this bug. The users with faulty hardware that is affected by this bug, while significant, are not in the majority. I would be very frustrated if suddenly an Nvidia update caused Powermizer to be disabled for me. For most laptop users, this feature is crucial to obtaining decent battery life from these power-hungry graphics adapters. The solution is obviously for Nvidia to fix its drivers. I do think, however, that when a user installs the Nvidia driver a HUGE warning should pop up to advise users that they are installing a proprietary driver, that the code has not been validated by *anyone* and that it could very easily destroy their computer, that if they experience problems it is NOT Ubuntu's fault and to report all issues directly to Nvidia. -- Please consider turning powermizer OFF https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 519910] Re: package linux-headers-2.6.31-19-generic 2.6.31-19.56 failed to install/upgrade
My problems are solved so far. Here is a mail exchange in case anyone has similar problems. --- Hi Stefan, sorry for the delay, your advice with "purge" was the solution, and I did it right away.(apt-get remove --purge dkms) However, before writing an answer to you and a comment to the bug report, I had to see that the wireless worked as well. It didn't. In the past (1-2 months ago) I had the problem that, even though I did everything as indicated on the official broadcom site to download and install the 802.11 Linux STA driver, at boot it would always load the wrong modules. With help from linux-wlan-client-support- l...@broadcom.com I was able to change the boot image (with "update- initramfs -u") and it booted correctly ever since - until this version 2.6.31.19.32 Now since I had this bug signalled, I tried to repeat the exact same steps, but changing the boot image did not work anymore (I could do it, but at reboot nothing changed). I suppose it had to do with the bug, smth with meddling with the image, but I don't understand enough to follow the exact problem. So the solution now was that I had to make my own script to be run at boot time. Now everything works, but I am concerned as to why the script was necessary at all. The script consists of just these two lines: sudo modprobe lib80211 sudo insmod /lib/modules/2.6.31-19-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko Thanks, and maybe this info is helpful to others, so I am posting it on the bug report page as well, as you suggested. [Bug 433654] Re: [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences
This still happens on Lucid installs from the daily images (the lastest I testing this was in the 2-24-10 image), with the Us English locale. I can reproduce it every time. This is very frustrating when you have flash games that can make sound, and someone leaves a game open on their locked user. [Bug 529008] Re: Should emulate /proc/cpuinfo
thats exactly the opposite of what we need when emulating a foreign architecture :) in case of running qemu-user you want the ability to emulate the foreign architecture in a generic way. i.e. we build a static flavour of qemu-user for armel in ubuntu that integrates with the binfmt handler of the kernel to allow you run armel chroots on x86 systems. certain packages or build systems parse /proc/cpuinfo to find out the arch they are running on and its capabilities. i think loic wasnt specific enough in his initial description, if we run qemu-system there is indeed a generic cpu, what we would like is the opportunity to emulate this same cpu in qemu-user through i.e. some kind of overlay for the cpuinfo file if proc is mounted in a chroot. -- Should emulate /proc/cpuinfo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529008 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ideally the Epiphany browser does not need to be installed unless the user requested it explicitly. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnumeric (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnumeric (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-panel depends installs epiphany-browser https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/529388 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 529387] [NEW] Screen goes "Out of Range" when boot into live cd and first time ubuntu boot up
Public bug reported: This is a bug which has been affecting me since Ubuntu 7.10 (its the first release I started with), and has happened in every single Ubuntu release since then. I have been putting off writing this bug report, because I am not sure how I can explain the problem well enough. The issue is with the monitor I use with Ubuntu. Its a Advent F159 15inch (4:3) monitor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Advent-F159-Silver-LCD- Monitor/dp/B000GRU6O2) It supports 800x600 and 1024x768 with 60hz. When I boot off the live CD with Ubuntu, when the it gets to the stage with xorg takes over, it chooses the wrong setting for the monitor, the monitor says "Out of Range". What I have to do is start the Ubuntu live CD, tell it to boot into live cd mode, then unplug the vga port on monitor. After about 5mins (enough time for Ubuntu to boot), I plug in the monitor and I can see the Ubuntu desktop. It will be running on 800x600 at 60hz, 16bit. Here, I am able to install Ubuntu. Once install is complete, and I boot into Ubuntu for the first time, the problem will happen again if I leave the monitor plugged in. So I have force a restart and unplug the monitor, boot into Ubuntu, and plug the monitor back in. Ubuntu will again set the monitor to 800x600 at 60hz, 16bit. I will then configure xorg.conf file. All I do is tell it to use 1024x768 @ 60hz, on 24bit. I restart Ubuntu, and its running at the correct resolution for me. I can now leave the monitor plugged in and it will not give me the "out of range" message. In the time I have had Ubuntu, I have used 3 computers with this monitor. First Ubuntu PC used an ATi Radeon 7000 card (using ati open source driver), my next computer used a Intel i815 (using intel opensource driver) and my latest computer is using nVidia ION (using nvidia's drivers). This out of range problem happened with all these computers. I attach my xorg configure for all these computers.
