[Bug 178063] GDebiKDE in Kubuntu slows system to a crawl, eats memory
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdebi-kde Ever since I upgraded to Kubuntu 7.10, GDebiKDE has slowed the system to a crawl every time I've had to use it. Look at: https://440.us.to/screenies/screenie1.png (yes, there are security warnings but there is no risk, it's my home server) The spike in all four graphs is when I used GDebiKDE to install a package (new version of Opera). It hogged all of my memory and over 600 megs of swap. The system slowed to a crawl to the point that my audio dropped out and the mouse was unresponsive. I don't know if this is my system in particular or if it is a bug. I'm surprised I can't find any other bug reports for this. System info: Kubuntu 7.10 (with kernel 2.6.22-14-rt for audio purposes) running on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8 GHz) with 512 MB of RAM. The system is fast and responsive most of the time. [Bug 122636] Re: Gshutdown closes gnome session but does not shutdown down
This will not be fixed in gutsy (or feisty), as it does not meet the criteria for a Stable Release Update. Specifically, it is not a security vulnerability, not a regression (feisty didn't work), will not cause loss of user data, the package doesn't fail to build from source, the package can be installed, and the program doesn't segfault on startup. If you disagree with this conclusion, please review https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates and follow the process described therein to apply for inclusion in prior releases. gshutdown 0.2 was added to the Ubuntu repository in preparation for Ubuntu 8.04 on 12th November, 2007, and will be included in future releases of Ubuntu, closing this bug. Note that it is inappropriate to mark a bug "Fix Released" prior to the upload of a fixed version to the Ubuntu repositories. It is likely that the solution to this bug could have been included in Ubuntu 7.10 if this bug had not been mistakenly marked as solved. ** Changed in: gshutdown (Ubuntu Gutsy) Status: New => Won't Fix -- Gshutdown closes gnome session but does not shutdown down https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122636 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 178065] my udev rules do not work at all
Public bug reported: Something is strange in Ubuntu - I am using actually Gutsy. What should work is this in /etc/udev/rules.d/13-DBbackup.rules: KERNEL=="sd?1",SUBSYSTEM=="block",ATTR{size}=="16121824",NAME="usbDBbackup",SYMLINK="usbDBbackup",RUN+="/usr/local/bin/usbBackup" Goal is to use this udev.rule to give an usbstick a special name, mountpoint and run a script to backup a SQLiteDB automagic ;-) So far, so bad: First Ubuntu mounts the stick to /dev/stick - it just ignores my rules. So I removed the automount at the Gnome-Desktop via System/System-/Removable-Devices (or something similar, I run Ubuntu with a German localization) When I insert the stick now, the rule is still ignored, no name is given, no symlink is set nor the script is run. Actually SYSFS rules seem to be dead at all, so I used the things given by udevinfo for the device after plugging, dmesg shows me: [35317.105398] sd 24:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk okay, so I ask the ape: udevinfo --attribute-walk --name=/dev/sdb1 looking at device '/block/sdb/sdb1': KERNEL=="sdb1" SUBSYSTEM=="block" DRIVER=="" ATTR{stat}==" 24 19200" ATTR{size}=="16121824" ATTR{start}=="32" ATTR{dev}=="8:17" looking at parent device '/block/sdb': KERNELS=="sdb" SUBSYSTEMS=="block" DRIVERS=="" ATTRS{capability}=="13" ATTRS{stat}==" 34 23 456 31200 000 308 312" ATTRS{size}=="16121856" ATTRS{removable}=="1" ATTRS{range}=="16" ATTRS{dev}=="8:16" Great, Where does the SYSFS has gone to? [Bug 162757] Re: Screen blanks permanently on Toshiba Satellite 1800 during 7.10 Live CD bootup or full installation
Hi Leann There is no improvement. I've downloaded the PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD (as I have only 256MB RAM) and installed Hardy Heron Alpha2 onto my Toshiba Laptop so that it has the dual boot options of that or 7.04. The new kernel is shown as 2.6.24-2 in the boot options list. However the symptoms are still the same - when the colour loading bar fills up then the screen goes blank forever. When I use cont-alt-del the display returns as the coloured segments finish returning to dark. When I start 7.04 (kernel 2.6.20-16) after re-booting the computer works fine. -- Screen blanks permanently on Toshiba Satellite 1800 during 7.10 Live CD bootup or full installation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen
I have a similar problem, but a different outcome. The first time I press the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon, my PC freezes for a good 2 or 3 minutes - long enough to make me walk away from the machine and come back later. But then the window has opened to give me the options. I lock screen. Come back later and carry on working. Subsequent presses of the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon seem ok. Ubuntu 7.10 - Nvidia GeForce 6600GT using Nvidia Graphics - note: I had the same problem on the supplied graphics driver and I have tried both 64bit and 32bit distros. The pc is an AMD 64bit 3.8GHz Athlon. Thoughts? Or is my issue covered elsewhere? if it is, apologies, but this was the closest I could find... > I had been monitoring cpu usage and every 1 sec, my cpu usage % would spike to 70-80%, I ran a "top" and located the spike Xfce-4 battery -p. The battery monitor is just really sucking alot of cpu usage for such a small app. CPU usage can disturb other applications, but when it comes to what kind of behavior drains battery most (once kernel uses dynticks and can make HW to sleep when it's not used), it's how often something wakes and how long. For example SDL programs might look completely idle when they are not doing anything (use 0% CPU according to top), but in reality they are are polling the system (very quickly) several times a second. In this case I think the main problem is that the thing wakes up once a sec.
