[Bug 140713] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install
Unfortunately there was a small bug in my previous patch. I should have used a 16 bit mov instead of a 32 bit mov or else data would potentially leak from ebx into esp. Turns out that in practice, the high bits of ebx were zero so everything still worked. To test out the patch, I took a gutsy-desktop CD (tribe 4 I believe), mounted it via loopback (mount -oloop,ro gutsy-desktop-i386.iso /mnt). I then copied (via cp -ra /mnt iso) to another working directory. Applying this patch to the gfxboot source package (apt-get source gfxboot), then doing a make install. Then rebuild the gfxboot-theme- ubuntu package from source (apt-get source gfxboot-theme-ubuntu), and copy the bootlogo into the staged iso (cp gfxboot-theme- ubuntu-0.4.3/install/bootlogo iso/isolinux/bootlogo). [Bug 145827] Re: Gnome-appearance-properties freeze
The effect of my problem is that the application starts, but you cannot do anything with it except close it. You can go directly to some pages, with --show-page=effects for example, but then it only presents you with something to click on and then blank windows from there on. You cannot actually confirm the changes. So here goes.. System: Linux darkstar 2.6.22-12-generic #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 18:11:30 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux Gutsy, upgraded from Feisty. KDE is installed as well, but only as a 'see what it looks like' option. Not the main session. Whenever I start the app I get the following output: :~$ gnome-appearance-properties /bin/sh: /usr/bin/esd: not found QSettings: failed to open file '/etc/qt3/qt_plugins_3.3rc' (gnome-appearance-properties:11455): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed (gnome-appearance-properties:11455): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed :~$ sudo apt-get install esd Reading package lists... However I could not click on anything but down arrow seemed to have selected something, which brought up a blank window, to which I pressed Enter. It did change the effects. However, subsequent tries with the same command results in: "Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager." The only thing I can do is unplug my ipod--then everything resumes. I have tried several different ways. Plugging it in and opening apps, opening apps and plugging it in, starting the box with it plugged in, etc...
