[SM-USERS] Difficulty getting domain keys to work with Squirrelmail
I have a qmail server correctly configured for domain keys. This domain (mtnlion.com) successfully passes the [EMAIL PROTECTED] domain key test if I send the mail using Thunderbird through my normal qmail smtp. If I use the smtp option in Squirrelmail, the domain key is not added to the email. I also tried using the qmail sendmail binary with the same result. A suggestion from the qmail admin list was to make sure that the environment vairables needed by my smtp script were set. I verified they were, but still no domain key. This is a serious issue since I have users that need squirrelmail and if I turn off "test" in my domainkey dns records, their mail will be bounced by domains that do domain key checking. [SM-USERS] getting --> ERR: authdaemon: s_connect() failed: Connection refused error with password changing plugin
I am running squirrelmail 1.4.9a with qmail, vpopmail (including vchkpasswd), courier imap, etc. Everything is fine but when attempting to change a password using the Change Password plugin (v 2.7-1.4) I get the "--> ERR: authdaemon: s_connect() failed: Connection refused" message. I googled the error message (and lots of permutations) but got nothing on this. I checked permissions for vchkpasswd and the password file it references, but no luck there. I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction to diagnose this and fix it. Thanks, Bob - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [SM-USERS] Very slow display of all Squirrelmail pages
I have been using squirrelmail for some time. I just migrated to a new, fast server. For reasons I can't understand, it takes over a minute to display all pages, even the first login screen takes about 20 seconds to display.. I tried with a brand new email account and the delay was the same as with an account with a very large in box. For example, it takes over a minute to get the first mailbox screen. The compose screen comes right up, but after clicking "send" it is at least another minute before returning to the in-box. Other PHP applications run extremely fast, even those using database access. I am running qmail with courier-imap and squirrelmail 1.5.1. I use a dedicated qmail-smtpd for smtp outbound mail from squirrelmail. All qmail services are running very fast. The squirrelmail functionality is fine, just very very very slow. Any thoughts? I'm stumped. I think I have ruled out DNS as an issue since it isn't needed just to display the inbox and because I have no delays using qmail and courier-imap with a standard client (Thunderbird). I also did a test sending an email to another domain on my box. I am pretty sure the issue isn't any of the external mail processes. SM is running under apache 2.2. I have a bunch of web sites running and response is blazing fast even with dynamically served sites using PHP and MYSQL. I get to squirrelmail via a subdomain which has the webmail directory as its DocumentRoot. i.e.: webmail.mtnlion.com. Note that there is a very long delay even getting to the login screen (I run SM under https and I have other pages also under https that don't suffer any delays). Unless I have this very wrong, DNS isn't needed to get to the login screen, and DNS is running very fast too. This server doesn't get a lot of traffic. Even putting in an invalid user name and password takes a very long time to display a screen. I went down http://squirrelmail.org/wiki/SquirrelMailPerformance exploring the various solutions. I decided to try an imap proxy (http://www.imapproxy.org). This completely solved the problem. The docs for impproxy point out that webmail clients, like SM, log in to imap for each page. That gave me the idea to try imapproxy. I don't really know why it helped so much, since my telnet login to my imap server (which runs as a daemon) was fast. But it does work! My web server is successfully serving several active web sites, some using mysql / php for dynamic content delivery and they fly. My average load times are under 3 secs. So it probably isn't apache. I use courier-imap and connect to it with thunderbird. No delays getting mail there either. I would estimate it takes about 3 secs for thunderbird to log in and download a folder. The proxy essentially maintains state for the web session. I do the same thing with my dynamic content server. I also have a site or two that are stateless using static html. No delays there too. It's hard for me to believe that the proxy would make this much difference. However, I ran through all the other SM fixes (deflating pages in apache, etc.) with no change in performance. Then immediately after installing imapproxy, my webmail speed was as fast as my other sites (including the initial login page and the first view of my inbox). If, in fact, the problem was configuration, wouldn't you expect either the login page or the first inbox page to slow down? Also, before when I sent an email from SM, there was a 30 to 60 sec delay before the screen refreshed and returned me to the inbox. Now it just takes 2 or 3 seconds. Though it's nice the problem is gone, what bothers me is probably what bothers you; What could be changed other than maintaining state? If in fact, the problem is long login delay (though I didn't find that when I telnet in), then at least one screen would be slow to load (while the proxy logged in). But that' isn't the case. If the web server were to blame, wouldn't other sites on my server also be slow? Imapproxy doesn't change the way the pages are served. It just logs in and stays logged in to IMAP. I have the proxy set to only work on 127..0.0.1, so it is only interacting with SM. This problem (very slow serving of pages) occured on my old server too. I just upgraded and reinstalled everything. This, at least to me, rules out the particular implementation. I am using the latest stable version of courier-imap (w9th authdaemon, which speeds everything up). The only plugins I use are password and calendar. courier is fully threaded and has SORT (though I use neither in my SM client). While I don't have the problem any longer, I am troubled too by such a dramatic change just by caching the session. Is there something lurking in the background I inadvertently worked around? [SM-USERS] Forcing SM to check all folders for new messages
I recently moved my filters to the server. As a result, only the inbox shows new mail. I have to "visit" each folder to discover if anything new has come in. I am assuming you have apache configured for ssl (port 443). If not, stop now and go to the apache web site and configure for ssl. That's where all the work is. Next, be aware that https is IP address specific. Since all of the information in the header is encrypted, the SSL domain needs its own IP address. Here is how it looks for my domain: ServerName webmail.mtnlion.com UseCanonicalName Off DocumentRoot /usr/local/webmail CustomLog /var/log/httpd/webmail.mtnlion.com_access_log combined ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/webmail.mtnlion.com_error_log SSLEngine on SSLVerifyClient none SSLCertificateFile /path-to/webmail.mtnlion.com.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /path-to/webmail.mtnlion.com.key LimitRequestLine 16000 Options +Includes +ExecCGI +multiviews Order allow, deny Allow from all In my case, I created a subdomain webmail.mtnlion.com which is a virtual host. I have 2 virtual host setups: one for ssl and one for port 80 http. The port 80 set up just has a redirect ServerName webmail.mtnlion.com ServerAlias www.webmail.mtnlion.com UseCanonicalName Off CustomLog /var/log/httpd/webmail.mtnlion.com_access_log combined ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/webmail.mtnlion.com_error_log redirect permanent / https://webmail.mtnlion.com/ That redirect automatically transfers any port 80 request to https. By the way, webmail.mtnlion.com has its own ip address. Remember, you can only have one domain with one ip address for https. If you are going to configure apache for ssl, take your time and follow all the steps. There are many good sources of information on the web. Just google what you need. SM itself needs no special configuration for running under https (no plugins needed either with this setup). [SM-USERS] Email delivery error... but message is still delivered.
Hey all. I am in the process of migrating mail servers here at our organization and have run into a problem with squirrelmail (1.4.8). So, after getting rid of one of the aspell problems, I'm not getting a result which I think is tied to this same issue. When I try to run the spell checker in the compose window (with either aspell or ispell specified in sqspell_config.php) I get the following output: I tried to execute '/opt/TWWfsw/bin/aspell -a', but it returned: @(#) International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell 0.60.2) & tst 22 1: test, tat, ST, St, st, ts, DST, SST, Tet, Tut, tit, tot, tut, CST, EST, HST, MST, PST, TNT, est, tsp, T's With the close button appearing next. [SM-USERS] 'Delete & Next' and 'Delete and Prev' missing?
Following an OS upgrade/reinstall I've moved from my old Squirrelmail 1.5.0 running under PHP4 to 1.4.8 under PHP5. I'm running apache 2.2.3 One feature I'm missing are the 'Delete & Next' and 'Delete & Prev' links when reading messages. I now have to either delete which then takes me back to the message list, or navigate through the messages then delete multiple ones from the message list afterwards. I can't find anything in the config settings to reinstate the links, ans couldn't find anything in the list archive. What am I missing? Regards, Bob - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Re: [SM-USERS] [SM-DEVEL] Proposed changes to squirrelmail.org
I think it may be an over-simplification to suggest that SM users fall into simple "computer literate / illiterate" categories. I suspect if you had a marketing department you'd find that they consist of something more like: * Unsophisticated end users * Somewhat knowledgeable end users, including non-technical business decision-makers * Power users / alpha geeks * Developers (primarily interested in integration work) * Developers (primarily interested in customization work) * System Administrators (various levels of expertise) * Actual and potential contributors Your site probably can't be all things to all these groups, even though there is a degree of overlap between some of them. Speaking from personal experience as a developer with primary expertise in line of business applications and (gasp) Microsoft technologies, but with some minimal *NIX background ... in other words, "primarily interested in integration work" ... I found your docs uneven, with a lot of gaps and assumptions. I eventually pieced together a workable bridge to our DotNetNuke portal using Mono, but there was more trial and error involved than I would have thought necessary. Installation was something I ended up outsourcing to a Canadian firm, which got me in the ball park with shell scripts I was able to tweak for a successful migration. I even slung a few lines of PHP in the process. I doubt you contemplated the likes of me as a user in your original vision for SM (much less the hapless end user that Steve basically crapped on). As the product gets out there, it will continue to get used in ways you didn't anticipate, by people you would not normally give a lot of respect, much less the time of day. If there is one single thing you could do to make the product more useful to such folks it's probably to spin off a commercial version of the product and package it in friendlier ways with some hand-holding consulting services for installation, configuration and integration, such as what I bought. Or, provide some training and materials to help third parties get up to speed with that sort of thing. Beyond that I think you are probably just going to try to be something you're not, and fail miserably at it. For what it's worth ... --Bob - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [SM-USERS] cannot login
My software install was done following "How to setup a mail server on a GNU/Linux system" written by Ivar Abrahamson over at flurdy.com. I am sure everyone on this list is familiar, as I see some references to it in the archives. May problem is I cannot login to the "Squirrelmail login homepage." I can successfully ssh into this machine. I can access the "phpmyadmin home page." On this phpmyadmin login, my user and password work. When I try to login to Squirrelmail, I get a "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server." Tailing the mail.info (log) I see "[date] [time] [myservername] authdaemond: failed to connect to mysql server (server=localhost, user=admin): Access denied for user '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (using password: YES)" My mysql.log shows "...Access denied for user '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (using password: YES)" I have reviewed my setup and confirmed that I never setup [EMAIL PROTECTED] and that admin user does not exist on my system. So, I have been trying (with no luck) to find out why authdaemond is asking to connect via [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have may years experience with Linux and a couple years experience with Ubuntu. And yet, I am a newbie in the software area of mail servers. This is my first attempt, so, I may have made a stupid mistake, somewhere. So, I apologize for my newness up front, but I have to start somewhere. I've been seeing this regularly as well. I'm running 1.5.1-cvs from about three weeks ago. I haven't figured out what triggers it, but it does happen fairly frequently and not just in the inbox. It only happens to messages that I've just read. Bob C --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by BEA Weblogic Workshop FREE Java Enterprise J2EE developer tools! Firefox definitely seems faster to me with squirrelmail than IE6, though I have had a couple of issues. I've gotten an error with squirrelmail a couple of times that I haven't seen before (page empty, or something like that) and I wish it would go back to the same spot on the previous page when I use the back button instead of the top of the page since it make it easy to scan through a lot of emails. [SM-USERS] Common Address Book between clients
My email server supports just my wife and I and we use Squirrelmail as our sole email client in order to have a consistent address book. I would like to use Thunderbird for my mail client when I am at home, however we need to have a common address book between Thunderbird and Squirrelmail so that we don't have to keep adding or changing everything twice. The only solution I've heard of is LDAP, however I'm not too sure how appropriate it is for our situation. I think it may either be gross overkill or simply not support the functionality in the manner I'd like. It seems to be primarily used as a relatively static address list for a large group with a single admin changing the addresses. How appropriate would it be for personal use? I'd like to be able to add and change address book information from either client and use it just like the current address book. What would be the best solution for this? [SM-USERS] Trying to use SM with OS X Server and EIMS on separate machine

Thanks for the response. I have two questions though: 1. How do I determine if I have an IMAP daemon running on the EIMS machine? I looked through the server admin prefs but didn't see anything related to IMAP. 2. Not being a Linux or Unix guy, I don't know how to Telnet from my OS X machine; do I use Terminal? [SM-USERS] HTML email locks up squirrelmail
We have one contact who regularly sends HTML email which when viewed causes squirrelmail to "lock up" for several minutes and won't respond at all. Viewing as plain text works fine. Viewing the HTML in Thunderbird works fine. The headers contain: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/related; boundary="=_NextPart_000_0210_01C5024C.679ADEA0" X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.2616 X-MIMEOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2739.300 While I can provide a copy of one of the emails if needed, I'd prefer not to send one to the list. Is there a way to have squirrelmail handle malformed HTML emails more gracefully? I assume there must be some sort of problem with how Outlook is forming these emails, but as Thunderbird is able to view them without problem, we need a way to accept them in squirrelmail as well. [SM-USERS] Cannot Forward Large Attachments
I've been running SM for several years, and in the last few weeks, have upgraded the server and SM (to 1.4.4). Apache is at 2.0.50, and PHP is 4.3.8. All recent patches have been applied. Under Mandrake 10.1, I'm running a Cyrus IMAP server, fed by Fetchmail from my ISP, RoadRunner. I'm using RR's SMTP server to handle my outgoing mail from SM. Mail is getting to Cyrus just fine, and I can forward small attachments -- less than 3.4 Meg. I can attach and mail large attachments, I just can't forward them. The symptoms are that I can select the checkbox beside the message on the main screen and click the forward button. It thinks about it for a couple of seconds, then updates the status bar to "Done." There are no visible error messages or warnings. When I check the error log, I see something like: Allowed memory size of 11xx bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 64 bytes) (memory size above was 11M - I didn't write down the last 6 digits) I have searched the documentation and the archives, and have increased the limit for memory_limit to 11M, post_max_size to 9M, and upload_max_filesize to 8M. I also updated the limitrequestbody to 8M, also. I restarted the server after making these changes. SM doesn't appear to be timing out - after I click the forward button it comes back in only about 5-10 seconds, and I have the timeout set to 120 seconds. As I noted earlier, I can save the attachment that's too large to forward, then attach it and send it without problems. I can forward smaller (1.5M or less) attachments, at least until I try the large (3.4M) message. After trying that, no message with attachments will forward. When I go to attach a file to a message, SM notes that the maximum filesize is 8M. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [SM-USERS] folder list for multiple mail boxes
I have built a folder list that includes 7 mailboxes and their associated SPAM folders. I love Squirrel because I can zip through the spam boxes and kill the stuff that I don't want. BUT, the folder list looks like this: inbox spam inbox spam inbox inbox inbox spam inbox inbox That is it is using only the final folder name. I can't change the names (I don't think) so how do I get squirrel to display the full path of what I have selected? The reason that I ask is that today there was an email from PayPal and I have been having some difficulty with PayPal and email. The email said I needed to update my settings. I clicked on it and only too late realized that it was in a spam folder and not a regular mail folder and the email was bogus. So far I haven't found where it says that I'm sending html. The only thing I can find there is switching to 'basic html' to disable rich formating. So, I'm trying that. I've searched and haven't been able to find the actual answer. The question is asked many times. What is the real answer? One solution is to use a different version of change_passwd apparently modified by someone else. Another solution is for the end user to edit the php code on their system. That doesn't seem right. So, I can't find the answer. You pointed me to the compatibility page. Are you saying that I need to change the compatibility plugin to a 1.x version? If so, which version? [SM-USERS] Invalid Mailbox Name
Yes. I have read throught the document on the Squirrelmail site that discusses this. Yes I have searched through the archives but I am still a bit baffled by this. :-) I can log in via squirrelmail web interface. I can send and receive messages. The left hand pane gives this error: ERROR : Could not complete request.Query:CREATE ".Sent"Reason Given: Invalid mailbox name I have attempted to change the settings in the conf.pl script, to 'none' '.' and Maildir None of them fix the problem (those were all suggestions I saw elsewhere). What does the error mean exactly? Does it mean that it can't find a Sent folder, that it can create the Sent folder in the user's directory? I'm not understanding exactly what it is saying... I am using postfix and courier-imap if that helps anything... Thanks for any help. Bob Bob
Re: [SM-USERS] courier imap ,Maildir
What errors you do see in your postfix logs? How have you configured postfix? I had to change one other setting in postfix. I can't remember what it was and I'm not at my machine, sorry. There are too many variables here, most of which have nothing to do with Squirrelmail. You should get a local email client going with this first, then put squirrelmail on top of it. Really, I'm not trying to be mean, but you've got to break down the problem. Work with the postfix problem first, search the archives at postfix.org or something. :-) Bob - Original Message - From: "chirag dave" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 3:56 PM Subject: Re: [SM-USERS] courier imap ,Maildir > thanks everyone. > but still having problems. > here what i did , i close my sendmail service and turn on postfix . > using conf.pl i changed sendmail to smtp. > > i made changes in main.cf of postfix > > this is what i have > # DELIVERY TO MAILBOX > # > # The home_mailbox parameter specifies the optional pathname of a > # mailbox file relative to a user's home directory.
