(A small side that I forgot: especially pixelated retro pixel cursors, like old
Windows or Amiga cursors, are most likely never going to switch to an SVG
format since that seems somewhat unnatural. I'm not saying it's technically
impossible to embed such bitmaps in SVG, but rather that I don't think many
theme creator will think to do so just for better accessibility.)

[plasmashell] [Bug 496870] New: feature request - global slider for brightness

2024-11-30 Thread Markus Hartung
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496870

Bug ID: 496870
Summary: feature request - global slider for brightness
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: master
  Platform: Other
OS: Other
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Brightness and Color
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@hartmark.se
CC: natalie_clar...@yahoo.de
  Target Milestone: 1.0

I love the new per monitor brightness slider.

I would like to have a merged slider that controls the brightness globally.

>From my understanding of human light perception is that the brightness
sensitivity is non-linear, similar to out hearing. So monitors map this
non-linear curve to a linear curve with a value between 0 and 100, where the
perceived brightness difference would be the same if changing from 10 to 12
than 90 to 92.

I think the are three types of scenarios here.

1. The monitors are of same brand or have 1to1 mapping of the brightness level
so 42 on monitor is perceived as same brightness as 42 on the same monitor.

In this scenario it makes sense to just link the level of brightness together
so increasing by one increases by one on both and vice versa on decreased
brightness.

2. The monitors have different brightness levels, either that the monitor are
less bright due to hardware limitations or that the manufacturer has a
different curve. So for example 42 is 60 on the other monitor.

Here's it's more tricky to implement a global adjustment. One naive
implementation would be to just change value proportionally using a factor. And
if one monitor reaches 0 or 100 no further adjustment is possible.

3. This is for me a scenario that is unlikely, the user want for some reason
have different perceived brightness of their monitor.

I vote for this scenario to be unsupported unless someone have a good reason
for it.

Screenshot 1 (Plasma 6.0.5)

SUMMARY

Cursor sizes seem to be a mess and almost always to be too tiny. I have two KDE
machines, I attached screenshots from both of them. The cursor size varies
wildly depending from application to application, sometimes even using the
wrong cursor bitmap. And even when the cursor is on the plasma task bar, where
I assume it is easier to display correctly, it seems to be wrong and too small
on one computer. Since it's also not possible to set a custom cursor scale as a
user to work around this ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496830 ) this
seems to be an accessibility problem.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Use a white cursor theme to see where apps might revert to wrong cursor
bitmaps
2. See screenshots

OBSERVED RESULT

See screenshots

EXPECTED RESULT

Cursor size is the same as in screenshot 1, not like in all other screenshots.
Screenshot 1+2 are plasma 6.0.5 on machine 1, and screenshot 3+4 is plasma
6.2.4 on machine 2, so regarding size this seems to have gotten even worse with
newer plasma versions with new plasma showing an apparently wrong cursor size
even on the task bar.

I don't know what this "album monitoring" is or where to find it. Even after a
restart, the folder is not recognised. I thought it should work because it also
recognises externally created folders within an album. However, creating a new
album entry in DigiKam itself seems to work and it is recognised.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496867

I have illustrated the whole thing here again in the screenshot in case I have
described it badly. I probably didn't realise that all folders are albums ore
sub-albums and if I want to have a new folder (album) I have to create it in
DigiKam and not externally?

So that would be a wrong assumption and not a bug in that sense.

[krita] [Bug 496869] New: Broken "Normal" blend mode in layer styles of 16-bit integer image

2024-11-30 Thread varkatope
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496869

Bug ID: 496869
Summary: Broken "Normal" blend mode in layer styles of 16-bit
integer image
Classification: Applications
   Product: krita
Version: nightly build (please specify the git hash!)
  Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: layer styles

  Reporter: chirn...@hotmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 176245

image illustrating the problem

Git hash: 74d5360

(worked OK in at least 292fd73, possibly newer nightlies as well but haven't
tried those)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a new project in 16-bit integer color depth.
2. Make a dark background then create a white shape on a new layer (raster or
vector)
3. Apply a gradient overlay layer style to the shape with a "Normal" blend mode
and a white to black foreground to background gradient.

OBSERVED RESULT
It should look pretty obviously messed up. Other blend modes like multiply seem
to work OK.

See attached test image. The two left shapes use Normal blend mode and the
rightmost shape is just a vector gradient and unaffected.

Okay, I am officially an ID10T -- my apologies for the long delay, and for
wasting your time.

In the interim, I reinstalled my system (Plasma 6.1.5 on Manjaro) and, this
morning, updated to Plasma 6.2.4 (on X11).

I then caused my system to crash again, as before, before looking closer at my
'Link to Application-, only to discover that I never specified that the script
should run in the terminal (Konsole).

Upon specifying that the script should run in the terminal, it worked as
expected.

Maybe it still qualifies as a bug since, if there's no direction that the
script should run in the terminal, my system crashes.

Many thanks, and kind regards.

So far I have created all folders externally but within an existing structure.

Album Root
-> X

   New Folder 1
   New Folder 2

Now I have created a new folder externally below root for the first time and it
is not identified. So under "X" or "Album Root" this one will not be updated.

SUMMARY
I create a new folder in the album directory and DigiKam cannot recognise this
folder. DigiKam recognises other changes in existing folders without any
problems.

I have tried several times to update the whole thing manually without success.

Please don't try to install a new version, the 8.5.0-QT5 only starts with a
white window without anything else so even more problematic.

none

EXPECTED RESULT
That DigiKam recognises the new folder of the album so that I can continue.

It would be better if there were a general concept, where apps, such as
password managers, could mark copied data as "sensitive" and clipboard managers
could treat those entries accordingly.

Alternatively, instead of "pausing" klipper's history, why not add an optional
additional context menu entry "copy sensitive data" and/or an additional hotkey
to Copy+C -> Copy+Alt+C for sensitive media.

Hello,

Environment:
- Hardware: XMG Core 16 with NVIDIA RTX 4060 Mobile GPU and AMD iGPU
- Operating System: Arch Linux (up to date)
- Display Server: Wayland
- KDE Plasma: 6.2.4
- PowerDevil: 6.2.4-1

Issue:
The KDE brightness slider is not functional. When trying to adjust brightness
using the GUI slider, no actual brightness change occurs. The system log shows
repeated messages "ignoring brightness change, it's coming from the applet
itself".

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot system
2. Try to adjust brightness using the KDE brightness slider
3. Observe that the slider moves but has no effect on screen brightness

Expected Behavior:
Moving the brightness slider should change the screen brightness.

Actual Behavior:
- The slider moves but does not affect brightness
- System logs show "ignoring brightness change, it's coming from the applet
itself"
- PowerDevil logs show "Failed to initialize callback"

Workaround:
Brightness can be successfully controlled using the command line tool
'brightnessctl', confirming that hardware brightness control is working
properly.

I can also confirm that unchecking "Show selected window" decreases the lag.

I first switched to "Thumbnail" switcher, checked "Show selected window". After
some hours the lag is noticeable. Then uncheck "Show selected window", the lag
is gone.

[plasmashell] [Bug 496857] New: Icons on desktop not always active for doubleclick

2024-11-30 Thread akm
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496857

Bug ID: 496857
Summary: Icons on desktop not always active for doubleclick
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: git-stable-Plasma/6.2
  Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Desktop Containment
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: alexvk...@gmail.com
CC: notm...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY

This is on Tumbleweed (you should really put that on your list ;) )

It might sounds a bit silly for you or me, but my mother is 88 and a happy user
of KDE, however since the use of Wayland I notice her sometimes waiting quiet
while trying to open Thunderbird or Firefox with the 2 icons on her desktop.
What happens is she moves the mouse over the icon and she does not see the
light blue frame around it and clicking has no effect. You and me would
probably automatically wiggle the mouse and that solves it but she just waits,
after a while it does become active (probably because she moves the mouse a
bit) and clicks do register.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. drag something from startmenu to your desktop, copy or link makes no
diffrence
2. click 1cm below the icon on the desktop and then move the mouse over the
icon
3. 8 out of 10 times the icon will not become active and clicking has no
effect
4. moving mouse away and back on the icon solves it

OBSERVED RESULT

no blue frame around the icon and no mouse click is registered

EXPECTED RESULT

blue frame around the icon and mouse click is registered

The first blog post sounds like cursor sizes are a problem today, but might be
fixed tomorrow. In that case, why couldn't cursor scaling with a user setting
be readded? It seems like for accessibility this would be kind of an important
feature. Sorry if I'm just wasting your time and what I'm suggesting makes no
sense, I'm for sure not an expert.

[kmymoney] [Bug 415614] .kmy file contains invalid characters

2024-11-30 Thread Alan Prescott
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=415614

We're going back a fair way but ...

It was a character value 0 `chr(0)` and KMyMoney worked successfully with
the file.
Looking though my KMyMoney folder I found a saved file from that time and
I've tried to open it with qxmledit and get the same bad character error
message.
I've tried the same with a more recent .kmy file (yes, I'm still using it,
happily, thanks) with no problems so it was probably a one-off.

I think I reported this mainly because I couldn't think of a way of
accidentally embedding a non-printable ASCII character in an XML file - OK
so Ctrl-V followed by a control char keystroke (like Ctrl-G etc) during
text input works in a tty, but I don't think even that works for `chr(0)`
:-)

If nobody else has reported this as a problem I'd guess you can ignore it.

Thanks for getting back to me :-)

the text clearer that changing anything in here CAN make your session
unusable. Also, don't make this thing closable.

It looks like these animations are all being driven by QUnifiedTimer, which
uses a shared global tick, and the tick interval just defaults to 16ms. And if
some component ends up calling QUnifiedTimer::setTimingInterval(), it would
affect other animations since it's shared. It might explain why it fixes itself
sometimes.

If I apply the attached patch to qt6-base to change to default tick interval to
6ms, all the animations look smooth on my 144hz display (overview effect,
system settings scrolling, the smooth scrolling in okular).

whatever services the stop button terminates, end without kstars crashing

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Stellarmate OS X, a variant of Ubuntu

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I know nothing about Linux, so I cannot offer a crash trace back file mostly
because I do not know how to install apps.
