[gentoo-user] copy-paste no longer works with (g)vim + OpenOffice
I have updated to the latest stable (G)vim 7.2.303 & suddenly can no longer copy+paste from Vim into Open Office: it doesn't work at all with Gvim & unpredictably with Vim in a Konsole. I can copy+paste from Most in a Konsole to Open Office as usual. This is on the Fluxbox desktop with Unicode & a generally reliable system. I've checked Gentoo bugs & forum, but there's no sign of the problem. Has anyone else seen this ? Would anyone care to test it ? Could anyone tell me what other pgms/pkgs are involved in copy+paste between different apps on a desktop ? Might it be Poppler ? -- ,, SUPPORT ___//___, Philip Webb ELECTRIC /] [] [] [] [] []| Cities Centre, University of Toronto TRANSIT`-O--O---' purslowatchassdotutorontodotca

[gentoo-user] anyone using Lilo to dual-boot ?
My cousin in England wants to try out Linux & has an Ubuntu Live CD. To help her, I've installed the same on a separate partition in my box. The partition is /dev/sda8 & is formatted ReiserFS. I use Lilo as boot manager & don't want to change to Grub just to offer temporary help to someone, so I refused to let the Ubuntu installer overwrite my MBR, hoping to get Lilo to see Ubuntu via an appropriate 'lilo.conf'. I've managed to get Lilo to add Ubuntu to the boot menu, but only by mounting /dev/sda8 as /z/mount8 & using the line image = /z/mount8/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic However, when I reboot & select that image via its label, I'm getting the hoary old 'VFS: can't open root device "808"'. I've tried adding a dir /z/mount8 in the Ubuntu partition with a symlink of 'boot' to '../../boot' there, but it doesn't help. This does look rather messy, but I just want to be able to boot Ubuntu in order to advise my cousin when she starts using her version. Is anyone successfully dual-booting Linux distros using Lilo ? That suggests that it doesn't like the FS on /dev/sda8 , ie ReiserFS, which must be due to something in the Ubuntu set-up, as the Gentoo stanzas have 'root=/dev/sda3", which is also ReiserFS. > I recall clicking on 'advanced' or some such options during Ubuntu install > and it gave me an option where GRUB should go. Re: [gentoo-user] anyone using Lilo to dual-boot ? -- discovery
Further ideas : I tried booting a Gentoo kernel with the Ubuntu / & avoided the kernel panic, but ran into an Ubuntu init error, so there's nothing inherently wrong with /dev/sda8 . Also, I checked the Ubuntu kernel config file, conveniently in /boot , which has ReiserFS configured as a module, whereas Ext2 & Ext3 are 'y'. That suggests that it's running into a road-block: it needs to use ReiserFS to start 'init', but can't load modules till it has already started 'init'. In that case, I need to re-install Ubuntu using Ext2 or Ext3 . In fact, it wb as a bug in Ubuntu's "advanced" install. I added the 'initrd=...' line & booted into Ubuntu successfully; Gentoo doesn't require that line, perhaps because I use no kernel modules. [gentoo-user] checksum failure
On many emerge downloads I'm getting "checksum failure". Portage goes off somewhere else & finds the needed file, but it also writes the failed version into 'distfiles', which fills it up & sooner (on my old box) or later (on the regular box) needs to be rm'd. [gentoo-user] Gentoo on an Asus netbook
I'm planning to buy a netbook sometime in the next few weeks. The most likely choice is an Asus 1005HA : http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=025389&cid=NBK.862.656 It has a 1600 MHz processor, 1 GB memory & a 160 GB hard drive. Asus is a very reliable manufacturer in my experience & this version is the cheapest & looks as if it would meet my needs. Hopefully, the price will drop a bit more in the near future. My intended use is simply to be able to read, edit & make notes on texts, esp books I have downloaded (eg Jane Austen, Gibbon), while lying back in my chair or on my bed, not sitting up at my desk; It may also be useful to take to my office at the UoT to work on my transit archives there occasionally & might help at public meetings, making notes or checking documents. My desktop manager wb Fluxbox, my typical app Gvim, other regulars Terminal (Xfce), Xpdf, Feh: no KDE or Gnome; I might install the binary OO for a spreadsheet; I don't see myself using it for wireless Internet, video or sound. Most of the time, I sb able to run it plugged in, not from the battery. It comes with M$ XP installed in the factory (with Firefox), which I may keep in case there's a hardware failure under warranty (I can demonstrate it's not Linux which is causing the problem), but of course I shall use Linux for all my activities above. I thought re other distros to avoid a lot of slow compiling, but the advantage is a mirage: Slackware & Arch users have to compile kernels & I would have to learn how to do things their way to get anywhere; Mandriva has a version for EEE, but it's likely to default to KDE 4 (ugh!). I see myself using System Rescue to get started, reducing the XP partition, installing the Gentoo system + Kernel 2.6.31 + X , then a sparse set of apps; I might try compiling on my desktop machine, then copying the binary across. There are howto's on the Gentoo Wiki & elsewhere, eg http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installgentoo http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC_901 http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC_1000HA Does anyone have warnings, suggestions or advice ? -- ,,======== SUPPORT ___//___, Philip Webb ELECTRIC /] [] [] [] [] []| Cities Centre, University of Toronto TRANSIT`-O--O---' purslowatchassdotutorontodotca

[gentoo-user] KDE 4.3.1 query
Faced with the KDE 4 steamroller rumbling & shuddering ever closer, I've been trying out the 4.3.1 versions of apps I frequently use. I have not installed the desktop management part of KDE, only the apps themselves & whatever deps they require: Fluxbox is my desktop manager of choice. Konsole 4.3.1 -- very much dumbed down from 3.5.10 ; big problem: it seems impossible to predetermine window size; result: back to 3.5.10 & be prepared to use Xterm & Xfce's Terminal. Okular 4.3.1 -- usable, but no noticeable improvement on Kpdf 3.5.10 . Konqueror 4.3.1 -- no way to import bookmarks, but they are easily copied from ~/.kde3.5 , as are style sheets; not explored in any depth, but an impression of dumbing down too (this is for the I/net, not local file management); I don't use it much, prefering Firefox for everyday browsing. Kmahjongg 4.3.1 -- my quick relax with my own layout & personal rules (grin); no problem with my layout (simply copy it over), but they've abolished the grid of removed tiles ! no, when i'm relaxing between more important things, I don't want to exercise my memory on such trivia; result: back to 3.5.10 . Gwenview 4.3.1 -- yes, an improvement on the old independent Gwenview, esp the tree menu, but also rendering of images + thumbnails. Krusader 2.0.0 -- my choice for heavy lifting: no noticeable change. I won't comment on the aesthetics of the brave new KDE ... Exactly: I want different sizes for different uses. Xterm does it, Terminal does it, Konsole 3.5.10 did it via command flags, but these have disappeared in Konsole 4.3.1 (try 'konsole --help'). > Also, do you have tried the geometry setting? right click on title, > window specific settings, create profil, put size into profile done. When I right-click on the titlebar, I get a Fluxbox list of options, none of which is "window-specific" nor relates to profil(e)s. Of course, I've tried editing profiles, but it has no effect on size; I also checked Google for 'resizing konsole' & similar. >> Okular 4.3.1 -- usable, but no noticeable improvement on Kpdf 3.5.10 . > that is a joke, right? What is "bookmark editor" ? -- it's not a dependency of Konqueror 4 . My problem -- unlike other people's -- with your responses is that you are typically inaccurate both in content & in English. You are usually amusing, but I suspect that is not your intention. I am genuinely disappointed by KDE 4.3.1 , which I had hoped would be a real step forward given recent KDE PR announcements. Roughly 50 % options in KDE 3 have not been retained in KDE 4 & by now it's not simply that they haven't got around to implementing them: it's clear they don't intend to & are merely concentrating on eye-candy. It's utter madness, but with free software there are alternatives, which I have started to adopt (Fluxbox, Thunar, Terminal). The thumbnails are missing for some images, for which thumbnails appear properly in Gwenview (for) 3.5.10 . I've found the cause: 'properties' says they are 'jpeg', but that their content is 'gif', so changing the extension to '.gif' cures the disorder. [gentoo-user] KDE 4.3.1 : further queries
Thanks for the advice so far. Here are some more obstacles encountered. KDE 4.3.1 is an enormous improvement over 4.2.1 : the apps are stable & basic functions are available. Responses in KDE Bugzilla suggest their devs want to satisfy users: they tend to be "We haven't got there yet but are working on it" rather than "Forget it, get used to it, it's been dropped". The one exception is Konsole, which is a shadow of 3.5.10 , so that I've adopted Xterm & the Xfce Terminal for some jobs. [gentoo-user] Kworldclock & KDE 4.3.1
I asked this before without any response (smile). Kworldclock 3.5.10 is a useful little app, but is absent from 4.3.1 . I've found 2 versions of the problem : KDE bug 184088 , which suggests the problem is Gentoo packaging ; Gentoo forum http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-787140-highlight-kworldclock.html?sid=bc3747cb7a2906acb862ce70e686a936 which refers to Gentoo bug 280834 . A bug search of Gentoo for 'kworldclock' yields 'zarro'. Bug 280834 solves the poster's problem (how to add it to the KDE desktop), but implies that that is how you have to use it in KDE 4 , ie there is no equivalent of running 'kworldclock' in KDE 3 . As I don't (want to) use the KDE 4 desktop (I use Fluxbox instead), this suggests I'm stuck with keeping the KDE 3 version around, if I want a quick + simple way of seeing how the planet is lit up & -- much more important -- finding local time for major cities (I used it recently when needing to phone someone in New Zealand). Is it possible to get Marble to show the effects of Kworldclock ? Is there any other similar app from outside KDE ? -- Xearth shows light/dark, but not current local times AFAIK. [gentoo-user] ASUS EeePC 1000HA : boot query
I've got my new toy to boot from USB with SystemRescue 1.3.1 , which comes up beautifully with Gentoo using 'Altker32' (the 'default' kernel boots into some kind of emergency mode); despite what the intro help says, the desktop manager is Xfce, which is started via 'wizard' & offers basic useful apps, eg Terminal Emelfm Firefox Geany Gparted . There's 1 problem : you hold F2 down to get BIOS, then use Esc for a boot menu (you have to go in/out of BIOS first). However, this doesn't work when I first switch the machine on : M$ XP starts regardless & I have to reboot from there to get BIOS, the boot menu & the USB (I've disabled 'quiet boot' in BIOS, but POST msgs still don't appear). Is this because it takes a few seconds before the USB stick warms up & gets recognised (its light blinks) ? This is important: if that's correct, I can wipe out XP & the machine will still recognise the USB stick & boot, but if the problem is something else (I don't know what it might be), I fear risking an unbootable box without even the M$ option remaining. [gentoo-user] EeePC network problem
I'm stuck in trying to install Gentoo on my new EeePC 1005HA . There seems to be no easily accessible driver for the Ethernet controller, which is 'Atheros AR8132' (shown via 'lspci'). I'm using 'install-x86-minimal-20091020.iso' on a USB stick; it has 2 drivers atl1e/atl1e.ko atlx/atl1.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.30-gentoo-r7/kernel/drivers/net/ , but neither allows me to connect to my ISP, timing out every time. The problem is not the modem, as M$ XP can connect successfully. I've searched for drivers via Google & the Gentoo forum, but I can't compile the one I found, as the Gentoo installer lacks 'make' & the module has to be compiled for the specific kernel there. Also, the pkg -- AR81Family-linux-v1.0.0.10.tar.gz , which is almost the same as l1c-linux-v1.0.0.11-test.tar.gz -- dates from January 2009 , rather a long time ago in computing terms. I also have SystemRescue on a USB, but it doesn't do ADSL. I don't expect to be using the Internet with the netbook, so it's needed only for installing Gentoo. I did 'make oldconfig', looking at the '?' help for each new item & deciding whether to say Y/N as seemed appropriate. There wasn't anything dramatically new, so I went straight on to 'gvimdiff .config .config-', which allows a careful review of all the differences. There seemed to be nothing outstanding, so I went ahead with 'make', copied it by hand into /boot & updated Lilo; there was a problem, which I reported here, re Nvidia-drivers, but I moved up to a new version & then everything worked as expected. [gentoo-user] "deleted inode referenced"
In the course of trying to get X to work on my ASUS 1005HA netbook, I had to power the machine off several times. In the course of this, some damage seems to have occurred to the file system. There are files in /var /tmp which I can't remove: the msg is "EXT2-fs error: ext2_lookup: deleted inode referenced: 16388". I got round the problem by creating new dirs, copying everything else & renaming the dirs, but that leaves me with /bad1 , which I can't remove as it contains a reference to an inode which no longer exists. NB this is not the more common problem of a bad file name, which cb dealt with simply by removing the inode (which still exists). Can anyone help ? BTW is Ext2 the best fs for this machine ? I haven't updated R-fsprogs since 071222, tho' there's a minor revision. Of course, that doesn't mean the stuff in the kernel is that old. It wb a pity if it's not maintained at least till Btree-fs is reliable. Anyway, I've reformatted my partitions to Reiserfs without re-installing (clever, aren't I ? -- big grin). Besides / + /home , I have a big hangar-openspace partition I call /z ( 60 GB ), which is useful for unpacking stuff & has /z/tmp for Emerge to use. I created a dir /z/store3 , then did 'cp -a bin /z/store3' etc for all the dirs in / ; next I used SystemRescue to reformat /dev/hda3 , which is mounted as / , then 'cp -a' everything back again. And it worked !! Similarly for /home & for /z itself (using /store6 ). NB WARNING : if anyone else wants to do this, 'cp -a' is your friend, but be very careful to proof-read all your commands as you do it & use 'du' etc to check that the data really is being copied; some of the copies take a few minutes, but they do get there. So far, I'm very impressed with the ASUS 1005HA & even more with Gentoo, which is perfectly fit for this kind of job. Try a binary distro, run into any kind of problem & what can you do ? Gentoo makes it work ! [gentoo-user] ASUS 1005HA: some strange bugs going around
I've got my netbook basically set up to do what I need, but there are 3 problems remaining, which seem to be fairly basic bugs. (1) I've already mentioned the problem of compiling Lm_sensors. Dale refered to Bug 282261, whose conclusion seems to be to try the latest testing version 3.1.1 , which I will do tomorrow. (2) Fluxbox is working nicely, as it does on my desktop machine ANB3, but I thought I'ld have a look at Xfce, which looks nice in SystemRescue. Xfce opens as root, but not as user ! -- there have been lengthy debates in the Arch forum, which seems to be a different world from Gentoo (smile), but nothing seems to have been resolved. It ought to be a permissions error, but there's no sign where it might be happening. There's an error msg "Module fbcon not found", but that may not be the real problem. (3) Dillo "can't start dpi daemon" (no such problem on ANB3). I can't find anything sensible & have no idea what that daemon mb. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Otherwise, I've installed Gkrellm (incl a battery monitor), Gvim, Feh, Xpdf, Xcalc, Gnumeric, Mirage, Ristretto & Lynx (from its own source); also Thunar (its site tells how to reduce the size of its font) & Terminal (Xfce, same author), which also cb fine-tuned for the netbook.
