[gentoo-user] Nvidia-drivers stopped working
A few days ago I ran my updates and nvidia-settings was updated to 1.0.20070302 All was good until last night. I openen konqueror to browse my home dir and I got a mime-type error and no files displayed. Trying to do konqueror /home/ernie gave me errors that I can't quote but mime types was mentioned again. Assuming that something was just hung up I did top which showed X using 95% cpu Killing java_vm, firefox, kmail and any suspected cpu hogs had no effect so I killed X and attempted to restart it. I got the dreaded "no screens found" error. Nothing in the logs was any more enlightening and a look at xorg.conf showed no recent changes that I could identify. I changed my driver in xorg.conf to "nv" from "nvidia" and X runs, slow as hell but it runs. nvidia-drivers is currently at 100.14.09. I need advice getting this straight. Is there a file where nvidia-settings keeps config data other than xorg.conf? should I update to the masked nvidia-drivers-100.14.11 ? -- Regards, Ernie -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

NO! The newer drivers build but warn of MTRR support lacking on my card. Funny I thought that it was there. It's a gforce4 ti 4200. I had to revert to nvidia-drivers-1.0.9639. I guess the drivers got updated in a previous update and I missed the warnings. Funny it worked for over a week. Thanks for the help. -- Regards, Ernie -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

[gentoo-user] blocking package isn't really there.
I'm trying to emerge kino and show a block by ffmpeg so I # emerge -C ffmpeg and try again and the block is still there. I try calling the package with the version # specified in the block message which tells me that there's no such package. This is getting very frustrating. As I've said, sound works as user "ernie" in all apps except flash.I have sound in flash as root, so the plugin is there. # find / libflashplayer* 2> /dev/null | grep libflashplayer /home/ernie/Desktop/install_flash_player_9_linux/libflashplayer.so /home/ernie/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /home/ernie/.netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/libflashplayer.so /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so # ls -l /home/ernie/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so -rwxr-xr-x 1 ernie users 7040080 Mar 23 22:02 /home/ernie/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so I have device permissions set up properly unless libflashplayer.so uses some device I don't know about. /dev/sound/* are all root:audio and "ernie" is in the audio group. I guess this is obvious because all other audio apps work fine as "ernie". I've been racking my brain and searching for info, but I can't get this working. Please, someone help me out here. [gentoo-user] VLC
I merged vlc using the flags suggested in the gentoo documentation. When I started the merge, I got an unknown atom warning for wxwindows but went ahead with the install. I've got no GUI, though I can run it from the command line. There doesn't seem to be any hot keys. I did some digging and found a reference to wxwindows being changed to wxWidgets temporarily. See line 113 http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/alt/changeset/7045 Emerge -av vlc shows nothing like wxWidgets in the list of flags, but I didn't get the atom warning about it. Is this change permanent? Still in effect? The merge is running now. Hopefully I'll get a GUI. Any thoughts? -- Regards, Ernie -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] VLC
Mia culpa. It looks like there was a problem in my package.use file. I had copied the flage for vlc from an article and got a carriage return in there. I'm building vlc for the 3rd time this should do it. On Wednesday 27 June 2007, a tiny voice compelled Ernie Schroder to write: > I merged vlc using the flags suggested in the gentoo documentation. [gentoo-user] OT: Can't load pictures from forum
Not Gentoo specific but apparently specific to Linux. I belong to several motorcycle forums and since a site upgrade on one of them a while back, clicking on posted thumbnails opens a new window with the .jpg code instead of the larger picture. It is only this one site that does this and it does the same thing in firefox, opera and konqueror. Below is the link from a right click on a thumbnail. Does the code look strange? I'm not a php guy and can't figure it out. http://www.harleyshoptalk.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=8197 -- Regards, Ernie -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Compare the server etc. setting 'TB vs Kmail'. HTH.Rumen Yes, I've run revdep-rebuild several times. Other than some garbage due to openoffice-bin, all is good now. I'm thinking now that somethings were built out of order and I'm now running: # emerge -eD kdepim There are 146 packages in this run so it will take a while to know id this helps. Settings are the same in kmail as in TB. Just to make sure, I deleted both of my accounts on kmail and recreated them. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] need help with kmail
This is just too wierd! I've done all the maintainance steps everyone has suggested, probably several times by now, but kmail still refuses to send email. The good news is Thunderbird is working. Being a creature of habit, I want to get kmail working. Last night I did: # emerge -eD kdepim thinking that this would bring all dependancies in the correct order and I would wake up able to use kmail. No such luck. The only change I've seen so far is kmail has gone back to crashing when deleting failed emails from the outbox. Below is the backtrace from the KDE crash handeler, followed by the Konsole output. Note that the Konsole output complains (when I deleted the failed mail) kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: KDirWatch::removeDir can't handle '/etc/samba/smb.conf' kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: KDirWatch::removeDir can't handle '/etc/security/fileshare.conf' Wy would kmail want to remove smb.conf and fileshare.conf? I checked my emerge log and I had updated gcc and nvidia-kernel on the same day. What I forgot to take into account is that after udating my compiler, (unless, of course I upgraded with the --emptytree flag, I would still be compiling my nvidia-kernel with the old gcc-3.3.x I have a brand new kernel and have recompiled nvidia-kernel. The message will say that there are x number of files in /etc that need updating. # etc-update Will return a list of files that need attention. selecting a file from the list shows differences between the new config file and the old one. generally, files that you haven't manually changed yourself can be safely updated to the newer version. Again, most of the time, for files that you have modified yourself, it is safe to retain your old file after checking to see if there are new features you might want. You will notice that there are several options for accepting the new files. One of them is "-5" which will accept all of the new files without any further action on yout part. This is VERY dangerous! If you're not very sure what you're doing, don't use that option. -- Regards, Ernie -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] OT: Linksys router problems
I updated firmware on my linksys BEFSW11 router yesterday and I cannot receive email, nor access the email provider's website. I've spent about 3 hours on the phone with less that competent tech support people at #1 ntplx.net (email provider) #2 bellsouth.net (ISP) and linksys.com All blame the other guy. Linksys is telling me I need to set up port triggering for email and web surfing. The problem is that my bellsouth email account is un affected as are every other website I try to access. I have, for now, disconnected the linksys and am connected through a hub directly to the DSL modem/router. The problem is gone. I would really like to be able to use the router. The reason that I wanted to update it in the first place was that it would crash a couple of times a week. When this happened, I couldn't even ping it, let alone access it in a browser. [gentoo-user] OT: phpmyadmin
I am just starting to play with php and mysql. I've got mysql working and can log into root accounts using a password. php scripts work on http://localhost. For example, http://localhost/php/index.php in a browser shows a whole lot of info re php, mysql and apache2. However, I can't seem to get phpmyadmin working. Going to http://localhost/phpmyadmin, gives me a window asking for username and password. If I insert my mysql username (root) and root's mysql password, I just get the same box with no error. I've tried adding a small config.inc.php file to /var/www/localhost/htdocs that is configured like so" http://localhost/phpmyadmin/'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'MySQL.localhost'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'root'; $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'password'; $cfg['blowfish_secret'] = '1234'; ?> I restarted mysql and apache2 and still no joy Obviously, I'm missing something, but I can't find anything after many hours of searching that points me in the right direction. I had to delete my previously created tables by doing: # rm -r /var/lib/mysql/* then, after starting mysql, # /usr/bin/mysql_install_db then I could login to mysql, set the root password and run the above script. All is well. I can now run phpmyadmin in the browser at: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/, http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin/ or hostname.domainname/phpmyadmin Only thing left to do is learn how to use all this neat stuff. -- Regards, Ernie -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
