[gentoo-user] fsck.ext3 error (only sometimes)

2006-09-11 Thread PaulNM

Hi all,

I've come across a weird issue. The other day I decided that it's been
a while since I've had a good read/write badblocks run through fsck.ext3
on all my partitions.

The problem is with /dev/hdb1 , normally mounted on my Gentoo system as
/olddeb since it's a small install of Debian that I keep as a backup.

Robotech / # fsck.ext3 -fccv -C 0 /dev/hdb1
e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
ext2fs_block_iterate: Ext2 file too big while sanity checking the bad
blocks inode

Robotech / #

I get the same thing with one -c as well. The partition is unmounted. If
I run it without any bad block check I get:

Robotech / # fsck.ext3 -fv -C 0 /dev/hdb1
e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure

Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity

Pass 4: Checking reference counts

Pass 5: Checking group summary information

   95216 inodes used (19%)
1854 non-contiguous inodes (1.9%)
 # of inodes with ind/dind/tind blocks: 5188/57/0
  636738 blocks used (65%)
   0 bad blocks
   0 large files

   78031 regular files
7459 directories
1326 character device files
4170 block device files
   2 fifos
 364 links
4217 symbolic links (3987 fast symbolic links)
   2 sockets

   95571 files
Robotech / #

"badblocks -nvs /dev/hdb1" seems to run fine, but I am worried about the
"ext2fs_block_iterate: Ext2 file too big while sanity checking the bad
blocks inode" message. Any hits I've found about this has other errors
occurring as well, usually "DriveReady SeekComplete" errors. As a
result, I'm only seeing responses about the other (more serious) errors,
no explanation of this specific message. This is the only partition I'm
seeing this on, no other error messages at all. Hdb 2,3, and 4 are fine
(all ext3).

I remounted /dev/hdb1:
The largest file on it is 71 megabytes. After moving it to another
partition, df -h shows:

FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1 3.7G 2.4G 1.2G 67% /olddeb

Unmounted and tried again, still getting same message.

Any help is appreciated,
Paul NM

And I *could* be a grandfather if only I'd had kids when regular
sane people have them, but I didn't, and now my son's only 9 so
I get to wait another 10 years at least...

But back to topic. Colleen's answer seems to me pretty
representative of why most folk do Gentoo, myself included.
With one extra reason - I'm a total propellor-head and Gentoo
lets me fiddle all day long to my heart's content; and when I
break it, Gentoo lets me fix it.

IIRC, Christel told me that we're currently 332 developers working on it
(roughly).

Isn't there a jumper or two on the circuit board that you should dis/connect
according to the MoBo's manual to effect this? MoBos that don't have either
a BIOS menu choice or a jumper set up and rely on a software hack perhaps
mean that they are not meant to run (reliably) at anything other than default
speeds - on the other hand it may just mean that HP/Dell/etc. were providing
something cheap & cheerful with my granny in mind and couldn't be bothered to
fic their buggy BIOS'. With Gentoo compiling its own software the demands
placed on a machine are somewhat more onerous than that seen by a typical
M$Windoze setup.

But even if you did get it to compile with -X, the concept
doesn't make sense. The whole point of gnome (and gnome-light
is just a minimal subset of that) is to display stuff on the
screen and for that you require X, so leave it in the USE flags
so portage can do the right thing.

Why do you want to do such a thing anyway?

Not a really accurate count though because, while there may be 300 or so

Hi,

did you install portage-2.1.1 ?

Portage has now a new feature, it re-emerges a package when the IUSE
variable has changed :

* In portage-2.1.1, emerge --newuse is now sensitive to changes in IUSE.
* Immediately after upgrade from 2.1, users may notice a significantly larger
* number of packages pulled in by --newuse, but that behavior is normal.
* For additional information regarding this change, please see bugs #116955,
* #144333, #144661, and #146060.

I need this compile a few things actually, mplayer, cinelerra-cvs and
other non-portage software.

Arggghhh, recent baselayout/portage/profile changes strike
again. That's an old location. You need a make.globals - it's
kinda important

Like me you may find it at /etc/make.globals

I also recall recently portage was doing similar things to me -
it was also creating one or two zombies every time it ran.
Consistently, I would see a zombie in top, and emerge would
fail. kill -9 the zombie and emerge would work again. It all
went away suddenly one day, around the timne of the release of
portage-2.1.something

If you're planning to use a remote X server you, you should compile
xorg-server with USE="minimal". Then gnome can link to the libraries it needs
but you don't need to install a complete X server.

Yep, there's where it is:

What shall I do? Manually cp it over to /etc/portage/profile/make.globals?

[gentoo-user] glibc-2.4-rc3 failing on system with 2 glibc's already

2006-09-11 Thread darren kirby
Well, as the title, glibc is failing on me on my server. I have noticed that
in the stack trace there is: "multiple definition of `__libc_multiple_libcs'"
and emerge --info shows glibc-2.3.6-r4 and glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 are both
installed. Not sure why. Not sure even if this is the problem.

My instinct is to unmerge glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 and try again, but the
ominous warning from portage coupled with the fact this is my live mail/web
server is making me hesitant to try this. Any thoughts?

Just wanted some input here before I plunge ahead...

thanks.

PS: I can post the full stack trace if anyone wants to see it...

The Dell motherboard detects the CPU's FSB and sets it that way. The
board officially supports 66/100/133. My Celeron 700 runs at 66FSB,
but I'd like to try 100FSB so my memory will run at full speed and I
can see if the CPU can handle 1050 (10.5x multiplier).

Does anyone know of a way to set the FSB in software?

You probably don't want to add "minimal" to your global USE variable,
use /etc/portage/package.use instead

echo "x11-base/xorg-server minimal" >> /etc/portage/package.use

Don't add it to your global USE flags !
The minimal flag is used by several packages but you only need to activate it
for a single package. You might end up with a seriously impaired system if
you add it to your global flags.

To activate the minimal flag only for x11-base/xorg-server add it
to /etc/portage/package.use

echo "x11-base/xorg-server minimal" >> /etc/portage/package.use

No, leave it where it is, that's the correct new location. It's
where it is on my system, and my emerge works fine.

Try these steps meanwhile if you haven't already:

kill all defunct and old emerge processes, and try emerge again.
With no emerge processes running, delete all _lockfiles
in /var/tmp/portage and try again. Also try 'emerge portage'
itself and see if that fixes it.

in the stable version.
My own laptop which I'm writing this on is just working on the upgrade
and it's looking fine, should be done by tomorrow. And this morning I
started the upgrade on a 132 MHz HPPA machine---it's still at 15% of the

That implies that the error coming from the ebuild is a bug? I mean, it
should recognise the latest location of make.globals.

What do you mean with lockfiles? I've
deleted /var/tmp/portage/wvstreams-4.2.2-r2/work/*

There's no defunct emerge processes, or threads. There's no zombies of any

I recently had trouble with cups too. So I follow this document:

http://localhost:631/sam.html

 and used this portion
of the manual to set up an hp laserjet printer:

Similarly, a HP LaserJet printer using a JetDirect network interface at IP
address 11.22.33.44 would be added with the command:

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LaserJet -E -v socket://11.22.33.44
-m laserjet.ppd ENTER

As you can see, deskjet.ppd and laserjet.ppd are the PPD files for
the HP
DeskJet and HP LaserJet drivers included with CUPS. You'll find a
complete list
of PPD files and the printers they will work with in Appendix C,
 "Printer Drivers".

Then I just go to the /etc/cups dir and manually edit the files as
necessary.
Once that is done, you can use the cups gui admin for some stuff.
Once I get a printer work, I make dated backups so the next time a
cups upgrade
messes things up, I just look at the dated backup:

-rw-r- 1 root lp 255 Sep 7 23:23 printers.conf
-rw--- 1 root root255 Sep 4 22:23 printers.conf.works.4sep06

AFAIR this is harmless, and can be ignored. It is caused, because the files
are installed in a temp-dir and copied over by portage.

but you should use the search funktion of your favorite mail archive, this

Did anybody find xorg destabilize after enabling freetype/type1

My machine freezes up randomly after I activate those two.

Pentium M 1.6
IBM ThinkPad X31
gcc (GCC) 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r1, ssp-3.4.5-1.0, pie-8.7.9)

I had the honor of being tasked by my wife with recovering photos from
the amorphous blob of data left over after some virus persuaded her
Windoze that it was a good idea to dump its memory all over the NTFS
root block. "recoverpics" finds pretty much every JFIF picture that is
in one piece, i.e. not in a fragmented file, no matter what the file
system. At 5k source it could be worth a try:

Yes, because the file is no longer the file portage installed, so it has
no right to remove it.

This generally isn't a problem, because you normally only edit files
in /etc, which are config protected anyway. It arises here because
fix_libtool_files.sh modifies the .la files. One could argue that it is
the responsibility of that script to check the md5/mtime information and
update it.

Thanks Matthias,

How do I install it manually? install tells me:

# install
install: missing file operand

So, I ran:

# install recoverpics.c recoverpics

Which didn't complain. What next? How do I run it? Is there any

[gentoo-user] [OT whois and dig] to get an address

2006-09-11 Thread reader
A bit off topic here but I'm getting mail into my spam traps about
Chase bank account being frozen etc etc. Please go here and give all
your private personal information into the little box.

This particular one is semi slick since it has managed to be injected
into newsguy with out showing more than one earlier Recieved header.

I've done a little digging (no pun intended) on the address with `dig'
and jwhois, but I'm not getting a phone number or email address to
report this to.

Can someone coach me a bit how to ascertain who is in charge for this
block of addresses:

equery files cups |grep sam.html

This is quite a different setup that what I'm asking about. It is
apparently not related to smb protocol. The printer in question on my
end does not have its own IP address but is connected via USB to a
windows xp machine. Must therefore be accessed via smb and samba.

Did you recognize something in the log output I posted that looked
similar to something you've seen?

First thing that i see is:
where the hell is /dev/sda1? Yes, there should be a FAT partition on
that xD card, but it's not there.

So first step:
Re-create a primary FAT partition without formatting it (for example use
cfdisk)

Maybe your are abled to mount the FAT partition after you "fixed" the
partition table. Well, "fixing" it basically means: delete it, and
create a new one. Typically, the FAT partition simply comsumes the whole
disk. There should be a fair chance, that (c)fdisk chooses the same
start/end-sectors for the partition like any other tool (including the
camera).

Good luck!

? I've been using just normal ntfsprogs on my Kubuntu Desktop. That
works just fine. It even scans the ntfs drive on boot to clean it
(something that is really needed - whoever wrote the ntfs driver for
windows needs to be slain with torture for the sloppy job he or she
did!)

It is a bit annoying to have to wait for it to load as it waits for the
scan to finish.

Much more confused than before. I get why I'd want to use unicode, but
the instructions on how to do that were outdated or for a setup other

aaahhh, I don't think you want to do this... My (perhaps limited)
understanding tells em that running a 66MHz chip at 100MHz blow it sky
high.

Although according to this web site[1] that's ok for celerons. I'd make
sure you have some pretty decent cooling though - ie. water cooling, or
move to Alaska.

If all you want to do is run the RAM faster, what you usually have is a
FSB to RAM multiplier (can't remember what it's called - my overclocking
days are long gone :) Which allows you to run the ram at 100 or 133...

> Does anyone know of a way to set the FSB in software?

Not me! My best recommendation would be to buy a really good
overclocking motherboard - one with all these features in the bios. You
should be able to get S370 mbs on ebay for cheap.

I have re-synced a couple times and still no joy at all. My install
can't get pass this because some other packages depends on it. I have
also tried a ton of other mirrors. I used mirrorselect -i and added
them all in and get the same thing. A lot of the mirrors don't have the
file. I even tried getting it from the freedesktop.org website with the
same thing. This seems to work fine on my old install.

What's up with this? Anybody else run into this? Does it need a roach

Ooops, sorry, I tried that too. It keeps giving me the same thing. I
even went to the freedesktop site and downloaded it myself and it still
does the same thing. I also deleted the directory x11-misc/util-macros
and then synced again. Same thing.

Any more ideas??

Thanks for the reply though. I tried so many things that I forgot that
one. May have forgot some more too.

Huh??

$ wget

$ md5sum util-macros-1.1.0.tar.bz2
bc06eebd94b6e65405c2d5b1e479fea8 util-macros-1.1.0.tar.bz2

That matches expected md5sum above...

Is the CDROM an older unit? If so, can you burn the install ISO on
another CD *AT THE SLOWEST SPEED IT WILL DO*? I have to do this at home
because my emergency backup machine is a 1999 Dell and the CDROM on it
will only read maximum 12X speed.

I have re-synced a couple times and still no joy at all. My install
can't get pass this because some other packages depends on it. I have
also tried a ton of other mirrors. I used mirrorselect -i and added

[gentoo-user] Real CPU speed

2006-09-11 Thread Grant

How can I determine my current CPU speed? I have a Celeron 700 that
should be running at 1050 if I insulated one of its pins correctly.
All of the information I can find on determining CPU speed is related
to mobile speedstep processors and mine is a desktop CPU.

[gentoo-user] Not even a sound of silence...(longish)

2006-09-11 Thread Meino Christian Cramer
Hi,

recently I did a "emerge -e system; emerge -e world".

Apart from some applications, which dont want to compile with
the new system -- now based on gcc-4.1.1 -- everything works fine.

(Before emergeing I did a full image backup of the "old" system on
another harddisk of the same model (dd ...). )

But I have no sound anymore...

 I checked for the follwing:
 PC-BIOS: Onboard sound is enabled.
diffing old and new etc: Inserting alsa devices again with
 /etc/modules.d/alsa
Volume is up (alsamixer and speakers)
Speakers have power and ready to play.
Plug is connected to the correct "outlet" (weong word?...sorry I am
only german...)

Hi Grant,

 try

 cat /proc/cpuinfo

which will give you a hint, what the Linux kernel thinks what you CPU
is and with which clock it runs.

Hmm, can you post the output of "amixer scontents".

And 2 more questions: what version of alsa-lib do you have (emerge -pv
alsa-lib), and are you using the in-kernel drivers or the alsa-drivers

Cheese, I'm learning something. I already knew that it would not delete
files in /etc/ and now I know why. LOL I never put the two together
before you said that. Who knows, maybe in 20 years I'll be a dev. O_O
I'll be too old then though.

I'm working on a fresh install on another hard drive now. That will
clear out some cruft. I copied my make.conf file and one other config
file and that is it. Oh, the kernel's .config. I knew it was something
outside of /etc.

Thanks for clearing up my muddy water. Care to help with the rest now? LOL

That is VERY common. I do wish they would put that at half way or
something. At least we would get a whisper from it then.

I downloaded it with Seamonkey though. I saved it to my Desktop then
used Konqueror are root to copy it over. It won't let a lowly user
named dale do it. ;-)

Whatever I did, I was consistent about it. I did it about 10 or 12
times, the wrong way apparently.

Me confused, but it is compiling though. < thumbs up here >

I still would prefer if it was stored in a log file somewhere so that if I
ever stumple upon it I can see where it came from... Haven't gotten around to
filing any bug about that though.

/mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles == /usr/portage/distfiles ?

Well, the /etc thing is generally more due to CONFIG_PROTECT - it won't
delete files from /etc regardless of whether or not you've modified
them, because they're under CONFIG_PROTECTion.

[gentoo-user] Gentooism

2006-09-11 Thread Iain Buchanan
No offence or copyright infringement intended, but I found this funny:

Let us pray...

Our system, who art on raised tile,
Hallowed be thy OS.
Thy portage come, thy emerge be done,
On servers, as it is on workstations.
Give us this day, our daily sync,
And forgive us our broken ebuilds,
As we forgive those who break ebuilds against us.
Lead us not into dependency frustration,
But deliver us from rpm evil.
For thine is the make.conf, the USE flags,
And the profile forever...
Gentoo.

Yea, I'm doing a install on another drive. I mounted it at
/mnt/gentoo. It makes copy and paste easier. :D I'm trying to get a
clean start. This is a three year old install and I have learned a
lot. Still have a lng way to go though. Care to help me a bit
more? LOL

I also always add the -v to rm. I like to see it do it, especially the
second time around.

[gentoo-user] Question about arts.

2006-09-11 Thread Dale
Hi,

As some may already know, I'm doing a new install on another hard
drive. I have a question about arts. I have this for a sound card:

> 01:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1
> (rev 0a)

Do I need to compile KDE with arts support with this card? I never have
started alsasound before, if that has anything to do with it, and sound
works fine.

I'm about to start the big KDE compile and was wondering before I started.

Thanks.

Hmmm, while I am at it, what's the difference between xorg-x11 and
xorg-server? I hope I didn't emerge the wrong one.

xorg-server is a result of the new modular X.
xorg-x11 depends on xorg-server, so you emerge xorg-x11, which
then emerges the X-server proper

Uh oh. I hope I can go back and emerge xorg-x11 and it all works OK.
