2007-04-18 Thread Rainer Jung

Hi,

I have a patch for the 5.0/5.5 Manager webapp, which I could port to 6.0
if there is some interest in it. Since Rémy was recently giving
additional value to the manager webapp in 6.0, this patch could fit very
well.

I described it's functionality and use some time ago. The mail is
archived at

http://marc.info/?l=tomcat-dev&m=114125602727531&w=2

Feedback welcome.

Regards,

Rainer

Re: mod_jk on i5/OS v5R4

2007-04-18 Thread Henri Gomez

Well I add to remove the JkWorkersFile directive to make mod_jk start
and have some debug.

I suspect the problem is that in the first stage of init the user
profile on i5/OS is different than the real user profile in the second
stage.

This profile didn't have access to JkWorkersFile and so mod_jk fail to
load the WorkersFile and report as error in first stage.

Question :

- How could we determine that we're in the first stage ?

- Could 'relax' file access check for instance in the first stage to
avoid file access problem on i5/OS ?

Regards and thanks again

Nope, that's correct. Both config passes happen on the single, main
process and thread. THEN following the second pass, processes are
forked off, and the threads created in each process. THAT is the
unix world of httpd.

On Windows, both passes happen in both the parent and child processes,
the parent is actually does not pass its config via fork() to the
children.

Summary: Connectivity problems unexpect shutdown of Apache after
installing KB931784 and KB932168
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.0.28
  Platform: All

Dear,

OS Windows 2003 Standart edition
Apache version 5.0.28
Application Peregrine ServiceCenter 6.1.3.

First urgent problem.
After installing the following patches:
KB931784
KB932168

The Web application shutdown unexpectly or is given a error page, when restart
the service in the Windows Service Console application refused to start.
Only a hard reboot can fix this problem.
This happened frequently as of the patch day on Saturday.

As follow up for this problem, when we restart the complete server with a RDP
connection it seems to be going well.
RDP connection will get disconnected but Server will not come up again, when I
look into it with IPMI console I see that the server is not rebooted completely.

I upgraded to version 5.0.30 but it seems to be still in beta status and we are
not be able to use application in beta status.

Because of the URL it is a internal URL in Philips I am not be able to provide
you a link.

IIRC there were at some time similar probs with mod_ssl which also handles its
own log files;
if mod_ssl works on i5/OS probably you can find the trick there in the code...?

just an idea...

Good idea but the SSL support on i5/OS is not mod_ssl (specific IBM code)

This will not be addressed (toURI().resolve is useless, and getInputStream for a
folder is a proprietary capability). When running Tomcat over a regular file
based environment, it will return file: URL, but if you keep to normal URL
manipulation, you may use it over non file based repositories.

Ok, the lack of directory listing support i understand.

But as for the URI.resolve... i do not understand.
Shouldn't a URL be URI "compatible"... the error happens because the
getResource returns one of these: "jndi:/servername//WEB-INF/"
shouldn't it be more like "jndi://servername/WEB-INF/" as most URLs,
it makes sense and URIs would work fine.

And i'am running this over a "a regular file environment", bellow is the HOST
element that I'm using in server.xml.

[ANN] Apache Tomcat JK 1.2.22 Web Server Connector released

2007-04-18 Thread Mladen Turk

The Apache Tomcat team is pleased to announce the immediate availability
of version 1.2.22 of the Apache Tomcat Connectors.

It contains connectors, which allow a web server such as Apache HTTPD,
Microsoft IIS and Sun Web Server to act as a front end to the Tomcat web
application server.

This version of mod_jk is principally a bug and security fix release.
See http://tomcat.apache.org/connectors-doc/miscellaneous/changelog.html
for a complete list of changes.

Source distribtions can be downloaded from an
Apache Software Foundation mirror at:

http://tomcat.apache.org/download-connectors.cgi

Binary distributions for a number of different operating systems and
web servers can be downloaded from an
Apache Software Foundation mirror at:

http://tomcat.apache.org/download-connectors.cgi

Documentation for using JK with Tomcat 3.3, 4.1, 5.0 and 5.5
can be found at:

http://tomcat.apache.org/connectors-doc/

Thank you,

Ok, I know that :), because when i use winstone server (that does not jndi) over
the same webapp i get a "file:" URL from getResource...

But the problem is that the jndi URL returned has the TWO SLASHES after and not
before the server name, dont't know about jndi protocol but i think that this
must be plain wrong because all URLs i've seen have the TWO SLASHES before the
server name and not after.

Would you please give me a better explanation... I still believe this is a bug.

http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42163

Summary: Subfolders taken as applications by Automatic
Application Deployment
   Product: Tomcat 6
   Version: 6.0.10
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This had me stumped for a few hours today...

In server.xml, when a Host has deployOnStartup="true" or autoDeploy="true", it
seems that Tomcat is taking all folders within the appBase to be separate
applications, whether or not they have a WEB-INF/web.xml. This problem happened
for me when there was only one Context - the application within appBase. I'm
not sure if it happens when multiple contexts are defined.

So, for example, lets say you have an application with the following in the root
directory:

index.jsp
/subdir
/subdir/index.jsp
/WEB-INF
/WEB-INF/web.xml

There's no problem accessing http://mydomain.com/index.jsp (or any other page
within the main directory). However, if you try to access
http://mydomain.com/subdir/ or anything within that subdirectory, the request
won't get to your application code, as Tomcat will assume that the request is
for an application deployed in /subdir (an application which doesn't exist).
I've found one of two things happening:

1. If the URL doesn't map to a real file e.g. /subdir/madeupURL: Tomcat just
returns a 404 error.
2. If the URL does map to a real file e.g. /subdir/index.jsp: Tomcat will log a
WARN "Internal Error: File /WEB-INF/web.xml not found", and try to execute the
file at /subdir/index.jsp (in my case failing with a misleading error because
the index.jsp file relies on stuff in the application classpath...).

Basically the problem seems to be that the check for a WEB-INF/web.xml isn't
happening properly. So subdirectories are getting labelled as applications even
if they don't have a WEB-INF/web.xml.

The workaround is easy: set the Host attributes deployOnStartup="false" and
autoDeploy="false" in server.xml.

Cheers,
Martin

2007-04-18 Thread Rainer Jung
I'm a little narrow on time at the moment, but I did a quick port of my
old 5.0 patch to 6.0 head.

I didn't yet test the 6.0 port (nor build it), but you might get an idea
about the amount of things the patch touches. My original 5.0 patch was
used quite some time.

I won't insist on URL/action the feature can be called by. Originally it
was an extension to /sessions for both the Manager and the HTML Manager.
Since now you added nice detailed sessions functions to /sessions, it
would either be another URL or a sub action. To make the patch simple, I
simply again occupied /sessions and put the detailed session
management under another URL (mostly because it wasn't there in the
Manager).

If there is some basic interest in it, I would test and polish it.

The patch is at:

http://people.apache.org/~rjung/patches/tomcatManagerSessionExpireCodePatch.txt

An old docs patch against 5.0.28 (just to get an idea) is:

http://people.apache.org/~rjung/patches/tomcatManagerSessionExpireDocsPatch.txt

I think this feature is not obsoleted by the new detailed session
administration, because it allows a statistical view and a simple mass
expiration by idle time. For me it looks like a good fit to the new
management of individual sessions.

Rainer

When you wrote "toURI().resolve is useless"...
I've searched a bit and that's not correct, since all URLs are URIs
(http://www.google.com/search?q=%22all+URLs+are+URIs%22) using toURI().resolve
should work and be useful.

at the URI java class documentation explains the following format:
[scheme:][//authority][path][?query][#fragment]

and not: [scheme:][/authority//][path][?query][#fragment]

In "jndi:/servername//WEB-INF/" the server name is actually part the of the
path, i tested it and...

URL url = context.getResource("/WEB-INF/");
url.getHost();
// returns ""
url.getPath();
// returns "/servername//WEB-INF/"

I'm reopening the bug, at least till someone confirm that that's way is supposed
to be.

It should be obvious that there's something wrong if you map somehow harcode
mapping of the host's appBase as the root webapp, and leave autodeployment
enabled. What do you expect to be autodeployed exactly ?

The actual workaround is to not use webapp deployment hacks (Context elements
are still allowed in server.xml due to certain use cases; however I have the
feeling an empty - or equivalent - docBase should be forbidden or at least cause
a very visible warning).

I would not expect OS patch such as these to have any impact on Tomcat. The JVM
should insulate Tomcat from such issues and therefore I do not believe this is a
Tomcat issue.

An upgrade to the latest Sun JVM may help.

Since it appears you take security issues seriously you might also want to
consider the unpatched vulnerabilities in Tomcat 5.0.x. See
http://tomcat.apache.org/security-5.html for details. Even with 5.0.30, there
are at least 3 important vulnerabilities. An upgrade to the latest 5.5.x would
resolve these.

If you need further assistance with this issue please use the Tomcat users
mailing list.
