DAT Drive

2003-02-22 Thread Webmaster
Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase a good but "low" priced SCSI DAT drive. Can anyone
suggest a make/model DAT drive that will work fine with Debian Woody 3.0r1
powerpc.

Thanks,

Kevin

Greetings!

This is a courtesy letter, to let you know that I have included a link
to your website. This link can be found at:

http://www.supercomputer.org/Links/index.html

My supercomputer.org site is dedicated to bringing supercomputer
power to the average person. I have founded this upon the belief that
most people don't understand how cheaply they can harness this power;
and I hope that my site can speed this realization up - by covering
exactly what it takes to build one's own supercomputer, and how
straightforward and cheap this is.

For example, the price of a Gigaflop fell by a factor of 4 in 1998,
not the expected factor of 2! This puts supercomputer power within
reach of the average person, and I discuss exactly how to do this.

My site is also dedicated not only to open-source, but open
communication as well. I have personally believed in the open source
approach for over twenty years (long before it became popular), and
have helped it's proliferation in my own small way.

I'm hoping to have this site fully operational this week; and I wanted
to send you an advance courtesy notice.

If you would like to include a link to my website, please feel free to
do so.

Regards,

Re: XF86Setup on Debian2.0 - help

1998-11-03 Thread WebMaster
The dselect screen is divided in three parts

the top part is the one u describe with the list of packages, as your cursor
moves thru each item is highlited.

the b lue line in the middle gives u the status of the package highlited,
i.e whether it is on your system and whether it is install. It also tells u
your selection (i.e. if u want it installed) and your previous choices (i.e.
if it was a purge or what)

the bottom part gives you a description of the package highlited

hope it helps.

Re: XF86 config - help

1998-11-03 Thread WebMaster

hi all

I have recently installed debian 2 on my PC and after a bit of
tribulation and hours FTPing I got it working :)

I was playing around in Xwindows and there was an option on
the menu for XF86 config and I thought I'd click on it and
see what'd happen.  There was a lot of disk activity and Xsysinfo showed a
very busy kernel, at times up to 100%, for a while.  However nothing else
visible happened.

the next time I switched the puter on everything works fine
until login time.  Xwindows starts, but I don't get a login window and
nothing happens apart from that grey screen.

I usually boot up using Loadlin from my CD.  Are there
any option that will let me bypass the automatic xwindow load or any way I can
get to a normal shell and log in?  Also, would anyone have any idea of what
happened and how I can sort it out?

TIA

I want to merge two Linux installations into one

1998-11-10 Thread webmaster
This is my situation:

/dev/hda1 200 mb for Winblows
(required because Linux does not support my SCSI card SYM 53c416)
/dev/hda2 32 mb swap
/dev/hda3 800 mb Debian 2.0 (new install)
/dev/hda4 1 gb RH 5.1

I would like to have just Linux Debian 2.0 installed, preserving my RH
/home.
And I would like to have /usr and /tmp (and I'm thinking about /var...
on /dev/hda4)

I know that I may delete /dev/hda3 and /dev/hda4 partitions and create a new
bigger /dev/hda3, but I prefer, if possible, to act as above.

It is possible to do what I'm dreaming?
How may I adjust my /etc/fstab?

[webmaster@weitzmann.it: debian 2.0 problems (hamm release)]

1998-11-11 Thread webmaster

Hi!
First of all thanks to the guys who helped me to merge RH installation into
debian. It worked! :-)

I have two problems:
1) I receive a 'command not found? when I try to launch fdformat...
Does this exist under debian? Which package should I install?
2) I tried to setup X with XF86setup and xf86config, but when I launch X I
get some fast writings and a black screen and the system hangs up (I reset
it with ctrl-alt-del).
I have a ATI Rage II+ SVGA video card with 2MB memory.
Under RH 5.1 X worked fine...

please help... :-)

I started it with startx. This morning I tried also xdm but I had the same

reboot. No other consoles do work.

Thank you. I've downloaded it there. The reason for me to use it is
because a week ago I changed our RAID-Server from SuSE to Debian and I
don't know what else to use as non graphical mail client.

Yes, that's what I think to. If I want to use the graphical login later
it is easy to uncomment the line. At the moment I use VNC to
administrate my server over a remote login, works fine.

RAID mounting at bootup

2000-02-13 Thread webmaster
Hi there,

again a question form someone how has changed from SuSE to Debian:

- after building my RAID-Array I need to know how to mount it
automatically at bootup? In SuSE there is a file in
"/sbin/init.d/boot.local" where I can place my own commands which are
run at bootup time. The path might be similiar to "/etc/init.d" but I
can't find any script which compares with this named above.

Could anybody help?
Thanks,

Uwe

Directory colors in console / xterm

red, any directory in blue, and so on

Thanks in advance,

Hui, I've got it. There where lines missing in /etc/services:

afbackup 2988/tcp
afmbackup 2989/tcp

Look at your "/etc/conf.modules" there must be something like:

options ne io=0x320 irq=5

Here you can place you NIC, if you know the right type.

Ok, I think your right, because it could be possible that some daemons
need a network card to work properly. All of our computers which are
running Linux have a card, because they are connected in a network. I
have never tried to setup a computer with Linux but without NIC.

So I think there are only two ways to stop an unnecessary network card
form starting up at bootup.

1) Start the installation program from CD and remove the unwanted modul

2) Deactivate any unwanted startup job in "/etc/init.d/" and you can
later activate it if you want. There are several files in know which
must be stoped from starting network jobs.

/etc/init.d/netstd_init
/etc/init.d/netstd_misc
/etc/init.d/network

Am I right?

Re: Debian Stretch: Problems with installation - computer froze

2017-06-20 Thread webmaster

Hi,

had similar problem with debian9. After basic installation I installed
serveral services und system haltet while running apt-get install.

We're running debian as virtual machines on ESX 6.5.

So, I've figured out, when you install a brand new Server together with
ESX6.5 mode and vmxnet3 network-card, system stops when I try to install
programs with apt-get install.

For testing purposes I've just installed a brand new server with ESX5.5
mode and e1000 virtual network card and everything worked fine for now.

Hope that helps!

Regards,

Jo.

upgrade to linux-image-3.9.1 breaks nvidia proprietary driver

2013-06-22 Thread CHK Webmaster
Hi,

I write here cause I'm not sure where report this issue. It happens when
upgrading my system via apt-get. The upgrade includes
linux-image-3.9.1-amd64 but does not include nvidia-kernel-3.9.1-amd64
in which depends the nvidia proprietary driver.

So the result was a X system breaks, that cannot be loaded cause X.org
not found the nvidia module. The issue can be solved installing manually
the related nvidia-kernel package.

Any comment about how can this issue be reported?

Thanks,

Chk
