If you are only after cmd line browsing then lftp might be an option. It
gives you the feel of being directly on that ftp via a bash (incl. tab
completion, pager, ...).
It is available as a debian package.

apt-get upgrade confusion.

2004-03-16 Thread Rolf
Hello
Just when I thought I had my head around the apt-get mechanism when dealing
with a mixing of stable and testing (and unstable) packages, this problem
turns up.

Sources list contains stable and testing and unstable references.
/etc/apt/preferences contains 3 pins:

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=stable
Pin-Priority: 900
Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=testing
Pin-Priority: 400
Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 50
if I do an apt-get update everything goes smoothly, if then an apt-get
upgrade, a miscellaneous bunch of packages want to get upgraded to the
testing version.

The only logical answer is that some package install I have done requires
these updated versions and so it is wanting to it.

But the system is working fine, the only packages I've recently added work
fine, apt-get check reports no problems. apt-cache policy package-name says
sensible things.

If it is the case that these package versions are required due to some
other dependency or relationship, how do I find out what that is?

If not (a) how can I find out why it wants to do this and (b) how do I stop
it, unless it is recommended that I let it do it?

Many thanks.

rolf.

suidperl

2004-04-07 Thread rolf
Help!

I just upgraded a few things on an i386 box that is mixed stable/testing but
pinned to stable. After the upgrades openwebmail stopped working and I was
able to figure out that it is because suidperl is broken now.

Attempting to run suidperl from the commandline gives the error "suidperl
needs fd script" which is the same error that appears in the apache logs.

I have trawled the net and cannot find an explanation for this, does anyone
know what or where fd script is?

Help

it was easy to remove the file.

  rm -i Backupfiles/--exclude=files.txt

You have to check that you got the appropriate filesystem modules loaded.
Or compiled the filesystem support into the kernel.
I don`t know what cd you are trying to mount but perhaps it is one from
the microsoft world where you could be needing vfat/joliet support.
Check out the available filesytem types in the kernel config.

You want to use a software that can do NetworkAdressTranslation & Port
forwarding.
That basically meansAll traffic coming from your lan goes to your linux
gateway. There the ip-adress is rewritten as beeing 192.168.1.1 and the
datagrams are sent out to the net. Say the packets then go to a web
server, the webserver in return sends some packets to your internet gateway.
Now comes the tricky part. Your gateway must know to what ip on your
local net the packets must go. It does this based on the ports the
request from your client in the lan came from.
ipmasq was in older kernels the software that did this.
Now it is called ipchains.
There is some quite good documentation out there now including various
howtos and tutorials on that topic.
Cheers, Rolf

Why are you using insmod. Try a depmod -a to recalculate the module
dependencies and then a modprobe snd-trident.
Then you can be sure that all modules you need will be loaded.

If it has a JetDirect card, you can access the print engine at port 9100.
I prefer the lprng-package wich allows the following entry:

mylaser:\
lp=laserjet%9100:\
sd=.
if=
(etc)
where laserjet is the hostname of the network card. Note that the lpr,
lpc, lpq, lprm, lpd binaries must be suid root to access privileged
originating ports, which are required by the JetDirect Cards.

The above printcap entry is doing well for a LaserJet IVSiMX and a
LaserJet III, both equipped with JetDirect's.

Hi,

I had a similar problem (using gs and magicfilter). I found that
ghostscript crashed while converting the PS-file to PCL. The effect was
that lpq said "all xxx bytes printed" but the printer remained silent and
no errormessages were generated. You might try to call the gs-commandline
for magicfilter from shell to see if gs hangs and fiddle with the drivers
or additional gs-switches to get it working.

Hi,
I'd recommend the lprng package.

1) Install lprng
2) assign an ip-address/name to the jet-direct device
(e.g. netprint.my.domain/192.168.1.100) and add it to /etc/hosts or
your nameservice database (remember to restart named ;)
3) Configure your jetdirect printserver according to its docs, or:
Look up its MAC-Address in the documentation,
do an "arp -s netprint "
telnet to netprint and configure it
3) put an entry in your /etc/printcap
netprint:\
:lp=netprint.my.domain%9100:\
:other-options-e.g.-input-filters/spool-dirs-et-cetera:
4) start/restart lprng

The JetDirect cards listen to tcp port 9100, and you can access the
printing engine by just forwarding the printing stuff to this port
(for example netcat can be used to do this together with stock bsd lpd,
but lprng supports the port argument directly as shown above and has a
number of additional nice features that bsd lpr lacks).

Rolf

Help please: /dev/printer disappeared

1997-07-01 Thread Rolf Obrecht
Hello,

Due to my impatience, I purged the old "base"-package after upgrading to
1.3 (it was listed as "obsolete" in dselect) without looking at it's
contents first :-(

Unfortunately, it contained all(?) device files in /dev; as a result,
the machine didn't boot anymore since it was "unable to open an initial
console". Booting from rescue disk, mounting the harddrive to /target and
extracting the previously (on a different machine) generated tar file
containing the device-files solved the problem, but: /dev/printer still
doesn't exist.

Calling "MAKEDEV printer" only gives me "MAKEDEV: out of space for
devices".

HOW can I re-create this socket?? (I would like to be able to print
some urgent and important files, but without /dev/printer.)

Any help appreciated

Thanks to all who replied, but I'm still unable to print.
Linking /dev/lp0 to /dev/printer didn't solve the problem.
MAKEDEV is working now, but "MAKEDEV printer" doesn't generate
/dev/printer (as I believed), but /dev/lp[0-3].

On a clean Debian machine, I get the following:

otherhost> ll /dev/log /dev/printer /dev/lp*

srw-rw-rw- 1 root root0 Jun 27 11:54 /dev/log
crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 0 Jan 3 1997 /dev/lp0
crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 1 Jan 3 1997 /dev/lp1
crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 2 Jan 3 1997 /dev/lp2
crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 3 Jan 3 1997 /dev/lp3
srwxrwxrwx 1 root root0 Jun 27 11:54 /dev/printer
^
So /dev/printer is a socket like /dev/log, not a link. tar'ing
/dev/printer and extracting it converts it to a FIFO (permissions
prwxrwxrwx). I can't figure out why :-(
^
My machine, with dev/lp0 linked to /dev/printer, shows the following
behaviour:

myhost> lpc stat

lp:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
1 entry in spool area
no daemon present

myhost> lpc start all
lp:
printing enabled
lpc: connect: No such file or directory
couldn't start daemon

myhost> ps -aux | grep lpd

root 155 0.0 0.3 840 120 ? SJun 27 0:01 /usr/sbin/lpd

I think lpc produces the connect error because the SOCKET /dev/printer
is missing.

Does anybody have any idea how to create this socket? I've looked around
on my system, but could'nt find anything like "mksocket" or similar.
mknod only supports FIFO's, Character and block devices. I'm stuck :-(

Thanks
Rolf

Ufff, problem solved !!!

Thanks to Allan Black I now understand the whole thing a bit better
(hopefully).

Restarting lpd didn't help; but rebooting the machine re-created my lost
socket :)

The only problem I still have to deal with is to cool down those users
who got logged out without warning; but that is my private thing...

Again, thanks to all who helped!

Hi Allan,
first of all many thanks for your excellent explanation.
Unfortunately, removing /dev/printer and killing /restarting lpd does not
create a printer socket. Would a reboot be more helpful? Then I'd have to
wait until Saturday, because the machine acts as an application server for
our HP-UNIX-machines :-(

Or should I re-install the lpd-package? What do you think?

Thanks a lot

Re: How do I have serveral computers and have only one data?

1997-09-03 Thread Rolf Obrecht

Look at .../stable/binary/net/nfsroot-x.deb
This package allows you to have one master machine and slave machines who
boot over the network. The slave machines must have a kernel which
supports booting NFS and mounting the root filesystem over NFS (custom
kernel, recompile necessary.)

Sorry, I have no pointer to oleo doc's; I also dont't use oloe because of
the lack of documentation; but perhaps you should give "xspread" a try.
It's based on the terminal driven "sc" spreadsheet and has IMHO sufficient
docs.

I see the same problem. At the office, I upgraded from 1.1 to 1.2.1 and
Xdm cant read its Xresources, complains about the "cpp" and starts
xconsole in non-iconic mode; at home, I did a fresh installation of 1.2.1
and there is the same problem (even worse: xdm doesn't start xconsole at
all).

I have no idea how to fix this. Help greatly appreciated.

Look at http://www.stardiv.de/download/sites/README.staroffice !

It tells you that StarOffice needs Motif2.0 Libs, which are _NOT_
included. You have to buy them for real money.

The guys at StarDivision are considering making a version with statically
linked Motif :) but "...cannot promise any release date for these
versions..." :-(

Hope that helps

on unix/dos there is a tool out there called dos2unix and unix2dox

Hi,
I recently did a dist-upgrade potato->woody.
Since then I am not able to use my alt-gr(right alt) key anymore.
I checked with xkeycaps read docs and all.
My alt-gr now produces:

but on my german keyboard I cannot get any of @| and so on.
I had to switch to U.S.
Anyone knows of a cure?

Check out /usr/src/linux/Documentation/isdn

Re: Bar Code Scanner in Linux

2000-02-05 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
It depends on what bar code scanner you are trying to use.
There are barcode scanners that get inserted beetween the keyboard and the
computer. You can configure these type of scanners usually through reading
in config instructions in form of barcode supplied by the manufacturer.
They then simply send the barcode translated to characters to the computer
just as if you had entered it with the keyboard. So if you use such
scanners you are not going to have any troubles.

Thats why linux is fast. And if you need more memory for applications it

Re: DVD movie hardware requirements

2001-04-28 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
you could have chances to get dvds working ok if you use a different
software. I currently have PIII-450 w/256Mb and xine is ready to play dvds
just perfect since quite some time. My gfx card is a G400 with 32Mb video
ram tho. Anyway checkout xine.sourceforgge.net and
xine.cjb.net. Installation is quite painless and it works *very*
good. Important performance factors are the X version (X4 here) and Xv
too. Also using raw devices gives some performance gain. All that tuning
measures are provided on those websites and you can use the "Wiki Wiki
Web" on www.linuxvideo.org as well for some tuning tips. After applying
all these tuning steps my CPU is now at ~ 60% load while playing dvds
seamlessly.

Re: apache doubt

2001-05-19 Thread Rolf Schillinger
Hi,
it depends on what you are trying to do. This message normally means that
the directory you wanna access (if you just do http://localhost/ it is the
DocumentRoot in httpd.conf) doesn`t have a index.html or whatever type is
configured in DirectoryIndexes in httpd.conf and additionally the Option
Indexes directive is not set for that directory. If this is set for the
dir in question apache will return a directory listing.

Re: ((a-b)^2)'

2001-05-19 Thread Rolf Kleinknecht

(0) f(a, b) = square( diff( a, b) )

vermöge
square : IR -> IR
square( x) := x^2

diff: IR x IR -> IR
diff( a, b) := a - b

( wieso?)
(2) Im( square|[e, f] ) = max( e^2, f^2) für beliebige e <= f aus IR
( Beachte den Verlauf der Quadratfunktion!)
(3) Im( square|[-e,e] ) = [0, e^2] für e >= 0
( Sonderfall (2) )
(4) Im( f|[c,d]x[c,d])
= Im( square(diff([c,d], [c,d]))nach (0)
= Im( square([c - d, d - c])nach (1)
= Im( square([-(d-c),(d-c)])nach (3)
= [0, (d-c)^2]

dvgrab/firewire - partial video & no second download

2011-04-11 Thread Rolf Brudeseth

I am running into two problems with dvgrab.

Camcorder: Canon Elura 100 (miniDV)

- dvgrab will intermittently not download the entire image (~1 hour video):

$ dvgrab -timestamp -size 0 -format raw

First, try using legacy ieee1394 drivers. I think that you had no
problems using lenny =))). I had same problems using MyBook Studio II
external drive box. System suddenly loose my drive, until reboot. I
got kernel source, compiled it with legacy ieee1394 drivers and
blacklisted new firewire stack. I'm happy.

For those that have encountered the same problem, here was the clue to
resolving it:

https://ieee1394.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Release_Notes

I successfully transferred the content of 30 minidv tapes after I
upgraded to the following backports kernel:

$ uname -r
2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64

In order to expound on the contribution of Karl Vogel:
It gives me two big monitors (I regret that there is no space for a
third one)

a ergonomic mouse and a trackball
and my keyboard(G19) I think is roughly 10 years old, one of the best
investments into computer gear ever.

A normal size notebook or even a netbook is very good if you have to
aktually carry it a lot which you would not like to do with a 17"
monitor notebook.

ide-scsi problem on woody

2003-10-21 Thread [loonyx | rolf joho]
hi there

even though i load the ide-scsi module at boottime, i can not mount my
ide-dvd-writer. since i was perfectly able to do that on earlier
installations, i am asking for hints.

through /etc/modules i successfully load this:
sr_mod
ide-scsi
my complete lsmod can be found at the end of the message.
my bootloader (grub) has this entry (which worked on older setups):
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-smp-woody-xas-1.0-i686 video=matrox:vesa:440 ro
root=/dev/sda6 idebus=66 hdc=ide-scsi

when i try to mount a cdrom i get this (even as root):
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:rolf]# mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/scd0 /cdrom
mount: /dev/scd0 is not a valid block device
i tried other devices like scd1... sg0... no success.

any ideas?

rolf

Re: ide-scsi problem on woody

2003-10-23 Thread [loonyx | rolf joho]
i bet that this works ( assuming the kernel has been told by grub/lilo
the hdc=ide-scsi option )
	mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

and if it does ... make a link
cd /dev ; ln -s ./hdc cdrom ( for reading cd's )
cd /dev ; ln -s ./hdc cdrw ( for writing )
c ya
alvin
well, i could at any time easily mount the cd/dvd in the drive using
/dev/hdc.
the boot-loader is configured properly (hdc=ide-scsi).
the /dev/cdrom link is already there, /dev/cdrw did not bring me much
further:
what i am still missing is the appearance of the drive in the ouput of
#cdrecord -scanbus. so i can not access it for writing cds.

thanks anyway

whyle trying this, i could no longer mount the drive as hdc (of course),

since i am booting my system through an initrd, i am just wondering if i
need to explicitely include ide-scsi on that initrd - early during boot,

unfortunatly, non of the logs has any entries regarding this.

maybe i just build a new kernel...

if i have a look at my /var/log/XF there are entries like those:

Try running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-common", and when asked who has
permission to run X, select Console Users (or something similar to that).

Alternatively, edit /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config so the following line reads
thusly:

thanks for your help, didn't even know about that type of

- set Xwrappers access to console-users
any idea what's going wrong?

I suspect you don't have a default wm configured properly for non-root
users. Create a ".xinitrc" file in a normal user's home dir with the
single line "icewm" (and make sure icewm is installed) and give it a go
and let us know the results.

thanks, i finally figured out that i had wrong permissions set on my
/tmp directory. no idea how this could happen but well, it is running
fine now.

weak perfomance on woody

2003-09-15 Thread [loonyx | rolf joho]
hi there

on my new woody-box i experience some major performance problems. thez
appeared a day a go and i can not link this to any of my activities...

>>> what i observe:
* there is constantly a hell lot of disk-activity.
* starting X/gdm at boot takes around 2 minutes (restarting goes much
faster).
* applications sometimes take ages to start, eventhough right now things
run quite well.
* multiple instances of sendmail (currently 3) are continiously running.
* there might be a problem in delivering root-mail although i have set
up an alias to myself. /var/mail is empty (no mailboxes there) - the
mailqueue is empty right now.
* memory- swap- and disk-usage are in the usual range, hardware seems to
be fine.

>>> what i've done so far:
* i did some monitoring using top and ps (see output below) but their
output seemed pretty 'standard' to me.
* installed exim instead of sendmail but went back as this did not have
any effect.

>>> what i would like to know:
* has anyone any idea how to effectively track those performance-problems?
* how do i monitor disk-activity at all (there is not even a disk-led on
my box)?
* any idea why there are no mailbox-files in /var/mail ?

i know these are a lot of questions and i am not even sure if there is
any relationsship between them. below is the output of top and ps.
thanks for any advice

As far as I know /etc/profile is read by all Bourne Shell derivatives if
you start up a login shell. Did you verify this by logging in from the
console? Or do you login through [xkgw]dm? If you do you might use the
initialization file of your display-manager.

since you are most likely using bash try this file:

/etc/bash.bashrc

what i would like to know myself is where debian sets its own default
PATH which i have before touching any dotfiles...

kernel compilation error

2003-09-15 Thread [loonyx | rolf joho]
hi there

i'm trying to compile a custom 2.4.18 kernel on my woody-desktop using
make-kpkg. after some minutes it exits and throws some lines at me as
quoted at the end of this message. no kernel.deb is made. going through
the docs did not bring me much further.

### what i did:
cd kernel-source-dir
cp old-2.4.18-config-file .config
# this cleans the config file so it matches the current kernel, right?
make oldconfig
make xconfig

What kernel are you running?

2.4.18

What SCSI controller?

Adaptec 39160 (disks attached here)
Symbios Logic 53C8X
What processor are you running?
2 * P II 350 MHZ (currently under an up-kernel)

your input has been very valuable. thanks a lot. i am still working
through it with increasing success, the problem seemed to be related
to some cron-stuff running all at once.
X/gdm still starts extremly slow (1-2 min) after boot, but runs fine
except from that.

apt/preferences docs

2003-09-22 Thread [loonyx | rolf joho]
i am running woody and i am looking for decent documentation for the
debian package management system.

so far i went through the manpages and the debian-handbook. what i am
still missing is a more in-depth description of how to get complete
control from where apt pulls its packages.

lets say i want to run stable but have (very) few packages from
non-debian locations (eg. videolan.org).

is this mainly a /etc/apt/preferences issue...? i think i learned how to
handle stable/testing/unstable, but how to tell apt to get a back-ported
package x from repository y? What do i have to write instead of eg.
'o=Debian' if it is a 3rd party repository? -> (my preferences file can
be found at the end of this message).

however any links to examples and docs regarding this topic would be
highly welcome. maybe there is a good book out there too?

thanks for any help

especially installing debian on a desktop can be a great pain.
imho the switch is definitely worth doing in the long run.

3c920 in 2.4.20; "network unreachable"

2003-06-05 Thread Rolf Erling Robberstad
I installed woody over the internet, configured by the
local DHCP-server. I then downloaded (from debian)
kernel 2.4.20 from http://www.kernel.org and compiled
it to get X working (as part of a i810/i815 howto).

The 3c59x-driver was compiled directly into the
kernel along with the other needed support.

The problem is that the network does no longer work.
After searching on google i found a post on a mailing
list which described a similar problem after switching
to the 2.4.*-kernel with the very same driver.

I can now no longer find that post.

I've tried several possible solutions, found at these
lists or google, however none of them have worked.

During the boot I get no clues, only a few error
messages that relate to another problem.

A few lines from my console:

A blank line for about a second while the computer
was working, then back to an ordinary line:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dhclient eth0
(small pause)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] _

Tryed to give the command: {# dhclient -e eth0} without
that changing anything
