xine is also _excellent_ for playing dvd's.

yesterday, i loaded mplayer (from source)
and played an mpg (mpeg-1). then i played
the same *.mpg using xine. the only dif-
ference i could tell, was that xine would
allow me to take it full screen, while
mplayer kept the clip to the original,
much smaller resolution. (now, there may
be a way to play mplayer full screen, so
anyone, chime-in with that detail.)

yeah, debian is awesome! the more
i learn, the more impressed i am
by it. it never ceases to amaze
me.

when i finally figured out how to
play dvd's on a debian (sid) box,
i nearly fell outta my chair. and
i enjoy the movies more now when
they play on a debian box (instead
of on a dedicated dvd player).

the whole experience is enriching.

in my shop (which is a lawfirm),
the people don't care to know

most were weaned on m*$* so

basically, m*$* is all they've

hi,

 1) i hit "v" (for view);

 2) then i hit, "s" (for "save");

 3) then i give the email a file-

i just get the body of the email,
which is cool, of course, but i'd
like to capture the headers with

if the "pipe" command "|" is

can then be saved into a file
without the overhead of try-

point, pigeon.

i was thinking in terms of, say,
a thread by 50 different authors
about printing. if i take the
automatic mailbox default, i would
be creating 50 different mailboxen.
then, finding emails about printing
would be a problem. but i now real-
ize that i could just create a
mailbox called, "printing," and save
those 50 emails there. (i guess it
was the "automatic mailbox naming
feature" that threw me off.

INFORMATION ALERT

AN EMERGING ISSUE WITH:
TROJAN CODE PLANTED IN TCPDUMP AND LIBPCAP

SEVERITY:
Medium

DATE:
November 14, 2002

---

For an easier-to-read HTML version of this article, go to:
https://www3.watchguard.com/archive/showhtml.asp?pack=135225

---

SUMMARY:

On November 13, members of the Houston Linux User Group (HLUG)
reported that some copies of the popular Linux packet sniffing
program, tcpdump, as well as a popular Linux packet sniffing
library, libpcap, contain Trojan horses. If you recently downloaded
and compiled either tcpdump or libpcap from the altered source code,
a hacker could gain complete control of your system and
simultaneously render his activity invisible. There is no direct
impact on WatchGuard products. Administrators who have recently
installed tcpdump or libpcap should reboot their machines and verify
the integrity of these applications.

EXPOSURE:

Tcpdump is a very popular Linux packet sniffer application
 used to monitor
network traffic. Libpcap is a popular library of functions

used by many network applications that need to "sniff" network
traffic such as tcpdump, Snort and Ethereal. If you capture network
traffic on a Linux machine you probably use either tcpdump or the
libpcap library.

According to members of the Houston Linux User Group (HLUG)
, the source code for tcpdump and libpcap on
the official tcpdump site has been infected
with a Trojan. The infected software has also made its way to many
official mirror sites. According to an advisory released by CERT
. it appears the
infected packages were uploaded to the tcpdump site sometimes on or
around November 11.

When you compile the infected tcpdump and libpcap packages, the
Trojan makes an outgoing connection to a fixed remote IP address
using TCP port 1963. If the connection is successfully established,
the attacker can gain remote shell

access to your server. The remote shell has the same privileges as
the user who compiled the application. Therefore, if you compiled
one of the infected packages using root privileges, the attacker
gains full control of your server. Since the Trojan makes an
outgoing connection, it will pass through any firewall that is not
egress filtering .

In an interesting twist, the Trojan also alters the packet sniffer
libraries in a way that any packets from the hacker's IP are
ignored. In short, the hacker can hide himself from your network
monitors.

If this attack sounds familiar, it is. The attack is identical to
the Trojans recently found in both OpenSSH and Sendmail. In fact,
the design of the Trojan suggests that all three cases are the work
of the same hacker. For more information on those past cases see our
Information Alerts on August 1

and October 9
.

SOLUTION PATH:

If you have recently installed the tcpdump or libpcap packages, it
may already be too late to protect your server. Details on this
Trojan are still emerging. However, the previous Sendmail and
OpenSSH Trojans only ran only once during the applications build
process. Rebooting your machine removed the malicious service from
the machine's memory in the past. We recommend you at least reboot
your machine in case those previous details hold true with this new
Trojan. After rebooting your machine, run "netstat" to see whether
or not your machine is connected on port 1963. If you do not find
any connections on port 1963 then that hacker's backdoor is not in
affect.

We also recommend you un-install tcpdump and libpcap and delete the
infected packages. CERT provides a great step-by-step document
 on
recovering from a system compromise that you should follow if you
have installed the infected tcpdump and libpcap packages.

This is a good example of why it is important to use signature files
when downloading software. Signature files provide a means of
verifying the authenticity of the file you are downloading. Although
it appears that the infected packages were first introduced around
November 11, if you downloaded tcpdump or libpcap in the past few
weeks, we recommend you use the signatures in CERT's advisory
 to verify your
packages. For more information on validating downloads with an

...oops, sorry about the "world writeable."
(the three 6's should've tipped me off.
whew!) thx for the heads-up.

anyway, i'm able to save changes to the file
_if_ i use the "!" to the command, ":wq". i
guess the file is locked because it's a "hid-
den" file? (the message i get after vi
.muttrc is, ".muttrc already locked, session
is read-only.") my non-"dot" files don't
say that when massaged with nvi. and i can
save them without the "!".

so, at least i can save file changes, which
basically consisted of adding this debian
list to .muttrc (subscribe debian-user@lists.
debian.org). there was a recent thread chid-
ing users that reply to the list who also end
up sending a duplicate to a previous author
in a thread. and, besides, i don't want to
get on madduck's bad side.

i think my situation is resolved, or at least
i have a decent workaround.

thx to all respondents.

debs,

firstly, thanks to all that replied.
i got good info. ("world writeable,

secondly, i still don't know how i
screwed up the perms.

and thirdly, during my morning 75-mile

~/vi.recover files, try to move the
contents of .muttrc to a new filename,
delete .muttrc, and then copy the con-

in other words:

1) rm /var/tmp/vi.recover/*

3) rm .muttrc

4) cat new_muttrc_for_testing_1a > .muttrc

(cat /dev/sndstat)

Installed drivers:

Type 7: SB MPU-401

Card config:
Sound Blaster at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1,5
SB MPU-401 at 0x330 irq 5 drq 0

i just tried to install "nagios-common" and it
removed a lot of my good programs--gimp, xine,
mplayer that doesn't even begin to scratch
the surface. (i'm still trying to access the
totality of what it removed.) from what's left,
i may have to rebuild the box. (mplayer won't
even install now.)

why would a "network monitoring tool" need to
decimate a system?

it jacked me up!

i was running sid.

apt-get install nagios-common

the output is gone. all i can remember is that
after the packages were downloaded, maybe 30-40
programs were removed. i thought they had been
upgraded by "nagios-common."

(after going through "apt-get install nagios-com-
mon" again, i see that mplayer now works; but
other things are borked.)

yes, running sid ("still in development," af-

i knew that any update/upgrade has the poten-
tial of breakage. (it was time for me to

i wish i could. it all happened so innocently
that it looked like a regular package intall,
until things started being removed.

i'll get out the sarge cd in a few minutes, re-

_sid_. i'd take much more than this to keep me

Dvorak is quite nice. I could never go

"clawing" at the keys. *ouch*).

...sorry, I've never used those apps (vim

layouts are "logical" in Dvorak. I use
nvi and things seem fine.

I did myself a favor when I learned Dvorak.

hi, xucaen,

i play mp3's with mpg123. (it's console based.)

i've no experience with cd-to-mp3 conversion, but i've seen

"...asleep at the switch" and "...homeboy packaging": man, woody
really tore you up. (but it's just something that's in "testing"
mode though, right?)

i used to be hung up by the debian distribution names, especially
since i've never seen toy story, but i figure that until i
create my own linux distribution, "potato" ("ham," "slink," "woody"
or whatever) sounds pretty darn good to me.

i'd troubleshoot the nic prob down
to atleast having legit "potato"
media--_valid_ cd's or download the
flies (from http://www.debian.org)
for "base" install floppies. i
believe i have the same nic.

(doesn't http://www.cheapbytes.com
sell "potato" for like, $6.00?)

"...$40.00"? ouch! and it's

debs,

i tried option #3 (the "satellite" approach) in
eximconfig. well, i really wanted option #2 (the
"smarthost" approach, which is what i'm now using).

for the email i tried to get (while exim was set for
"satellite,") that's now sitting at my isp
(mail.pcisys.net), how do i retrieve it? (mostly it'll
be mail from the list, so i'm anxious to see into

my sony picturebook, running potato on 2.4.0, shows
that the controllers for sound and usb are on irq 9,
which doesn't bode well for "sound" (as it just plays a

i believe i need to put the sound controller on a

i'm probably the only one willing to wait for
woody to be released, officially. (i'm willing
to wait for my "meal," 'cause i'm not starving
in the meantime.)

i don't think that the people actually doing the
work get enough credit and thanks for all their
dedication, given all the other things in life
that must or should get done. so, as i wait,
patiently, for woody to "arrive," i hope the
developers see that at least someone likes their
approach and appreciates their time and energy,
which will benefit a lot of people.

you should be able to use a 2.2.19 kernel, but you may find it
easier using a 2.4.x kernel.

hi andy,

i wouldn't think that anything would break, but it just puts
the program files in the home directory, which is what i
backup; except, i don't like to backup program files. so
for me, it would only be a personal preference not to
install in my home directory.

"clone" laptops and 1 dell dimension (xps t600r). however, my
sony picturebook doesn't crap out. (so i guess i've got inferior
h/w; i've learned to quit buying clones and stick with brand
names, other than dell.)

hi steve,

i, too, use icewm (with liquid theme). i just close netscape by
clicking the "close" botton for the window; and i never get a "run-on"
process. (is this method wrong?)

exim worked; had to upgrade to exim4, which, for me, doesn't work

2007-08-15 Thread p
on january 2, 2007, i replaced an aging hard drive, running debian
potato. for the 3+ years of running potato, i used mutt (exim and
fetchmail) to handle email.

ever since (jan. 2, '07), when i upgraded to sarge, i have not been
able to configure exim4 (correctly), as when i "fetchmail," open
mutt, and look at the messages in /var/mail/"me", i get the error
message, "mail delivery failed," for each email.

when open an email, i see this refernce to localhost:

"the following address(es) failed:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

   unroutable address"

(if i could get it to recognize my email address as:

"pplaw [at] pcisys.net",

instead of as,

"[EMAIL PROTECTED]",

then i think it would work. that's where i'm stuck.)

my googling "unroutable address" for exim4 entries and reading
the "exim4-doc-html" file(s) lead me to believe that i may have to
learn how to write code in order to have a realistic chance of fig-
uring out how exim4 (version 4.63-17) needs to be setup.

on the other hand, since it's been 8 months, and counting, it
doesn't look like i'm going to be able to figure out exim4:

 1. is there a way to use mutt and fetchmail without setting up
 exim4?  (i pop3 my email from my isp.);

 2. is there another text-based email client that can be used
without trying to configure exim4? or

 3. is my only hope to wait and see if exim4 is someday upgraded
to an easier configuration, one like the old "exim"?

 4. as an aside, why do the exim4-configure windows have jibber-
 ish-looking borders?

thx.

for what it's worth, on one of my etch boxen, i

...sorry for the loss and that i don't have a "substitute"
recommendation.

however, i just wanted to add that i use the "mbox" format,
but i just copy the "mbox" file into a new file at the end
of each year--to archive it. then, i delete the contents
of "mbox" and start with an empty one at the beginning of
the year.

for example, i have these "mbox" files as yearly archives:

txt_2005_mbox.txt
txt_2004_mbox.txt
txt_2003_mbox.txt

etc.

i typically archive between 3,000-6,000 emails per year,
and my email client, mutt, handles them nicely. this way,
my "mbox" doesn't grow to become unmanageable or slow.
and, certainly, i can archive more frequently, if neces-
sary.

so, if i have to find old emails, i just look through
those "archived" files.

luck.
