fsck seg. fault Please Help!
hi, the other day my woody machine just kinda stopped working...upon a reboot i learned via beep-codes that the ram had failed. i broke out the shop-vac and cleaned it out and it started to boot...here's where the troubble began... none of the rc scripts ran, and many other problems (couldn't login due to pam libs not loaded, etc.) i booted to a potato, and later tried woody rescue disks. running fsck -p /dev/sda2 tells me to run manually.did that and there were thousands of problems that were repaired, but then fsck caused a segmentation fault! here's some of the output... >>cleared a few illegal blocks<< "Unable to andle kernel paging request at virtual address >>blabla hex<< current->tss.cr3 = 08d18000, %cr3 = 08d18000" >>if you want all the stack dumps etc, let me know<< "Code: 8b 12 39 78 04 75 f3 39 68 08 75 ee 66 39 70 0c 75 e8 89 c2 Segmentation fault" HELP ME! i need to recover my home directory! i've learned my lesson and promise to make use of my tape drive from now on to backup! but seriously, what other utils can i use instead of fsck to repair the drive? when i mount the partition, i can ls / fine, but ls /home/matt lists one directory, then reports ".:input/output error" thanks, -matt -- matt [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Choose from over 50 domains or use your own -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". There is a low level tool (can't remember the name and a quick search through packages.debian.org didn't find it, may also only be in unstable or testing) but you'd need to know the structure of the fs at the bits level to use it. If fsck is able to recover a block (or sequence of blocks) but doesn't know where they belong it will place them in lost+found (each partition has one) -- you then need to manually look at the data, figure out what it is, and cp it to where it should be... not fun, and really only worth it for stuff you can't just download again or configure up. what kind of memory requirements does fsck have? i hope it will be able to check a 10gig drive with all these errors with only 32mb of ram+130mb swap. -matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". ssh and X very, very strange problems
Hi everyone. I've been using Debian (potato) since r0, and have always loved it. The lists always had the answers to all my questions and i was happy. Now, a $10 PII266 compaq deskpro 4000 fell in my lap. After throughing a matrox mistique 220 video card in i did a net install of woody. none of the common packages were installed (normal for woody?) so i went around apt-getting ssh2, X, etc. here's my problems: 1) X windows issue. X works fineBUT. when i switch to console (ctrl-alt-F1) and then back to X (alt-F7) the mouse pointer/cursor in X turns into a big white box with a little black underscore in the upper left. I have the mga framebuffer(not for X) runing all the time. 2) SSH2 funkyness. I can ssh into my woody machine from my old potato machine. but whenever i try from my windoze machine, the connection times out (as though there were no machine at that IP address). tried putty and securecrt. both set to ssh2 etc. ssh2 config file is set up exactly the same as the (fully functional) potato machine. (dosn't have to reverse-resolve hostnames etc.) I've been all over google web and debian lists and havn't been able to find an answer to either of these questions. please help! thanks to all the people who make debian happen, -matt P.S. you can CC me replies if you like. -- http://fastmail.fm - A fast, anti-spam email service. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: ssh and X very, very strange problems
I'll try adding that line to my xf96 config file when i get home. as for the hosts.allow file...that's the first thing i thought of. so i compared it aginst my working potato system. they're both the exactly the same. if memory servers me hosts.deny has all.parinoid and hosts.allow is blank. this actually supprised me...shouldn't the parinoid deny all my local machings since they don't reverse-resolve to a hostname? thanks, -matt P.S. my list subscription seems to have taken a dump. so please CC replies to my e-mail. winscp is so, so close. in the "wishlist" on the site it says "* Mount remote directory as drive." if they get that functionality, it will be prefect. until then, it's kinda fun to play with... I really like the idea of a single executable that contains the entire programbefore putty, i hadn't seen that in the intel environment since DOS! actually, this is an important "feature" i forgot to mention earlier...the program must be able to be installed by a user on an NT/XP machine with poweruser privedges. each time a user loggs off, the machine cleans all changes...so it must be installed every time. thanks -matt On Tue, 10 Dec 2002 18:14:36 -0800 (PST), "nate" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > matt said: > > Hi all, > > I need some advice. > > I'd like to have the home directorys on my woody box available to > > machines on the local (NATed) network, and via the internet. > > samba is good for local access...but (i don't think) it can be pushed > > through a NAT-based router. > > > > What is the best package to do such a thing as securely as possible. the > > client software must be able to run on windows machines as well. > > depends what level of access, at my former employer I used WinSCP > for win32 clients, and enforced RSA key logins. Kernel Panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
My Hamm system is a couple weeks old, and I'm trying to roll my own kernel. The first few trys seemed to work, (removing PCI support, setting processor type to 486, etc...), but now, no matter how simple of a kernel I try to build, the system won't reboot. The kernel loads, then, after about 3/4 of a screen of normal startup messages, the system halts with: VFS: Can't open root device 03:01 Kernel Panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on 03:01 What do these messages mean, what have I done to myself, and how can I undo it? I installed the 2.0.34 kernel source package. I think I'm following the instructions in /usr/doc/kernel-source-2.0.34/README. I do: make mrproper make menuconfig make dep make clean make zImage make modules make modules_install cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.34 lilo Here is some other potentially relevant info: $ less /etc/lilo.conf boot=/dev/hda1 root=/dev/hda1 install=/boot/boot.b map=/boot/map vga=normal delay=20 image=/vmlinuz label=Linux read-only $ ls -l /vmlinuz lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Sep 7 15:01 /vmlinuz -> boot/vmlinuz-2.0.34 $ ls -l /boot total 295 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512 Sep 7 15:27 boot.0301 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4536 Nov 21 1997 boot.b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 300 Nov 21 1997 chain.b -rw--- 1 root root 6656 Sep 15 23:12 map -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 444 Dec 12 1997 mbr.b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 308 Nov 21 1997 os2_d.b -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 281865 Sep 15 23:12 vmlinuz-2.0.34 Thanks, Matt Miller "Software is never finished, it is only released" Mike Gancarz, The Unix Philosophy

I had read only the beginning of the help on the Enhanced IDE support: "... the full-featured IDE driver to control up to four IDE interfaces ..." and had figured that, since I have only two IDE drives, I did not need this "full-featured" driver. Why does Netscape hang
I'm running Netscape 4.5 on Debian 2.1 (I'm a newbie with Linux). I am using a Netscape tar.gz file from a magazine CD (it is the glibc2 version of Netscape). I log on as a non-root user. Netscape starts fine and I can browse without problems. But when I try to use the 'Messenger' part of the program, it does not work. The cpu usage goes upto about 98%, and no matter how long I leave it, Netscape remains unusable (hung?). I have reinstalled Netscape base from dselect and the everything worked fine the first time. But after logging out, and then back in again it hangs again. This only happens if I am not root. I would be grateful of any help you can offer me. Thank you. Matt

In fact after using Debian for about a week now I'm not changing back to RH (or SUSE for that matter). I also see that some here have trouble with Cheapbyte CD's. I must be lucky with mine as the install went perfectly, first time. My only slight grumble is that Debian does not have a detailed LILO setup during the install. Then again, its fun reading the docs and figuring it out yourself. Matt

The hardest part for me was partitioning. I'd just bought a new 8GB drive, and wondered how much space to allocate for /, /usr, etc. I have some Linux experience, with SUSE and RedHat. Debian sounded like a challenge and I've found it to be very user friendly, although many have not. Matt

HP LaserJet Series II and Debian Linux
I am trying desparately to get my HP Laser II to work in linux. I have to have somthing to print out all these bloody HOWTOs ;o) I used both apsfilter and Redhat Printtool to get it to print, but it seems to only want to print about 1/2 the page at a time. So when I print one page, I get two pages: the first one has the top half of the document, the second has the bottom half of the document... It's really veryfrustrating, and I'd like to figure out how to get it to work. IF anyone has experience with this printer and linux printing at all, I'd really like to hear it. Thanks, Matt
Re: HP LaserJet Series II and Debian Linux
Mike: I am wondering, how much ram is in your LJIII? I think maybe I am hitting the top of my printer's physical memory. I don't know how much it has, I just picked it up in an HP refurb shop for $65. Do you know if there is anyway to make the lpd spool the data in such a way that it won't send more than my printer can fit into ram at one time? (I thought that's what the filter was for, but obviously not) The printer works liek a champ is Windows , but gosh darnit, I'd like to print my stuff out in linux... Thanks for your help. Lilo and >1023 error
I just recompiled to include sound modules, and when I run lilo to register the change, I end up with an error: 1432>1023 cylinders I don't know how I got to have the kernel in a place out of the first 1023, I have a 10mb dos partition setup to correct for a bug with my Tekram DC390F scsi card. I'm running an 18.2gb WD enterprise w/ ~11gb linux ext2 part if that helps. If anyone knows how to get lilo to run for me so I can have sound, I'd appreciate it! Thanks as always, Matt
Re: emu10k1 troubles...
Hi Brad, > I have never used make-kpkg kernel tools. How would I use this to set up the > alsa stuff needed? You *should* use make-kpkg! :) It makes kernel building and module handling a lot easier. Here's how: Just download the latest "alsa-source" package by typing "apt-get install alsa-source" as root. Oh yeah, and do a "dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source" afterwards so that you can set the packages compile-time settings (what card, what options). After this, go to /usr/src and untar/ungzip the new alsa-source.tar.gz file there. It will make a bunch of sub directories.. modules/alsa-source, I think... then go into /usr/src/linux (or wherever your latest kernel is) and do this: As root, type "make-kpkg kernel_image modules". This will (hopefully) bring you to the kernel configure screen if you've never done it before.. (if you don't need the kernel installed or don't want a kernel deb, just use "make-kpkg modules")tweak whatever you have to tweak and then exit. make-kpkg will continue to build the kernel and the modules and then assemble nicely debianized packages for both the kernel and modules in /usr/src. From there, just "dpkg -i yourkernelpackage.deb yourmodulepackage.deb" and it'll install it for you, lilo and all. If you use grub or something else, remember to reinstall it after a kernel upgrade. hope this helps, Matt
libXext.so.6 problems in sid
Hello, After a package update on my sid system the other day I suddenly started getting errors having something to do with libc6 with many of my programs. Anyone else? As I'm not too familiar with this kind of problem, I was wondering if someone could help me figure it out and possibly fix it. Or is it specific to some bug in a sid package since I last upgraded? Your X freezes are definitely video related.. so running cpuburn and memtests won't simulate the problem. Check your X video settings -- make sure you're running within the specs of your video hardware and that you're using the right driver/server. You might just have some bogus video hardware considering it's a new system, though that's a bit of a longshot. As for your freezing problem, if you're running ext2 or some other filesystem that gets damaged (sometimes) when you don't shutdown, try installing ACPI for your system power button. This way, if X freezes you can press the power button and your system will halt as usual, no CTRL-ALT-BS needed to save your system. (There's a Magic SysRq way to do this too.. but I forget.) Cheers, Matt

Re: how do I play divx encoded films on testing?
Alan, mplayer still relies on some win32 codecs -- these will soon be replaced by linux native/gpl'ed codecs. Is that what you're talking about? If it's only dvd that's not working, you probably need libcss (the supposedly illegal library) to play it. You can grab all of this.. or at least tips on where to find it.. at the mplayer site mentioned below. Try running mplayer as root when reading a dvd -- if it works, at least you know where to start fixing. I'm pretty sure yours is a problem of css decrypting, though...s cheers, Matt On Sat, 2001-12-15 at 21:44, Alan Chandler wrote: > -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- > Hash: SHA1 > > On Saturday 15 December 2001 3:24 pm, Matt wrote: > > Use mplayer. Brad, Sounds like you just have mixer issues. Try apt-get'ting "aumix-gtk" and using it to tweak your sound levels. It's a little better than alsamixer. Also, when you install the aumix deb, make sure to comment out the lines in /etc/aumixrc (add a # character to the beginning of the line) that prevent it from messing with alsa mixer settings. Most alsa drivers (for xmms, for example) aren't the greatest.. and who really wants to use alsaplayer anyway? Make sure you compile/install alsa-oss on your system and then make sure that the module is loaded (use modconf in debian to check which modules are currently available/installed for alsa). cheers, Matt
Re: ALSA strikes again (sb16 no go)
ALSA works just fine with SB16. Try ALSA 0.9 -- it's better. Make sure you have the right module compile options.. oss-emulation, isa-pnp, etc. Then use modconf to make sure that the correct ALSA modules are indeed loaded. To make them load at boot automagically, add them to /etc/modules. Also, remember that ALSA defaults to mute everything. Use a good mixer like aumix-gtk to "unmute" the channels before you play (/etc/aumixrc will need to be edited so that it works with alsa -- you'll see what I mean when you look at the file. Re: Help installing base system (sid i386 binary disc 1)
Mike, My advice is to not use the sid binary iso's at all. Download the woody ones and upgrade to sid once the installation is complete -- if you're feeling dangerous. If you're new to debian, stick with woody for a couple weeks until you get the hand of apt and package management.. not mention the general non-RedHat way that Debian does things. And then you'll see the light in your intelligent decision to ditch the redUgly dist. :) cheers, Matt On Sun, 2001-12-16 at 18:06, Mike Russell wrote: > Im a new user thats just moved from Redhat. One workaround, albeit a cheesy one, is to just run in X11 fs mode and then just CTRL-ALT-- to a lower res to make the image appear larger. Are you sure that SDL compiled OK? Check the output when you run ./configure to see if SDL is flagged properly. Do you have the correct libsdl development packages/files installed? Also, try playing the movie as root to see if that makes a difference. Could be a permissions problem... cheers, Matt

Xglobal_lock'ed out of several apps

As I'm not too familiar with this kind of problem, I was wondering if someone could help me figure it out and possibly fix it. Or is it specific to some bug in a sid package since I last upgraded? Here's an example of one app, among many, that no longer works: "gpgp: relocation error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6: undefined symbol: _Xglobal_lock" And when I ldd the libXext library I get... ldd /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6: "libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40019000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x400f4000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x8000)" Thanks, Matt

Re: alsa and sb16
Hold on... you don't even have an ISA card? You might wanna know that the sb16 driver is for old soundblaster ISA cards ONLY. You're not even using an sb16! I see from you're output that you have an AudioPCI128 -- this is a different card altogether, with different drivers. No wonder the modules aren't working! :) You should be using the ens1371 driver. First, get a newer version from the mplayer cvs. It'll help things out a lot.. especially with the gui issue. I don't think it's default to install the gui.. so you'll have to specify in the ./configure --blah --guioption --etc. Same deal for playing encrypted dvd's (though I like ogle-gui better for that). ./configure just looks for supported drivers on your system. Your card may handle mga_vid, but if you don't have the driver your linux system has no idea how to access that function on the card. Grab the mga development libraries with apt/dselect and you're set. Same goes for sdl and all those other fun outputs.. Have a close look at what ./configure outputs when you run it without options and then go apt-get whatever packages you want and it doesn't find -- remember to grab the libsomething-dev, not just libsomething. cheers, Matt
What's a debian kid look like?
Forget support and distro discussion for a second.. Who are we here? I'm curious about what the Debian demographic is. I know this is sort of an impossible thing to answer, but it'd be interesting to explore in vague terms who uses Debian, at least compared to those who don't. Crushing realities like, "Am I typical? Does using Debian separate me from the rest?" Controversial questions like, "Will I ever meet more than 1 or 2 female Debian users who are active on mailing lists? Am I a Microsoft-branded pinko 'cause I like open-source?" IT? Artsy? Young? Old? Bitter? Socialist or CrewCut? Utopian or realist? I'll try to break the ice a bit: white male, 22, Canada, FineArts ex-pat turned CompSci near-grad, downtempo and raregroove on the weekends, csound, php and java development on the weekdays. Left-leaning (Harpers, not New Republic), piano-playing, community-oriented, social. Curious why so many people use RedHat. (Just an experiment) cheers, Matt

Mr Iehrenwald, Your rant isn't what this thread is about. We're talking about Debian users, like myself and presumably you. Not whether those white males among them should be responsible for anything, or whether "Ted Kennedy" deserves me. :) Man... drop those lines on alt.welovedubya instead, please. [MORE IMPORTANTLY] 1. Much of what Debian is about is being open to all views and people; 2. If you read the Debian Social Contract your anti-"left" views might get rattled by its "pinko nature" and "community values"; 3. Get a life. The whole notion of "left" and "right" is bogus anyway. Debian people believe in the GPL, the power of community, the restrictions of commercial software licenses and freedom of expression. Nothing more (well, sort of) and nothing less. Re: emu10k1
Mike, If you're not currently using kernel-source and don't really have a need for it (the binary kernel satisfies your needs) then don't bother installing it. This way, you don't need to use alsa-source. You can just you kernel-2.4.16 (or whatever) and the matching alsa-modules-2.4.16 (matching kernel # to kernel #). Install alsa-utils (or is it alsaconf? or both?) and then run alsaconf, select your card.. and bingo. Re: Geforce II under Xwindows
I have GEForce II running right now. I am running XFree86 4.1.0 (from unstable). To make it run, you need to go to the nvidia site and download the kernel file and the glx file, then modify your XF86Config-4 file to unload GLcore and dri. I got a lot of help from typing in your search favorite search engine "debian inspiron 8100". You'll find an XF86Config-4 file and so on. setup exim for remote outgoing mail
Hi everyone, i'm new to this list, and i need help! i've searched the archives and can't find a solution to this problem. i've been using debian for a few years now, and have been able to handle all the problems that have come my way..until now... here's my situation... i have my debian box behind a NAT device (LRP on an old 486) i've set up some family with a free isp that blocks port 25 traffic this isp does not provide a SMTP server for their users these people use mailandnews.com for their e-mail and i don't want to switch them over to softhome (the easy solution) here's what i want to do... set up exim to receive these people's outgoing mail and send it over to the recipient. i'll have my NAT device to redirect some port (like 2500) to the debian machine running exim (i know how to do this) here's the problem... i can't get exim to send mail...all messages (including error replies) get frozen the closest i've come to solving this is using the satellite option, but that only sends mail to mailandnews.com users! can you give me some step-by-step setup instructions for doing this, or a working version of exim.conf? any info/links/help would be GREAT! thank you, -matt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Public/permanent/media-specific mounts
Hello.. I remember reading somewhere (FHS maybe?) that permanent mounts should now be put off the root.. I still keep cdrom, zip, floppy under /mnt, by the way (a recent thread addressed this point already..) ...but say I have a public directory that holds music, lets call it "music" -- it's not user specific, so I'm not going to toss it under home. Would /usr/local/music be appropriate? It used to be an ftp site, so /var/ftp was fine, but /var/music just doesn't cut it... and /music seems to be root clutter -- or is it? Opinions welcome. Yes, yes.. nitpicky at best -- but that's what it's all about when I can't sleep. ;) Besides, such things matter on larger systems -- best get used to good directory structure. cheers, Matt
Re: again CD-burning probs
Probably hardware. SCSI errors would give different and nastier messages in your logs.. If you've tried different brands of CD-R's (I'm assuming quality brands) try different dye types as well -- my burner works far better with certain "Short Strategy Type" discs, for example. With burners (though not usually with brands like Plextor) the laser can start to go after a year or so if you're unlucky -- they're made of plastic instead of glass these days so warping is far more common. cheers, Matt On Sat, 2001-12-29 at 21:07, Kerstin Hoef-Emden wrote: > > Hi everybody, > > my CD-burner again is bad behaving. Hi Kerstin, > You don't have to answer that question anymore, I looked it up with a > search engine. You think, I should try phthalocyanine dyes - right? I've had good luck with phthalocyanine (you're right -- that's the chemical used on short strategy discs). Kodak Gold Ultima's are good quality as well, though. Seems strange that they'd always fail. A good brand in short strat. is Mitsui -- I've had best results (particularly for audio burning) with them. In your case, however, I do think that you might just have a defective lens -- this is a common problem with CD read/write devices, though I'm not sure how one would test for such things. As it so happens, I had to replace my burner last week. Maybe taking advantage of the boxing week sales is the best solution! :) I got a Plextor 24x/10x/40x CD-RW for $141 Canadian that works like a charm. cheers, Matt

samba + win2k = oplock problem?
*sorry in advance for the long-winded post* Hi, i've been running this samba server for many months now, and have had no problems with it. today i tried playing some music stored on the samba server (container) using my win2k laptop (slim) running winamp. this has worked before...but now whenever a song is requested to play, winamp hangs for up to a minute, and the following is generated in /var/log/samba/log.slim: [2004/04/01 14:53:25, 0] smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(758) oplock_break: receive_smb error (Success) oplock_break failed for file music/Bjork - Headphones.mp3 (dev = 1601, inode = 426593, file_id = 4). Debian Questions on apt-get
I have worked with Centos quite a bit in past though no expert. Giving Debian a whirl now. Installed Debian on a 1U box. Used a 1TB drive and EXT4. After I installed I found ssh was not installed. In Centos when I want to update or add a package I do this: yum update or: yum install package_name To find a package I also frequently do something like this: yum list available |grep abr_package_name To get ssh going I finally did this from console: apt-get install openssh-server It demanded I plug the USB CD-ROM back in. Now I have SSH running and can eliminate the keyboard and monitor. After getting ssh installed I edited /etc/apt/sources.list and commented out the CD to get it to quit asking for the USB drive which will not remain on the system. Now on Centos when I do 'yum update' after a fresh install I usually get offered a good number of patches etc. When I do 'apt-get update' I seem to get nothing. So are there really no patches available or am I doing something wrong? How do I get it too download and install new packages with apt-get or whatever rather then using the CD? how do i downgrade to xfree86 on sid?
hi all, i can't really believe that i need to do this (i like xorg a lot) but i need to downgrade to xfree in order to use a midified trident driver. since there are no xfree86 packages in the official repository, i can only hope that they exist elsewhere... so, how can i use xfree instead of xorg on sid? Thanks, +matt PS. for those curious as to why i want to do this, here is my situation. If you can offer alternatives, please do: I have a via epia v1 mini itx mobo with onboard tv-out. The trident driver in xorg supports the video chipse as well as the tv-out chip, but simply does not work properly (blank screen). VIA provides a driver for xfree (binary and source) that i've been able to compile in the xorg tree, but it has too many external dependancies to run. There also exists an alternative driver (black5's iirc) for xfree, but it has runtime problems as well when compiled in the xorg tree. so, i feel as though this is the easiest route to a solution. -- matt [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- http://www.fastmail.fm - A no graphics, no pop-ups email service -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Gaim problems
Peter, Last I checked (a few years ago) this problem is due to licenseing issues. something happened, and those packages were removed from the debian repository. You can look for them from a third-party repository such as backports.org or apt-get.org. Once you find a suitable repository, simply edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file with the new repository info, run "apt-get update" then "apt-get install gaim" and you should be all good. +matt On Sat, 14 Jan 2006 19:43:12 -0800 (PST), "Peter Bayliss" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > I have just installed Debian 3.1 and everythign seems > to be working > great. however, Gaim was not installed and when i try > to do in using the Synaptic Package Manager, it fails > and tells me that "libao2 >=0.8.6" and "libgtkspell0 > >=2.0.2 are needed but uninstallable! > > how do i go about fixing this? RE: fetching mail from M$ Exchange using rpc over https
I looked into this a while back and the only app I found which would connect was Microsoft Outlook 2003. I had some mac clients and the best I could offer was web acces via OWA, RPC via a VPN or reluctantly, IMAPS. Each solution has it's drawbacks. IMAPS is easy add to an Exchange server, will only provide mail access, no calendars or access to corporate public folders. Ask your techs nicely perhaps they will add IMAPS and open some ports for you, though I have to say, I wouldn't unless there were no alternatives. > -Original Message- > From: Peter Teunissen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Sunday, 6 November 2005 7:33 AM > To: Debian users list > Subject: fetching mail from M$ Exchange using rpc over https > > Hi, > > > My employer is moving it's mailservices tot M$ Exchange 2003. > Now all external access has to go throug rpc over https. Mailman/Exim4 issues
I've been having some problem getting Mailman to work with Exim4, I've been googling and trying stuff for a couple of days and I'm at a dead end. I'm kind of hoping by the time I articulate my problem and the steps and checks I have performed to solve it, in this email, I will spot the solution. I'm running Sarge, a fresh install. My DNS is working, I can resolve my FQDN locally and remotely. Apache is installed and I can access it locally and remotely. Exim4 is installed and configured to send and receive email. Dovecot is installed and IMAP and POP3 both work. I can send and receive mail. I have install Mailman and that process created the mailman user and group. /etc/mailman/mm_cfg.py has been altered to reflect my hostname... # Default domain for email addresses of newly created MLs DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'mydomain.com' #- # Default host for web interface of newly created MLs DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'www.mydomain.com' I created a mailman list and `check_perms` reports 'No problems found'. Which is nice. The Mailman pages are available and I can create lists. So I create a list called 'test'. I receive the email messages confirming the list has been created and showing the aliases. I'm using Exim4 so I'm pretty sure I do not need to add the aliases to my /etc/aliases file. For my Exim4 configuration I have the following... /etc/exim4/conf.d/main.01_exim4-config_listmacrosdefs # Home dir for your Mailman installation -- aka Mailman's prefix # directory. MAILMAN_HOME=/var/lib/mailman MAILMAN_WRAP=MAILMAN_HOME/mail/mailman # User and group for Mailman, should match your --with-mail-gid # switch to Mailman's configure script. MAILMAN_USER=mailman MAILMAN_GROUP=mailman I add the file, /etc/exim4/conf.d/router/450_exim4-config_mailman_router, and that contains : mailman_router: driver = accept require_files = MAILMAN_HOME/lists/$local_part/config.pck local_part_suffix_optional local_part_suffix = -bounces : -bounces+* : \ -confirm+* : -join : -leave : \ -owner : -request : -admin transport = mailman_transport One thing that did give me pause for thought was the advice in the README.EXIM which said 'Put this router somewhere after the "begin routers" line of your config file, and remember that order matters.' I chose 450 because 400 is for system aliases, and although I'm not using them for mailman, this seems like a likely place for exim to be dealing with mailman/router stuff. For the transport section, I have : /etc/exim4/conf.d/transport/40_exim4-config_mailman_transport mailman_transport: driver = pipe command = MAILMAN_WRAP \ '${if def:local_part_suffix \ {${sg{$local_part_suffix}{-(\\w+)(\\+.*)?}{\$1}}} \ {post}}' \ $local_part current_directory = MAILMAN_HOME home_directory = MAILMAN_HOME user = MAILMAN_USER group = MAILMAN_GROUP This matches the README.EXIM example. Ok, so that is the config, I restart the services... `/etc/init.d/exim4 reload` `/etc/init.d/mailman reload` Right, from gmail I send a blank massage to [EMAIL PROTECTED] A quick refresh will present me with the following reply... Perhaps that is why I run DWM rather than GNOME on this T60 Thinkpad. :p On 12/15/23 23:23, Greg Wooledge wrote: On Fri, Dec 15, 2023 at 11:05:41PM -0500, Matt wrote: I had to go to Wikipedia to understand the context of the discussion. But ultimately, the main takeaway from this thread should be that when diagnosing a problem, you may sometimes discover that the root of the problem is different from what you thought. In Gene's case, the problem (long startup time of some applications) does not appear to be related to his disks, but rather, to something in the desktop environment or its underlying services.

First, do you have a file named > /usr/lib/cups/backend/test? If not then cups won't understand a > "test://" URI. Secondly, sending data to /dev/null won't put ink on > paper, but I think you realize that :-). Well. that was the issue actually. When I first installed debian, my printer (Lexmark z53) was only known to work via a script called "lexmarkwrapper" written by the folks over at linuxprinting.org, and installed via an obscure alienated rpm called "lexmarkz53". As I now understand it, lexmarkwrapper posed as a filter, then hijacked the printing process ffrom CUPS and sent the relevant data to the printer all on its own. then the process was returned to CUPS, which finished the filtering process and sent the data to /dev/null. So under this plan, it was essential to set the uri to /dev/null, so tht CUPS didn't actually try to contact the printer. As for 'test'... I can't honestly say why the URI was set to test -- that's just the advice I got when I was first setting up debian. I assume it should have been 'file://dev/null', but nonetheless it worked fine back in the day. Anyway: I did something to break this setup (don't know what) and then tried to reinstall everything. This doesn't work, though, because in the meantime Lexmark has released new drivers which are incompatible with both CUPS and lexmarkwrapper. So I installed the new driver and lexmarkwrapper remained broken. > > | --> this seems fine -- test:/dev/null is what I used to have to have > | in that line, always worked before, though I never understood why > | I needed it. Fortunately, in the meantime GIMP has been shown to work with the z53, so I installed gimp-print, reinstalled everything else, and now I acutally _can_ print from usb://dev/usb/lp0 ! yay. > > | Now, the error_log. debian on laptop w/ limited ram/speed/HD
Hi everyone, A middle-aged (~4 years old -- so, not old, not new) laptop is about to become available to me, and I'd like to install debian on it. The system is an HP Omnibook A4100, P-II 300 96 meg ram 20 gig hard drive I'd like to take the machine on a month-long trip, where I'd use it mmostly for writing and checking email. My *preference* would be to run: -a minimal GUI -mutt, plus something to fetch my mail from a remote location and... -openoffice. sigh. I'm a bit concerned that openoffice can't feasibly be run in such an environment; but I'm revising a book manuscript that was originally written several years ago in Word, and I really, really, really don't want to have to edit it in emacs or something. So does anyone have suggesions about -tweaks to get debian to run optimally on a (relatively) small memory/processing speed budget; -favorite lightweight window managers; -if necessary, alternatives to / modifications of OpenOffice that don't require quite so much room to work as the standard OO installation needs? Would it perhaps be useful to compile stuff from scratch, rather than use generic debian packages? Anyway, thanks for thei nput, Matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

wvdial permissions modem device
i am currently stopping wvdial with: killall wvdial sometimes the permissions to /dev/modem (/dev/ttyS0) which are usually "root dialout -rw-rw" do not get reset to this. i know that when pppd is running that it removes group "rw" to the device, effectively making the permissions "600", and then when pppd is shutdown properly it restores them to "660". so then it appears that pppd is not shuting down properly. 1) does anyone else experience this problem? 2) do you know why sometimes wvdial can "properly" kill pppd and other times it cant? 3) what solutions have people used for this problem? thanks, matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
