GRUB question

2003-04-05 Thread Linux
Greetings all. I've been with Linux for a few years, but trying Debian for the first
time. I'm having a bit of a problem getting GRUB set up, and I know it's my fault.

Could someone using Debian 3 please post the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst for me to
take a look at?

Thank you very much.

If so, did you have to do anything special to get it set up and working?

adding a directory to apt sources

2003-06-09 Thread Linux
Greetings. I am trying to add a directory to the list of sources for APT to use for
installing deb packages.

The dirctory is
/home/skippi/0data/backup/debian30/debian

I have been using the APT HOWTO.
In section 2.2 it tells me to use dpkg-scanpackages to create a Packages.gz file.
I did that and it worked fine, but when I try to add the directory to my sources.list
it will not work. It tells me there is an error in line 10 (the line I'm adding).

I am adding

deb file:/home/skippi/0data/backup/debian30/debian

Evidently either this is wrong, or I am missing a step. Can anyone enlighten me?

thanks

debian 3.0 and XFree 3.x

2003-06-09 Thread Linux
Are there deb files to install XFree 3 with Debian 3?
My computer works with X4, but X3 works "better".

Also anyone know where I could find idiot level instructions on how to remove X4,
install X3 and (the big part) get X3 configured and running.

I almost have my Debian box working the way I want and I would hate to mess it up now.

Thank you

Compaq Trackball and Ethernet Card

1999-08-14 Thread linux
Hi!

I'm just installing Debian-Linux on my Laptop.
It's an old Compaq LTE Elite 4/75 CX including a Smart Station.

Now I reached gpm setup and the laptop has an internal trackball.
Any idea if this device is supported and which configuration to
choose?

Thanks

Oliver Bonkowski

P.S.

Anyone knows which driver works with the Compaq Elite Ethernet
Controller (10 Mbit, IRQ 5, 0300-030F)?

ATA Controller

2003-11-18 Thread Linux
Greetings all. I have a second IDE controller card installed in my
system and am trying to get it to work under debian.

Things that may be relevant:

hda - 15g HD
hdb - 20g HD
hdc - cdrom
hdd - cdburner
and on the second controller
hde - 30g HD

hde is reiserfs and is operational under my Mandrake 9.1 install, but
not seen by my Woody install. It is a "fresh" install after all the
hardware was in place, not hardware added after the install.

Hardware specifics:
Promise Technology, Inc.
Ultra 100 TX2 ATA/100 Controller

The manual says to go to www.promise.com for Linux for "updates on Linux
support". Well, I did so, but no found no love.

Also tried to Google, but didn't get any results that I understood or
could use.

So, any suggestions? I can't help but think I simply need to use
modprobe and install a module or such. I played around with that idea,
but didn't hit upon anything that worked. Of course, since I'm not sure
what I'm looking for, I was guessing.

'Thank you very much.

hi,
the address your supplied is a C-class address.
This needs netmaks 255.255.255.0
However, the -15 you put behind it is unclear to me, I never have seen that
after a ip-number.
Anyways:
A-class 1.x.x.x-127.x.x.x netmaks 255.0.0.0
B-class 128.x.x.x-191.x.x.x 55.255.0.0
C-class 192.x.x.x-223.x.x.x 255.255.255.0
The remaining part os D-class and used for multicasting apart from the
255.x.x.x which is tbe broadcast range.

Netmasks geiven her are ofcourse the most general options and can be different
if a ip-blok is subnetted.

Hi,
Use "chroot install" to install the Knoppix to a hard drive.
Knoppix is based on Debian, so I assume Roberto means "chroot install" using

for a few hours seems to fix the problem, but it seems to reappear after a
week or two.
Any ideas, or suggestions?
Thanks,

I have a Hitachi disk giving the same error, googled for it. Used the
manufacturers diagnostic tool and called tech support,
Result: Dead Disk.
Will be replaced by Hitachi. I recomend doing the same before it si too
late. Back it up ASAP, preferably into a machine on your network and
when you get a new disk just restore it.

and here is where the problem starts.
I did:
dpkg -i gs-esp_7.07.1-9_i386.deb
in etc/apt/ where I downloaded the file. I did it here since I could not find a
more logical location that I would remember. I know this probably sloppy, ohh

What software and what OS did you use to burn it?
It did happend to me before.
Try to look for an oftion to create ISO image when burning. I think that
is what I messed up once when I burned the CD on NERO. Or iin some
software it is an option track at once or something like that, but try
to look for the ISO option first. It should burn an bootable ISO image.
That was the problem I encountered when I did not burn in on Linux.

Also if the cdrom is not recognized you will need to
make a floppy disk in order to boot.

large disk woe under debian installation

2004-11-09 Thread linux
Firstly, apologies that I have seen some discussion on the newsgroups of this
already but much of it goes over my head so please be gentle with me!

I've a new PC, that has 2 Xeon chips and a 250Gb Western Digital hard drive. It
came with a 32Gb NTFS partition with WinXP SP2 installed. From the WinXP boot I
can see (hardware/device manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) that the controllers
are:
Intel 6300ESB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 25A2
 Intel 6300ESB Ultra ATA Storage/SATA Controller - 25A3
(it also lists primary and seconary IDE channels (each twice for some reason)

So, when I use the Debian 3.0r2 (woody) installation CDs it only shows 137Gb. I
have noted that the discussion on the newsgroups discusses both different
kernels and hardware. I'm not an expert on either, so please could somebody tell
me (in simple terms!) what I should do? (Even if I could persuade the vendor to
swap the 250Gb HD for 2 or 3 120Gb HDs I'll not sure if I'll have problems
using several HDs!)

Thanking you for your time and patience!

As someone else mentioned, you are looking for the e1000 driver, which
was not included in the latest kernel in woody (I think 2.4.18 or
somewhere around there). The e1000 module is available in 2.4.21 and
later.
I ran into the same issue with a Dell PowerEdge 600SC that I have. I
ended up downloading the kernel-image for 2.4.21, copying it over to the
machine, and manually installing dependencies from sarge. If I were
going to do it again, I would probably just install straight from sarge.

you'll all be pleased to know that I've successfully got an operational
''sarge'' running with no hassle whatsoever (so far!) - seems quite str forward
once I decided to ditch ''woody'' -- the 250Gb HD and 1Gb Ethernet card both
identified by ''sarge'' so could partition all at once and download packages off
the Internet - impressed also by the GRUB doing the MBR edits for me. All in
about an hour!

Now for the nitty gritty (smp kernel, making the display high resolution and

You can keep your /home partition if you have one. I consider that to
be one of the big benefits of partitioning a system: When you nuke it,
you can still keep your user data. =)
Good luck with sarge. I've found it to be just fine for my purposes.

A quick question about hardware. I'm 99% sure my box has 2 Xeon processors in
it. I had installed the sarge kernel then got the
   kernel-image-2.4.27-1-686-smp_2.4.27-1.backports.org.1_i386.deb
package and installed smoothly using `dpkg -i `, rebooted
into that kernel. I now seem to be seeing 4 (four!) processors eg as reported by
`top`, `cat /proc/cpulist` and in the /var/log/messages file. (Aside: with the
uni-processor kernel, `top` only reported 1Gb memory but the smp kernel,
correctly, reports the 2Gb memory

I've just rebooted to WinXP and the SystemProperties implies there's 2
processors on the 'General' tab, but lists 4 on the
Hardware->DeviceManager->Processors tab and indeed the TaskManager also implies
there's 4 CPUs.

Any ideas what's going on?

It's because of hyperthreading. Each processor appears like two to the
OS. You can most likely change it in your BIOS if you think your OS
performs better with two CPU's instead of four (there are cases this
might be true).

What do you mean exactly when you say that it is a "graveyard anyway"? From what
I read it is the "recommended-more secure version". Isn`t it? So what is the
difference? Which version to use?

forget about konqueror, it hang on me too. try mozilla.
just type "mozilla" from command line or "netscape" this is more stable if you
have an old piece of hardware and little memory. Also try Gnome environment I
find it working better for my OLD Veteran (200 MHz non MMX Ram:256). :) Works
better for me. You can still use KDE applications from menu or executing them
from command line. Maybe not the best way how to solve the problem with
konqueror, but this is how I get arround my system.

Try Blackbox products. I have a personal Serve Switch or what ever it is called

Red Hat and Winsh_tNT. Try that. You may be lucky to buy them even on ebay or

I am newbie and this is my experience. Gnome runs faster and gives me less
trouble :)) KDE is more fancy and has more sofisticated aplications in it. If
you boot to any of those you have them both available, for some reason some KDE
stuff is on strike when run from Gnome in that case I call it from command line
and basta, usually works. So I like Gnome since it doesn`t look like windows and
acts more simple and runs faster on my old hardware where I try to learn in
before I will dump it on serious machine and try to do some geophysical
modeling. So I guess you can choose what ever you like better. I like to work in
command line world since I have been arround since the first CPU like Z80, 08086
. My first machine was 2MHz fast and was talking "Basic" :). I like when world
is simple, so the Gnome seem to me.

Was that for me? If yes what was it for? If it was for me than I appologize and
just on the side arogance come from the words above mine, I mean your. I am not
doing to agrue with you, it never makes sence, I may not be very technicaly

technicaly skilled and I just shared what works for me without using any big
technical knowledge in Debian-Linux. Thanx for being so nice.

Don`t worry about it. I personaly think that if somebidy doesn`t enough patience
to help should not even open email like this, or just over look the question
he/she does not want to answer and answer just what you are willing to. That way
every bodies freedom stayes untouched. I dealt in my life with all sort of ppl

discomfort and frustration. If I can help I help, if not I am sorry. I never try
to force my will on others, that is not the right way. The person who asked the

such case he could be 12~15 years old. I started progarmming at the second grade

I totaly agree, I most of the time have no clue what I am reading about, my job

Why don't you save all your data (what you always should do if you are planning
something like that), create your ext3-partition and copy your data back. No
data should get lost ...

building 2.6.x kernel on Athlon

2005-07-12 Thread linux

I was wondering if anybody has successfully built a 2.6.x kernel on an
Athlon chip? I've tried a couple of times but got errors (outline below)
so was wondering if you could let me of any special requirements.

I've not full details (now in Win to send this!) to hand but I started
with, IIRC, 2.4.18-bf (off

the netinst) running unstable on a Intel chip etc, swapped out the mobo
ie just kept the HD. Still booted (unlike WinXP!), a couple of apt-get
upgrade/dist-upgrades recently (eg to gcc 4.0.1 IIRC). Tried to compile
2.9.6 and 2.9.11 (following 7.1.1 of the Debian Ref) but both give numerous
warnings/errors at the (mmm not sure what the -486 flag is about):

fakeroot make-kpkg --append_to_version -486 --initrd --revision=whatEver
kernel_images

such as

pointer targets in passing argument 1 of 'use_config' differ in signedness

'restore_flags' is deprecated (declared at include/linux/interrupt.h:78)

finally falling over at

  CC [M] drivers/char/isicom.o
drivers/char/isicom.c:154: error: array type has incomplete element type
drivers/char/isicom.c:155: error: array type has incomplete element type
make[3]: *** [drivers/char/isicom.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [drivers/char] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.11'
make: *** [stamp-build] Error 2

Any ideas on what I've done wrong?

Ooh bum - you've selected my suggestion! - no pressure!

Anyway - which modem did you get ?

The modems that I have direct experience of do not have ethernet - they've
been models of the SpeedTouch USB modem (the 320 and the 330)

Yes, it's a speedTouch 330

If it is a SpeedTouch there is a user space driver (apt-get install
speedtouch). Therre are hundreds of places around the web that explain how to
do speedtouch and debian.

I'm running unstable and the package info seems to imply I don't need to
add anything...

Basically the modem behaves in a very similar fashion to a normal dial-up
modem: i.e. you have to set up ppp.

I thought i had this... but it dhcpdiscover (IIRC) tries a couple of things
during boot and then quits...

Unfortunately, I can't track down anything right now as I'm cooking tea for
the wife and me. Will definitely get back to you later this evening if you
haven't succeeded on your own.

No probs...

Thanks, M

Some of this may not be necessary if you are running a >2.6.10 kernel.

This explains:

http://www.debianhelp.org/module-pnForum-viewtopic-topic-9551-start-0.html

I'm running 2.6.11 kernel so that implies just download the relevant file
(speedtouch-firmware_0.3012k_all.deb). I then did a 'dpkg -i' on this (is
that all I need to do?!??!), set up peers/demon based on above and amended
pap_secrets to end:

-- begin snippet --
# OUTBOUND connections

# Here you should add your userid password to connect to your providers via
# PAP. The * means that the password is to be used for ANY host you connect
# to. Thus you do not have to worry about the foreign machine name. Just
# replace password with your password.
# If you have different providers with different passwords then you better
# remove the following line.

(none) * password

michael * [demon password]
-- end snippet --

(couldn't see what to change in chap_secrets and I understand that ppp
(with 2.6.11) knows about pppoa so nothing to do there. not sure how ppp
knows to look up /etc/ppp/peers/demon thou

so needless to say i may be closer but i ain't there yet!

cheers, michael

postscript/ghostscript

2005-09-18 Thread linux

hello all
i have a mac and am sick of mac osx
i can't buy a new machine but i can move over to linux
i would like to install debian (ppc)

my problem is, i don't know if my printer/scanner will work
its a canon pixma MP-130 multifunction
i can't find it in any of the compatibility lists but i've read a bit
about postscript/ghostscript
and was wondering if the printer might be supported by these
technologies
i don't know enough about postscript/ghostscript to be sure about the
compatibility

let alone how i would set the printer up once linux is installed

if my printer will not work with linux i will stick with mac osx
its cheaper to purchase the latest version of osx than it is to replace
my printer with a linux compatible one

any suggestions or comments?
any help greatly appreciated

usb speedtouch modem with 2.10

anybody got their Speedtouch USB modem working under 2.10 'unstable' post
recent updates (eg new udev and Xorg)? care to talk us through it? I know
we have to unroll udev to an earlier version but there I am stuck.

is the speedtch module stuff still in 2.10 unstable kernel (not quite what
mean but there used to be 'pre-2.10 you need to mess with firmware, 2.10 on
you don't)?

thanks, michael

debugging firmware

2005-12-04 Thread linux
I've traced my 'no stage 1 firmware' error, when attempting to use the
Speedtouch modem on 2.6.11 (k7) unstable following a recent 'dist-upgrade', to

/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.11/drivers/usb/atm/speedtch.c
in the following loop, but I'm not au fait enough with C to understand why
it fails. All hints welcome! as far as I can see, with comparison with a
working Debian box, all my firmware files are there! Thanks, Michael

2003-02-20 Thread linux stuff
I've created a debian server with apache, php, mysql, etc. with a local
address of 192.168.100.43, and after testing it, i'm now ready to show it to
the world. i have a gateway on the 192.168.100. network ... i want to add a
second interface (on the same nic) with the real-world IP address ...how do
i do that? is there a HOWTO with *simple* instructions for doing this?

thanks.

yes, thank you ... i realized i had omitted the subject and re-sent the

as i understand it, it's not the actually install, which should work fine
the way you propose, but the configuration and getting a certificate and
stuff like that which is difficult ...

anyway, is there perhaps a mini-HOWTO that can help me with the basics of
created an SSL page ?

ssh & sshd

2003-03-14 Thread linux learner
hi all,

i just started using sshd on my two debian boxes at
home.

i understand that i can log into any computer that has
my public key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

but when i log into my computer running sshd it
automatically adds me to the authorized_keys list for
that user. How do i turn it off?

Also, what is the function of private key locking pass
phrase?

Say i am physically logged into my home account and my
pub and private keys are in ~/.ssh/ now when i log
into a remote host, i give my log in and password on
the remote host and it logs me in and if my public key
isn’t there in authorized_keys list it is added, my
private key pass phrase is never asked, is this
normal?

thanks for the patience n everything!

[ OT ] Debian GNU/Linux on SunFire 280R

2003-02-14 Thread GNU Linux
Hello all,

How mature is the Debian GNU/Linux for 64bit SPARC Machines? Our office
bought SunFire 280R
<http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/280r/sun280r_serverdatasheet.pdf> with
2 UltraSPARC III Cu 900Mhz SuperScalar SPARC V9 processors and 4GB RAM
intended for my mail server project that I'll administer soon but I'm
afraid to use Solaris 8 or probably Solaris 9 for this purpose because I
don't have any experience with Solaris OS. I'm thinking of using
GNU/Linux and I think Debian would be the best distribution for SPARC
machines. But I'm actually a Mandrake Linux user. I'm just afraid I
can't use the tools that I usually use in my Mandrake Linux machines if
I'll use Solaris 8 or 9.

I hope I can convince my boss not to use Solaris 8 or 9 on that machine
instead, I will use and install GNU/Linux on it and Debian would be the
distribution.

Advice please? Am I doing the right thing? Practically, what would
you recommend for production server like this one?

By the way, the project is not just the usual mailing service. All the
mails that will go out to our server will be by batch jobs because the
nature of the project is a notification and confirmation service for the
clients. My preferred MTA is qmail.

Please Cc: me for all your response because I'm not subscribe to this
mailing list.

Thanks in advance.

Under Linux I would use apache and a perl cgi. You could probably take
advantage of the security, encryption and authentication module for

If this because the list is currently facing a problem

IT HAS TO BE A MISTAKE ! holly God
Please check this e-mail I had sent to the debian-user
mailing list using this account (
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ) for example:
Subject: Re: vote: best webmail! Tuesday, November 9th

I issued the thread at the first place actually.
And if you browse the mailing list archieve for 3
months back there are several e-mails I had sent to
the list.
So, if it's that fact that my account is not
registered in the mailing list, maybe the solution is
to re-subscribe to the list one more time. :-(
Thanks anyway.

Unresolved symbol errors with custom kernel... .

2000-03-17 Thread Linux Information

I am getting 20+ 'unresolved symbol' errors after installing a custom kernel
and modules under the potato freeze of Debian. Actually, now that I look at
it, I get a lot more than 20, and the majority of them (I loose a lot from
scrolling past the console buffer) are in /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/. I have
applied two kernel patches (ppDev and ppSCSI), which both worked (after some
tweaking). My HP 5100 scanjet parallel port scanner works very well through
the Gimp now! The only other thing I have done to the kernel is to install (or
try to) the Soundblaster Live module. It does not work. The errors I get from
it are like this:

Using /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sound.o
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
sound_preinit_lowlevel_drivers_Rebdfb792
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
isa_dma_bridge_buggy_Rf82abc1d
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
sound_unload_lowlevel_drivers_Ra675fda1
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol
sound_init_lowlevel_drivers_Rec0251af

I can access the mixer, but I'm not sure I've got the correct mixer devices, so
I don't actually know if the mixer is picking up the mixer device (if that
makes any sense).

I also get a smaller list of 'unresolved symbol' errors during boot.

Any ideas?

Re: Unresolved symbol errors with custom kernel... .

2000-03-17 Thread Linux Information
Here is what I did:
   1. Untarred the kernel source (2.2.14)
   2. Applied ppDev patch (for 2.2.14)
   3. Applied ppSCSI patch (not for 2.2.14, for 2.2.10, I think.)
   4. make xconfig; make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules; make
modules_install
   5. untarred the Soundblaster Live! source
   6. made the sb live modules; installed the sb live modules (this done with
script from source of sb live module - also sb live module not for 2.2.14
kernel, probably also for 2.2.10.)
   7. ran update-modules
   8. moved the kernel into place, edited lilo.conf, rebooted.

A new thing I just noticed: the sb live module claims to load correctly upon
boot (I put it in /etc/modules. I still get no sound, but it IS loading
correctly.

Question:
   1. How can I check to see if the module is loaded correctly (sb live)? Is
there a test I can run?
   2. Should I have run depmod after installing new modules? I think the
problem may lie in old modules that I no longer need as modules. Would running
depmod clean the dependencies for old modules?

As for your ideas:
   1. I did not directly make soundcore or anything else, only make modules and
install, should I have to make them each separately? I don't have the
experience of exporting symbols out by hand (I don't really know what the term
symbols referrs to), but I would love to learn; where can I find a howto or any
documentation about this? There does not appear to be a modules howto.
   2. The patches in question were either for the correct kernel (2.2.14), or
an older one (2.2.10)
   3. It is possible that my modules.conf is wrong. Debian uses
/etc/modutils/aliases and other files in /etc/modutils to change modules.conf.
I could not find good documentation about how to use this, but I did find some
into in the sb live sources - make a files called emu10k1 in /etc/modutils with
the alias info. It reads that file and uses it when I ran update-modules.
   4. I did not run depmod after building the modules and installing them.

Thank you,

Benjamin
