I had the same problem, you have to create a symbolic link called "icons"
to /usr/lib/mozilla/icons in your $HOME/.mozilla, like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.mozilla$ ls -l icons
lrwxrwxrwx1 evo  evo22 mar  5 23:14 icons ->
/usr/lib/mozilla/icons

/dev/mouse: not supported by device

1999-08-18 Thread Davide Anchisi
I everybody,

I tryed to run XFree after configuring with xf86config. After a while
that I typed startx (and the monitor came black) there is a return to
comand line and appeared the message:

Fatal server error:
Cannot open mouse (Operation not supported by device)

So I tryed gpm, with a similar resul:
gpm: /dev/mouse: not supported by device
And even gpm -m /dev/ttyS0 is not better

What's the problem? What should I do?

Thanks to any help,

Davide

The mouse is a Serial Mouse.
/dev/mouse i's already:

/dev/mouse -> /dev/ttyS0

and even trying:

gpm -m /dev/ttyS0

gives the message:

gpm: /dev/ttyS0: device not supported

So I don't know what to do.

Problem running X-Window with SVGA 16bit colors

Hi,

when trying to start X-Window in 16bit color mode an error message
appear saying that linear memory is required. What does it mean?
(I tryed changing resolution but this doesn't solve.)

I've a Tseng Labs ET4000 video card with 1024 kb memory on a 486 with
16Mb RAM and 32 Mb Swap.

Do I need more RAM, more video memory or have I to change some setting

Thanks for any help.

libforms and xpm? Problems upgrading LyX

1999-09-27 Thread Davide Anchisi
I have LyX_0.12.0 working on my pc, installed with dpkg on a
debian-slink distribution.
Now I'm trying to upgrade LyX to 1.0.3 starting from sources.
The problem is that when configure ends running it gives the following
error message:

The following problems have been detected by configure.
Please check the messages below before running 'make'.
(see the section 'Problems' in the INSTALL file)

** Can't find libXpm. Please check that the Xpm library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find xpm.h. Please check that the Xpm library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find libforms or libxforms. Please check that the xforms
library
is correctly installed on your system.

** Can't find forms.h. Please check that the forms library
is correctly installed on your system.

I checked with dpkg -l and even with dselect: those packages are
installed (and LyX_0.12 is working).
What does it mean? What can I do?

(I tryed to say to configure where these library are, but where are
they?
Using the find command I could only find that there is a libforms0.88
and an xpm4.7 in /usr/doc/ and a libforms.so.0.88 in /usr/X11R6/lib/ .
How can I find where they are, or where are likely to be? What have I to
look for?)

Thanks for any help,

 Davide

Installing on a SCSI HD

1999-05-06 Thread Davide Anchisi
Hello everybody,

How can install Debian2.1 on a SCSI HD?
SCSI controller: Adaptec AHA-1510.
I cannot choose the SCSI HD during installation just booting from the

I do?

I have a 486 with an IDE HD with windows95 and, on another partition,
debian 2.0 (with not the SCSI controller drive yet) already mounted. (I
want to remove 2.0 after installing 2.1 on the SCSI HD).

Thank you for help,

  This is my sistem:

486 processor
16 Mb RAM
Math coprocessor
Floppy disk
IDE HD (with windows95: VFAT)
IDE/ATAPI CDROM (ISO9660)
SCSI host adapter: Adaptec AHA-1510
SCSI HD
Serial mouse (3 buttons)
Sound card: SoundBlaster Pro2
Italian keyboard (and language)
Modem

Is this enough?

What about the compiled kernel? Have I to put it in a rescue-disk? and,
if so, how? Or have I to install debian 2.1 after booting from the
floppy with the new kernel? and, if so, how to put it on a boot floppy
and how to install debian?

Thank you very much.

Hi Brigette,

I think it's better to order CDROMs than downloading the entire distro.
Look at http://www.linuxcentral.com , order the Debian distro ( 2-4 US$ for 3
CDROMs ) and possibly leave some US$ to Debian support.

Cheers,
Davide.

simple question

1998-11-05 Thread Davide Duran
I'm very interested in the future of Linux as commercial OS, but
I have a question:

Linux is great thanks to over 1000 programmers who hard worked on
it in their free time. It was a passion, an hobby.
For sure, the best valuable passion or hobby I ever seen, but I ask:
who can say me that I can be sure that this programmers will continue
their great job? I know that there are a lot of programmers, but
the problem is that, IF LINUX would reach (and I hope) a BIG MARKET
SHARE,
a lot of people will buy it and use it. How can this programmers to
support such a market ??
They are not paid (economically) from their job. They're Linux system
programmers
in their free time. I know they're paid from their first job (most of
them
are
programmers), but imagine that Linux would gain a lot of market.
How can I put my firm in the hands of their free time ???
And if they don't have anymore free time, what can we do??

Thanks for your attention and sorry for my bad english

There is a boot disk.
There is a working libc5, gcc, make and so on.
There is an experimental glibc, and some packages

The better use of XMail is as complete mail server not as POP3 standalone.

You can use custom mail processing of XMail :

to redirect either a single account or an entire domain mails to external

> Is sendmail a POP3 server?

No, if You use sendmail, qmail, ... that are SMTP servers You must install
something like qpopper ( or courrier IMAP if You want IMAP ) to pop mail
from the server.

Check XMail :

http://www.maticad.it/davide/xmail.asp

It can use RBL ( rbl.maps.vix.com ) and RSS ( relays.mail-abuse.org ) as
long as many other MTA can.
It then have a file that hold Your own list of spammers IPs and has a file
that holds IP connection rules ( ALLOW, DENY ).

Yes I used it for a while with no problems (from a sinle user machine
so with few or none messages leaving the system); btw I compiled the tgz
since the deb package was an old version that did not deliver mail
locally. I do not know if it has been fixed now.

It is really simple to configure so it is worth a try.

Try XMail :

XMail is an Internet and intranet mail server featuring an SMTP server, POP3
server, finger server, multiple domains, no need for users to have a real
system account, SMTP relay checking, RBL and custom spam protection, a POP3
account syncronizer with external POP3 accounts, aliases, custom mail
processing, mailing lists, remote administration, custom mail exchangers,
logging, and multi-platform GPL source code. XMail lacks user-friendly
configuration utilities, but is quite stable for production use. The sources
compile under Linux and NT but I plan to make a port to FreeBSD and HPUX.
Read the file README.TXT included with the distribution.

Meta key and xterm

2000-03-31 Thread Davide Marchignoli
Hi,

I am using the frozen distribution and I find quite annoying the fact that
xterm (and rxvt also) ignores the meta key. For instance, when running
bash under console, -d deletes the word in front of the cursor,
whereas under xterm -d simply echos d.

Some suggestion?

Hi Ronald,

I'm doing an SMTP / POP3 / Finger server that run on Linux & M$ WinNT that
support an unlimited number of users and that is not linked to system user
accounts.
It handle multiple domains, mailing lists, anti-spam, relay-checking, pop3
mailbox syncronization with external users POP3 accounts, SMTP mail exchanger
overrides.
It is written in C++ using gcc in Linux and Visual C++ in M$-Win and is full
GPL license.
This server is running in my Co. ( under NT ) from 6 months without give any
problems to us.
It works fine also on HPUX 9.x & 10.x.
I've implemented a file that contain all system dependent code to localize
portability.
I'm having a semaphore weird in Linux in which seems that if a task A creates
tasks B & C, C creates another task D, if B go to sleep on a semaphore and D
release the semaphore, B don't wakeup.
As soon as I've solved this problem I'll release the code ( say beta 0.1 ) on
FreshMeat.
Anyway if You 're interested I can make a snapshot for You.

Cheers,
Davide.

Many computers working together?

2000-01-28 Thread Davide Anchisi
Hi,

My question is not strictly debian related and rises from two
considerations:
1. most computers, for most of the time they are on, don't use theire
full power;
2. when doing an hard job resources are never enough (the more you have
the better is).
I wonder if there is a way to make 2 or more different machines work
together as a big multiprocessor computer so that resources can be
sheared and used where and when needed.
In this way you could perform powerfull computing tasks without _a_
powerfull computer.

Do you know if it's possible to do that under Debian GNU/Linux and how?

Please answer even to my e-mail adress as I have not subscribed the
Debian-user list.

Thanks for any sugestion,

Davide

bad problem with pppd

2001-01-08 Thread Davide Cavallari

I've never had problems with pppd, but now I can't log into the Net anymore!
I have not changed my conf files.
The first time I execute pppd, I get the connection, but the modem hangs
in 3 seconds 8^( and this happens with every provider I have tried.
The second time I try, I get this message on the terminal:

Mon Jan 8 18:49:06 $ /usr/sbin/pppd -detach connect "/usr/sbin/chat -V -f
/etc/ppp/interfree.chat"

OK
ala alanamalat, 06 Jan 2001 19:49:51 +0100

The third time is as the first one and the forth is as the second and so on!
The message is strange, isn't it? It reports a date: 6 jan 2001, 19:49:51
I wasn't online at that time, but the problem began the next time I tried
to connect...before that date all was ok!

I have recompiled the kernel, reinstalled the ppp packet, but no results...
What do you think?

I have a generic 56k modem and this is the file /etc/ppp/option I use:

Exist internet Co. that offer You dynamic dns support, some with Your own
domain name ( You've to pay ) while other ( free ) with their own subdomain (
dyndns.org ).
These services enable You to change Your IP with a simple HTTP GET string
like :

GET www.dyndns.org/sgi-bin/update?user=USER&pass=PASS&host=HOST&ip=IP

You've simply to setup a script with wget that read ifconfig and post the GET.
These services ( dynamic ) use a low TTL to lower the propagation time of DNS
infos.
Anyway bind has a library that enable You to change DNS entries.

HELP: dd of=/dev/hda1, and now?

2001-09-07 Thread Davide Anchisi
Hi everybody,

I have a little big problem.
I have a 2 fs system (Windows on /dev/hda1 and Debian GNU/Linux on
/dev/hda2).
Everything began when I installed lilo on /dev/hda1 (boot = /dev/hda1 in
lilo.conf), for mistake.
Windows didn't boot any more. When I realized that I had installed lilo on
the boot sectors of win, I tried to deinstall lilo with the command:

dd if=/boot/boot.0301 of =/dev/hda1 bs=446 count=1

according to the lilo mini-HOWTO.
I realized too late that the right command should have been (probably):
dd if=/boot/boot.0301 of =/dev/hda1 conv=notrunc

Is there anything that I can do, now? Is there a way to retrieve things
and boot MSWin again.

Please replay to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for any help,

if you want to see Debian (no one have seen it before! ;-)

2020-11-14 Thread Davide Prina
ore information.
For example if you execute the algorithm: Bubble Tree you get the
following graph:

https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip2-310791.png

from the graph view I have hide the edges, elsewhere I will see a gray
background and the program will be slower.

Here you can see that Debian in libc6 dependent.
In the top you can see that there are other packages with strong
dependencies and if you enlarge this part you can see this:

https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip3-301ad3.png

You can see two big spheres with Perl and Python and other smaller spheres.
Also in the libc6 perimeter there are a lot of small spheres, and with a
zoom we can see, for example:

r-base-core:
https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip4-1126f4.png

node.js:
https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip5-8a7fcc.png

You can use also other possible graph visualizations, you can test your
own, but if you use all the nodes/edges most are not very readable.

For example you can use Bubble Pack to get this graph:
https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip6-e5392f.png

Note that the main block have the Debian spiral form :-)

Note that the high number of edges/nodes can cause slow down or block
you computer with some algorithms (I have a very old PC with few RAM and
I notice that a lot).

You can also make more complex analysis fetch other data, for example:
DD names, DD nationality; upstream source (es: sourceforge, github,
...); package tags; package dimension, ...

I don't know very well or nothing of the algorithm used to get this
graphs, if someone of you are expert in this can extract very useful
information with Tulip :-)

Re: resolv.conf getting overwritten

No matter what, /etc/resolv.conf will get overwritten
with

nameserver 127.0.0.1

Are you using laptop-net (or similar packages)? It overwrites
resolv.conf based on its internal configuration.

Hi,

First, thanks for the reply!

My system (Debian 3.1, KDE 3.3.2) does not exhibit this behavior by
default. I can enable (and disable) it by going into the KDE Control
Center: K-> Control Center-> Regional & Accessibility-> Keyboard
Shortcuts-> Command Shortcuts-> Graphics-> More Applications-> KSnapshot.

Perhaps you inadvertently made Print a shortcut for ksnapshot. If so,
you should be able to disable it by going through the above sequence.

No, I haven't... As I stated in the beginning, I checked it to make sure.

Now, I am at work using Fedora Core 5, and again the PrtSc key is NOT
set in KDE, but pressing starts KSnapshot (which I find quite funny).
On the other hand, here I can make it work as BackSpace with "xmodmap
-e "keysym Print = BackSpace"" (which did not work with Debian). So,
I assume it is a Debian-related problem...

By the way, I am using Etch, with the Debian kernel 2.6.18-k7.

Thanks!

Luis

Found it. It is in (err... sorry, non-English KDE) Regional &
Accessibility -> Input Actions (?) -> Preset Actions -> PrintScreen. If
you look for "gestures" in Control Center, it will pop up immediately.

You might want to have a look at dcop, too. In its man page you will
find exactly the example you need:

$ dcop kwin KWinInterface nextDesktop
Another possibility:
$ dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface switchDesktops
where is an integer that tells how many desktops to skip (can be

Two Xorg processes?

2007-09-03 Thread Davide Mancusi
I have noticed that I have two Xorg processes running, one of which is
always stuck at CPU=0.0% but nevertheless shows the same memory usage as
the other process.

From top:
 3062 root 15 0 132m 59m 7984 S 0.7 5.9 10:34.47 Xorg
 3140 root 20 0 132m 59m 7984 S 0.0 5.9 0:00.00 Xorg

Is this normal? I am running Sid on AMD64.

Snippet from the pstree output:
$ pstree root
init─┬─acpid
[snip]
 ├─kdm─┬─Xorg───Xorg
 │ └─kdm───startkde─┬─kwrapper
 │  ├─seahorse-agent───{seahorse-agent}
 │ └─ssh-agent
[snip]

Xorg spawning itself?!

Yes. It happens at every boot.

I wouldn't bother if I were at least sure that the second Xorg process

Did you at some point in the past use "Switch User" to start a new

when the second Xorg process is started. Here is what I see:

$ pstree -a $(pgrep -P1 kdm)
kdm -config /var/run/kdm/kdmrc
  ├─Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/XX
  └─kdm
  └─startkde /usr/bin/startkde
  ├─kwrapper ksmserver
  └─ssh-agent /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/startkde

This should tell you on which VT the second Xorg process is running; you
can then switch to that VT and check out what is going on. (I think it
should never happen that two Xorg processes are attached to the same
VT; lockfiles in /tmp are supposed to prevent that.)

Thanks for the interest and the good idea. However...

$ pstree -a $(pgrep -P1 kdm)
kdm -config /var/run/kdm/kdmrc
  ├─Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/XX
  │ └─Xorg -br -nolisten tcp :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/XX
  └─kdm
  └─startkde /usr/bin/startkde
  ├─kwrapper ksmserver
  ├─seahorse-agent --execute /usr/bin/startkde
  └─ssh-agent /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session...

(The last line is cut.)

I also checked the lock file:
$ cat /tmp/.X0-lock
  4526
which is the pid of the first Xorg instance (unsurprisingly).

What now?

I tried with gdm and I got the same result. I turned then to the kdm log
file and to xorg.conf. The only interesting line in kdm.log was the
following:

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

...which reminds me that my video card has an unused exit port (a DVI
port? I can't remember). Could this be the reason? It sounds a bit silly
to have an X server running if nothing is connected to the DVI port, but
who knows... How can I test this hypothesis?

Loading and blacklisting modules

2007-09-08 Thread Davide Mancusi

I am trying to solve two problems:
1. Load my sound-card module ("snd_via_82xx") before "snd_usb_audio" (I
have a webcam with integrated mike); for some reason, sound won't work
if they are loaded in the opposite order;
2. Avoid to load the "floppy" module at each boot, since I do not have a
floppy drive.

What is the proper way to load sound-card modules at boot? I have read
somewhere on this list that alsaconf is no longer recommended. Is udev
supposed to handle everything now? What should I have in /etc/modules
then? Most importantly, how do I configure udev to get the modules in
the right order and to prevent "floppy" from being loaded (if it is
actually udev's fault...)?

Thanks for reading.

If I understand you correctly, your problem is that root is not
authorised to connect to the X server. The way I work around this (which
might be not the best one) is to create a symlink to
/home/davide/.Xauthority in /root/ (of course, change /home/davide/ to
the path of your home folder), because my machine is single-user; more
complicated situations might require the use of xauth. See man xauth and
man Xsecurity.

By the way, this is an English list :-)

I wonder what you get in initramfs.conf if you do not select to load

I didn't find any where within icedove to set this option. Could anyone
point it out?

That is not an option in iceweasel it is related to the alternatives
system in debian.

To do it properly have a look at "man update-alternatives"

The easy way would be to just let /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser
(something like that) point to the correct browser (your iceweasel
binary)

Even after setting the right alternative, it might still not work
because of bug #425790. Have a look on the BTS, there are a couple of
workarounds.

yeah ... the cause is that location of global config files moved down

official syspref foloder, which is:

$ ls -l /usr/lib/icedove/defaults/syspref
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Jun 1 22:35
/usr/lib/icedove/defaults/syspref -> /etc/icedove/pref

... so copying your current /etc/icedove/ files to /etc/icedove/pref/
should fix this for you ... if not, then I forgot to apply the syspref
patch ... so let me know if this workaround actually works for you.

I actually preferred the workaround quoted a bit futher down [1]. Since
my machine is single-user, I decided not to mess with icedove's
installation dirs, should this bug get fixed one day.

Hi Jeff,

Try
$ ICEWEASEL_DSP="esddsp" iceweasel
This will wrap the firefox-bin executable with esddsp (man esddsp). If
it works, you might want to consider changing the setting in

KDE has kteatime, which is not exactly a timer but could do the job anyway.

fglrx upgrade to 8.42.3

2007-11-01 Thread Davide Mancusi

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has recently upgraded the fglrx ATI driver from
version 8.40.4 to 8.42.3, like I have done. OpenGL stopped working after
the upgrade and I am not able to figure out why.

The first time I run an OpenGL application, it just sits there forever
waiting for something. If I break it and re-run it, it starts normally
but it does not work (except fglrxinfo, which returns the right driver
string).

In one of my numerous tries to uninstall/reinstall the package, I once
bumped in a "libGL.so not found" error. Yesterday I fiddled a bit with
the diversions fglrx-driver installs, but all I obtained was confusion.
I looked in the READMEs and googled a bit, but I did not find anything
relevant.

Any hints?

2. I'm running lenny and you're running sid.
I think the 32 and 64bit versions use the same installation file, yes?
So if it's not related to one of those 2 differences I'm stumped. I don't
understand why just running the installation program with the --buildpkg
switch causes error in your system and not in mine.

Yes, Jonathan, as I hinted at in the previous post (see external link)
the problem was that the ATI package has not been properly updated yet
to reflect the changes that took place in the way Debian organises the
GL libraries (they used to be in /usr/X11R6/lib*). It is possible to
work around this by uncompressing the ATI package and creating an
appropriate symlink. This happens only when building for amd64.

In the meantime, I have found out that nexuiz runs fine if I run it
with the -safe switch; it runs windowed and I think some effects are
disabled. Probably ATI broke some of the GLX extensions in the 8.40 -->
8.42 upgrade.

Thank you very much for your help anyway! I have posted a bug on the
ATI bugzilla and if something pops up, I will post here again.

multiple qc-usb drivers?

there any way to do this? Note that I would not be able to make a Debian
