simple question
I'm very interested in the future of Linux as commercial OS, but I have a question: Linux is great thanks to over 1000 programmers who hard worked on it in their free time. It was a passion, an hobby. For sure, the best valuable passion or hobby I ever seen, but I ask: who can say me that I can be sure that this programmers will continue their great job? I know that there are a lot of programmers, but the problem is that, IF LINUX would reach (and I hope) a BIG MARKET SHARE, a lot of people will buy it and use it. How can this programmers to support such a market ?? They are not paid (economically) from their job. They're Linux system programmers in their free time. I know they're paid from their first job (most of them are programmers), but imagine that Linux would gain a lot of market. How can I put my firm in the hands of their free time ??? And if they don't have anymore free time, what can we do?? Thanks for your attention and sorry for my bad english Davide Duran

Many computers working together?
Hi, My question is not strictly debian related and rises from two considerations: 1. most computers, for most of the time they are on, don't use theire full power; 2. when doing an hard job resources are never enough (the more you have the better is). I wonder if there is a way to make 2 or more different machines work together as a big multiprocessor computer so that resources can be sheared and used where and when needed. In this way you could perform powerfull computing tasks without _a_ powerfull computer. Do you know if it's possible to do that under Debian GNU/Linux and how? The second time I try, I get this message on the terminal: Mon Jan 8 18:49:06 $ /usr/sbin/pppd -detach connect "/usr/sbin/chat -V -f /etc/ppp/interfree.chat" OK ala alanamalat, 06 Jan 2001 19:49:51 +0100 ERRORConnect script failed The third time is as the first one and the forth is as the second and so on! The message is strange, isn't it? It reports a date: 6 jan 2001, 19:49:51 I wasn't online at that time, but the problem began the next time I tried to connect...before that date all was ok! I have recompiled the kernel, reinstalled the ppp packet, but no results... What do you think? These services enable You to change Your IP with a simple HTTP GET string like : GET www.dyndns.org/sgi-bin/update?user=USER&pass=PASS&host=HOST&ip=IP You've simply to setup a script with wget that read ifconfig and post the GET. HELP: dd of=/dev/hda1, and now?
Hi everybody, I have a little big problem. I have a 2 fs system (Windows on /dev/hda1 and Debian GNU/Linux on /dev/hda2). Everything began when I installed lilo on /dev/hda1 (boot = /dev/hda1 in lilo.conf), for mistake. Windows didn't boot any more. When I realized that I had installed lilo on the boot sectors of win, I tried to deinstall lilo with the command: dd if=/boot/boot.0301 of =/dev/hda1 bs=446 count=1 according to the lilo mini-HOWTO. I realized too late that the right command should have been (probably): dd if=/boot/boot.0301 of =/dev/hda1 conv=notrunc Is there anything that I can do, now? Is there a way to retrieve things and boot MSWin again. Please replay to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you for any help, Davide _ Davide Anchisi [EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you want to see Debian (no one have seen it before! ;-)
ore information. For example if you execute the algorithm: Bubble Tree you get the following graph: https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip2-310791.png from the graph view I have hide the edges, elsewhere I will see a gray background and the program will be slower. Here you can see that Debian in libc6 dependent. In the top you can see that there are other packages with strong dependencies and if you enlarge this part you can see this: https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip3-301ad3.png You can see two big spheres with Perl and Python and other smaller spheres. Also in the libc6 perimeter there are a lot of small spheres, and with a zoom we can see, for example: r-base-core: https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip4-1126f4.png node.js: https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip5-8a7fcc.png You can use also other possible graph visualizations, you can test your own, but if you use all the nodes/edges most are not very readable. For example you can use Bubble Pack to get this graph: https://img.tedomum.net/data/Tulip6-e5392f.png Note that the main block have the Debian spiral form :-) Note that the high number of edges/nodes can cause slow down or block you computer with some algorithms (I have a very old PC with few RAM and I notice that a lot). You can also make more complex analysis fetch other data, for example: DD names, DD nationality; upstream source (es: sourceforge, github, ...); package tags; package dimension, ... I don't know very well or nothing of the algorithm used to get this graphs, if someone of you are expert in this can extract very useful information with Tulip :-) Ciao Davide
Minitube in the stable branch
What is the point of packaging such software for the stable release ? Doesn't the package maintainer know the application stop working after some time because Google is constantly changing things on their side. I think would be a better policy doesn't packaging such software for the stable branch, at least the program doesn't get bad reviews from angry users who doesn't understand such thing.

No matter what, /etc/resolv.conf will get overwritten with nameserver 127.0.0.1 Are you using laptop-net (or similar packages)? It overwrites resolv.conf based on its internal configuration. I can enable (and disable) it by going into the KDE Control Center: K-> Control Center-> Regional & Accessibility-> Keyboard Shortcuts-> Command Shortcuts-> Graphics-> More Applications-> KSnapshot. Perhaps you inadvertently made Print a shortcut for ksnapshot. If so, you should be able to disable it by going through the above sequence. No, I haven't... As I stated in the beginning, I checked it to make sure. Now, I am at work using Fedora Core 5, and again the PrtSc key is NOT set in KDE, but pressing starts KSnapshot (which I find quite funny). On the other hand, here I can make it work as BackSpace with "xmodmap -e "keysym Print = BackSpace"" (which did not work with Debian). So, I assume it is a Debian-related problem... By the way, I am using Etch, with the Debian kernel 2.6.18-k7. Thanks! Luis Found it. It is in (err... sorry, non-English KDE) Regional & Accessibility -> Input Actions (?) -> Preset Actions -> PrintScreen. If you look for "gestures" in Control Center, it will pop up immediately. Loading and blacklisting modules
I am trying to solve two problems: 1. Load my sound-card module ("snd_via_82xx") before "snd_usb_audio" (I have a webcam with integrated mike); for some reason, sound won't work if they are loaded in the opposite order; 2. Avoid to load the "floppy" module at each boot, since I do not have a floppy drive. What is the proper way to load sound-card modules at boot? I have read somewhere on this list that alsaconf is no longer recommended. Is udev supposed to handle everything now? What should I have in /etc/modules then? Most importantly, how do I configure udev to get the modules in the right order and to prevent "floppy" from being loaded (if it is actually udev's fault...)? Thanks for reading. fglrx upgrade to 8.42.3
Hi all, I wonder if anyone has recently upgraded the fglrx ATI driver from version 8.40.4 to 8.42.3, like I have done. OpenGL stopped working after the upgrade and I am not able to figure out why. The first time I run an OpenGL application, it just sits there forever waiting for something. If I break it and re-run it, it starts normally but it does not work (except fglrxinfo, which returns the right driver string). In one of my numerous tries to uninstall/reinstall the package, I once bumped in a "libGL.so not found" error. Yesterday I fiddled a bit with the diversions fglrx-driver installs, but all I obtained was confusion. I looked in the READMEs and googled a bit, but I did not find anything relevant. Any hints? The drivers from the ATI website work marginally better than those in Debian/non-free (fgl_glxgears starts) but some 3D applications are still broken (e.g. nexuiz), as if some extensions were broken in the upgrade. It looks like I have to wait a little bit longer to see compiz run on my machine... Jonathan Kaye ha scritto: Following your message I checked out nexuiz and it runs fine with my card and driver. I'm surprised that running the ATI-Installer gave you error messages. I see 2 differences between our systems: 1. You are using a 64bit kernel and I'm using a 32bit one (although I have an AMD64 Athlalon Chip. 2. I'm running lenny and you're running sid. I think the 32 and 64bit versions use the same installation file, yes? So if it's not related to one of those 2 differences I'm stumped. I don't understand why just running the installation program with the --buildpkg switch causes error in your system and not in mine. Yes, Jonathan, as I hinted at in the previous post (see external link) the problem was that the ATI package has not been properly updated yet to reflect the changes that took place in the way Debian organises the GL libraries (they used to be in /usr/X11R6/lib*). It is possible to work around this by uncompressing the ATI package and creating an appropriate symlink. This happens only when building for amd64. In the meantime, I have found out that nexuiz runs fine if I run it with the -safe switch; it runs windowed and I think some effects are disabled. Probably ATI broke some of the GLX extensions in the 8.40 --> 8.42 upgrade. Thank you very much for your help anyway! I have posted a bug on the ATI bugzilla and if something pops up, I will post here again. Davide -- A tautology is a thing which is tautological. -- Time flies like an arrow. multiple qc-usb drivers?
Hi all, I own a Logitech Quickcam Messenger (a webcam) which works fine using the qc-usb drivers at [1]. As far as I understand, however, there are many forks of the qc-usb project, one of which being the version included in the Debian archive [2]. Another fork can be found at [3]. Needless to say, my webcam works with [1], but does not with [2] or [3]. At the moment I am compiling and installing the kernel modules by hand, but by and large I would prefer to use m-a and apt for the task. Is there any way to do this? Note that I would not be able to make a Debian package out of the module sources. Thanks for the help! Re: Iceweasel problems - 2 of 3
Dennis G. Wicks ha scritto: When I restart Iceweasel it reopens all the windows and tabs as designed with one not-so-small problem. It opens *every* window or tab that was ever opened before, nopt just the ones that were open when it crashed or was shutdown. It doesn't seem to know or care that those particular items were closed by either clicking the "X"s or any of the other means, not just minimized. Any ideas on this one? Have you tried to move your .mozilla directory out of the way and to restart with a fresh profile? Maybe some extension or some setting are causing problems...
