Re: Which distribution should I use ?

We are thinking about using Debian Woody or Mandrake Linux.
There's a soft spot in my heart for Debian. I use it on my PEs and
it works great. Honestly, I can't see anyone actually recommending
RHEL over Debian from a management and support perspective.
security.debian.org are really top-notch.
I have a question about Debian kernel for dell :
I have installed a Woody using the debian installer :
http://oregonstate.edu/~kveton/debian/
It works ok, my Raid card is working well with
the megaraid 2.10.1 integrated in the kernel
installed by kveton installer.
BUT

Now, what about kernel updates by the debian
Securiy Team ? If I'm not wrong, the official
2.4 woody kernel is 2.4.18-1 and contains old
drivers (megaraid v1.18).
And when a kernel exploit is discovered, the
security team upgrade the woody 2.4.18-1 kernel,
not the one shipped with the kveton installer :-)
So does it means that if I want to use Debian on
my PE Servers, I'll need to maintain my own .deb
kernel packages, and compile new ones each time
an exploit is discovered ?
I used to proceed this way : create and distribute
my own kernels packages on RedHat 5.2 because
isdn staff was too old. But this is really
a work overhead.
Can I have opinions ?

Re: How to force update second DNS server

2007-08-07 Thread david robert
thanks for your help

x3n <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi,

Normally your secondary NS should synchronize by itself after a
certain amount of time. The problem for the slave NS is to know about
changes. In your primary NS, you can add the "notify yes" command in
the zone declaration, so that salve NS (declared in the zone file!)
are notified about changes.
If your slave NS is not declared in the SOA of your zone, you can use
the "also-notify x.x.x.x" parameter.

After doing this, the secondary should synchronise as soon as the
master has reload the updated zone. If it's not the case, you should
have a careful look to the serial number...

Remote SNMP respo

2007-09-05 Thread david robert
Hi Guys,

I have configured snmpd server in my debian server and
i am able to see only local snmp requests and when i
try to do remote host using snmp i am getting the
following error
ERROR: netsnmp : No response from remote host
I tried the following solution
You just need to think about checking this file :

/etc/default/snmpd

It has a line :

SNMPDOPTS=’-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p
/var/run/snmpd.pid 127.0.0.1′

You see the 127.0.0.1 ? That is our problem. Just
erase it if you want to give full access or adjust it
to your local network.

But it didn't help me could some one help me how to
fix this problem

Thanks for your help

Bug?This can happen if you use UTC in your RTC (realtime or hardware clock) and dual boot with windows, which expects local time in the RTC, and may periodically reset it back to local time. In this case, you probably should reconfigure Debian to use local time to avoid the problem. If you don't use UTC or don't dual boot with Windows, then
its just a Debian configuration issue. I've always done it manually, but tzconfig may do what you need.-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

it. Reroute the SCSI cabling and make sure the cable is correctly terminated. Verify that the power supply to the SCSI drives is in excellent condition; try not to connect several drives to one power connector line and avoid using (additional) Y-connectors.Try out if the old card still works. Check the number of commands that can be queued in the settings of the SCSI driver and eventually reduce the number. If you have several cards installed, remove them as far as possible and try if it works. If it does, reinstall the other cards one after another to find out if there's some card that interferes with the SCSI controller.GH

Same here, and it's not the permissions that are the issue.

Looks like doas performs the search for the command *before* it sets
the environment. You'd need to petition the developers to make a change
to the program's behavior in order to get what you want. Most likely
this would need to be argued upstream, as I cannot imagine Debian writing
a local patch for that. Not in a setuid program like this, and not after
the bullshit they pulled with su in buster.

I asked doas author Ted Unangst about this. His reply:

Sorry, only very limited env replacement can be done in setenv. root's
environment isn't available before the switch.

Ergo, it is just as you suspected. This isn't an issue with OpenBSD
because regular users's PATHs already include sbin directories. It is an
issue with Debian because (a) a regular user's PATH doesn't include sbin
directories and (b) the change in su behavior awhile back restricted
access to some root privileges. It's not an issue with sudo, but for
various reasons I'm more comfortable using doas.

My workaround was to add aliases for a few commands to my .bashrc file,
e.g. (but not a real example):

alias ua='doas /usr/sbin/useradd'

Thanks for the sanity check.
